I'm sick to my stomach hearing about this case. They should've been fired. No pension or benefits. The Officer's and his supervisor both should be bought up on elder abuse and conspiracy since he wanted to use intimidation. Only sociopaths are entertained by the pain of a injured or vulnerable person.
The only pop I want to hear out of these street thugs is a pop, pop, pop to their egos! Absolute sickness that these bad officers obviously think 🤔 that they are above the law!
@@africansnowqueenqueen3296 Faster documentation of crime scenes and the actions of criminals. Less complaints against the police(due to there being video evidence which can quickly shoot down all the false complaints).
The lack of common sense, decency and humanity is appalling. These officers should be prosecuted. I am proud of the citizen who stood up to the officers. They are thugs clear and simple. I hope Karen Garner is healing mentally and physically.
She is not healing. She is terrified- I just read- it has made her reclusive and fearful according to the article. Dementia is a cruel disease- fear is part of it unfortunately.
Catherine, I read your comment after posting mine. We are on the same wavelength. We both called their behaviors out for what they are, “thugs!” Disgusting 🤮 that they somehow made it through the process to become officers. It makes me wonder if they really even utilized any type of psychological testing when they hired these thugs? Or what kind of softball questions were asked or answered for them to be able to pass and become officers. Here’s a scary thought... they were allowed to carry guns. They make law enforcement more difficult for the good and decent police officers.
Being a retired RN who loved working in long term care taking care of special people just like this little lady, this is heartbreaking. She is such a tiny frail woman and seems so sweet. I'll never understand why people do the things they do.
As someone in the medical profession, I'm sure you recognize a sociopath when you see one. All three of these officers(the two that arrested her and the sergeant who signed off on the arrest) have no integrity nor personal conscience.
@@lccsamuel No, they need to check out those whom they hire for jobs in governmental positions for severe mental issues. All the ones involved here are sadistic psychopaths. Such creeps have nothing to do in any job, leave alone in a job with the police or similar.
80 pounds of elderly woman was a threat? No. This was cruelty just for the thrill. Shameful and truly disturbing. A BIG thank you to the concerned citizen.
That man stood up to that vicious gang of thugs and didn’t back down. I hope he’s around if my grandmother is in need if I can’t be. Better yet, I hope I can help out his.
Mike Vincent, It’s a wicked number regardless and they don’t seem to mind that they are in the sights now. Downright basking in an imaginary sun that we just can’t see.
99 percent of time back the blue but agree a elderly 80 pound woman with a cell phone and flowers are zero threat to to male officers this still has me steamed that could be my mom or grandma its BS. There superiors should also be held accountable
I agree, 100 %. They should be on at ALL times. Many people work with cameras on them all day. Why shouldn't they? If they're on duty, the cameras should be on.
Rigth? I don't find the solution that difficult. Everyone needs privacy. They dont need to have it on all the time. But it must be forbidden to switch it off during an interaction with civilians. They are obviouly hidding their own actions. That should be already a sign of a crime is taking place.
*Unless requested to do so by the person who needs a private word. Informants sometimes need to say something - but will be killed if they do it on-cam. (I'm thinking gangster tip-offs, murders, etc.)
It's concerning enough that they kept abusing her over and over again, but the fact that they were so joyful while rewatching an old woman's pain and suffering gives me major psychopathic vibes.
Exactly what I was questioning. What is worse? The actual initial incident or the fact that they continued to abuse her in lockup and then proceeded to watch the bodycam footage and laughed. It's so reprehensible. I have no doubt her family complained or spoke to the brass about the condition of her mother once she was taken to the hospital. Let's not forget Walmart's involvement in all this either!
@@sarahholland2600 there was a case a few years ago of a guy who wanted to enter the police force but he scored too high on an intelligence test so he sued. I think the police want people who can operate without thinking or questioning their directives.
In the video of the officers watching the body camera, the arresting officer is heard saying, "Here comes the pop." He knew he injured her at the time it happened and knew she was sitting in the cell injured while he and his comrades viewed and laughed at the tape.
That is hideous- goodness knows what these people inflict on their own families. They should not be allowed to resign, they should be prosecuted to the full extent allowed.
Osteoporosis, brittle bones. Do these officers have aged parents or do their children have grandparents. Ignorance is no excuse for the law and they the police were ignorant and they are law enforcers. Most aged women suffer with brittle bones and to intentionally here comes the pop is ignorance.
They sound like sociopaths. They should be kept away from society at all costs - who know what other crimes they could commit. Jail them for life because they cannot be rehabilitated. Sickos
And also the increasing militarisation of the police- both in practice as well as their outlook. Think back to 30 years ago, and what police looked like. Then look at them now- in a lot of cases they look exactly the same as soldiers, but in different colours.
