There is no reason to create a new "competitive/tournament/hardcore" tetris game, this was already made, 30 years ago. The developers are trying to capture the almost meditative aspect of the game, and apparently they are doing a really good job.
Thank you for pointing out that the classic Tetris is CLASSIC Tetris than Tetris Grand Master or Tetris Friends/Battle/PPT, in my opinion each game need their own expertise and have their own experts with Trey being one in classic Tetris. And also thank you for making this follow up video, I have the same question in mind when I first watched the previous video. Keep up the good work!
I agree being someone who plays Modern Tetris that classic Tetris to the billion times harder I probably play faster than Trey but if I were to pick up an NES Tetris and play it I would look like in an unexperienced player
Nice follow up video, and good info for people that don't know much about the NES version. People don't know how different the gameplay, techniques and difficulty are :p, I encourage people to watch some classic tetris world championships, it's actually great to watch. "BOOM, Tetris for Jeff!"

Kudos, Nick, for releasing the continuation of the last vid. Trey is really down to Earth and it feels good that he gave the new Tetris his blessing. I'm not competitive Tetris player myself but I do recognized that every game ever made is different and with my own personal experience very therapeutic. I'm really looking forward to playing Tetris Effect myself. Just watching the trailer itself kinda put me in a Zen-like transe that want me wanted more.
I was sitting here wondering why people were fussing about him not playing cleanly or fast. I stopped playing Tetris after the NES and Gameboy versions. I tried one of them and it just felt different and I didn't like it. I still go back to my gameboy version at times, but I don't see myself playing the newer games unless it is to verse someone else that challenged me at that specific game. Now after seeing the few replays you put in this video, I do see why people said that, but... Those aren't the same game. I agree that the original was unforgiving and I really liked that about the game. Saving blocks for later? I don't think I like that feature.
Yea I played Tetris on PS4, the one that came out and had online issues LOL and I was terrible at it because I'm used to gameboy color Tetris. Tetris Effect I got the hang of quickly though because it's better in VR. I feel like on a flat screen it's harder to play because you don't see the whole screen as easily as with a gameboy or VR headset on.
Trey seems like a top bloke. It is great to nice nature friendly older players than some of the immature idiots that can give gaming a bad name. We need more players like Trey on pro gaming.
@@johnbob914 I actually just started playing a little very recently, after watching classic and modern pros playing. It looks very interesting and the community surrounding these games are so warm.
Looking forward to Tetris Effect. I thought this guy was great. No offense to the speedy players but those versions of Tetris have never looked fun to me. So his play didn't bother me at all.
As long as it's Tetris and I don't have to play it fast. It's fine by me. I have no problem with those versions. Its just I would never play Tetris as fast as you see people playing those versions. It was just nice seeing what the game plays like from a guy who plays it at a speed I would also play it. If it was a guy slamming them down super fast I dont know if I would have even watched the whole video. I like the Lumines games so seeing the cool effects and new music also excites me.
Wow I haven't touched my copy of tetris (nes version) in a lot of time and I always felt something was off when playing grandmaster and this vid finally explained why I felt like that. Thanks Nick
Doesn't even touch on the biggest difference between the two games: the seven bag randomizer, srs, and kick table. Also modern tetris is much more focused on sending lines to your opponent efficiently with t-spins and downstacking efficiently while competitive classic tetris is focused on getting a high score and surviving for a while. People who imply that classic is "harder" than modern because it is easier to survive are missing the whole point.
I'm still blown away by all your content, can't wait for more. I've said it before, but it's very refreshing the variety of stuff you have and the avenue you take it down. The path less taken, continue to be greatness.
Great job covering important topics for competitive skill-based gaming as well as the relevance of low latencies in VR displays as it relates to skill-based gaming.
Wait a moment, are you the guy who went to Domino's headquarters to find out what happened to the Hatsune Miku promotion ad? Man, no doubt why you were on my recommened videos list! Gotta subscribe at a heightened pace
Yeah, those old tetris games are quite brutal. A single mistake can cost you a game almost instantly, and sometimes, at higher speeds and heights I haven't even been able to get a piece across to the side of the screen without it locking in place. (usually in an awkward spot that almost guarantees failure). I'm certainly not some master tetris player, but I'm a lot better at it than my former boyfriend. His competitive streak caused him to try to beat my scores, but he couldn't manage even with about 50 attempts to my one. Anyway, what I learnt to play is the gameboy version, which is firmly in the old school tetris camp. You can't play that at the speeds of modern tetris and have even the slightest hope in hell of managing to even survive, much less get a decent score...
It was really so nice seeing an expert's opinion on Tetris. And the game itself looks so beautiful, too.... Now I want a PlayStation VR. But I'm broke.
I love this perspective of old school vs. new school versions of tetris. I've always seen 1984 tetris tournaments but never the newer versions and i can see that it takes more skill in playing the 1984 version than the newer versions for reasons explained in the video. Players who play 1984 tetris are cleaner than other players who play modern versions because they used to a more stricter/punishing type of version.

