it is very low. Have to turn up my speaker volume twice what I normally have it at.

I agree it’s good to not use default dead at negative HP rule. It’s much more common than exact 0.
What I like to use is the Death & Dismemberment aka Horrible Wounds system made/adapted by zordvil (or vil) for Mork Borg. You stop at 0 HP and negative bonus damage corresponds to a table by damage type. The higher values do result in instant death or when fail toughness roll, but lower has more effects similar to Broken.
