I haven't read through all the comments or someone else may have said this also. May I suggest that you do an advanced class on line use. I know you try to keep it simple so that the beginner fisherman understands but I know there's a bunch of people like myself who have been fishing for a long time and maybe even have bad habits with lines. I would like to see a video the takes specific scenarios and what line and or leader you might use in that case. And the actual weight of line/leader that you would use in each case. I work in a Sportsman's Warehouse in the fishing department a lot and have helped many people especially beginners choose the proper line for the fish that they're going after. I also try to give tips to the advanced fisherman if they start asking questions or if they're willing to listen. So in advance video would not only help myself in my fishing but I would be helping others that come to the shop. Thank you for all the videos that you guys do! I have learned a lot even though I've been fishing for 60 years or more.
Line is such a key piece of most folks' fishing that this video could/should have been broken down into a multi-series of videos. That said, good stuff.
I made the swap to braid to leader per TB’s recommendation and it’s made managing spools and line so much easier. The braid lasts a lot longer saving so much money. Tactical’s made a lot easier...like catching fish 😂
Don't forget that the Flippin' FC has 12" of fluorescent yellow for every 3' of line. Works amazing to see light bites. I've moved to using it on all my jig rods.
I would say that there are many reasons a bass may not strike your lure and seeing the line and knowing it is a bad thing is most likely last. I have used straight braid since Stren introduced Kevlar, which was awful btw, then to Spiderwire and others and have never had a problem. Would love to see some underwater footage of Braid vs Mono vs Fluro with the same lure to see how the bass react, if at all.
@Billy West He was using bright colored mono that he used for salt water? The pound test must have been in the 50 to 100 range. The action of the Senko would have been greatly effected. Again, many reasons why bass won't bite and the kind of line is most likely last. IMO and the opinion of many fish experts.
True story - I fish lake Erie smallmouth (very clear water). Always used Maxima fluoro leaders. Caught the usual amount of bass last season. Realized when packing away for the winter that I accidentally bought Maxima mono leader and was using that all season. 🤷♂️

Alright Tim stay off my google history i was literally just looking at what line to use yesterday because I'm going to be setting up a ultralight combo when it comes in the mail tomorrow. But great video very helpful.
For people starting out, braid is the most economical. For fun fishing, braid will last 2, 3, 4 YEARS. I've had to replace it from getting too low before I've had to replace it for breaking down.
Talk about braid to leader diameter matching. Ex: 60lb braid to 12-15 fluoro. Or 20-30 braid to 8-10 fluoro. Still learning what diameters work best with each other
I use a 20lbs braid main with a 12lbs fluorocarbon leader. You want the fluorocarbon diameter to be bigger than the braids diameter because braid line in time cuts into the fluoro material a little. I found 20braid and 12fluoro works great for me.
Thanks for mentioning the ultralight finesse fishing part. 2lb fluro for trout jigs are the best. Can’t use mono, too much stretch and you miss the hooks set. Can’t feel it fast enough. Braid ripping through the water is a turn off for trout. Fluoro for trout, mono for crabbing, crappie fishing (paper mouths), treble baits, and floating bait, braid for all else.
What if you’re using a spinning Shimano Nasci 2500 FC with a 90mm or 60mm whopper plopper too water? Wouldn’t monofilament be better for that delay setting topwater plopper treble hooks? I never fished before so I need some advice… got my feel today just waiting for my Shimano Sellus 7.1 med/fast rod. I’m mostly looking for bass but if I want to catch any fish really… hell I’d be happy with a good fish Lol
As a majority bank fisherman, I do not bring many rods with me( sometimes only one). I was a flourocarbon truther because I had confidence in it, but I watched a video Matt did about two years ago and I wanted to switch to braid to try different techniques. I did not have confidence at first, mostly because I didnt trust my flourocarbon to braid knots and I kept thinking fish have to see that braided line! I decided to buy some Maxima Ultragreen to use as a leader with one of the recommended braided lines and WOW my confidence has gone through the roof these past two years. The durability, reliability, castability and most important VERSATILITY of this setup is bar none in my opinion. I was having alot of problems breaking off with that line in 15# in a tournament. it was honestly a joke. So I tested it rubbing against brick on the corner of my house and it was breaking super easy. I will say that I tested 12# sunline assasin behind it and it outlasted 15# hybrid line.