@@Tr0lliPop You'll be able to catch up for sure just by practicing in solo gamemodes. There are also different clients which are good for practicing. Nullpomino has tons of gamemodes for things like digging and combo'ing. On YT you can also find good videos about stacking and strategies specific to competitive tetris. Mainly you should play marathon or no-gravity endless modes, stacking with the side well like in NES or stacking with the 4-wide well + residue like you will in your competitive games. Think about as many previews as you can and try to build slow but efficient. The difference between slow and fast players is having experience and intuition on where to put the pieces. You can also learn finesse which will reduce the actual placement time to almost nothing. Then, mix in practicing 40 line sprint or just playing marathon with high PPS. If you play quite a bit, you can probably get to 1.5 PPS in a month. Faster on games like tetrio or jstris where you can customise DAS and ARR.
@@Jerryfan271 Thanks for the tips, this really made my day ^v^ btw, I noticed that I actually play faster without finesse since in my case playing with finesse requires me to stop for an entire second not doing anything on each piece to remember what the finesse for that piece was lmao

Know what, I'm glad you brought this up and articulated the distinction between the two. I never grew up with either form, but the only style of Tetris I ever liked playing was the original, so his playing never scanned as either slow or odd. I'm no pro, but I know the technique of leaving the last row open, and the fact that I learned to do it independently speaks to the unique playing demands of both styles.

One other huge difference between modern and classic that you didnt mention, which bugs me slightly because it is super important. Modern is guaranteed to give you every piece exactly once before they can repeat. Classic doesn't have that, which makes it easier to be screwed by the drops not being what you need.
I watched the fist part of this video and really enjoyed it, I saw this in my recommended watched and enjoyed but what made me subscribe was when you said that these are the kind of videos you would be focusing going forward, that line got me hooked man, eager to see more!
Oh yeah, I'm pretty good at modern Tetris, but NEStris is a whole other beast. I grew up on the original gameboy version, modern Tetris is waaaay more forgiving. I agree with Trey, the new Tetris Effect game almost seems like it's more about an experience with Tetris than anything facilitating competition.
I have no idea why this video was recommended...I just downloaded the game ...best purchase of 2019 so far lol..your videos are great! I just subscribed
So I suddenly got curious and wanted to see how the world's top players, the gods of Tetris (Taiyou Amemiya, Doremy, etc.) would play this game. Holy moly mother of WTF. It's like watching them speedrun Tetris Effect for fun... wait... They're actually speed running it for fun. Didn't even stop them from T-Spinning. And I believe, Taiyou holds the world record, 23:08 mins.
I really appreciate the explanation about classic vs modern tetris and what it changes for competitive play. Although it didn't bother me too much, I was wondering why you were hyping us up so much about Trey, since at first glance I might be able to match his level of gameplay, and I'm nowhere near good at tetris. The explanation cleared up quite a lot of things I was confused about. GJ
I think it is really sad that you had to stick-up for his abilities. He competes for world championships. If he wasn't any good, he wouldn't be competitive and if there was this army of people that were 1000x better, they would come into the NES championship and destroy him just to own that title as well. To me this is like people used to Marvel vs. Capcom questioning why a Street Fighter 1 champion isn't doing 10-hit combos.
Well these two videos definitely made me subscribe. I loved that one of the ultimate Tetris Masters was open to a newer version and something completely different. Also your commentary was quite decent. I look forward to seeing more of stuff like this.
I feel like it's actually easier to appreciate tetris effect from the perspective of an og tetris master because of how different it is visually. Effect is, in my opinion, more visually different from nes tetris than any other tetris game. Something that is more similar visually and functionally makes it easier to tie it to the original, which Trey is more familiar with. Something so different makes it easier to separate the two, and compare them less. Nonetheless, these videos have been fantastic, and I look forward to seeing more projects like this.
Also another aspect of classic vs modern Tetris (probably the biggest difference) is the random piece order of classic Tetris. In modern Tetris, the “seven bag” or the guaranteed sets of seven pieces allows for you to plan for a more consistent build, but classic Tetris can drought your from pieces for a really long time. This means that the players need to play a lot more carefully, since they can’t stall for a needed piece without creating a huge mess of a board.
I think the other big thing that makes classic Tetris players seem slower is the fact that classic Tetris doesn't have the hard drop that instantly snaps a piece to the bottom. Naturally that guy wouldn't be too used to that.

