Are fiberglass rods good??? DANKUNG GLASSFIN BFS Rod Initial Review

  • Hey guys!
    Just wanted to share an initial video of the Dankung Glassfin rod. Primarily this rod is meant for flick casting and is really flickin’ fun to cast. I have really enjoyed this rod and go over the reasons why in the video as well as some of the downsides of the rod. I was given this rod, free of charge, for an unbiased review. If you’re interested in picking up your own please use the discount code below, it’ll save you $5 off your purchase. If you use the coupon code I will receive a small commission with its use. If you don’t want to use the code no worries the link is a direct link to the glassfin rod. Thanks as always for watching and cheers!
    PS the writing on the rod says “Chinese Hook Snout Carp”. 😉
    PPS it was brought to my attention that I said that the rod ferrule coming loose and detaching was a small issue. I realize that this might not be the case for everyone. In my case, it is not a big issue as I was able to make a quick and easy fix with some CA glue I had on hand.
    In addition to this, the ferrule coming loose may have been caused by myself and/or may have been a defect. There’s not really any way for me to know as the ferrule was attached to the rod on my delivery of it. I actually assembled the rod two or three times before the ferrule came loose. I do recall flexing/shaking the rod quite vigorously to test how flexible it is before disassembling the rod and finding that the ferrule had come loose. Long story short, Im not really sure what caused the ferrule to come loose but instead of opting to send the rod back I chose to speak with Dankung and they advised me on how I could fix the issue myself. Some CA glue on the ferrule, a push back into the black and voila I had a working rod. Please keep in mind that you may not experience a similar issue and also note that this is a hand made product so there will be inconsistencies. Also, note that this is not a $550 rod and is technicaly considered a “budget” rod designed to deliver performance at a fraction of the cost. I highly suggest that you do your due diligence as a consumer and watch as many reviews and read as much as you can and ask as many questions as you can before making your purchase and any purchase in general. I hope this information helps you and if you ever have an issue or question with my review please dont hesitate to let me know. I am always always always open to constructive criticism. Cheers!

      Hey! I actually have a huge affinity for shorter rods. Even for lake and pond fishing haha. I know they wont give me that distance that a longer rod will give me but I really enjoy the compact size and control I get out of them. With this rod you get the added bonus of being able to flick cast wherever you want essentially. I plan on setting up a target practice area inside the house to practice and get better at flick casting lol. There is definitely an art to flick casting that I do not have hahaha I probably look like an albatross trying to take flight flapping my arms all over the place lol... Hey there! This rod is really designed for use with small minnow crank baits. The lures are typically very shallow diving, weight between 2.5g-5g, and are between 30-50mm in length. However, I have used small 1.5g cheburasha jig setups with 2.5” worms to catch dink bass and the sensitivity and control is great. I really think the rod can be used for a variety of types of lures so long as you stay within that 1-5g lure weight range with 2-4g being the sweet spot. Hope that helps and cheers!

      Hey John! Appreciate the comment! Yes, there are definitely some inconsistencies of it being a handmade product and what’s acceptable to us may not be to some. Totally understandable and I want every viewer to be able to make their own decisions =). That being said, imho the performance of the rod outweighs the issue I experienced. Flick casting really is so much fun and not easy to do with a graphite or carbon fiber rod due to the higher modulus of elasticity. Fiberglass has a lower modulus and slower to recover which allows for a more forgiving load up and release. Really glad that there are “budget” entries that give us this type of action. I wonder if it’s possible to have a similar style of performance on an even faster style rod 🤔. Maybe something for the manufacture to consider haha. Anyhow, thanks for sharing and cheers!

