A story about democracy: A farmer asked his son before he died, "Pigs complain about poor feed, cows complain about heavy work, and chickens complain about dirty nests. What should you do?". The son said: "Change to good feed, buy more cows, clean up Chicken coop." The farmer shook his head and said. "No, don't do anything. Let them vote, let them choose you or your wife to take care of them, and let them think they are the boss”. Son’s idea = Chinese democracy Father’s idea = American liberal democracy
After overthrowing the Farmer the Pigs held an election organized by them and placed their candidacy on the ballot to be the leaders of the farm. The Pigs wrote a constitution that protected the rights of all farm animals; banned all humans from the farm; and prohibited farm animals from dealing with or behaving like human. Agree on 99% of what is being said, but the one major area I disagree is the statement that US will intervene when the other country does not fulfil the democratic principles, that is false, US will intervene against all countries that don’t follow or promote policies that benefit US interests, eg, Saudi Arabia, is totally undemocratic with repressive religious and women rights, but the full US support. You are absolutely correct. But the US government was inspired by the Roman Republic anyway, not classical Greek democracy. Professor has gone one thing spot on. He advocates self-analysis or self criticism. US has totally ignored its own failings and concentrating on containing China as a remedy for its own failures. One must know one's own mistakes, correct them to improve one's own self. Attacking others is not only inappropriate but down right dangerous because one can only improve when one knows one's mistakes. Attacking others when they are doing things correctly can actually lead to wrong policy. A typical example is US's approach to contain covid by different or opposing to that of China is now killing US slowly. US should find out why after two years with the best technology and best medical care that it can still have daily infections and covid deaths more than the 55 African countries put together.
A part of the problem is that a lot of American voters seem to love easy solutions to their problems, such as blaming foreign countries for anything bad. That means that to get elected, politicians have to - to some extent - follow up on the blaming.

Democracy only works in the absence of corruption, selfish self interests and inequality. Since Western capitalism means all of those things democracy in that state can not survive without wholesale looting and exploitation of other nations to keep the population relatively wealthy . Since Iraq and Afghanistan proved it cost them more in treasures than they can steal the option of looting goes out of the window . China proved that exploitation can work both ways by appealing to the capitalist’s greed .Now we are seeing Western democracy disintegrating before our eyes . Jan 6th 2020 was just a taste of things to come .
Democracy is nowhere to be found. The USSA is a republic, with an imperial realm forged by the sword. The economic 'model' sic of the USSA is pillage and plunder of weaker peoples. Fortunately for the world, other powers are rising to possibly reverse the reach of USSA imperialism.
I suspect it is a little more resilient than that. Some big reforms are needed and the capitalist wealthy class better pay attention or perhaps you will be right
You have a point here. Democracy only works when there are strong independant institutions behind it. Can falter or fail if not. Some countries make the transition and work like Taiwan. Recently though there have been failures. Those countries subject to western intervention.

election is not democracy. it is ritual obeisance to oligarchy. democracy is rule by the citizens. that's what the word means, it does not mean rule by elite, of any nature.
It's a sad fact that the American people have the rights to elections but the citizens are cut off from knowledge about the activities of those who exercise real power. And then they'll have to wait another 4 years to try to get it back. And the cycle goes on and on and on. That's American-style democracy.
Democracy systems meant the rights to vote only ! Thereafter , these politicians have forgotten they are civil servants meaning to serve the people , these mindset have been seen in many democratic nations.

Mr Martin Jacques is right. But, he is not the only one who is saying that. The European think tank already warned last year that the biggest danger to democracy is the usa, and not China. China is not the danger to the world, but the usa and its cronies are.