no wonder you were in my recommended :P
DANDAN THE DANDAN Can you tell me what the video is called?
Jacob Best the Domino's Pizza Hatsune Miku one that is featured at the end of the video
I honestly thought it was another guy. I mean, vocaloid and Tetris are miles apart... that's why I was shocked to suddenly realize they're the same guy lol
Holy crap it is.
O snap it's that guy
There is no reason to create a new "competitive/tournament/hardcore" tetris game, this was already made, 30 years ago. The developers are trying to capture the almost meditative aspect of the game, and apparently they are doing a really good job.
Ribas Daniel People would be drooling over TGM4 but the fucking Tetris guidelines is why Tetris has become mechnically stagnated.
Ribas Daniel Yeah, he already said that, and so did the older player😑
K.Louis That and their being so many versions of Tetris, as well as the retro gaming overload the gameing industry is going through.
That's about as dumb as saying there's no reason to create a new meditative, relaxing, visually exciting Tetris game.
And now, I present Tetris 99.
Oh man trey is such a nice dude!!
And he is super handsome
Yeah I'd fugg
No homo?
He ages like wine
Just don't look into his history...

I agree being someone who plays Modern Tetris that classic Tetris to the billion times harder I probably play faster than Trey but if I were to pick up an NES Tetris and play it I would look like in an unexperienced player
Can we PLEASE get more videos like this? I love these semi-documentary videos. Your commentary makes it 100 times better too.
Nice follow up video, and good info for people that don't know much about the NES version. People don't know how different the gameplay, techniques and difficulty are :p, I encourage people to watch some classic tetris world championships, it's actually great to watch. "BOOM, Tetris for Jeff!"
Friend A After watching his original video I ended up watching some Tetris Tournaments and they were actually pretty interesting.
Friend A Yes! Those NES Tetris competitive matches are usually so _NEK N NEK,_ especially because of many smart _PLACE PIECEMENTS._ XD
But seriously, competitive NES Tetris is surprisingly exciting.

