This song reminds me of my Dad. The first time I heard it, we were riding together, he says “oh, great song!” and turned it up. Now every time I hear it come on the radio, that’s what I do, turn it up. Miss you Dad 💜
Amazing how a song or melody will impact us for the rest of our time here!!! I like your little reflection, it's simplicity but impact. Nice.
With you Tony. So many feels to this tune.
OH Tony!! I remember playing this album for my dad, too...he always loved when I turned him onto music. He did the same! I miss him so much. thanks for sharing! Michael
Me too...my dad had the album and I think instantly of my dad when I hear it.
It reminds me of my grandparents and yes my grandfather that I called " Dad" cuz I called my father Daddy ...always. Miss them both, but it reminds me of being at my grandparents house on school vacations.
My Dad passed in 1999. We used to listen to this song and drive on the highway together. It fills me with hope and reminds me of him. I love this song.
It's good how just the one song or a certain aroma or the smell from a room in a house can bring back old memories ! It would be good to go back in time , not to change anything but just to relive some of those memories ! 😂
@@peterlittle123 yeah that would be cool.
Hey Peter, I could not say it better ! I 've got the same with this masterpiece. Wish I had a Time machine 😢. Greetz from Holland 🇳🇱@@peterlittle123
He saw a chance. Met Valerie. Found higher love. And is back in the high life again.
Excellent!!
Now he's rolling with it baby.
Well done kurtis
If I'm not mistaken, you did that all within the same album. Well done!
i bet you worked all day n night for that one!!!
My body says Im 60 but my heart & mind says 21... I'll go by my heart...I want my 80's !!!!!
You and me both
How the endless road unwinds you...great song..
Me too!!!! The 80 s were great !
Love your comment
Roger that. My mind says I am young, my music makes me feel it too.
Being a teenager in a severely abusive household, listening to this song under the covers in the ghetto of Miami 1986. Memorizing each lyric as if it were a blueprint of escape.
It is a blueprint of escape
I will keep you in my prayers! Join a church with a youth pastor where they actually praise the word of God and the truth. Also, listen to worship songs and lay your burden unto Him. He does listen. He is a compassionate Father 🙏🙏🙏
Indeed! Yes, He is!@@light6508

