Bolt in Dana 60 Jeep Axle Upgrade - Fusion Semi Float 60 FULL Install and Test Drive

    This time on the AutoEdits Jeep Wrangler Rubicon build up project... I install an awesome Fusion Semi-Float 60 rear axle assembly for the Jeep JKU.
    I have been doing so much research trying to find the best upgrade option for this project and this is it. Bolt in Dana 60 strength with the semi-float axle flanges that enable me to run my stock JKU style brakes and keep my Vision 5 lug wheels that I love.
    The only part that really has to change to complete the upgrade is to get a correct driveshaft. In this video I'll even show you how to set the pinion angle and measure for that. I always use Tom Wood's Custom Driveshafts and ordered one up!

    Fusion 4x4 would be my first choice of aftermarket crate axles. They're really the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

    Hit that primer with some Seymour hi tech semi gloss or mro gloss enamel and it will last even longer. They make great hi quality paint products

    What I’ve learned so far.. especially watching these vids. Run the stock axles until you have an issue. Then upgrade to full float rear, and a kingpin type D60 front.

      Nah, the whole point of this is to build what I need and not incur all the added expenses of wheels, brakes / brake booster etc. Plus... I like the steering feel I have better than the kingpin I installed in my buddy's jeep.

    Jason, Great video!!! I just installed the 44/60 hybrid and Semi-float 60 package in my 09' JKU last month. Love them! Watched this video after your PSC video just to see how you liked the Fusion products. I also wheel with the "Gotta drive it home mentality", and these axles give me the confidence that I will be able to do just that. Can't wait to get my PSC kit and get it installed! I can't help but second guess my choice on the front... the 44/60 hybrid looks so good but the Elite does cover what I need and from the moment I ordered, showed up in less than a week and a half 👌

      I am looking at the 44/60 Hybrid,and Semi-Float 60 also. Did you have to get custom length drive lines? How do you like the axles so far? What tire size are you running?

      @@TheRambler-pz1gx The short answer on the drive shafts is yes. The larger 60 center sections change the drive shaft lengths. Just make sure you know what you want for lift height so you don't have to get them twice. I currently run 32's but I am going to 37's, I chose to upgrade the axles and gearing first. So far I love the Fusion axles! Great peace of mind when I am wheeling that they can take a hit should I mis calculate my line... Hope this helps.

    Hey Jeepin’ Jason. I like your videos and your commentary. If you had a really sick JKU. This is a nice semi float. Set up that you have going on. I’m anxious to see how it works for you. I especially like that this is welded, as you had stated for extra reinforcement. Sweet axles that don’t break the bank as much. I am running a JLURD Teraflex everything, and an RT3 Suspension System 3.5 a-adapt shocks and Mickey Thompson, Baja Boss AT. would have went to the lock and load system if they had it for the JLU. Keep it up!

      I hear ya. I've had the Jeep so many years now that after I finished making payments... I kept "making payments" to a special savings that helped with planning for many of the modifications. And then I also drive an $800 Tahoe which helps save a bit LOL The Jeep is my only really expensive hobby at the moment.

    Years ago when I was still working I talked to a couple of well regarded axle manufactures about welding the tubes on the 12bolt for my Camaro. Both advised against it because it is extremely hard to keep the tubes straight if you weld them. I did weld the tubes on an 8.8 once, but I had already ripped the tubes out of them. The larger diameter tubes and a tighter pressfit will give you what you want without welding.

      I knew I could count on you for some in-depth engineering analysis. I still feel WAY better having the tubes welded, whether it matters or not (mechanically). This particular axle was perfectly square to my measurements so they figured that part out for sure. My real question to you is, when can I come down and have a visit and bring you those fancy upper control arms from the Ram I've been saving all these years?

    Beautiful Jeep bro. Great video, just found your channel. I have an 89 YJ I’m getting going and will I’m sure break the 35\30 on it now at some point. I can’t see spending on this axle what I paid for Jeep (😮) but it does save a bunch of hassle. Subbed.