Lilla Oshisaure Lol
Lols, i recently started watching your videos and it only just clicked that 'that' part was you
This video is so emotional man I’m gonna cry.
MSZ I thought the first one was more so, because it was his very first time with modern technology.
"Not to get too fake deep or anything"
@@15coals39 not really, it was his first time with a ps4
15 coals Lmao, I'm pretty sure Trey has a modern PC and a smartphone. I doubt he's a caveman who exclusively uses old technology.
trey is like the anti-gatekeeper persona
i think that's a perfect way of putting it. he has such a great attitude and open mind about something he clearly loves a lot! we should all aspire to be like him, imo
You can tell how genuinely excited you are about certain things in the little quiver in your voice. It's really infectious honestly, although I already love tetris the hitman (a game I don't care much about) video you did got me actually pumped for you. I seems you have found the format that makes you happy and I think it comes across in the videos. Keep it up because I am enjoying your enjoyment :)
Aidan ROTF I agree, I am new to his channel and I like this style.
Yeah I agree the games music is god tire and it’s visually amazing so I guess that’s what sold the game for me.
Unfortunately for me, I find the music (at least that song) to be God damn awful. So I'll probably skip getting this game to avoid the cringe.
Music is a big part of the gaming experience for me, so turning the music off isn't an option.
Cat Lover They meant to say "tier"
Sometimes I put god tires on my truck so that when i'm going 100 through a school zone, I can't be stopped by spike strips.
Hurricane
Not sure why, but that kinda got me kek
Niten Dōraku you’re not gonna get it because of the music? Turn it off and find music on RUclips, simple
These two videos made me remember why I loved classic Tetris. Gotta brush off the old NES
I agree with the particle effects. I hope they let us turn it down in the options.
I hope there is a slider and I can increase it :)
I’m sure they are hearing the feedback and will probably fix on release or patch it down the line :)

These two Tetris videos showed up on my recommended list and I'm really glad they did! Just subscribed and am really looking forward to more of this sort of content. Cheers
Sharky Sharklops same! Looks like a great channel!
Love the videos you're putting out lately, man. Great angles and subjects.
Thanks for making this video
just want to say thanks for making this
You just earned a sub with these two videos
Thanks for this. I was one of the guys asking for his input.
Thank you Trey and Nick! :)
We love it!
@@HugoStiglitz88 Tetris on game boy color was tha bomb!! played it it till my neck hurted, lol
Trey seems like a top bloke. It is great to nice nature friendly older players than some of the immature idiots that can give gaming a bad name. We need more players like Trey on pro gaming.
Never touched a Tetris game in my life but I found both parts of this really interesting
Press X to doubt
Who has never played Tetris, you can play it for free online
@@johnbob914 I actually just started playing a little very recently, after watching classic and modern pros playing.
It looks very interesting and the community surrounding these games are so warm.
Looking forward to Tetris Effect. I thought this guy was great. No offense to the speedy players but those versions of Tetris have never looked fun to me. So his play didn't bother me at all.
fatal85 tetris effect is,by all intensive purpouses "one of those games" (srs,hold,7 bag)
I like the Lumines games so seeing the cool effects and new music also excites me.
fatal85 you don't have to play most modern tetris games fast. The only ones where you have to play fast are the tetris grandmaster games
Good to know. I had no idea. This is coming out soon so I may as well wait. Otherwise I'd be picking up the Puyo version from the steam sale.
Totally agree. Classic tetris is much better.
Thanks! Loved your commentary in the livestream chat earlier too hahah
"Tetris doesn't have to be a serious game" - This. What a humble, down to earth dude. I really enjoyed these videos. Well done 👏 👍🏻
Zonical 413 Nick has... rather varied accolades to his name, yes.
God, these documentary-like videos are just so intriguing.
Wow this video answered all questions I had from the last one
Thanks for the follow-up, really needed that to really get how his experience was like, tbh? Worth a subscription

