    A story about democracy:
A farmer asked his son before he died, "Pigs complain about poor feed, cows complain about heavy work, and chickens complain about dirty nests. What should you do?". The son said: "Change to good feed, buy more cows, clean up Chicken coop." The farmer shook his head and said. "No, don't do anything. Let them vote, let them choose you or your wife to take care of them, and let them think they are the boss”.
    Son’s idea = Chinese democracy
Father’s idea = American liberal democracy

After overthrowing the Farmer the Pigs held an election organized by them and placed their candidacy on the ballot to be the leaders of the farm. The Pigs wrote a constitution that protected the rights of all farm animals; banned all humans from the farm; and prohibited farm animals from dealing with or behaving like human. Henceforth, all farm animals shall enjoy “Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality.” The Pigs broadcasted the dogma as only they could operate the printing machine. The Pigs collected all sorts of taxes from the farm animals according the mantra: from each according to his ability and to each according to his need. This is called Western Democracy. When a group of ass and cows asked why the Pigs don’t work as hard as everyone yet live like the 1% humans, the Pigs replied: we are all created equal, but some of us are more equal than others,

The only thing that is different is that the political leader is not called “consul” , although they do use this term in other contexts.

One must know one's own mistakes, correct them to improve one's own self. Attacking others is not only inappropriate but down right dangerous because one can only improve when one knows one's mistakes. Attacking others when they are doing things correctly can actually lead to wrong policy. A typical example is US's approach to contain covid by different or opposing to that of China is now killing US slowly. US should find out why after two years with the best technology and best medical care that it can still have daily infections and covid deaths more than the 55 African countries put together.

Mr Martin Jacques is right. But, he is not the only one who is saying that. The European think tank already warned last year that the biggest danger to democracy is the usa, and not China. The European and other countries who love democracy must not follow the usa’s policy of domination, but correct it and stand firm against it. China is not the danger to the world, but the usa and its cronies are.

I would disagree that China need to learn and master the know how to interact with Western Opinion particularly since such western opinions are always so abstract, hypocritical, relative and perceptive. It is better for the West to stop having any expectation of China interacting with their opinion in manners acceptable to them. The better way would be for both to interact objectively base on scientific and mathematical facts rather than opinions. Fact maters but not opinions (no matter how many)

I'd say you underestimated the power of public opinion, especially global public opinion. Due to the constraint of its one-party state, China has never had to face the public to explain its actions no matter how good the intention may be. This negligence spilled over to the world stage where it used to stress that actions/facts speak louder than words while forgetting altogether that words/opinions are just as important. China needs to learn and master the know-how to take back the upper hand in global public opinion in its interaction with the world at large.
Lithuania blindly followed American instructions by allowing the Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius but never truly realized the American grand scheme to instill onto the world a false sense of "One China, One Taiwan" to forever split the Chinese nation when enough world leaders see that as a normalcy. While reacting harshly to Lithuanian move, China almost forgot to fight back on the field of global public opinion -- that is, pointing out to the world the evil American ploy against the Chinese nation. Again, I'd like to reiterate that China would be wise to learn the art of subtle persuasion to gain worldwide acceptance.

@@jackchiu7560 I never underestimated the power of public opinions - it is the very fact that the destructive and disruptive forces of such opinions which are so diverse and largely based on ones biasness and perceptions are the one killing democracy as we know it today. All over the world you see government and it's people engaging in endless politicking. In today's high-tech era, Opinions are like "Analog" Signals while Facts/Data are Digital. The world initially has problems migrating from analog to digital but if you look at it in hindsight it was a good idea to abandon the analog world. AI technology will become mainstream very soon. Taiwan has a "Digital" Minister who described democracy is (can be) a set of technologies that can be employed to govern in a transparent and solution driven manner. The increasing number of tech savvy, proponents of block-chained, crypto technology younger generation yearning to embrace what they call as "Digital Government". Now I doubt western democracy today especially the US are driven by such digital ideals - it is more like a "Zombie" democracy and so the US or the west should not insist they be treated like a Prima Donna. The world need to make a paradigm shift and China (or maybe Taiwan?) is in a leading position to implement this to proof it to the rest of the world. A case in point would be to see how China had handled the Covid-19 pandemic vis a vis its western counterpart.

The profound knowledge in this book were lost but are now being rediscovered. The 64 hexagrams in the text of the book are composed of combination of a full "dash" and a "broken dash" is essentially Digital in nature! Like 1 and 0 as we know it in todays digital world.

They took advantage of the situation when they took the lead in industrialization forgetting that given the same conditions others will catch up once they know the tricks of economic progress. In the case of China, she simply has the numbers to generate the kinds of people who would compete to produce whatever they want. Over the years, since she got involved into the world economy, she had out-performed practically every other nation with shear energy and imagination.