      Thanks for the sub! Yeah, I've seen people say they are going to "save a bunch" by getting junkyard or used axles and doing the work to make them fit (including rebuilding/ regearing, etc.) and then ending up very close to what a completely custom Fusion axle would cost and they are out the months of labor! So, it's whatever fits the build plan! I only have a 110 welder and am not setup to do axle brackets and such.

    you can tap into the harness on the passenger side pull the fuse panel up find the purple and green wire and purple and blue wire put a switch attached to ground to each wire boom you can controll your rubicon lockers in 2wd 4whigh or 4low and they wont disengage until you want them to

    I’ve been following your build for a short while now. Bought my jeep used almost a year ago 6 speed as well. Your attention to detail makes your reviews of you build the best by far. My jeep is also my daily which bring my question of how your gearing does on the engine at highway speeds? What are your rpm’s at?

    the OEM E brake was designed by mornon's, hard to adjust show clearance and the spring loaded pull handle doesnt work well

    Did you have the same problem with your front Ultimate Dana 44 you installed it. Did you do the same workaround with it? Just change my front axle on my 2015 hard rock Rubicon, and regret making the switch to the Ultimate Dana 44. Now you have given me hope to fix the dash light problem. Thanks your workaround, and the adjusting the parking break.

      Sure, metalcloak.com/jk-wrangler-duroflex-control-arms-full-set.html
      But at the stock height, the the original control arms are pretty reliable. If you are replacing them because they are tired or worn out... sure go big with the adjustable arms but otherwise, keep wheeling with the stock stuff until lift and bigger tires.

    Hi Jason great video, I noticed the front 44 isn't full wrapped, is it just the rears are or cause rear is a 60?

      Do you mean the welding on the tubes? It's an option on the front I forgot to ask for but it is less likely to twist those since the front doesn't get as much traction as the rear.

      @@AutoEdits yes welding the axle tubes to the diff housing, common practice on big trucks when "turning" the axle to reduce pinion angle vs. having to run a blue tooth front drive shaft... (j/k). I had my guy do it to my JK 44's when he added my trusses. I just got Dynatrac XD60's for my Jeep but I've heard good things about the Advanced Driveline and Fusion Axles. My friend runs them on his AMW 6.4 swapped JL and loves them.

      @@AutoEdits I was wanting to only use factory Rubicon eLocker switch on the dash. I have 2 wires coming out of the Fusion differential housing. I am having trouble on the internet how to wire up the Spicer 10056733 harness.

      LIke I show in this video, connect the two wires from the jeep actuator lead to the end of the spicer harness and the two wires from the jeep sensor lead to the relay in the middle of the spicer harness. And then connect to the eaton e locker pigtail on the fusion housing. Hope that helps @@jeffb1375

    Does fusion add a larger carrier bearing? I was cautioned when building my 60 that a 40 splined 60 shaft leaves very little material between the lines in the carrier and the bearing race. that’s why I have 35 spline chromo shafts
    With a 9 inch in the F 100 I was able to swap the bearings and carrier (and third) for a large bearing to make room for that higher splined shafts.

      Great question... and one I'm not afraid to ask of the dude that was helping me with my order over at Fusion. I literally spent an hour of that poor guys time asking questions but leave it to you... a question I didn't even know to ask. I was put at ease when he mentioned that some off the new Spicer Advantek axles were running 40 spline with the SET80 bearings and making it work with OEM level reliability... Fusion is running a similar setup just with a MUCH stronger housing and 3.5" axle tubes with .5" wall thickness. So when is dinner?

      @@AutoEdits set 80 I believe refers to the outer bearing on a sf housing. (Set 10 and set 20 are common axle bearings).

      That's easy... for me... cargo space was important and since most of my adventures involve long highway drives... the added wheelbase makes this thing so comfortable to cover long distances. So purely a practical matter. I prefer the looks of the 2 door but need to use my rig for more than a recreational vehicle.

    Hey, it looks like you installed your shocks backwards - the red side should be facing out, at least that's how my 6pack shocks were suppose to be installed. I looked at your other videos and they are facing red side out. Is this something you did for this axle? Why the change?

      Why yes, I loved to talk about that! I've been putting on hundreds of city and freeway miles this week since the install for work and it's flat out amazing to drive! So smooth and extremely stable... even on the rough freeways here in Los Angeles. So I'm absolutely thrilled and I haven't even put in the dirt yet. The confidence boost has been incredible.

      @@jamesbond862 Better. Look at the track bar mount on the pr44 ... if you have any lift at all that will cause bump steer. Plus the Fusion has the caster corrected housing and stronger tubes. I did hours of comparing online and talking to people who wheel hard.

    I have driven on a broken semi float rear axle for about a mile to get to the trailer. And I have heard of people driving their rigs home on the street with one. But I don’t recommend it.

      It would only wear if it is engaged while driving. Check that it is not releasing all the way or if it was adjusted wrong.