@@ozrob76 They were even worse 30 years ago. I can only imagine how many lives those order following tyrants destroyed due to no cameras and their word against ours.
The citizen that confronted the police is absolutely a HERO! Thankfully he was not injured, but that poor woman 😢 I pray that she heals and can recover from the assault ! My heart breaks for the pain and suffering she had to endure from those awful police officers .
@@evamarek5205 Sadly, she has dementia and supposedly the trauma of this event made it even worse. Her family says she hasn’t snapped out of it since. :(
The fact that he was proud of himself for what he did to Karen is disturbing. Thank God that the citizen witness what was going on and spoke up. Great video Dr Grande!!
Reminds me of serial killer Todd Koehlhopp bragging during his confession about the speed of his mass murder, "You woulda been proud of me, I cleared the room in 3 seconds." These cops might have been proud of him since they seem like similar psychopaths. Citizens used for weapon's training practice.
@CarlyKpdx Years ago my mother dislocated her shoulder and she was screaming in agony, so when I heard this story it broke my heart bc I remembered her pain, I think if Karen was my mother and the police had hurt her in this way I honestly would want to inflict severe damage to them, they would have to lock me up.
The video from the jail is absolutely sickening. The sheer glee in Hopp's voice when he realizes that he can use force on an old lady is nothing short of evil. He sounds like a 10-year old opening a long awaited Christmas present. Then he is proud of dislocating her shoulder.
This is one "person" who should end up, not only in prison, but in the general population of that prison. Let's see how much he enjoys sadism then. And, it always gets back to inmates what crime each other has committed. That's what my brother, a former prison guard, has told me. Talk about justice served! 😆 😡
I watched this full bodycam video, and it broke my heart. Her repeated statement, "I'm going home!" brought tears to my eyes. This is some of the most clueless policing I have ever seen, and the WAL MART employees were clueless @$$wholes, too, and made the situation worse by refusing to let her pay for her merchandise. WAL MART should also be sued for their part of this. NONE of those three officers should ever be licensed as law enforcement officers again anywhere.
The officers belong in prison for assaulting Mrs Garner. I hope they don't have kids. Someone who abuses the elderly, will happily abuse children too. I hate cowards.
@@msi8311 are you actually going to try to blame anyone else for the officers violent behaviour? Surely we should be able to rely on the police to help people with dementia or any other cognitive impairment should they become lost or disoriented. We shouldn't be fearful that officers will break arms, sprain wrists, dislocate shoulders, leave someone in a police station for hours with no medical help while they're laughing at their body cam footage of the " arrest ". By the way, this was part of the victims routine .......watch the interview with her daughter.
There is a true hero in what was filmed. That is the concerned citizen who at the risk of his life and health protested the vicious treatment of the old lady.
My standards for heroes are higher. While it was ballsy for the man to speak up against the cops, a real hero to me would have neutralized the threat if you know what I mean. That's what the second amendment is for and these cops need to be treated like the dangerous pests they are. Fish in a barrel too. They're so used to getting their way beating on and shooting unarmed civilians they won't know what to do especially while distracted by their prey, in this case an elderly woman.
I hope they didn't think that by resigning they would escape prosecution for this. I hope they throw the book at them. An utter disgrace to their profession.
They do psych tests on cops. The cops cheat. There are services out there to help cops cheat on the psych-evals. Seriously. It's a sham. What's necessary is to test and retest cops at random intervals to catch them slipping up. Barring trait neuroticism (which can be changed through therapy), the factors of personality don't really change that much over the course of our lives unless something major happens.
I've yet to see a good cop. In any video. I have not seen one officer stop another officer from using excessive force. Ever. And if they don't stop it, they are not a good cop. It really is that simple. People say they - good cops, exist. I need proof.
Social Commentary 101 it depends. In my state, they are only now considering legislation for mandatory psychology testing. But who knows how well that could work, anyway. I don’t think personality typing really helps with this, to begin with
I’ve listened to dozens of your videos involving vicious murder, horrific abuse, and sociopathic serial killers, but none of those affected me like this one. As I listened, I found myself vacillating between a deep sense of rage and overwhelming sorrow. For the first time since discovering your channel, I cried. Dr. Grande, I applaud your ability to remain calm and rational while explaining a situation which obviously deeply upset and concerned you! I could never have maintained the level of professionalism you exhibited during this video.
There were others who stopped to look, and probably took videos, but did not confront the beasts assaulting Karen Garner. Approaching them was a brave selfless move on the part of that man. He truly was a hero.
