Scratch test should be your absolute last resort as a test because it damages the stone. You should resort to non destructive tests like taking a refractive index, looking for inclusions, specific gravity test, optic figure, fluorescence, etc

Hi can anyone tell me what a blue /teal faceted oval sapphire good color should cost me. I'm in the US .i want a deep blue not dark .maybe darker than cornflower blue.Just don't like the deep prices.Help anyone where is the best place to get a close to 3 ct.great looking sapphire prefer unheated..I'll take a quality sapphire. Should I change colors without sacrificing size..I like natural no lab created.just me being picky I'm wearing it.My preference
Such utter nonsense. He who does not break things to understand what they are has nothing more than a surface understanding of that which they wish to know more about.
yeah so which stones are lab, which are natural, which are other dyed material.. which are heat-treated..... I thought that is why we were watching this......
You forgot another accurate way to tell what it is. You can buy a gem testing machine. Such as the Gem-eye 1 (and other such specialty machines). Even a basic diamond tester machine will accurately tell you if the stone you have is a ruby/sapphire, quartz, or a piece of glass.
Thanks! Very refreshing to find someone trying to help online buyers when most are trying to take advantage or even flat out steal from the uninformed.
Yes, I agree. I have a diamond ring found flattened and traffic worn in a south bound highway lane. The ring itself had been hit by tires numerous times, the band's setting crown somehow remained vertical, and the stone did not break. The stone was taken to a jeweler. His assistant walked it to the back to show him. Returning immediately with the declaration "I sorry, it is a synthetic, but would you like to sell it for $20.00? I still have it. If it is a synthetic, it is one like I've never encountered before? Traffic, the tires of transportation, at high speed, and more than most industrially under load mind you would have hammered the stone to dust 'if' it was a synthetic? But survived being run over countless times.
Sapphires come in many varieties of blue. The light blue sapphire I have catches the light and sparkles like no tomorrow. It certainly gets attention because of that but many folk aren't aware that sapphires can be light blue. One of the mist important thing with any gem is to keep it clean! Polish it every day, a soft toothbrush with ammonia if they're really dirty - but keep them shiny and enjoy that sparkle!
5:00 min in I hated you, sorry but you skip the whole part of inclusions, the part everyone is looking for. Breath test and scratch test is so basic. A good test if u know its old is to look at the lines of the cut. Good stone cutters the ones that know what they are doing the stones are not symmetrical the facets of them are made as the stone is ground. It's a trial and error process with real stones fake ones all have the same cut "cookie cutter" if you will.
I wish you could've gotten a little more in depth with your video, that said it gave me a MUCH better feeling should I ever have the wherewithal to buy a sapphire.
It's quite an amatueristic video but you picked a good topic, if you really invest and study video developing courses online I believe you can grow to more then 10 million, or dare I say it, 100 million subscribers
FYI For breath test make sure your stone is really clean! Any oils from touching the stone can cause the fog to disappear much slower than if the stone is clean of all oils and grime! 💎
@@imeldadavin3478 He's telling the truth. One purpose if a cut gem is how it catches the light and sparkles! And talk about an attention grabber? That's the beauty of any gemstone but it won't happen if they're not clean. They should be polished every day.
I have a question: why do the blue sapphires in fine jewellery always look so dark? Aren't lighter blue sapphires available? I once saw a huge blue stone (not sure what it was) but it was midway between what I think of as dark sapphire blue (the blue of Princess Diana/Kate Middleton's engagement ring sapphire) and blue topaz, more of a swimming pool blue. It was absolutely gorgeous but why does this colour seem so rare?
Hi Gled, blue is a darker color that is closer to Black than lighter shades like yellow and green. A few sapphires do have both Rich color and brightness. The electric blue of topaz is the result of irradiation treatment, while good quality Sapphire is untreated or treated with heat only. ruclips.net/video/lN4SBTXAt6U/видео.html

Watch crystals come in plastic, glass and sapphire. If you buy a sapphire crystal off fleabay you will likely get glass. Good quality watches usually have sapphire, but there are exceptions Seiko often uses what they call Hardlex, which is a hardened glass, not a sapphire. They use those in some watches ta are kind of pricey, but a sapphire will scratch them.
buggsy5 You are correct! Refraction is an effective and easy method; however, refraction requires training to use, and I wanted tests the average person could do at home.
Cor Gems. I just bought a single stone sapphire through the mail. It is yellow but it sparkles on both sides but kind of clear in the middle. It's really pretty but doesn't look like it did on the site where I ordered it.(From China) When I get my phone straightened out I was hopeing maybe there would be away to send you a picture or pictures of it & maybe you might be able to figure out what stone it might really be. Just wondering. I thank you for any help & your time.
GhostCity Shelton Hi Shelton, unfortunately, it's impossible to tell from just pictures or videos, so I would be doing you a disservice by giving you the false hope of a conclusive answer. I recommend taking it to a reputable jeweler for them to look at or sending it to a laboratory for testing. The steps in this video are a good starting point.

Because the glass of watch is saffire too. Normal glass may be easily scratched with fake gems.

you shouldn't buy a gem from ebay, for such deals you need to meet them irl or something that you can check the stone and the certificate