I would disagree that China need to learn and master the know how to interact with Western Opinion particularly since such western opinions are always so abstract, hypocritical, relative and perceptive. It is better for the West to stop having any expectation of China interacting with their opinion in manners acceptable to them. The better way would be for both to interact objectively base on scientific and mathematical facts rather than opinions. Fact maters but not opinions (no matter how many)
@Buddy oo I'd say you underestimated the power of public opinion, especially global public opinion. Due to the constraint of its one-party state, China has never had to face the public to explain its actions no matter how good the intention may be. This negligence spilled over to the world stage where it used to stress that actions/facts speak louder than words while forgetting altogether that words/opinions are just as important. China needs to learn and master the know-how to take back the upper hand in global public opinion in its interaction with the world at large. Lithuania blindly followed American instructions by allowing the Taiwanese Representative Office in Vilnius but never truly realized the American grand scheme to instill onto the world a false sense of "One China, One Taiwan" to forever split the Chinese nation when enough world leaders see that as a normalcy. While reacting harshly to Lithuanian move, China almost forgot to fight back on the field of global public opinion -- that is, pointing out to the world the evil American ploy against the Chinese nation. Again, I'd like to reiterate that China would be wise to learn the art of subtle persuasion to gain worldwide acceptance.
@@jackchiu7560 I never underestimated the power of public opinions - it is the very fact that the destructive and disruptive forces of such opinions which are so diverse and largely based on ones biasness and perceptions are the one killing democracy as we know it today. All over the world you see government and it's people engaging in endless politicking. In today's high-tech era, Opinions are like "Analog" Signals while Facts/Data are Digital. The world initially has problems migrating from analog to digital but if you look at it in hindsight it was a good idea to abandon the analog world. AI technology will become mainstream very soon. Taiwan has a "Digital" Minister who described democracy is (can be) a set of technologies that can be employed to govern in a transparent and solution driven manner. The increasing number of tech savvy, proponents of block-chained, crypto technology younger generation yearning to embrace what they call as "Digital Government". Now I doubt western democracy today especially the US are driven by such digital ideals - it is more like a "Zombie" democracy and so the US or the west should not insist they be treated like a Prima Donna. The world need to make a paradigm shift and China (or maybe Taiwan?) is in a leading position to implement this to proof it to the rest of the world. A case in point would be to see how China had handled the Covid-19 pandemic vis a vis its western counterpart.
@@jackchiu7560 So I am not saying public opinion is not important - I am saying China don't need to do it like how the US or the West are doing it. China should do it in its own legitimate, fact based manner. Prof Jacques said "learn to interact" I said no need.
And I agree with Prof Jacques / Pro Francis Fukuyama observations that the Chinese governing system are very deep rooted, far deeper than any western system of governance because in my opinion it was based on the i-Ching (The Book of change). The profound knowledge in this book were lost but are now being rediscovered. The 64 hexagrams in the text of the book are composed of combination of a full "dash" and a "broken dash" is essentially Digital in nature! Like 1 and 0 as we know it in todays digital world.
Thank you sir for your considered opinion, it seems clear to me you have studied and observed what is happening to the world and have for the most part come to the correct opinion.
In most societies once they had a grip over others they would slowly assumed that the divine power had endorsed them to lead forever! They took advantage of the situation when they took the lead in industrialization forgetting that given the same conditions others will catch up once they know the tricks of economic progress. In the case of China, she simply has the numbers to generate the kinds of people who would compete to produce whatever they want. Over the years, since she got involved into the world economy, she had out-performed practically every other nation with shear energy and imagination.
I agree very much. Democracy has become political religion. It needs to evolve to be better rather than to dominate. It makes no sense to get ignorant populations to choose wisely under intense political marketing.
While Trump was more blatantly hostile, opinion about China began to change when China started to change from a source of cheap labor and huge markets into a tech competitor - Free markets and competition gets great lip service but is only truly loved by those winning the competition, whenever businesses are not strictly regulated they always seek monopoly power -harsh American capitalism cannot help itself, it wants to squeeze out every nickel and it doesn't care if it immiserates billions or ends human civilization itself.