This is absolutely heartbreaking. The feds need to investigate the whole department. Hats off to the man who intervened he's a goddamn hero. Give him the key to the city.
The feds are no better. Someone I know was taken to federal prison by fed agents. When they got my friend in the elevator to take him away I heard a loud thud. Later I found out that they bashed his head into the wall. My friend was going to fed prison. He was handcuffed and getting ready to do his time and they still felt the need to abuse the inmate. Lost all respect for fed agents. They are just as dirty as the cops.
This is horrific. I have dislocated my shoulder multiple times (if it happens once it is very vulnerable to being dislocated again) and the pain is EXCRUCIATING. This poor woman. And ppl wonder why police are losing trust & respect everywhere.
And what exactly is your expertise in law enforcement or credentials in dealing with dementia? You do seem to be really good at armchair quarterbacking and playing "holier than thou". People don't wonder why police are losing trust and respect everywhere, they wonder why people can so easily condemn others knowing so little. Your comment doesn't make you part of the solution honey, just part of the problem.
A teeny, tiny, frail old lady. I hope they all get terminated and Karen's family crushes the whole department. I lived in Denver, the cops were all a**holes.
In Italy there was a similar case some months ago: an elder man stole some goods from a supermarket. Police intervened and I'm glad to tell that no force was used, but instead the police officer used kindness to explain to him the fact wasn't fair and was understanding and helped the man buying all the goods especially the chocolate he wanted to give to his grandchildren. I rely on this kind of people but actually I'm scared about how easy comes to other ones this type of nonsense behaviour and violence. Thanks for the work and the educational contents (◍•ᴗ•◍)
That whole department needs to be purged and every officer that laid eyes on that lady need to be in jail. I've watched all the footage and it's some of the most vile behavior I have ever seen.
Training.? How about some effective leadership. 3 Sgt's were either present, or signed off on the false reports. They had done nothing wrong...until after the lawsuit. Thank you for tackling this event. It is so alarming to watch the original cop video, it remained with me for several weeks. Your interpretation and analysis of the video's surrounding this case is so important . I'm 9 years younger then this victim it scares me to think I may become a victim due to dementia arising in my brothers who are 11 and 9 years older then I . What type of individuals could do this to another individual? I think I'm overwhelmed of this whole incident , yet no one reported it to the Chief . Truth and honor seems to have fallen away from our collective conciousness.
It is now 11 months since the attack. I watched an interview of Ms Garner's daughter. Her mother is still asking "why did they hurt me?" The family is extremely traumatized. Throughout the interview, the daughter was weeping with emotional pain and disbelief, as though it had happened yesterday. This is why police reform is not a dirty phrase.
She was very traumatized aside from her mother. It's hard to believe police would dare to do such a thing to an 80 pound senior citizen. Blue Team did not have them covered that time.
It's likely now that certain members of that family will never trust police again. If a decent police officer needs their help, he may be denied or ignored because of what these evil psychopathic cops did. "earning the hate" is what it's called and it harms good cops the most. The reason officer suicide is so high is because the ones with a conscience can't live with what they see. Cops like the ones in this video could not care less about their reign of terror over humanity so they will never kill themselves.

These police are the place to go to ,if you want a gun or auto parts or construction material. they just do what they want when they are on duty, and choose to patrol areas where one of their friends are ripping off a construction site or robbing a auto parts store etc. They only hang out with each other cause no one likes to party with a cop. they are like a huge crime family. What is so pathetic about this case is there was a very similar incident months before. A male senior citizen just had shoulder surgery and was ILLEGALLY arrested by a Loveland cop. The police chief, their training officer, the city council, and the Mayor DID NOTHING to these three officers. The Loveland police made no policy changes, no corrective training requirements. @@wallpello_1534 That would make sense if "police" were a single monolithic unit with perfect information, ability to predict the future, and automatic capability to make changes. But we live in the real world, where changes take time, you can't always predict which officer is going to abuse their power, and there is an enormous amount of bureaucracy. The 3 officers involved are no longer police officers. Can't you see that as a success instead of a failure? You seem like a young person who hasn't had to work for or manage any organization yet. If this does not get lots of news attention, will it be brushed under the rug like it had been for a year Police Chief press conference a joke. Does he think the public believes he did not know was a 73 year old woman injured in his custody. If this is true shame on him also
The chief of police wouldn't say in his public statement whether they resigned or were fired. It had to come out later that they just got to resign with benefits. So the chief is dirty as hell too.
BTW l should explain why these changes were made. Four policewoman were called out to a young man with mental health issues. He was stabbing himself in the neck,no harm to the police. They shot him in the back. They lied and colluded to say he was violent. They got found out , and the public were furious, that is one of the reasons for change for police to call on the help of the mental health services. I personally hope those four women get life sentences.