ha - wow… Can relate to a degree … via con dios amigo.
The keyboard overture gets me every time. It evokes so much emotions of memories of youth. How I even got to this age in life, I'll never know. I miss all the friends and loved ones that have gone before me. Songs like this are my last link to the past.
Awesome observations. We must have all been watching MTV waiting for gems like this to come on!
Now we can sit back and watch as Stranger Things show all our kids what real music was🎯
Yeah me too.
I hear ya. Peace.
Yep music can do that. 60s, 70s and the 80s were the best in music. Can't believe we've hit rock bottom with our "music" in the 2***. The garbage the artist's make today lacks love and soul
So beautifully articulated sir. Thanks for that. It gets me too! I think back to being a kid working my first job in 1986 and all the feelings that accompanied that time, mostly hope. Song uplifted me then and still does.
That's me in that video... the one in the black spandex. I remember hearing my dad tell the crew, "That's my son right there!"... he then blurted out a loud "I LOVE YOU SON... I'M PROUD OF YOU!!!" LOL
Cool!
Amazing!
How very cool! I LOVE this song. It was my song that I listened to when I was about to make a big change in my life. Like moving or taking a new job….
Steve Winwood is one classy, super-talented, musical genius.
MJS376 No doubt. Simply masterpiece
this statement is correct.
Couldn't say it better myself ☺️
True, but the fact is the string of hits he had starting with this in 1981 through the mid 80's weren't written by him, I can't remember his name but there was a guy who wrote all those hits for him through that era.
Will Jennings, & no he CO-wrote them WITH Steve
Steve Winwood's voice, music and his style is wonderful.
One of the best musicians in the world...completely underrated...
So overlooked and undervalued! His music spoke life love and truths. Bless you for recognizing 🙏🏽🕊️🫡
um ok in no way form or fashion is steve winwood underrated by anyone anywhere... the only thing underrated is your level of stupidity you are both idiots!!!!
that is the dumbest statement anyone has ever said if i was him id be offended by your stupidity.....that is no where near true on any planet!!!!
From the age of 6 😅😊❤!
Steve Winwood talked about how some people said he sold out in the 80's, but when I listen to this I hear it as being as soulful as any Traffic tune..... it has all the elements that made them legendary. Great song.
I think he settled into his own with songs like this.
@@geetarman AC DC rules. Watch Angus on Thunderstruck. One hand intro.
❤
He didn’t sell out, he grew up.
I don’t think he sold out. His music is some of the most memorable songs of the 80’s.
I was at a lecture/presentation on Steve Winwood's work by a musicologist which was very good and during the Q & A a supposed expert in the audience referred sarcastically to the 80's as Winwood's "lounge singer" period. Forget the weird video and the stuffy clothes, the songs he wrote in the 80's were incredible - so good!. True they were a little more "pop hits" style than the classic improvisational Traffic work of the 60's and 70's - but you can be sure that all the elite talents from the 60's and 70's would have killed to be able to write and perform music as successful as Winwood did in the 80's. There's nothing wrong with commercial success, man! There are trashy, throwaway pop hits and there are classic pop hits and he turned out one great pop song after another in the 80's. Give him a ton of credit for his versatility and genius.
Amen to this all!
From what I remember Steve Winwood was all but wrapped up at this point. By his own admission he was going out with this album-all or nothing. He did all the instruments. Write, composed everything on Arc. The things kids held Kenny Kravitz or Prince up for being a genius 10 years later Here Steve Winwood shared stages and studios with legends and pioneered a lot of this type of music.
You watch, Stranger Things will get to this song and it'll be the next Running Up That Hill that turns a whole new generation on to this Genius.
Great memories of this song.
Love it!
This song could be a Traffic tune!! .....just remove the 80's synth and there it is. Great song.
You've been bamboozled. "lounge singer period" is quite apt.
sounds like the “expert” is envious of steve’s talent and success. these songs stand the test of time and then some!!!
@@terryhancockroc6560 yeah, but, no need to take a swipe at Prince here (Kravitz ehhh) you didn’t have to be a kid to recognize that Prince was worthy of the genius label. Try finding anyone in the biz who will dispute it.
This is one of those rare songs...when you hear the closing chords...you silently grieve that the song will soon be over.
What a cool comment. I 100% agree. good on you!

Remember the 1980's when everything seemed bright, shiny and new? Yeah, I remember that too...
Never thought those dystopian 80s movies were actually on to something.
I was pretty young. 2 in 1980 and 11 in 1989. I wish I could redo life.
You are exactly right.... everything was in front of not only the young in school who heard this on the radio but the world in general. Too many things to list...... I'm 55 and we truly were blessed to have lived in that time period as young people growing up
Melhor década pra música eternamente.
Everything was shinier in the 80s. Compared to today. Sheesh.
I was 14 and woke up “in a clear blue morning” in park city Utah the sun was refracting off the snow but the sky was the most extreme blue I’ve ever seen. It was magical, this song takes me back to that morning. Thank you Steve for making the music of my life.

I agree with you Stacy but that sentiment isn't exclusive to this song, I get that same feeling with many of his other hits...
Same. It reminds me of walking around the house early in the morning getting ready for school in the early 80s.

One of Winwood's underrated talents: the ability to sing passionately with weird crap going on behind him.
you couldn't make a sandwich.
I know a guy who had High School Shop class with Steve Winwood. He said they were both making guitars. He never finished his, but Steve finished his. He said 'doesn't that tell a story'

This song helped me make one of the biggest decisions in my life. And, it paid off. Thanks you Steve Winwood.
Glad you got the ' cat '.😅
June 1981. I brought this record during a weekend at the seaside with friends. We never stopped listening to this incredible song. Two days after , I had my written exams for my two degrees, in Law and Political sciences. It went well but , coming back to my parents' home after the session , I had a very serious car accident which left me with my two legs broken. I thought afterwards that I was lucky because I was a survivor ! I spent 3 weeks in a wheelchair and , thereafter, one month and a half with a plaster on the left leg. I spent all summer long in re-education and working the .... 12 topics I had to take for my oral exams, end of September. And I made it ! Guess what ? When I was lacking energy , I was listening to this fabulous song . I was then telling to myself : " Man , while you see a chance take it !". Thanks Stevie, you will always stay in my heart !
Nice story! I am glad everything went well, after all.
Awesome story. Thank you for sharing.
Success in life is just the realization how good we have it.
While you see a chance? Oh geez. We always have that choice
beautiful story, here in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil there is a radio station that has always played great bands including Stive with this wonderful song. I love
It's honestly cool and impressive that a Rock singer from the 60s went completely synthpop in the 80s. Most artists, like Rolling Stones and Who, maintained some level of their sound, but him, Peter Gabriel, they just completely 180d and they're all the cooler for it.
I would add the Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship to groups that started in the 60s and continued thru to the 80s.
He's only 32 years old here but already a veteran of the 60's and 70's music scene.
Ages as u showed always amaze me on some of these. Other day I learned Olivia Newton John was 30 during Grease and 33 when Physical came out. I was blown away

