My number one 80s song! The 80s had so many epic gems but this one for me captures all the sounds and the vibe of the 80s. Never fails to take me back to my childhood and what life felt like back then.
By 1983 a digital music communication standard called MIDI was developed by Dave Smith. It became the de-facto standard for synthesizers, digital mixers, and later for composing music on computer systems. Macintosh, Amiga, and ST-Atari computers started to use MIDI as a way to create and produce digital music. That is one of the main reasons you see so much creativity in the 80s. If you had an idea in your head you could produce it as music with low cost tools. You didn't even have to have skill at writing music - the software would help you do it.
Another Johnny Hates Jazz song is "Turn Back the Clock." Also Level 42 "Something About You," The Church "Under the Milky Way," and maybe The Railway Children "In the Meantime" for some of the mellower 80s new wave. Your channel could last a decade just reacting to great 80s new wave songs.
Mike + the Mechanics - All I Need Is a Miracle Genesis - Land of Confusion, Misunderstanding, In Too Deep Phil Collins - One More Night Styx - Snowblind
This band didn't have a long career which got me thinking about other 80s bands who had great one hit wonders (or almost). Fiction Factory had a song Feels Like Heaven that would love to see your thoughts on but Level 42 a good shout too. And hey, aint it time for some more Stevie Nicks, so how about her very 80s offerring "I can't wait"?
Decent song, if you lived in this era it got a LOT of radio play which caused a bit of the "Landslide" effect for me if you know what I mean. Agree with other comments, "Something About You" by Level 42 is worth a listen. One of my favorite 80's tracks is "Love Of The Common People" by Paul Young.
Jay and Amber, if you like this song by Johnny Hates Jazz then you'll REALLY like " Turn Back the clock " which is off the same Johnny Hates Jazz cd as ' Shattered Dreams '🎵
Synths came first. Hair bands were mid-to-late 80s. Duran Duran came on the scene in 1981, and they're synth heavy ... as was New Wave in general. The New Wave invasion started in the early 80s. ETA: I turned 13 in 1980, so I spent all my teen years and early 20s in the 80s. I agree that the 80s were unique, colorful and cool!
Van Halen debuted in 1978! I would say that New Wave and 80's metal both came about at around the same time, but New Wave peaked in popularity around 1981-1985, whereas 80's style metal/hard rock was more like 1986-1991.
Here's some 1980s songs: Al Jarreau - Mornin' / Johnny Mathis - Love Never Felt So Good / Basia - New Day For You / Michael Franks - When Sly Calls (Don't Touch That Phone) / George Benson & Aretha Franklin - Love All The Hurt Away / Swing Out Sister - Waiting Game / Sade - Is It A Crime / King - Love And Pride / Surface - Happy / Blow Monkeys - Digging Your Scene / Everything But The Girl - Driving / Deniece Williams - Black Butterfly / Stevie Wonder - Overjoyed / Atlantic Starr - When Love Calls / Jeffrey Osborne - Don't You Get So Mad
You're right! People forget him. He brought a lot to music too. I hadn't thought about him either. Slick Rick comes to mind, "Children's Story". Remember Oran Juice Jones? I saw you and him walking in the rain..? Just came to mind.
IMO 80s had the best instrumentation, song structure, melodies and vibes. "Turn back the clock" and "I don't want to be a hero" are another great tunes by Johnny Hates Jazz.
Thanks for J & A for the 80’s UK love (that made its way across the pond). Not surprising that you two enjoyed “Shattered Dreams” bc even after its late 80’s release, you still heard it on the radio, in the mall, in the grocery store, at the doctor’s office, etc years later. ✌🏽
Thank you Rob Squad for re-introducing us 80's kids to songs we sometimes forget about. Of course I've heard this song off and on through the decades. But hearing it again putting the band name and video to it is awesome! So glad I was an 80's kid!!!--so much great music, that I forget about some of them.
Great choice! This was one of my favourite songs from the 80s. JHJ were not around for long, sadly, but they made a good contribution to the 80s soundtrack.
Johnny Hates Jazz also had another, lesser known hit title "I Don't Want To Be A Hero" (an anti-war song). Would love to see y'all do a reaction vid to that one day. :D
I was never a fan of this song but I can appreciate the great musicianship. As others have suggested, LEVEL 42 is a band you really need to hear. Something About You is awesome with a WICKED baseline. Leaving Me Now is also a fav from them but slower.
