Doctors work really hard. Very hard. They have to get paid. I don't even thing they have time for fun, but it is good, if everyone worked like doctors the country would be far.
Working as a doctor in this country is so challenging the pay is good and some don’t mind overtime but the conditions are horrible and room for growth and specialising is so limited . The working conditions actually put you in danger in terms of losing your license due to malpractice cases

The shifts are indeed ridiculous for the most part. But let’s be honest , it is not for All doctors . Some of them do calls from home , like radiologists . Also , Consultants even for some of the busiest disciplines have it easier than the ones below them in rank.
The department of health clearly does not employ the smartest of people to run the department. Overtime is more costly than normal time, so why not employ more doctors to reduce the overall people cost? This will also reduce fatigue and the related errors which contribute to poor health care and even premature deaths in our country 😢
Overtime is roughly about 30k for the month ,employing another doctor to work those same hours would mean paying around 60-70k to that doctor,so it's essentially cheaper to overwork doctors rather than employ new ones cause they need to make the basic pay that other doctors make...(working laws )

Normal time is just time. If it were so much cheaper to higher less workers and pay more overtime, instead of more employees and less overtime then that is what the private sector would mostly do. Overtime is meant to fix a short term man power issue and not be the norm.
I’m not saying they should eliminate overtime, but if on average every doctor is working +/- R30k/month worth of it, yet there are plenty of unemployed doctors then there is something wrong with the system.

It’s actually “commuted overtime” almost all medical doctors do overtime,one has to to even justify if they would like to opt out.its done so to prevent shortages of doctors at night or over the weekends.they sign that mini contract annually. And overtime is almost 50% of their salary!
Fixed overtime here refers to after knock off time 4pm. Its when they are on call. I doubt it would be practical to hire doctor's that work only at night as their basic. Those who opt out of doing calls which is very rare don't get the fixed overtime. It referred to as fixed overtime coz its a fixed number of hours every month.

Look at the Mental health. Most do the overtime and work in rural areas simply because they cannot afford a middle class life. I mean those who avoid debt. I am shocked to see how comparatively little doctors earn. Most finance graduates with honours or Masters earn more than this without overtime. We work 8-10 hr days but if you have more than 5 years experience you earn more than doctors
I spend 12 hrs at my home & Kids! enjoying every moment of life at the same time have time for God everyday without worries! money its useless when u spend half of your life chasing money! I don't say we don't need Doctors. We appreciate them.
Our government is really failing to plan for the future because all doctors are Registered. The database is available on annual basis of which it can help to plan for the future
This DOH is something else. When you contact one of them to ask in advance about placement just so you prepare yourself and know what to expect, they’ll discourage about applying outside of the state but yet tell you that there's no guarantee for placement as a bursary holder but youll need to give them at least three months before you start applying for private posts cause should they contact you for an offer and you cant take it then you should pay the bursary money back 🙄. So now what must people do, sit at home and wait for an unreliable government and when finally posts are vacant corrupt individuals are placed they decide to put ghost employees so they can put money back in their pockets. Yoh these people are wicked.

@@liferesetwithboni depends on which field you go into when you start working. We have CRA, Medical Writing, programming, and data management, and epidemiology. I never struggled getting a job because I always volunteered at school. You just have to do some volunteering jobs while studying so that you can use that as your experience or exposure.

Not to be the devils advocate abt unemployed doctors. But govt is highly in debt and will need a lot more debt to keep running, while we still have a lack of electricity, lack of schools, lack of infrastructure in EC, and so on & so on. So the govt can’t just go all in on one thing, the little money thats there has to be shared

I always tell them and my self that anything is possible if you put your mind in it. Even if you don't qualify for ur coarse of choice go and repeat gr 12 if you can so that you can qualify, most do not listen. You have proven that it's possible to obtain a qualification and be not happy about ur work. With ur comment you just saved someone's future, there's someone right now who's not certain about his/her coarse but was thinking to insists and pursue it anyway.