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  4 месяца назад +1

      Hey bike! I used bob smith maxi-cure CA glue because it’s a bit thicker of a CA glue and I was hoping it would take a bit longer to cure giving me time to push the male spigot down into the blank. This didn’t quite happen as I imagined it so I’d probably look for a CA glue that specifically says slow cure on it. I checked Amazon and it looks like loctite has an extra time control version or zap has a slo-zap version. I’d probably try one of these. I’d still try to work as fast as possible though. Add a small even amount to a piece of glossy printed on cardboard(this is so no little paper fibers stick to the spigot) and then dab the outer circumference of the tip of the male spigot and kind of spread it so it’s a thin even layer on the piece of glossy cardboard. Then jam that end into the rod blank. The excess glue can be shaved off carefully with an xacto blade or if you’re daring enough wiped off but wiping off the glue will likely trap some fibers of whatever you’re using to wipe it off in it. The glue so far has held very well. The manufacturer actually uses some sort of liquid epoxy and CA glue seems to be their suggested glue to use. Hope that helps! Cheers my friend!

    I own this rod/blank in the spinning version. It is Hands Down the best spinning rod I own. I have some JDM carbon rods, costing up to around $400. Yes, they are very different animals than this, with their very light weight and their amazing sensitivity. But they are Not as fun as this rod. The taper is ideal. I have two other excellent UL glass (one JDM and one custom rod from the US) but both are stiffer in the tip than this rod, so less fun to cast super-light baits. With high-end 5-lb JDM braid, the tiny tungsten jigs that I tie cast beautifully. Because of this rod's light tip, it's just easier to cast hyperlight baits with this rod than with the stiff-tipped carbon rods, even my UL ones. The rod as a casting tool is So forgiving.
    Where this rod really shines is in fish-fighting. With this rod, I landed a carp of approximately 10 pounds in Kentucky a couple of years ago that I foul hooked In The Tail, using 3-lb JDM braid (Unitaka Night Game) = not much fun for the angler or the fish. The rod handled it amazingly well. As with virtually any glass rod, you don't have to worry about breaking it, even on very heavy fish. No, I don't recommend this rod for anything but smaller fish, but it Will handle a monster if you are patient.
    I'm a professional fly-casting instructor, and am simply not swayed by what my rods look like, but this rod is very nice to look at. The un-tinted glass kind of glows.
    I confess to initially being skeptical that the CDM could design a truly great rod. Boy, was I wrong about that! This rod is a remarkable achievement. If DanKung starts making comparable rods that are stouter in power, sign me up. (And, no, I have no relationship with DanKung.)

      Hey there! Are you referring to my ability to cast a trout magnet? Or do you mean is the rod capable of casting a trout magnet?

      @@BFSFISHINGCHANNEL Sorry, meant to ask how far the rod was able to throw the trout magnet

      @@duck4389 no worries! Just wanted to clarify the question. While the rod is capable of 1g casting I think the sweet spot is around 2-4g for this rod. Of course, I could just be a novice at casting 1g with this rod and another person might be better at it. If you’re looking for distance with trout magnets I think there are better rods for that. Ooc how far are you looking to cast trout magnets?

      @@duck4389 I think with the right person 30 ft seems possible. I think I’ve been getting around 25-30 ft with a 1g practice lure and I’m not that great of a distance caster apparently haha. I’ve been comparing myself to some other friends and they, on average, seem to get around 20% further casts than myself with any given setup. I’m wondering if it’s my casting style or perhaps the line I’m using as my rod/reel setups are fairly similar to what they use. Imho though, this rod isn’t really meant for distance casting but more for accurate shorter distance casts. For something that excels at both accuracy and distance you might want to look at the taller version of this rod. I believe it’s a 4’11” but don’t quote me on that. It’s not too much taller but it should help with getting as much distance as you can out of the rod.

      Hmmmm… not sure why the link is broken but go to www.dankung.com and search for the glassfin. There are several models available but the website is a bit hard to navigate admittedly… If you want to use the coupon code you are more than welcome to but there is also no pressure to do so. I believe it saves you like $5 off of the final price. Hope that helps! Let me know if you can’t find it still. Cheers!

    Ferrule is not good enough, But generally speaking , its Ferrule is more solid than Anglo glass rod's ferrule

      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  Год назад

      Other than the butt section ferrule coming out I have had no issues. Reattaching was quite easy as well. I wish I could have an Anglo glass rod to test against but I am not willing to pay their $550 asking price. Also, I believe they stopped production of their rods recently?