Thank you for covering this, her case is so sad and horrible. This is such an important issue because we need to figure out how to prevent this sort of thing from happening and it starts with the awareness that videos like yours and your channel can help create.
It is learned behavior that creates such malignant mind set in police officers,,,is it a culture of violence, hate, and sadistic fraternity of men and women
I've always wondered why the hell they have on/off switches. It should stay on whenever they are on the clock, and acting under "color of law".... when they punch out for a break or to go home it can go off, and they can save whatever private conversations they need to have until they are off duty. Simple as that.
This story broke my heart. It’s beyond me the fact that none of the Walmart workers nor the police were able to spot her odd behavior and consider that maybe she has a mental illness. The behavior of someone with dementia may not be too clear at first but after just a few minutes is easy to see that “something is different.” I work in a dementia unit and I can attest to the fact that it doesn’t take a great deal of sensitivity for someone to notice the unusual behavior. In addition, the aggression from the police was appalling. It makes so sad because I know that dementia sufferers cannot defend themselves, yet this woman was abused in the worst possible way. Thank you so much for making this video Dr. Grande! ❤️
It may be different behaviour, but if she tried/did pull the mask off an employee, she is a risk to staff. Unfortunately the only people to contact are the police incase she did the same to someone else. Its terrible what the police did, but how would staff know police would treat her like that? Also, unfortunately its not walmart staffs job to diagnose conditions. One persons "someone is slightly off" is anothers "angry and violent".
@@philwill0123 You’re right in some ways. Not everyone can know how to recognize everything. But it’s clear from the description she was somewhat frustrating for people to deal with - not dangerous. And, part of the point of the protests is to build the awareness so that people DO know now that, when you call the police, you are genuinely bringing extreme potential danger to the person you call them on, no matter how gently behaved that person is. No one is safe when the police are the ones creating the danger. This is also why people say we need to defund the police. The point is not only for them to take less money, though that’s part of it - it’s also to REINVEST in creating alternate ways for people to get help. Police are sent to handle situations and the tool they are given is a gun. We need public service workers who can deal with these things instead of them.
Working with dementia patients you may have some insight. Karen also had aphasia. I am wondering if the aphasia might explained her motivation in trying to unmask the employee. Perhaps she thought the mask was interfering with her understanding. I also think it could be possible that the Walmart employee called out of concern for Karen. If she was a regular customer and acting oddly (she had not paid), they could have thought she needed help.
Thank you Dr. Grande. You've got me so interested in mental health issues. It is fascinating to me. Your knowledge is appreciated and your ability to take complex mental issues and make it easier to understand as astronomical. 3 years study in college was waisted, I wish we had RUclips back then when I was in school. I would have passed with flying colors with you as a guide. Not to mention how entertaining you can make out of the most mundane. And for this we thank you.
Christ almighty, this is horrifying. These two should be in prison, and they should get harsher sentences because they were cops when they assaulted her.
My mum could have been this lady. She’s now sadly passed, but I am so grateful she was cared for by wonderful nursing home staff alongside her family. I felt physically ill when I heard this ladies arm pop. These people have no shame and no humanity.
In looking at the Walmart footage I also wasn't comfortable with the way the Walmart employee handled the matter, physically stopping the woman. I worked at a retail supermarket during high school in an area that was heavily senior citizen, many with some form of dementia or poor memory and we were outright told we'd be fired if we tried to physically stop anyone - even if they were suspected of shoplifting. Reason being it was very common for elderly customers to walk out of the store with items they had no idea they didn't pay for. In like 99% of these instances, all you have to do is kindly approach the person and let them know they have items they didn't pay for and they'd apologize and return to pay. In other cases, customers would try to drive home in the store scooters, forgetting they were store property. When that happened, the usual outcome was usually either the police or a store employee getting the scooter back and giving the person a ride home. These things do not need to be escalated into a criminal matter.
I'm seeing elder abuse at several degrees of seriousness more and more frequently these days. So sad. 🌸💛🌸 poor woman. I hope the two police get fired and some form of punishment. Terrible people who harm the vulnerable using their position of authority. Shameful.
Literally, cops will roam around with nothing to do and then just show up when they hear someone nearby is arresting someone because it’s something to do. I can imagine it also helps them justify their budgets later, too. “Look at all the times we had 3 cops on the scene. Clearly we can’t get by with fewer police in this city. Also please increase our share of the city’s revenue this year, thank you. Just imagine the chaos that would be released if you didn’t give us everything we ask for to do our jobs. You need us, and you need us by this many millions, thank you Mayor.” 🙄
I cannot even estimate the number of times I had to safely restrain violent teenage boys while working in group homes. If I could do that safely, a cop should be able to safely manage an 80lb woman. Cop was just a sadist.