I love the positivity of this song. Life is all about timing and taking chances.
IMO the one overriding characteristic of most 1980's pop/rock is its unbounded sense of positivity & optimism. We were happy & we did not know it.
@@armandocardona4478 We are happy now and don't know it. Happiness is relative. Human nature doesn't change over time, only technology. Here's one of my own about searching for happiness: ruclips.net/video/VeP2dardrFc/видео.html. Enjoy your own sense of contentment.
@@gwynnielsen5081 - I agree with what you just wrote in general terms but what I meant is that life was much simpler in the 1980's, much less affected or encumbered by intrusive technology and totally unaffected by social media of course; computers were just coming into general use but there were no iPhones, no Internet, no Facebook, no Twitter and no algorithms to foster division into opposing blocs and groups. Given the high social tensions that affect many if not most countries these days, the 1980's seem like Paradise in retrospect; oh and pop/rock was MUCH BETTER back then as well, and my guess is that if you don't share or can't relate to that general feeling, you hadn't been born yet in the 1980's.
@@armandocardona4478 I hear you, Armando. And I agree. I was born in 1958; however, my music has a fan base of people in their forties. I am extremely happy that my music is being played in the Ukraine now. This song they like: ruclips.net/video/amrXlywecCA/видео.html. 9CeSgxnOkkDU845aRbizWQNymCu. It is obvious why, I think. Can’t believe this song is 40 years old. Time flies :(
Wish could turn the clock and go back. Would definitely not of chosen to waste my life around people that just use other people. " When theres no one left to leave you even you dont quite believe you" cant believe Im this age living as I do. Broken people picker
Philly , doesnt time fly? I am wondering what happened to my 20s. will be 59 in a few months
Can’t believe I am forty years older after first hearing it!!
I do not really like Steve Winwood's big hits but I have a soft spot for this particular song While You See A Chance ... its really a special vibe that belongs to a very special time in human history .... you get immediately transported to that time period and the wonderful innocence of it ....
That’s right the early 80’s .
I never cared for Steve Winwood's music (radio hits) during the 80's. I was too busy listening to heavy metal and hard rock. Then.....I found Traffic..... and some years later...... discovered Blind Faith and BOOM!!!! here I am. Yeah, you Can teach an old dog new tricks!! You're the man Steve, I just needed to hear where you had come from to see the light!
If you were born much earlier you would have started with Spencer Davis Group and Yardbirds then gone on to Traffic and Cream and might have avoided the Heavy Metal phase. Traffic knew how to play the silent pause as well as blast the amps at the same time. The later Heavy Metal bands were lost on this sophistication and simply filled the air with noise.
In that case: go and discover Stevie as the leadsinger/frontman of the Spencer Davis Group!
I'd be honored if some 80s fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of PURPLE RAIN by Prince and PRAYING FOR TIME by George Michael on my YT channel in tribute to 2 of the greatest vocalist-songwriters in music history. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and RESPECT to the legends.
Lol better late than never. Check out Spencer Davis output

I was in between jobs, broke, sent out countless resumes, had just left a bar, fired up a cigarette (was 1998), and this song came on the radio. Cranked it UP! Was such a POSITIVE shot in the arm. Really put the wind in my sails. Funny I remember all these years later....

I think this is the best advice given. Take a chance.
This album hit my desk while I was entertainment editor. Took it home and listened to it. Then listened again. Then wrote the review. Then kept listening and have never stopped.
The beginning of this song reminds me of a beautiful sunrise. It sounds so positive and hopeful. SW, one of the best ever!