Martin is absolutely right here. The reason for the decline is the failure of western democracies or i should say western Plutoncracies to adapt to changes. Because of the wide spread view that the western system is a universal system that should be exported to other regions/countries without first understanding of other cultures/people is the biggest mistake.
Secondly, countries like the USA, UK, France, Australia, Canada, Spain have a long history of colonailsim, especially UK, France, USA, Spain. So having these 4 countries dictate international law, international rules based system to the rest of the world is a direct insult to countries who were colonised by them. Which explains why Mexico, Bolivia, many other South/Latin American countries boycotted the recent US led summit of the Americas.
This gradual decline of the western system will continue as long as western politicians stay on their self destructive path of no return. They haven't learn anything frfom history at all.
I find it extremely arrogant, willful ignorance on the part of western media, western politicians, who seem to think they don't have to learn to even adpat to changes in this world regarding the power dhisft from west to east. This is sadly ignorance, arrogance, from the west.
I can only see a dark cloud forming in the west as the years progress, yet on the other hand, i see a much brighter future ahead for ASEAN & the global south.

Democracy is nothing complicated: it is the chant slogan the young dragons-layer used to get support and killed the evil dragon. But once being worshiped as the savior and with gold possessed from the dead dragon, the young hero soon corrupted and turned into a new evil dragon. After all, it is human nature to pursue wealthy and reputation, especially when the bad guy is defeated. Those words like "democracy and liberty" are still used by the hero to stabilize his position. Only the real meaning has changed silently:"I am icon of democracy and liberty, anyone against me is the opposite of these." I mean: human is hopelessly doomed to this dead loop, west or east. But for now, west is the evil dragon that still pretend to be the slayer.

“I do not say that democracy has been more pernicious on the whole, and in the long run, than monarchy or aristocracy. Democracy has never been and never can be so durable as aristocracy or monarchy; but while it lasts, it is more bloody than either. ... Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to say that democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious, or less avaricious than aristocracy or monarchy. It is not true, in fact, and nowhere appears in history. Those passions are the same in all men, under all forms of simple government, and when unchecked, produce the same effects of fraud, violence, and cruelty. When clear prospects are opened before vanity, pride, avarice, or ambition, for their easy gratification, it is hard for the most considerate philosophers and the most conscientious moralists to resist the temptation. Individuals have conquered themselves. Nations and large bodies of men, never.”

The fundamental theory behind democracy is to use popular opinion of the people to decide on matters under consideration. It is naturally fair to apply on handling national matters. However, somehow the idea has long been twisted to being applied on the trust of politicians handling all matters. Once an election is made, the winning politicians have all the rights to decide on ALL matters. So, troubles arise with 'all the rights' and ALL matters'. Normally, if those politicians are decent candidates, they should respect the opinions of the people and administer accordingly for the benefit of the nation. Sadly this concept of democracy are definitely abused by Western politicians to rule with self benefits. These facts are obvious in American politics and do not need to be further discussed.
Professor Jacques briefly mentioned about the expansion of Western powers in the last few centuries and their invasions on non-white races all over the world. But he hasn't emphasized on series of incidents sparked by the Opium Wars in the mid-1800s, the 1900 invasion of the Eight Nations Alliances into China burning palaces, looting treasures, occupying territories and enslaving people. This was followed by dividing Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, African nations and more and more. This narcissistic behaviour gradually developed into the 'Monroe Doctrine' sugar-coating the 'Destiny Manifest'. The result developed into seeding Donald Trump's ambition. In fact it is not only Donald's ideology. It is also built into every politicians in the U.S., Republican and Democrats. The real tragedy is the the use of terrorist tactics by the CIA openly murdering myriad of innocent people around the world in order to achieve their goals (bragged by Pompeo recorded in video). I was totally devastated by their use of student soldiers throwing gas bombs, burning pedestrians alive with cash rewards etc.).
So, are they human or just animals? Of course, they are human when it is in their own interests. But they are barbaric when it is NOT.
So, where do these barbaric acts come from ? Greed ? Yes but enhanced by the abused system of capitalism. Like what they so-called democracy, capitalism is just one of the behaviours of a free trade system. With capital you invest and profit and there there is nothing wrong with it. Without capital you are out of luck, so you earn and save to create your own capital. However, if you don't have the capital to invest but you are a bank you can have free capital from the government because they will lend you the capital to build your own. So, who can be a bank ? Those approved by the government. Why can't you or I be a bank ? Tough luck, man. It is the CONNECTION. So, politicians have the absolute POWER to loan at their discretions. The more free money the bankers have, the more they want to make. Lobbying the government with all means they can be licensed to trade in all financial markets. If you are a banker in the casino with unlimited cash backing, you win no matter what. If you kick-back a little bit of commissions to your backer, they will supply you with more. So, this is currently the status of American Capitalism. The elite rich throws the dice, the middle-class paying shark-loan interest to credit card companies, the poor lining up at the food banks and the politicians laughing and waving their weapons to loot from all over the world. It is more exciting than a Netflix series.

Agreed. We in Nigeria have been practicing uninterrupted western style democracy for over two decades without any positives to show for it. What democracy does is to guarantee the concentration of power & resources in the hands of few people to the detriment of overall prosperity of the nation. The situation is same in countries such as India, Brazil, Pakistan, Mexico etc. We are not even talking about places like Iraq & Libya where direct US interventions in the name of democracy has ensured a chaotic & rather unfortunate outcomes.