I cannot imagine how much pain that poor woman was in. Heartbreaking. These cops are monsters. Edit: on another level, people and businesses need to be able to know that when they call the police for assistance, they aren't condemning the person to abuse or worse. The loss of trust goes very deep and spreads very far.
I think calling the police when there is no immediate threat or danger is not only irresponsible but also dangerous. File a report, don't call the people with the guns. She pulled a mask and left, no one needed medical attention.
I got reprimanded at best buy years ago for refusing to call police on a shoplifter......a teenage or younger black kid who snagged a candy bar and ran out the door. I straight up told my boss "I'm not being responsible for getting someone hurt, I'm just here to sell phones man" After that job I was the lifeguard manager/assistant manager at a Waterpark (tremendous fun, as you would imagine) but one of my rules was cops are a last resort, thankfully the manager running the place was someone with some troubled police experiences and agreed with me. I did more good at that job than I probably should have for people but I never wanted to see a cop in my park, it made EVERYONE on edge (remember, all the lifeguards I'm responsible for are dumb 17 to 20 year Olds who are probably high and hungover)
I have not heard about this before today - and I am crying to think these people wear a uniform that is a police officer's uniform and not a prison issue uniform - this woman - small woman - a mentally unwell woman was attacked by people we are supposed to trust. And when the Police want respect they need to show they are respectful of both humanity and THE LAW. This is incredibly distressing because I do not care that they resigned. They need to stand trial. And yes, the body cam needs to stay on. You can hear her shoulder pop out? Ever seen a person with a dislocated joint? It is agonising for them. And it cannot be faked.
I think body cams should be on at all times. Most people who are at work are being monitored for an entire shift and that’s only in the case of things like missing cash. A human life is worth more than that.
I agree. There might be some exceptions, but I can't think of any right now. Privacy is for when you're in a private space. That would be when you're out of uniform. I've long had the assumption that, any time I'm in a public space, I could be being recorded. To put it another way: If there could be a cop there, in uniform or not, I assume a camera could be. So why would a cop have more privacy than I do?
I completely agree. They are being paid with taxpayer dollars and when they are on duty there is no privacy. Unfortunately when given the choice some of these police officers decided to turn the cameras off and if there was not a bystander there would’ve been no recording of the incident. We need to make these police officers accountable for their actions.
This situation was horrific. I hope charges are brought against the 2 officers that abused that woman. And thank you, thank you to the gentleman that stopped and tried to help Ms Garner.
So thankful Hop got 5 years and Jalali 45 days and Garner's family says she doesn't remember what happened. Terrible occurrence but grateful for the resolution
Thank you Dr. Grande for sharing your thoughts on this. I hope this story gets as much coverage as possible. What that lady went through should have never had happened. God bless the man who intervened and kept his composure even when the cops were trying to intimidate him. I hope the lady heals and gets justice for what happened.
Thanks for bringing attention to this. I've watched a ton of Dr Grande's content, but this is the first time a story has made me physically ill; took me by surprise I guess. The idea that a little old person, who's suffering already has caused them to become ignorant and innocent to their environment, can be treated that harshly by supermarket staff alone I thought was already disappointing.. Then the very idea that she was disorientated and had no understanding of why she was suddenly being humiliated and in severe pain (more violent physical pain than what most people living in the first world likely ever endure) is just enough to make you sick... I sincerely hope that the one "benefit" of her challenging illness comes through and relieves her of the memory of this incident.
Maybe it's "store policy" I don't know, but shame on Walmart to call the police on her in the first place! She offered to pay for the items when they brought her back into the store. She must have been to that Walmart many times before without incident. Couldn't they have just tried to get ahold of her family instead? There is so little, too little compassion or empathy in the world today. Oh and I hope those cops, especially the one in particular all get everything they deserve for what they did to this poor old lady.
They outsource security. The security companies want to make every "incident" into a crime so they don't lose the contract. Welcome to Walmart--we'll hurt you to save a buck!
As an officer back in the '60's, we would have taken Karen home and made sure that there was a responsible person there to oversee her welfare. The officer's behavior in this case was shockingly cruel, brutal, and insensitive, and the Sgt. failed on many levels to do his job properly. The police today appear to be very aggressive, trigger happy, and have adopted a military model as their guide. Thank goodness for the phone cameras.