@@seanwood4032 Yozuri hybred is weird line you cant use it for 2 seasons you need to change it out more often in a single season it gets weak if left on for a long time I noticed...But for how cheap it is it's good line for the $. I use 6lb and 10lb some times. I know it's not as good as sunline but that costs way more. Also you may have gotten a super old roll that was laying around in the shop for many years maybe?

I’ve seen people put 50lb mono test on reels that say they only handle up to 20lbs 170 yards. Then they wonder why they’re always bird nesting or have line issues. It’s important to understand your gear.
My dad and i have somehow gotten away with 10lb fluorocarbon or mono for 30+years. There are times we have looked at each other in amazement that we just hauled a hog out from heavy heavy weeds/lily's etc. Im talking line that is heavily under rated for conditions we fish and several seasons old. We have wisened up as of the last 5,6 years, using braid but if we are casting fluorocarbon or mono, its still 10lb test.
I know you guys do buyers guides all the time, but I'd love to hear your opinion on which setups and pieces you feel like gain the most from upgrading. Maybe an order youd recommend upgrading if you are someone who has a solid basic lineup from your $100 combos video, which pieces make the most sense to upgrade first and why. Love the content guys 😁
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but if fluorocarbon is 99% invisible, why do you bother with different pound test lines? Why not just use the #8-10 on all of it since they won't see it anyways?
Besides using all three major line types, I have also used a “line” that very few people are even aware of. When I was young, I used what the real old timers used for lake trout fishing on the Finger Lakes of New York State. Copper wire! Plus it is used in a hand fishing method from wooden row boats. A metal spoon is hand jigged while rowing. The copper wire sinks to the depths lake trout are found during the summer. No downrigger needed. Hand fishing with copper wire = common technique used in the mid 20th century.
I made the switch with braid to leader a couple months ago and I’ll never go back. The big thing for me is memory. I cannot stand the intense memory of mono and fluoro as it wrecks my casting distance and often causes backlash. Lost a few jigs in the connection knot process but it was well worth it and I can have a new leader in under 2 min now
I noticed that you didn't mention it but that Sun line FC structure is worth giving a shot if you haven't tried yet. Anyways I'm sure a lot of people will enjoy the content of this video. Well done Tim
Thank you Mike. I recently did a video on the FC Structure. I really like it. So far ive been really impressed with the technique specific lines from Sunline.
@@tacticalbassin I used it on 2 fishing trips I think it's my favorite braid now I use suffix 832 and that's nice also but the Xplasma casts for ever...... got to see how it holds up in the long run though.
The Maxima Chameleon line has been around for a long time. I remember using it back in 1980 it is very strong and has great abrasion resistance. Maxima ultra-green it's my line of choice. The color blends in so well with so many different bodies of water.
D10 DozerMan I hear ya I have maxi spools of Ultra-green 4 - 10, using the 12lb Chameleon for those stripers, little tougher to spool than the ultra though.
@@fishingtimeletsgo598 the chameleon is a stiffer line and has better abrasion resistance than the ultra green. I feel the ultra-green has less memory to. I only use ultra-green, like Tim said I do use Maxima fluorocarbon on my finesse rods though.
I actually searched through your previous videos to see what braid you were using for crankbaits and bought 832 for the first time. What are your feelings about the Berkley x9 braid?
They are all good lines, no doubt. But there is nothing, and I mean nothing compared to MaxCuatro. It's more expensive, but it's absolutely amazing. I highly recommend it.
Hey Tim thanks for the great content 👍🏻I know I'm late but if could you please do a video on the different pound braid and leaders that you use for specific applications? Also if you could mention which techniques you don't use braid for, you mentioned crankng in some instances but I'm assuming for jerkbaits you use FC too?
I'm looking to throw braid to leader on my jig rod. Do you have a preference between Maxcuatro vs Suffix 832? I've seen you guys mention both kinds for jigs in the past, so just curious. Thanks!!
I bought braid as my first line…on the pole it said 6-12 lbs so I bought ten. 3rd cast I threw my $12 lure off into the abyss!! I paid $35 for this line (almost half what I paid for the pole and reel combo) but I could easily tear the stuff with my bare hands. They need to note that they’re not equivalent lb tess on the box!!
