Such a simple concept but I still struggle to wrap my head around it when folding folios. I will be rewatching your video again for sure. Thank you. Great explanations as always!

Completely agree. I've been a card maker type paper crafter for years and it was only talking to a bookbinder friend that l learnt about paper grain.

Loved this demonstration! Very visual, I had seen the demonstration with making the paper wet before but never heard the explanation _why_ that happens; the demonstration with the sushi mat was perfect!

Perfect explanation, thank you. The sushi mat analogue is so simple but clear.
For some reason l have a mental 'blind spot' about grain direction, l can't explain it but it is like the 'righty - tighty, lefty - loosey' concept for screwing/unscrewing: l have to make myself think where my hand is moving to, not where it starts. Sounds ridiculous, l know! I'll be coming back to this video often, l can tell.

I have had many an odd look when I ask about grain direction at the printers.
I've used the cutting strips at the corner and wetting them to find the grain direction myself.
I have pdf books that I want to print out and bind myself.
I read better when the paper is green tinted, and trying to find green paper A3 size with the correct grain direction has proven difficult.
So I am seeing if I can tint white paper and if then the printing ink will hold onto the paper after tinting it.
It is an interesting experiment so far just getting the colour unifirm on the paper. 😊

That is very interesting, thank you for sharing. If tinting paper doesn’t work, I would try finding the paper in larger size and ask to cut it correctly at the printer’s