Martin is absolutely right here. The reason for the decline is the failure of western democracies or i should say western Plutoncracies to adapt to changes. Because of the wide spread view that the western system is a universal system that should be exported to other regions/countries without first understanding of other cultures/people is the biggest mistake. Secondly, countries like the USA, UK, France, Australia, Canada, Spain have a long history of colonailsim, especially UK, France, USA, Spain. So having these 4 countries dictate international law, international rules based system to the rest of the world is a direct insult to countries who were colonised by them. Which explains why Mexico, Bolivia, many other South/Latin American countries boycotted the recent US led summit of the Americas. This gradual decline of the western system will continue as long as western politicians stay on their self destructive path of no return. They haven't learn anything frfom history at all. I find it extremely arrogant, willful ignorance on the part of western media, western politicians, who seem to think they don't have to learn to even adpat to changes in this world regarding the power dhisft from west to east. This is sadly ignorance, arrogance, from the west. I can only see a dark cloud forming in the west as the years progress, yet on the other hand, i see a much brighter future ahead for ASEAN & the global south.
People only work for the people that are responsible for their jobs. Only in a democracy are the leaders responsible for the people, because they elect them.
Democracy is nothing complicated: it is the chant slogan the young dragons-layer used to get support and killed the evil dragon. But once being worshiped as the savior and with gold possessed from the dead dragon, the young hero soon corrupted and turned into a new evil dragon. After all, it is human nature to pursue wealthy and reputation, especially when the bad guy is defeated. Those words like "democracy and liberty" are still used by the hero to stabilize his position. Only the real meaning has changed silently:"I am icon of democracy and liberty, anyone against me is the opposite of these." I mean: human is hopelessly doomed to this dead loop, west or east. But for now, west is the evil dragon that still pretend to be the slayer.
All kingdom and system fail given enough time without updating / amendments. How many are able to compare, analysis and give balance opinion based on facts? Many are biased, and some are biased to the extreme, regardless of facts.
“I do not say that democracy has been more pernicious on the whole, and in the long run, than monarchy or aristocracy. Democracy has never been and never can be so durable as aristocracy or monarchy; but while it lasts, it is more bloody than either. ... Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to say that democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious, or less avaricious than aristocracy or monarchy. It is not true, in fact, and nowhere appears in history. Those passions are the same in all men, under all forms of simple government, and when unchecked, produce the same effects of fraud, violence, and cruelty. When clear prospects are opened before vanity, pride, avarice, or ambition, for their easy gratification, it is hard for the most considerate philosophers and the most conscientious moralists to resist the temptation. Individuals have conquered themselves. Nations and large bodies of men, never.” ― John Adams, 2nd President of the USA, The Letters of John and Abigail Adams
historical context? In Netherlands women got the vote in 1919 in Switserland they got the vote in 1971 so why are we not in your list of democratic countries and Switserland is?
The fundamental theory behind democracy is to use popular opinion of the people to decide on matters under consideration. It is naturally fair to apply on handling national matters. However, somehow the idea has long been twisted to being applied on the trust of politicians handling all matters. Once an election is made, the winning politicians have all the rights to decide on ALL matters. So, troubles arise with 'all the rights' and ALL matters'. Normally, if those politicians are decent candidates, they should respect the opinions of the people and administer accordingly for the benefit of the nation. Sadly this concept of democracy are definitely abused by Western politicians to rule with self benefits. These facts are obvious in American politics and do not need to be further discussed. Professor Jacques briefly mentioned about the expansion of Western powers in the