In my experience many individuals in the military behave so much better than these police thugs. Unfortunately the police have been given a monopoly on violence.
yes, that’s what fifty years of a war on some will do to the police. I knew it from day one…where were you the last fifty years? You were helping prosecute the sick drug war.
Hello Sir! I love your comment regarding what an officer back in the '60's would have done. I was born in '53, so I was 7 years old in 1960. The local police chief lived 5 doors down from our family's home, and I would often see him walking past our house to work, in his uniform! (I'm not suggesting he walked to work every day, but he did on occasion!) I would greatly enjoy your perspective on this difficult question: What needs to happen TODAY to change the way LE interacts with citizens? I have watched literally HUNDREDS of RUclips videos showing aggressive, violent interactions between police and civilians. They included countless LE officers threatening civilians for either recording them with their cell phones or simply speaking up to the LEO about overly-violent actions. As a group, LEOs seem to be OBLVIOUS to the fact(s) that the US Constitution gives the public the right to film them, and also protects citizens from being stopped without any legitimate reason, and then demand the citizen "show me your ID (Identification). WHY are LEOs not taught the basic fundamentals of the Constitution as it relates to citizens rights? I would greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts!
Disgusting how people are treated. I had an awful experience with police as well, but nothing like this. I was absolutely terrified, and still can't begin to imagine how that woman (and many other) must have felt. I came across a story of a young man Ryan Waller who had been shot in the head and yet he was held for over 6hrs and put through interrogation while suffering from a traumatic brain injury.
Ryan Waller did not show up for Christmas dinner with his family. His father called the police station to request a "wellness check." When police arrived to Ryan's residence, they found him injured but responsive along with a young woman found dead from gunshot wounds on the couch of Ryan's home. Several times during the interrogation, Ryan complained of head pain, repeatedly requested to go to sleep (both clear sign of brain trauma, not to mention the wounds clearly visible on Ryan's face while he told them he had been shot), and even more incredible, Ryan Waller named the men who shot both he and his girlfriend. He was a hero and got justice for his girlfriend Heather despite what he was put through.
Dr. Grande, it seems you've read my mind!!! This is one(of the many)case that has weighed heavily on me. My father suffered and eventually succumbed to Lewy Body Dementia and it pained me to watch these officers torturing this poor woman. They kept telling her to quit grabbing onto them and my mind went racing back to the many times my father would behave exactly like that. I am also an RN with over 30yrs experience, so I can quickly assess patients and their behavior. It really doesn't take very long, perhaps a minute or two, to see that you are dealing with a person who has an altered level of understanding. Many times, people suffering from Dementia, will grab hold of others because they feel like they are falling. It's pitiful what this sweet, innocent woman went through and I pray she receives justice. Sadly, the trauma of this altercation may cause major regression and an increase in her symptoms. My heart goes out to her and her family. I'm sure they are all heart-broken and bewildered by the criminal activity that was perpetrated against their loved one that day. I am watching this case and praying that those officers are held CRIMINALLY and FINANCIALLY accountable. What is done to the LEAST of us should be shone in the brightest 💡 of lights!!! She needed HELP, not ABUSE! Shame on everyone who took part or laughed at this innocent woman. She deserved so much BETTER!!!
@@lylarose2696 The family should have taken her to and from Walmart when she wanted to go, and shopped and walked with her when there.. A person that far gone NEEDS family to help them. i think things like this really cement the connection between the nature of the position, and how many serial killers have wanted the job, and how much domestic violence is perpetrated by police.
It begs the question: are there any psych evals done for entry into law enforcement, and if so the evals must be a joke. We need a better vetting system.
Your analysis was almost totally spot on. About the only thing you missed was the fist bumps they celebrated with while watching the video. I saw it happen on another channel. Each time I recalled the video I was boiling at her mistreatment. I would take my mom to walk as we shopped and she had an ability to exit the restrooms before me so I often ended up frantically searching to make sure no one lead her away. I would attempt to contact security at times and their reply would be she’s not going anywhere, you’ll find her when the store closes. I was appalled by their lack of concern. No sense of urgency to find her in case someone tried to mug her or lead her away. I slowly realized we were on our own.
When I hear about cases like Sylvia Likens, I wonder what kind of people could even think of harming someone who can't defend themselves for their own entertainment. These are some of those people.
I'm thinking Sylvia is that poor girl that was beaten up over time by her guardian. The guardian would get other minors to beat her, and she died. I think a society is deemed civilised by how vulnerable people are cared for☘🇮🇪🧚♂️ It's just not acceptable
I saw on the news here in Australia that these two officers high five’d each other because they heard her shoulder pop when it dislocated 🤬🤬🤬🤬 wtf is wrong with people?!