I attended Catholic grade school for a few years and the open overture reminds me of the church services I had to attend even though I wasn't catholic. The song came out at the same time I was graduating and moving on to high school. I will always associate that and the song's upbeat feelings with my youth. I can't stop feeling misty eye and nostalgic whenever I listen to it.
I have ALWAYS loved this song. One of those songs you can't help but turn up and sing along. Never tire of it. Classic.
Steve Winwood was such a teenage prodigy that by 1981, he was already a veteran of 17 years or so in the music business, with a deep and varied catalogue to his name. He had first appeared on the album chart in his own right, with a new studio recording, with a self-titled Island release in 1977. But it was on 10 January, 1981 that his solo career really took wing, with the UK chart debut of Arc Of A Diver.
well he was 33 in 1981, not exactly a teenager
I had no idea. Thank you.
@@slaugh84 He started playing in a band at 8yo, joined The Spencer Davis Group when he was 14, and their debut single was released on just 10days after his 16th BD. Have a listen to their Georgia On My Mind cover that was recorded when he was 17, you might forget about his '80s stuff ;-)

One of the best Songs of the 80s. The Feeling of the 80s is so real when you listen to this song. #Like!
I had a horrible shitty day at work...came home and this song poped in my mind....now I can finaly hear it!!
! No song reminds me of such happy feelings and emotions...kindness,innocence,wisdom,happiness,comfort,beauty,life,air,fire,humility,good will, hope ......every note and chord shimmers lightness through the darkness. I know to some it's a romance song but to me it's a song for any chance you want or need to take...maybe I need to find a better Job ! LOL
This is a victory song. An all time favorite of mine!

Mr. Winwood, thank you for all of the music.
Great songs never date. Still sounds modern(whatever that means) Stevie Winwood's voice is golden. The opening chords hook you in and it never lets go. He has one the great Rock voices ever.
For folks like myself, (guitar player, vocalist) SW leaves it all up for grabs, a nice keyboard rhythm section I must say.
This song is extremely dated. I wouldn't think it possible without seeing it with my own eyes, but the video is even more dated.
@@ekscalybur video certainly, but the song and his voice. No way
@@ekscalybur Dated? I don't hear that. Still stands up for me. Contemporary songs of the here and now are more so called dated if they don't stand up to scrutiny of quality rock performances. It's more than a decent song and Winwoods voice carries it off.

How many artists these days play ALL the instruments on an album? Thank you Steve for reminding us of when great music and great musical artists still existed.
I love this song, and I always have. But it reminds me of lost opportunities in life (And I have so many). I wish it wasn't like that--that you only have a limited window to take advantage of something good.
One of my favourite songs! Love it!Released 43 years ago (?), tomorrow (Dec.30th) is my 61st birthday, together with my son who will be 21.
Steve had a nice solo run in the 80's
+Ruben Delgadillo he really did but he seemed to be everywhere in the 80s, you just couldn't escape his music on tv especially those michelob commercials.
sharpasaneraser Phil Collins had the same issue. Talented but inescapable. His image and popularity overshadowed just how skilled and prolific he was
I've heard it said, "No one comes from nowhere". Looking up Winwood's origins is a fascinating journey.
He had a great career before the 80's too. He was in Blind Faith, with Eric Clapton! Steve Winwood is a very talented musician, who was able to stay relevant thru the decades, thats hard to do.
Actually, he got his start at the beginning of the British Invasion as a member and lead singer of the Spencer Davis Group. They had a hit single with "Gimme Some Lovin" around the same time The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were dominating the pop charts. He left that group to hook up with Eric Clapton to form Blind Faith, and he formed the group Traffic in the 1970's. He went solo by the end of that decade and this song was his big hit as a solo artist.
love Steve and all his wonderful works!!
Steve Winwood is the man!!!!! ......Period!!
I Agree
Such an underrated singer, so many great songs.
I really love the synthesizers at the beginning of this song.
This song reminds me of my ex wife and me when we first started out - there wasn't anything we couldn't do. We even went overseas when I was in the military. That's when our first child was conceived. We came back and the years went by and we just grew apart unfortunately. But this song always brings back the picture in my mind of the two of us and it hurts, but I still listen.
One of those songs that i seem to like listening to more and more, the more time goes by. Lyrically, vocally and instrumentally, perfectly capturing the magical feelings and the evocative radiance of exuberant youth.
This Song Went To Number 7 On The Billboard Hot-100 Chart In 1981.