last few centuries and their invasions on non-white races all over the world. But he hasn't emphasized on series of incidents sparked by the Opium Wars in the mid-1800s, the 1900 invasion of the Eight Nations Alliances into China burning palaces, looting treasures, occupying territories and enslaving people. This was followed by dividing Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, African nations and more and more. This narcissistic behaviour gradually developed into the 'Monroe Doctrine' sugar-coating the 'Destiny Manifest'. The result developed into seeding Donald Trump's ambition. In fact it is not only Donald's ideology. It is also built into every politicians in the U.S., Republican and Democrats. The real tragedy is the the use of terrorist tactics by the CIA openly murdering myriad of innocent people around the world in order to achieve their goals (bragged by Pompeo recorded in video). I was totally devastated by their use of student soldiers throwing gas bombs, burning pedestrians alive with cash rewards etc.). So, are they human or just animals? Of course, they are human when it is in their own interests. But they are barbaric when it is NOT. So, where do these barbaric acts come from ? Greed ? Yes but enhanced by the abused system of capitalism. Like what they so-called democracy, capitalism is just one of the behaviours of a free trade system. With capital you invest and profit and there there is nothing wrong with it. Without capital you are out of luck, so you earn and save to create your own capital. However, if you don't have the capital to invest but you are a bank you can have free capital from the government because they will lend you the capital to build your own. So, who can be a bank ? Those approved by the government. Why can't you or I be a bank ? Tough luck, man. It is the CONNECTION. So, politicians have the absolute POWER to loan at their discretions. The more free money the bankers have, the more they want to make. Lobbying the government with all means they can be licensed to trade in all financial markets. If you are a banker in the casino with unlimited cash backing, you win no matter what. If you kick-back a little bit of commissions to your backer, they will supply you with more. So, this is currently the status of American Capitalism. The elite rich throws the dice, the middle-class paying shark-loan interest to credit card companies, the poor lining up at the food banks and the politicians laughing and waving their weapons to loot from all over the world. It is more exciting than a Netflix series.
The problem with democracies is that politicians divides the nation according to their agendas and when the votes are counted , it results in a hung government which is an unworkable government. It is happening in america canada germany india malaysia etc.
Agreed. We in Nigeria have been practicing uninterrupted western style democracy for over two decades without any positives to show for it. What democracy does is to guarantee the concentration of power & resources in the hands of few people to the detriment of overall prosperity of the nation. The situation is same in countries such as India, Brazil, Pakistan, Mexico etc. We are not even talking about places like Iraq & Libya where direct US interventions in the name of democracy has ensured a chaotic & rather unfortunate outcomes. China’s success story has opened our eyes. It is time to take a cue.
The US Democracy conceived in 1778 is vastly different than the current Democracy in USA. Much has altered the 1778 Democracy, not the least the formation of two powerful political parties, the arise of the wealthy and influential labor unions and corporations, and the organized political action lobby groups. Today’s Government corruption is on a scale not conceivable by the Framers of the US Constitution.
Because the democracy games is rich people's games, it has doubled standards, good for rich people that is good thing, not good for rich people that is bad thing.
I only hope, that like the British Empire under Queen Elizabeth 2, declined relatively gracefully, the US may follow in conceding its perceived position in the greater world.
To be fair, Trumps' criticism of China was confined to trade issues. He even more often attacked US leaders for shipping US manufacturing abroad: Not blaming China for taking advantage of the new US trade policy. Beyond Trump, there are groups from the Left and Right who are "morally" offended by China for its various policies but Trumps preoccupation with china was as anyone with an America-First agenda would be, based on how it affects the US.