Karen’s daughter said in the media interview that when she goes to visit her mother, she wants to hug her mom but she pushes her away as if to say she doesn’t trust anyone anymore. To this day she keeps asking why did they hurt me so bad. That just breaks the family’s heart. Those cops were acting like demons.
I fucking cried listening to you describe this. No other media outlet gave the detail that you did. Thank you, as always, for your input and informative videos.
if you search on RUclips you can see 1.the entire event. look for the one that's about an hour long. 2. the booking video - look for the one that's about 2 hours long. both videos will leave you completely dumbfounded as to what happened. I am more sympathetic for officer Jallali since she did NOT arrive on scene until nearly all violence had occurred. She did help in hog tying Garner's legs, but that was of little merit or injury in comparison to what officer Hoppe did. When the Sgt Metzler arrives on scene he was ONLY willing to listen to Hoppes' lies and gave NO consideration to the citizen's report. Both Hoppe and Metzler should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Jallali faces misdemeanor charges of failure to render aide, prevent the other officers from making false reports, and failure to report the incident to higher authorities. I agree with those. The REAL culprits are the 'higher level' officers who reviewed these videos and didn't alert the Chief of Police. Officer Hoppe states that 1. he was aware that Walmart had reported ALL items were recovered before she left the store. Since that was true - WHAT possible crime had she committed? Picking roadside flowers? That He WAS aware that he dislocated her shoulder, and probably broke her arm (watch the video). office Hoppe=Despicable human. I wouldn't trust him to flip hamburgers at McDonalds.
That was exactly what I thought, too! Many years ago, I used a self-checkout register in a grocery store. After I *thought* I'd completed my purchase, I headed out of the store and across the parking lot. Three employees came chasing after me in the lot. When they reached me, one said, "Excuse me, but I think that you forgot to scan the soft drink cartons in the bottom of your cart." I was so embarrassed - and I wasn't even hampered with a mental health issue - but they were very quick to say, "No, don't worry. It happens. People just get distracted sometimes. You can just come back in to pay for them." People (with and without mental health issues) make mistakes. She tried to rectify hers. It's really inexcusable that both the Walmart staff and the police dealt with her so viciously.
In many places, Wal-Mart outsources security. If an item doesn't scan properly as you're doing self-checkout, they will detain you and have the police arrest you, even if you offer to pay for the items. For Wal-Mart, it's all about the money they save out-sourcing store security; for the company they out-source to, it's all about keeping the contract by making sure people get arrested and never get a chance to explain, pay, or apologize--and if you do apologize, they consider it an admission of guilt.
Thank you for the video, Dr. Grande! Your assessment was in my opinion accurate considering all the facts of the case. It was straight-forward and direct, the best way things could ever be. Three cheers for the citizen who recorded the incident. He deserves a medal. I hope you have a good day, Cheers from Vegas!
As a side note (there are overzealous, aggressive, dangerous cops everywhere, I'm aware) the police in the USA seems so extreme and wrong and dangerous from a European point of view...😶
They are because they are not held accountable because they have qualified immunity. If ever they are found to be in the wrong they get to resign then go get a job the next county over. Over here in the US the wealthy are left alone as the middle class and poor are the targeted because they usually can't afford to hire attorneys to fight cases. Meaning they have to either pay the fine or do the time. Its a huge money making system over here in the states.

There were others who stopped to look, and probably took videos, but did not confront the beasts assaulting Karen Garner. Approaching them was a brave selfless move on the part of that man. He truly was a hero.
I would love to by him a beer or something. I live in loveland and would like to thank him for being so heroic

Wow! My dad (prior to his death) was an older man with Dementia who lived in Loveland, Colorado. This hits close to home.
"I didn't beat up a young kid, you fool, I BEAT UP AN OLD LADY" this case makes me sick.

Very true.
I’ve known good guys who become cops and it’s like someone injected them with asshole serum or something.
It happens so fast too. A couple weeks on the job and boom instantly they become mentality unstable.
Yet still these well protective gear and armed up power pussies were "afraid for their own safety"! No fear is even audible and/or detected in the video recording. Arrogance, sick and sadistic pleasure is!
she is a white woman at that, her life matters
Police reform is a necessary phrase imo
Then the family needs to watch her. She was walking on the road
@@gc8024 that’s one thing I wanted to know about, why was she by herself walking down the road to Walmart? She needs to be in a nursing home if they can’t take care of her! That’s like letting a toddler walk to the store alone!

Just think: it could very well BE your mother next time.
We all have to start keeping these guys accountable for their actions.
Not to mention these cops are perpetrating these acts while on our tax-paid dollars!