Maybe you bought bad braid. 10lb braid is equivalent to 10lb mono or fluro with breaking strength. That spool of braid will last you years if taken care of. You will go through lots of spools of mono in the same time. Braid is significantly thinner. That allows throwing lighter lures and casts further. If a rod states 6-12lb line, that means 6-12lb mono diameter. The equivalent braid for diameter would be 30lbs or more braid. Its about diameter not test.
Great video, slowly making the switch to braid on almost all my reels. What pound test braid do you throw on your 7ft med hvy rods, also what pound test leader? What is the lightest pound test praise you throw on a bait caster?
Thanks Tim, Great video and a lot of great information, you and Matt is really on your video’s,on how to do and what works best for you Both , the name of products
Trying swimbait like Gigantarel. Got tranx 400 with 80lb braid... should i use fluorocarbon leader and if so will 25lb floural line be ok and what king of knot... thank you
@TacticalBassin Great Video, So I love to throw a jig usually I throw 17lb flouro would braid to a flouro leader be better? and if so what size braid should I use to a flouro leader.
I just got to work so I haven’t watched but can you please touch up on it reply to this comment about co-polymer line please!! I just ordered a heavy combo for my flipping and pitching with jigs and frogging and I’m going to put about 45 lb braid on and u was going to put about 17 flourocarbon on my current 7’ mh for more of my moving bait applications and maybe worming but I also keep hearing about this co polymer. Can someone please inform me on which is best and why? I would greatly appreciate it
Co polymer is a combination of nylons whereas monofilament is only one. The Maxima Ultragreen that we talk about and recommend is actually a co polymer.
Great content Tim. If I was wanting to go straight flouro, does one have better castability / more manageable than the other. Does one do better with skipping than the other
Thank you! Typically I (Tim) run a longer leader on my finesse setups. Usually my flouro is 10' -15' or so. If Im in deeper, clear water, then Ill go longer. As far as my lager mono leaders fro glide baits and topwaters, I typically try and keep my connection knot just outside of my line guide on my reel. Depending on the length of the rod determines how long my leader will be. Hopefully this makes sense.
I personally have 12lb fluorocarbon in about 20yards worth as a backer and no leader at the end of my 50lb braid. I personally haven't had a problem with to much besides actually using braid for the first time lol.
I use 20 lb mono backing on my 80 lb braid, I don't notice any difference in sensitivity. But that is pretty heavy line and rigs. Should note, this is on mostly musky set-ups and more often than not, for moving baits - FWIW.
its not about humans seeing the line underwater ive been studying line for year and first thing u must ALWAY REMEMBER AND I STRONGLY REMIND YOU YOU MUST ALWAY ALWAYS REMEMBER fish see diffrently to us they can see 3/4 of the light spectrum way more than we can see so i recomend u do a test in salt water then get a white light yellow light ir light red light blue light uv light green light and last of all a thermal camera by doing this u get an understanding of what most fish see hope it helps GOOD FISHING GUYS
I just got an Okuma travel spinning rod and reel combo (size 20 - up to 8# line) for my truck. What would be the best all purpose line to load on it? I’m in the Midwest fishing dirtier waters for bass/crappie and will be fishing both surface and below surface baits. Any help will be appreciated immensely. All my other reels have mono on them but I’m interested in the braid but have never used it before.
I use to never throw top water on floro, but being from Alabama and seeing G man at Guntersville he recommended it for buzzbaits and since using it with them I have noticed more bites and better hook ups. Mono would cause me to not hook up on longer cast and braid I would loose the fish from ripping holes in their mouths. I also use it with ploppers
I use a fluro leader for all my topwater also aside from frogs obviously, the only time you need to worry about fluro sinking is if the bow in the middle of you line when you cast is in the water, that will weigh down everything behind it. But just a leader wont pull down the braid in front of it
Really want to change back to braid but i hate the knot between braid/fluro and the feeling of the knot on a cast, went back to mono now to avoid the knot, using Yo Zuri Hybrid its not a fantastic line but im very satisfied
Great information thank you, I recently bought a small lake house on unfamiliar water... The water is very dark and little to no visibility and I am having a hard time fishing it... I mark fish all day long in great spots and nothing... I use braided line 95% of the time... You talked about clear water but not murky is there something I can do different, a different line or line set up? Thanks for any help in advance 👍
In your case, I suspect it is less about the line and more about lure selection (type & color) and technique (what you're targeting and method/how). Slow down!