Great follow up
I love this perspective of old school vs. new school versions of tetris.
Thanks, Justin! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed this exploration of the distinction. Obviously both versions are valid, just a little different :)
Tetris effect sounds disturbingly similar to Tetris for Jeff
LOL
BOOM tetris for Jeff!!!!!!!
holy i just finish watching the first video !! you are so talented at making video like this keep it up !!
Subscribed now, I thought I did few days ago when I watched the first video. I'm sure you're one of the best content creators on the rise right now, and you really deserved to appear in the recommended box of every one of us. Thank you!
This is so amazing, these videos just give a special vibe to them.
Love the video, one of the best I've seen in the gaming community.
You've got my subscription man. I really enjoyed the thoughtfulness that went into these videos. It's clear they weren't made just to fill a quota of releasing videos, it's clear that you really wanted to convey an experience and provide viewers with insight! keep it up
Thank you I've been trying to figure out why I can't win Tetris 99. I've been playing playing tetris for the last 25 years with tetris GB as my main form, and have never changed my play style.
It's been two weeks and I can't stop watching, so amazing.
You're seriously an amazing film maker and the way your channel is going is awesome. Becoming a little more serious but also not too serious and it suits your personality. Keep up the great work man :)
Classic Tetris in 2023 beyond level 29+ (the killscreen) is fast af. The rolling technique has made the game absolutely nuts.
What in the hell? If I had the opportunity I would seriously consider selling my soul to play as fast as trey and theres a crap ton of people calling him SLOW?!
Dude you gotta start playing tetris if you're so passionate
@@svendinsvinderlin4569 I like playing tetris and I wanna get into tetris competitively (specifically I wanna get into modern vs tetris) but every time I wanna play I get absolutely bodied even by beginners
I have less than 1 pps(pieces per second) on average
and its just kinda like this loop of "hey I should actually play tetris it is a fun game u know" -> "holy shit Im bad at this game" -> "nevermind I dont wanna play a game where I will always lose"
@@Jerryfan271 Thanks for the tips, this really made my day ^v^ btw, I noticed that I actually play faster without finesse since in my case playing with finesse requires me to stop for an entire second not doing anything on each piece to remember what the finesse for that piece was lmao
check out some tetrio 40 line sprints if you wanna see how fast modern tetris is. it's nuts
The new Tetris Effect Connected has a competitive score attack classic mode that is similar to competitive NES Tetris, along with other new multiplayer modes
You should just marry Trey tbh
thinkin bout it
No homo
Know what, I'm glad you brought this up and articulated the distinction between the two. I never grew up with either form, but the only style of Tetris I ever liked playing was the original, so his playing never scanned as either slow or odd. I'm no pro, but I know the technique of leaving the last row open, and the fact that I learned to do it independently speaks to the unique playing demands of both styles.
I can't belive the face that Rikka Takanashi posted a coment on that vídeo

The fact he mentioned being in the zone when he took off the headset totally supports your “visual headphones” theory as well
I want to see him go against that modern Tetris player in a round of Gameboy/NES Tetris.
that would be so sick hahah
@@babylonian Pretty sure he'd obliterate them. Once you are so used to play in harder mode, you can pretty much play an easier version with little adjusting.
Reverse it... and it'll feel like hell.
That's why not that many people can bear playing Dark Souls type game. And mostly the one that can bear it either used to play old games or enjoy old games.
Old games are ..... freakin punishing. No auto-save, Barely any potions or ammos, no auto-regenerate health, sometimes even perma-death.
Oh ... right... don't forget those ones that deletes your save file without any warning #%#&%@^&$!%!#%#
@@babylonian Next time you visit this man, try covering all the outside part of the Tetris field. And play in mute. Who knows, he might end up destroying current record right off the bat. xD
5:00 i mean yeah but how people stack pieces in classic tetris is far different than people who play modern tetris. Generally, people who mainly play modern tetris stack better in modern tetris, so any experienced modern player is just as fit for the job
Loved these two videos. subbed :]
I'm already subscribed, and have been for a while, but I keep instinctively going for the subscribe button from how much I'm always liking these videos
ok
The speed thing definitely came to my mind when watching the other video. "I play faster than him and I'm just ok'... but your explanation is great.
thank you!
I like how RUclips recommends part 2 to a video I watched a few months ago 10 months after it's out
One other huge difference between modern and classic that you didnt mention, which bugs me slightly because it is super important. Modern is guaranteed to give you every piece exactly once before they can repeat. Classic doesn't have that, which makes it easier to be screwed by the drops not being what you need.
2:44 no, that's a different category of tetris, it's "Tetris The Grand Master", and it is very different compared with modern Tetris
The most important thing when you playing a game is having fun.
GJ
Tetris Effect Connected got recently released with Classic Score Attack, which attempts to mimic NES Tetris and the CTWC format. Take a look?
AND thus! A new fav youtuber of 2018 was born! Subscribed