Henceforth, all farm animals shall enjoy “Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality.” The Pigs broadcasted the dogma as only they could operate the printing machine. @@pradyutbhattacharjee1407 Agreed. Those people can influence public opinion a lot. But strong separate institutions can challenge that - free press, freedom of speech rule of law. If all these are subservient as in a authoritarian government with censorship then this is far worse than the problem of power individuals within society. There are flavors of democracy - none perfect and still work in progress.
China is the one country that is strong and big enough to not follow and that’s why the US is using allots power and its allies to denegrade and contain China.
Well, I can point out to you the sequence of events happen in Venezuela. Isn't that an intervention of Venezuela internal affair using Guaido who is not an elected candidate and recognises him as President? Also, Hong Kong riots? What about in Bolivia until the Socialist party overthrew the US supported coup who forced the president to escape to Argentina living in exile?
in conclusion: Democracy or communist, any country that doesn't please US or threaten its interests will be punished on a scale of arms embargo to outright bombing said country to the stone age

Do we consider having election as a democracy even if all other criteria were not fulfilled?. How can we consider the British Empire as being democratic between 1918 until 1938?. Very spot on comments which a lot of Westerners still have difficulty understanding. But this does not matter very much as long as they just keep their way of running their countries for themselves and stop forcing other countries to adopt it.
China wants to influence many counteries so said counteries behave in a manor to CCP approval. Look at recentouting of CCP trying to buy influence in the UK like the did in Australia. Politicians have a choice - serve their electorate or get rich on CCP money and do as the CCP say. Works well in counteries that do no have strong independant institutions. Not so successful in those that do.

What is really western democracy? General election? The purpose of an election is to have elected officials serve the majority of people, not the top 1% or special interest groups. I just don't see the western democracy, especially the one in the US has ever achieved that.
It did under Franklin Roosevelt who was elected 4 times because he did actual good things for the masses at the expense of the wealthy.
You are absolutely correct. But the US government was inspired by the Roman Republic anyway, not classical Greek democracy. You can see this in their political terminology - they have “senators” who work in the “capitol”. The US symbol is an Eagle, like Imperial Rome. The only thing that is different is that the political leader is not called “consul” , although they do use this term in other contexts.

The duty of the government is to provide security, progress, sustainable living, bright future for her own people. All else is just empty words.
The US thinks the same way as you said, for its own people. But US also attacks other countries to protect its interests and its people.

Politicians are civil servants bound to serve the people .
And Chynese politicians have an extremely long period of real education before stepping up. In earlier times, political learning was an art form, and considered a high privilege, extended only to the brightest and deepest thinkers. An honour even.
Modern western leaders appear only to learn how to lie convincingly, for personal gain.
Mr Martin Jacques is right. But, he is not the only one who is saying that. The European think tank already warned last year that the biggest danger to democracy is the usa, and not China. The European and other countries who love democracy must not follow the usa’s policy of domination, but correct it and stand firm against it.

Fact maters but not opinions (no matter how many)
@Buddy oo
I'd say you underestimated the power of public opinion, especially global public opinion.
You hit the nail when you mentioned perception.
This is so true for the west.

Western democracy or world democracy?
In most societies once they had a grip over others they would slowly assumed that the divine power had endorsed them to lead forever! They took advantage of the situation when they took the lead in industrialization forgetting that given the same conditions others will catch up once they know the tricks of economic progress. In the case of China, she simply has the numbers to generate the kinds of people who would compete to produce whatever they want. Over the years, since she got involved into the world economy, she had out-performed practically every other nation with shear energy and imagination.

Nations and large bodies of men, never.”

100% when you can't deliver to the people's, people's will go against you .
To be fair, Trumps' criticism of China was confined to trade issues. He even more often attacked US leaders for shipping US manufacturing abroad: Not blaming China for taking advantage of the new US trade policy.
Beyond Trump, there are groups from the Left and Right who are "morally" offended by China for its various policies but Trumps preoccupation with china was as anyone with an America-First agenda would be, based on how it affects the US.
the only constant is change

民主❤❤❤中国,从日本,引进❤The concept of DEMOCRACY IS VERY MUCH VARIED IN DIFFERENT SOCIETY. ❤❤❤民主❤❤❤In CHINESE UNDERSTANDING IS (PEOPLES+MASTER).AS A RESULT OF TRANSLATIONS IN DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND COUNTRIES. THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD TO TALK ABOUT ❤ DEMOCRACY ❤IS BY SAYING A SPADE A SPADE. A SET OF NARRATIVES MUST BE DEFINED. NOONE IS IN THE SHOE OF OTHER PERSON.,,MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS IS THE RULE.,,,, DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS IS ANOTHER MATTER❤. NOONE CAN PUT THE FOOT INTO THE SHOE OF OTHER PEOPLE.
Hope your son could get well soon.
Can the American "Democracy" say that it has enhanced the lives of Americans when there are now so many homeless American citizens.