Guys! Keep having leader knot failure on my alderbaren. I run braid to leader on almost everything and tie a blood knot. Do not have any other failures. Tieing 15lb 832 to 8-12lb sunline sniper and about a 20ft lead. Knot seems to explode in the reel on the cast. Not everytime but often enough to were it’s definitely an issue. Any suggestions? Thanks
Great Video! Also I’ve got a question. There is this little pond that runs off a lake I fish and it is just filled with Lilly pads in about 6 feet of water. What should I use to catch these fish because I can see them moving the pads.
@@tacticalbassin frogs are topwater right? so top water fishing straight braid is ok with no leader… won’t they see the line or does it not matter too water? Sorry I’ve never fished before I’m waiting for my first spinning reel/rod to be delivered… Shimano Nasci/2500 with Shimano Sellus 7.1 Med/Fast. Seems I should have gotten a bait caster because that’s what everyone uses on RUclips
That Maxcuatro is pretty thin stuff. The 30lb works out to 0.23mm, that’s like 8lb sniper so what’s the thinking of using 15lb braid or less for the finesse applications ? Surely having a thicker leader than braided mainline is going to cause issues.
I absolutely love Sunline crank FC for my bigger cranks but for small square bills I’m just in love with Sunline shooter #12! Insane sensitivity and you absolutely can straighten your hooks with the stuff if you get hung up even with that lighter line (#12)
Great video. How do you get over the fear of the leader knot not holding up? That’s the only thing keeping me from using a leader over straight braid. I don’t trust the knot, or my ability to tie a good enough knot lol
I’ve long been on the braid to leader train. Recently having issues with my PP 30# braid snagging on crank bait (1.5 square bills) casts. The line is catching on itself, not really overrun/backlash. Going back to PP 40lb where I didn’t used to have near as many issues. But any suggestions?
Get a Shimano DC reel! The SLX DC isn't too bad price-wise. Then, LEARN how to set it up (I know, who reads a reel manual, right!). Like you, for MANY years, I only used spinning. Tried a cheaper spinning reel and hated it. Finally learned how to set it up - still mostly hated it. Got a DC reel and spent more time watching how to vids . . . MUCH better. Also, final recommendation, when you first get a caster, start learning with heavier line (50, 65, 80 pound braid) - much easier for the initial learning curve!
Tim how could I get ahold of you or Matt. I would like to switch over to braid and I have a few questions that needs some Suggestions my man..... I would really appreciate the helpful advice. Thanks and God bless.

I only use
ultra-green, like Tim said I do use Maxima fluorocarbon on my finesse rods though.
D10 DozerMan I might try some Maxima Flouro after watching this vid though.
Informative video. I would like it if you had included copolymer as well though.
Been using maxima chameleon line since I was a kid. Best all around in my opinion.
Yes I have been waiting for this vid
I actually searched through your previous videos to see what braid you were using for crankbaits and bought 832 for the first time. What are your feelings about the Berkley x9 braid?
They are all good lines, no doubt. But there is nothing, and I mean nothing compared to MaxCuatro. It's more expensive, but it's absolutely amazing. I highly recommend it.
Nice video Tim. Just right.
For something like an underspin, spinnerbait, swimjig, etc would you use braid to fluoro?
Thanks Tim, Great video and a lot of great information, you and Matt is really on your video’s,on how to do and what works best for you Both , the name of products
Thanks 👍
Trying swimbait like Gigantarel. Got tranx 400 with 80lb braid... should i use fluorocarbon leader and if so will 25lb floural line be ok and what king of knot... thank you
Tim fishing in the north alot I'm sure you know of cortland masterbraid. The best braid hands down
@TacticalBassin Great Video, So I love to throw a jig usually I throw 17lb flouro would braid to a flouro leader be better? and if so what size braid should I use to a flouro leader.
Does one do better with skipping than the other
Awesome video, was curious if you always just go straight mono for topwater or if you have any other methods for topwater?
Do you guys have any experience with seaguar tatsu line? The price is ridiculous but I’ve heard good things (from sponsored pros of course)
Great video awesome tips
Thank you Jose!
Great job as always! Is it possible to go into a little more detail on leader length per technique?
Sounds like I’m gonna have to make the switch to braid! I have some on my spinning combo, but would like to get some lo vis braid for my baitcaster s.
