When we travelled to CR in 2022 we had lots of these older bills without the "window" in it. Especially fruit sellers on streets didn't want to be paid with these bills. Was really hard to get rid of the old bills! Make sure you start your journey with new money and, yes, refuse to take these!
Great video Ed! You look like you lost weight! The colones to USD seems easy enough. When I was there in college for week (spring break week 2001) I remember being very confused by the money conversion! All the locals flock to the beaches during Semana Santa.
I’m coming down in Aug /24 from Canada and it’s not good with our dollar sinking almost daily . I will exchange my money here and will then use debit card for cash. Thanks for the education on currency. I will be in Tambor beach then after that up in your area and I will check you out.
I was one who had confusion at first, but it's quite easy when you just double the number of the bill by a factor of 2. 5 mil = 10USD, 20mil = 40 USD, etc.
I call 'la moneda' or the coins of Costa Rica'Monopoly money' because you can have 5 pounds in your pocket and collectively it's worth a $1.49 USD .... Buen trabajo, hermano!
Saludos.🇨🇷🕊🇺🇸
One more piece of advice, Ed. If you have two people in the car while you're on the pay highway (la carretera) this is the perfect time to take all those useless coins and drive the toll takers crazy. I make it my mission to get rid of all silver coins and rid ourselves of the majority of our plastic bag of Monopoly money.
Most tourist areas have no problem taking US dollars. That being said, you may not get a great exchange rate that way. What i do is use my Charles schwab investor checking account(no I don’t have any investments😅) that gives you an international fee free debit card that will give you a good rate of exchange at the atms . Then you can get colones. If you do use us dollars make sure they are in good condition, here they wont accept dollars with tears or other slight physical damage. You can also use a credit card in some places, but check to make sure the card does not charge atm fees or international fees
It is probably best to have Costa Rican money in small denominations for the buses. Sometimes you pay at the bus station, but on some routes where you get on at a bus stop you have to pay the driver, so having small denominations in colones is best.
cant believe the dollar has dropped that low but the canadian dollar is very high..i did hear talk when i was there that the c.r.govt might peg it at 650 colones to the dollar..it would stabilize their economy..because those farmers and shipping companies are taking a beating transporting goods...

Great advice Dirk, it can be a huge pain to try to get rid of them at this point.
I love the content and subtitles
Gracias Mark😁👍

Thanks Carly, yes these at this current rate it is pretty simple conversion, but you can always count on the rate changing , for better or worse.

Yes, I have friends from Canada living here on a fixed income and the exchange rate has definitely gone in the wrong direction.

Yes, that pretty much puts you in the ballpark at the current rates

I am visiting next year. A solo female American. Total new experience to make such a trip. Can I use u.s. money while making use of bus transport?

Yeah, USD value has dropped like a stone here. I guess only time will tell the future.
BNC will exchange old bills for new ones. You just need to wait in line to see a teller
Thanks for the tip Urban outdoorsman👍
