  • Mulan Hong Quan* Shuang Dao Dui Qiang
Double Saber vs Spear paired form demonstrated by 5th generation inheritor Lin Changyou.
This style of Hong Quan is practiced in Yucheng county, Shangqiu prefecture, Henan province.
Mulan Hong Quan can be traced back to Guo Wenwu, who in the reign of emperor Guangxu (1871-1908) is said to have taught this style as a "Martial Monk" in the Mulan Ci (Mulan ancestral temple**) in then Yingguo town (recently rename "Mulan town").
Guo Wenwu is said to have loved martial arts from childhood and to have always been looking for teachers to learn new skills from.
The methods of Hong Quan passed down by him became known as Mulan Hong Quan due to their associations with the Mulan temple.
Mulan Hong Quan contains a number of boxing forms including Eight Diagram Boxing, Upper and Lower Four Roads, and Upper and Lower Six Roads forms, Sticky Body Strike, Assorted Hammers, etc. as well as various type of Nei Gong / Qi Gong / Gang Fa / Ground fighting skills, etc.
A number of single and paired weapon forms are taught in this style. These include Staff, Saber, Spear, Sickles, Walking Cane, several types of Sectional Staffs, Sectional Whips, Rope Darts and Single and double headed Meteor Hammers.
*Please note that this is a traditional folk art and is not the same as modern Mulan Quan aka Mulan Hua Quan which is a modern excercise system created from a combination of postures from Taiji, Hua Quan, and postures taken from depictions of women's dances in ancient Chinese art.
**Yingguo town in Yucheng county (today Mulan town)is considered to be the home of the legendary Hua Mulan. While Hua Mulan is generally considered to have been a fictional character, her story is over 1500 years old and very famous in China. As a result most people in the area have traditionally believed the story to be real and a temple was created in her honor which over a number of dynasties received official patronage and reached quite a large size. A shrine to Hua Mulan has existed on that spot since at least the Tang dynasty. Almost every major dynasty has rebuilt the temple or added on additions and every spring on the birthday of Hua Mulan local officials would lead a procession to make ceremonial offerings at the shrine.