    I'm installing my axle right now and when fitting the springs onto the lower perches, its much different than OEM. I understand the springs sit on the perch and are retained with the bolt and "washer" plate provided but they seem really loose. My stock axle had an exact spot that was notched out and the spring fit snugly into position. Looks like you possibly used different hardware? In the beginning of the video it shows the same back and silver hardware I have but towards the end it looks like you have gold hardware installed. Appreciate any assistance!

      I used my MetalCloak spring retainers but the one's I have are the angle correction ones and they add almost an inch of lift I don't want... you can probably just use the retainers metalcloak.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=+Spring+angle+correction+retainer
      Check the droop on your axle with the shocks in...you may not need much to keep the springs in place. Since I mounted my lower shock attachment so far up... this axle droops way down and the springs actually get loose. If you are using the normal shock mount... it will probably keep the springs pretty secure at full droop.

      @@AutoEdits That's what I'll do I just dont like that the diameter of my springs are so much larger than the male side of the perch that it sits on. I always thought the springs had a correct "position" they needed to be oriented in.

    Sorry Jason, LIES LIES LIES (Lol..) , view my two little videos on my channel and look at how clean my JLUR is before, then dirty, then return to like it was at the start of my AOP video. It's not that easy to keep it clean.... Lol!!! your so humble. I know you spend ALOT of time under that jeep brother. I get asked the same question by folks who think mine is a Mall crawler until they look closely at the scratches and chips in my rims or one of my video's. Like you I do touch paint if needed but since my jeep is newer that's only been like 2 times in the past 2 years. That said, I think it's important for folks to know that prepping before the trip is important but also not using a pressure washer unless it's a small psi one meaning no more than 1200 psi or so. Too easy to push grit into areas it doesn't need to go into. Also it's so important to prevent pushing grit and grime into any electrical connections especially with our CAN-Bus electrical systems. I wish I had the life of wheeling all the time, but since I'm like 98% of the population and use my jeep as a daily driver and only wheel 10 to 15 times a year then it makes it easy to spend multiple days manually cleaning everything under the jeep. The biggest thing that I do before a trip is clean, clean, clean, wax, tire shine, and shine the frame, axles, and everything else. It makes it 100% easier to simply wash away with a regular garden hose. It also makes it easy to simply hand wash once I'm done with the hose. Once again as I've stated before, you have a great channel and although I'm doing my channel for fun, you were one of the folks who inspired me to just start something. Thanks for that, and thanks for the heads up on the fusion axles as I first found them on your channel. My JL now has the Ultimate 44 on the front which was free, but I would have bought the fusion 44. I'm currently looking at the 60 for the rear of my JLU and like you just sticking with my current tires (38's) instead of 40's but since these Advantek M220 axles have a good reputation on the JL's I'm stuck deciding if I should do it now or wait.

    Did you use your switch pod to run the lockers? Or the factory switches? I am wondering if you used the switch pod and where able to make the factory rubicon dash lockers light turn on. I have been told only way to have the dash lights work you need to use the factory switches which I do not want to as I want the lockers when I want them to work not when the computer allows.

      Im a big fan of MC.... I run their full fender and skins on my JK..... 1st trip their body mount sliders folded all the way up to the tub on the Rubicon trail... Nothing crazy, I don't beat on my rig and definitely nothing that should have remotely folded them all the way up to the body.. The even worse part of their sliders is the inner have metal tabs that punched right through the tub... Dont bother if you wheel your rig. I pulled em, repaired my tub and went with another brand frame mount.

      @@AutoEdits If you're keeping them, I'd highly suggest getting the lower armor for the panels. They will flex and watch those reinforcement tabs on inside of the rails, because they punch through the body like a knife.

      @@mackjacobs5489 What flanges? The lower control arm mount flanges bent all the time but the wheel ends didn't. The axle housing strength and differential is the biggest reason for this upgrade. I've been extremely happy so far.

    What was your stock gear ratio? When you step up your gear ratio does that raise your towing capacity?

      Stock was 4.10 and gear ration doesn't change tow capacity. It just helps the engine get better leverage for a given load or tire size. Guys that tow camping trailers on the same size tire would go one step farther from 4.88 to 5.13 for that. But springs, chassis, brakes all play a part in towing capacity.

      I say in the video. No need to buy new brakes, wheels and have to make a custom width housing to match the front. 40 spline semi float is plenty strong for 37-38” tires.