I believe Johnny Hates Jazz was a one hit wonder, but if you liked it then you'll love The Promise by When In Rome. It's in the same lane, but it's more poppy and upbeat. Also another similar group that takes it in that blue eyed soul direction Amber was talking about is Breathe, and the song you should start with is Hands To Heaven.
You would be wrong. I Don't Want To Be A Hero was a Top 40 hit for them also. While other JHJ songs didn't break the Top 40, they did receive significant airplay in the US and worldwide.
@@cullmaster7361 My comment comes as US resident. The typical definition of a one hit wonder is a group that has only one top 40 single. While JHJ had several top 40 hits in the UK, they only had 2 in the US : Shattered Dreams #2 and I Don't Want To Be A Hero #31. So technically they wouldn't be a one hit wonder although there is a big gap between those 2 songs. I believe the group of people who know Shattered Dreams and no other JHJ songs is larger than the group who know multiple songs by them. Calling them a one hit wonder is not me downplaying their music. I'm sure they have lots of good songs that for whatever reason never did as well as Shattered Dreams. I'm a huge Prince fan, and most of my favorite songs by him are not the hits that everyone knows. It sounds like they liked the song so, I'm sure they'll react to JHJ again and maybe I'll find some more songs from them I like.
Try this great 80s song, for all humanity * JOHNNY CLEGG & JULUKA - Scatterlings of Africa!!! A cultural wonder crossing all races/colors - MUST SEE! Amazing South African musician, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist and activist.
I was curious as to which video you would play. This is the original UK version that I discovered on RUclips years later. There was also a separate video for the US.

I would give anything to relive those years where music was a very important part of our days.
My TEENS!❤❤
I wouldn't trade my teen years during the 80's for nothing! I couldn't have asked for a better time period of music!
Cool tune..you can get similar vibe by listening to
"How can I fall",by ..Breathe
Also Hands to Heaven by Breathe!
Here’s one I don’t think anyone hasn’t reacted to, Canadian singer Gino Vannelli songs: “Black Cars”, (1985), “Living Inside Myself” (1981), “Wild Horses” (1987)
Haven't heard this since the early 90s, ❤❤❤
Also add:
1. "The Blues" by Tony!Toni!Tone'! (Said as Tony, Tony, Tony)
That just made me think of Tone Loc.
Frankie goes to Hollywood were a massive band in the UK IN THE 1980s and "Relax" was probably there biggest hit
Oh wow! i had forgotten about these guys!
I was never a fan of this song but I can appreciate the great musicianship. As others have suggested, LEVEL 42 is a band you really need to hear. Something About You is awesome with a WICKED baseline. Leaving Me Now is also a fav from them but slower.
Please do Turn Back the Clock Johnny Hates Jazz also you’ll love it ❤
I believe Johnny Hates Jazz was a one hit wonder, but if you liked it then you'll love The Promise by When In Rome. It's in the same lane, but it's more poppy and upbeat. Also another similar group that takes it in that blue eyed soul direction Amber was talking about is Breathe, and the song you should start with is Hands To Heaven.
I love Hands to Heaven, such a beautiful song. The Promise is late 80's magic, too.
You would be wrong. I Don't Want To Be A Hero was a Top 40 hit for them also. While other JHJ songs didn't break the Top 40, they did receive significant airplay in the US and worldwide.
If I could turn back the clock was another hit by them, maybe not in the US, though.
1 hit wonder!? Really!? Other hits, “turn back the clock”, “heart of gold”, “I don’t want to be a hero”… please! 🙄😉
One of my favorite songs from 80's
Oh I loved this SO MUCH as a kid. They had a string of really good pop hits
I don't know why so many of the famous RUclips reactors have stayed away from this song for so long. It's one of my favorite songs from the '80s.
Mine too!
Because the Patreon members get more say on what they react to than anyone else. They should change the name from Patreon to Payola.
"turn back the clock" is also one of my gems
Try this great 80s song, for all humanity * JOHNNY CLEGG & JULUKA - Scatterlings of Africa!!! A cultural wonder crossing all races/colors - MUST SEE! Amazing South African musician, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist and activist.
Double down on Scatterlings of Africa great call out for world music and Johnny Clegg ❤
A+ video!
Another classic!
I was curious as to which video you would play. This is the original UK version that I discovered on RUclips years later. There was also a separate video for the US.
excelente vídeo, excelente canal,um grande abraço do Brasil ❤
They need to listen to the group Breathe and their songs "How Can I Fall" and "Hands to Heaven"!!!!
Breathe is another band you’ll like “Hands To Heaven!!