If it was my mother then my family would start by following these cowards home ( need their addresses) and take it from there. My mother is 80-85 lbs with dementia. How would these abusers like it if the same was done to someone they loved? It's beyond disgusting.

He didn’t even take administrative punitive or corrective actions on these officers. It took PUBLIC PRESSURE and outside legal actions months after the fact before anything was done. The coward police chief Bob Ticer washed his hands and left Loveland Co for another police chief position in Prescott Valley, AZ. He could no longer face the embarrassment of his failed and criminal leadership in Loveland.
And law enforcement wonders why nobody trusts them. It's baffling.

I faced a lady like this when I worked in Best Buy, I have handled her kind and gentle Best Buy was very caring.

Until pig's families get murdered. Oh then they care!
I'm seeing elder abuse at several degrees of seriousness more and more frequently these days. So sad. 🌸💛🌸 poor woman. I hope the two police get fired and some form of punishment. Terrible people who harm the vulnerable using their position of authority. Shameful.
Imagine being such a coward that you need two people to arrest an 80 pound elderly woman

I straight up told my boss "I'm not being responsible for getting someone hurt, I'm just here to sell phones man"
After that job I was the lifeguard manager/assistant manager at a Waterpark (tremendous fun, as you would imagine) but one of my rules was cops are a last resort, thankfully the manager running the place was someone with some troubled police experiences and agreed with me. I did more good at that job than I probably should have for people but I never wanted to see a cop in my park, it made EVERYONE on edge (remember, all the lifeguards I'm responsible for are dumb 17 to 20 year Olds who are probably high and hungover)
The Walmart employees showed an utter lack of common sense and compassion. The police, well there are no words.
When I read your topic, I almost didn't click as I know the story and it just hurts so much. Thank you for covering this Dr. Grande.💕
Preach!

That was my first thought too! Walmart is an evil and greedy company. 🥵
This made me absolutely sick to my stomach when I saw the footage. That could easily be my or anyone’s mother.
This is truly makes my heart ache. Imagine how scared and in pain she was.
Mine as well💔 This case has haunted me.
I appreciate Dr. Grande for standing against and destroying certain mental health stigmas and the abuse of those afflicted. Well done!
These events are truly frightening. Yes, you are right the citizen recording is a hero.
He is now being harassed by that very same police department.. They are making his life hell...
O.M.G.

@@LaceyAnn Jesus, that's insane.
@@DippieHippie Thanks! I'll correct
Shouldn’t the family be held accountable as well, for not looking after Karen Garner and leaving her alone?
@@lylarose2696 The family should have taken her to and from Walmart when she wanted to go, and shopped and walked with her when there.. A person that far gone NEEDS family to help them. Taking care of them at home is always best, not in an institution., unless their condition calls for it. I am caring for my wife of 41 years right now. I am her Caregiver.. The Karen Garner case is very upsetting to me.
It is very disturbing to hear how this lady was treated. It's heartbreaking. All police cams must be on 24/7.Globally
i think things like this really cement the connection between the nature of the position, and how many serial killers have wanted the job, and how much domestic violence is perpetrated by police.
Exactly! Much like animal abusers. Elderly and babies are defenseless.
I saw on the news here in Australia that these two officers high five’d each other because they heard her shoulder pop when it dislocated 🤬🤬🤬🤬 wtf is wrong with people?!
The state of it
They deserve the express trip to prison general population.
😭
if you search on RUclips you can see 1.the entire event. look for the one that's about an hour long. 2. the booking video - look for the one that's about 2 hours long. both videos will leave you completely dumbfounded as to what happened.
What if the store employees had simply said: "Excuse us ma'am, but did you forget to pay for these?"
that's how it used to be done back in the 1960-70s
@@echoecho6479 Unfortunately, I need to gently correct you - this is how it used to be done *for white people* in the 1960s-1970s.

@@rjskum688 well, that's terrifying. What a corrupt system.
@@juliaestellesylviawalks5074 I will say there are some good police here as well. There are the ones that really want to help people. They get overshadowed by the bad unfortunately.
@@rjskum688 same in France 🇫🇷. We also have police abusing their power and it's scary. But there are helpful officers too. I guess it all comes down to the individuals and many factors but when it's redundant something should be done 😒
@Mo Elm I was not born yet in the 60s. Of course it's despicable and always was. I'm not going to say I don't care about that woman because other people have been abused or killed by police before her. I can care for all at the same time and I do. It's not acceptable in any case.
Dementia is an awful disease. How confused and frightened Karen must have been. Not to mention the pain she would have had, this was a hard video to watch. Kudos to Dr Grande for speaking out for her.
And now she walks around with trauma and no meaningful way to process it.