Thoughts on using a heavy mono backing on braid? Does it Hurt sensitivity any? Worth doing?
I personally have 12lb fluorocarbon in about 20yards worth as a backer and no leader at the end of my 50lb braid. I personally haven't had a problem with to much besides actually using braid for the first time lol.
I use 20 lb mono backing on my 80 lb braid, I don't notice any difference in sensitivity. But that is pretty heavy line and rigs. Should note, this is on mostly musky set-ups and more often than not, for moving baits - FWIW.
its not about humans seeing the line underwater ive been studying line for year and first thing u must ALWAY REMEMBER AND I STRONGLY REMIND YOU
YOU MUST ALWAY ALWAYS REMEMBER fish see diffrently to us they can see 3/4 of the light spectrum way more than we can see
so i recomend u do a test in salt water then get a white light yellow light ir light red light blue light uv light green light and last of all a thermal camera by doing this u get an understanding of what most fish see hope it helps
GOOD FISHING GUYS
I only run straight Floro here in Michigan, water clearing is normally pretty high
Also cannot beat the sensitivity
I live in Nashville, TN and occasionally go to Chattanooga. What color braid would you recommend? I was thinking either black or white...?
Interesting. I would think that the fluoro would weigh down the popper and affect the action.
I use a fluro leader for all my topwater also aside from frogs obviously, the only time you need to worry about fluro sinking is if the bow in the middle of you line when you cast is in the water, that will weigh down everything behind it. But just a leader wont pull down the braid in front of it
Good topic
Braid all the way
Really want to change back to braid but i hate the knot between braid/fluro and the feeling of the knot on a cast, went back to mono now to avoid the knot, using Yo Zuri Hybrid its not a fantastic line but im very satisfied
great video for beginner like me.. :)
I would think since the waters murky braid would just fine since visibility sounds poor. Have you not been getting bites?
In your case, I suspect it is less about the line and more about lure selection (type & color) and technique (what you're targeting and method/how). Slow down!
I tried using braid 20 lb test in my bait caster for top water, and I find it carving into the rest of the spool. What do then?
Hey Matt and Tim Yall need to try P line Halo definitely the strongest and most subtle I've tried all the top brands and it's a winner for me
Thanks
sunline asegai is worth the money
Have you guys ever tried gamma fluorocarbon? If so what are you thoughts?
New to fishing, what weight of lines do I need fishing small lakes and rivers with these fishing lines?
What kinda braid is invisible if they have such a kind & brand???
Hey tim what sunline would you recommend for jerkbaits?
Great Video! Also I’ve got a question. There is this little pond that runs off a lake I fish and it is just filled with Lilly pads in about 6 feet of water. What should I use to catch these fish because I can see them moving the pads.
FROG!! Get some 50-65 pound braided line and throw a frog on those pads :)
TacticalBassin any particular frog because I did that and I failed badly 😂
@@zandercostanza they might be carp.
datruth hurts maybe. there are a lot of carp on this lake because the lake runs off the Alabama river
Surely having a thicker leader than braided mainline is going to cause issues.
would you use ultragreen as a leader in tea stained water ? (3-5 feet vis)
big help
ever try the crankbait flouro for a leader due to the increased stretch?
Not sure if I missed it. But what poundtest do you use for your finesse braid?
I’ve had issues with regular power pro breaking off on small fish, is maxcautro any better than regular power pro as far as strength? (I use 30lb)
I love maxcurato for my light techniques, and walleye fishing. Anything over 20 lb, I use 832.
loos15 that’s what’s up, thanks man👊
I absolutely love Sunline crank FC for my bigger cranks but for small square bills I’m just in love with Sunline shooter #12!
Gotta keep tying em on and setting the hook lol
P line flouro clear is awesome line
Whats your guys thinking behind hi-viz braid for baitcasters
Tim do you prefer 12 or 16 sx1 hi vis on your spinning setups?
I’ve long been on the braid to leader train.
Recently having issues with my PP 30# braid snagging on crank bait (1.5 square bills) casts. The line is catching on itself, not really overrun/backlash.
Going back to PP 40lb where I didn’t used to have near as many issues.
But any suggestions?
very helpful
Always used Spinning reels and really want to try baitcasting? Any beginner rod and reel setups or combos y’all suggest? Thanks!
