I love how Angeal sounds like he's reading the Wikipedia entry for "monster" instead of expressing his thoughts
I think and hope the original Japanese dialogue made more sense and it got weird through localization.

I could definitely see it working in a sorta sarcastic tone. Like he’s pointing out that he’s doing the typical monster things as a joke but deep down knows his reasons are genuine.
But everything is delivered with exactly the same tone so it just doesn’t work
@@toagradius8856 maybe in the original Japanese "monster" was more of a specific term which might works as a Japanese saying. Cause "revenge" and "world domination" despite being weird terms, they habe nothing to do with monsters.

It sounds like an excuse but this kinda writing really does just sound better in Japanese, coming from someone who speaks it. It doesn't help that the translation work and the voice acting are both very clumsy.

They COULD have done a rewrite, but then it wouldn’t be Crisis Core
Nomura actually had no writing credit on this game, if you can believe it. The voices and the timing really throw things off further too, make the already sort of disconnected dialogue there seem even more so.
I don't know why people don't just play in Japanese whenever dubs are this awful
I feel like most of the dumb bullshit in the Compilation of FF7 that people tend to blame on Nomura probably came from Kazushige Nojima. Nomura was more of an idea and general concepts guy, but Nojima was the scenario writer in charge of the execution which is where a lot of it fell on its face.
@FenixSeraph Both of them are masters at making the most basic interactions awkward and the most simple of plots convoluted as all hell. Put them together and you get FFVII Remake, the pinnacle of throwing just the _most_ into a story without thinking about the endeavor wholistically.

The original voice acting was so monotone and more controlled, this really does have that extremely over reactive tone. It's fucking hilarious

Everytime i see scenes from this game, whether being the remake or original, i just cant believe adults wrote this. It feels like the lead writer was actually an employee's 12 year old son.

I understand part of Vinny’s love for this game is nostalgia. But seeing this I totally think Vinny would actually like Kingdom Hearts, it’s the same stupid yet amazing writing.
There’s a Hard Times article that points out that every dumb thing that happens in KH actually happened previously in some other FF game, it’s just that you REALIZE how stupid it is once the Disney characters show up.

@@FROEZOEN When I say stupid but amazing it’s ironic enjoyment. Outside of 2 moments in the whole franchise that made me feel emotional, the whole series is like watching something like The Room. I’m amazed real people wrote some of the shit that happens.

never in my life have i ever watched or played any final fantasy game, all i know of them is what gets talked and joked about during other streams. this just feels like a fever dream, especially when the game looks polished like this 😂

I have like 1k hours in XIV and about halfway though I couldn't fucking take it anymore, and just turned on the Japanese voices and wallowed in my ignorance for the quality of the voice acting and just started speed reading text boxes, and yes there is some of this in XIV (although not anywhere as pronounced this) also they have English accents instead.

@@fugfiggen1536 I did not turn on english voices for the expansions so I will not debate that, that being said I have heard the voice acting for some of the raids/trials (ivalice raids in particular) and while theyre good, im perfectly content with my RPG weeb characters sounding like japanese people.

Jesus christ the voice acting director needs to be put off this. The voice direction here is abysmal, im so sad the VAs are gonna get shat on over someone who definetely didnt organize the dialogue properly. Makes the original dub sound like a miracle
It kind of sucks for the new voice actors, because they have to match the exact timing and mouth movements of the original dub which really hinders their performance.
@@jonathand.4088 thats no excuse lol every anime has that issue and almost every localized game. VAs are trained to match lips and they get multiple takes, and the audio can be further edited. This was a hack job, albeit a hilarious one.
While that's true, this scene played almost the same way in the original. It's pretty faithful in its badness lol
In a way, the updates to the voice direction make the dialog worse. Because it's modern higher effort dubbing with early to mid 2000's lines of dialog. It creates this bizarre dissonance that's weirdly fascinating to listen to. Like with the Star Wars Prequels, it doesn't matter how good of an actor you are, sufficiently bad dialog can never be saved.
@@vacuumboots I think it’s a bit unfair to compare it to anime. Anime typically has very simple and minimal mouth moment it’s either O or _ pretty easy to match. But when it comes to video game cutscenes with more detailed expressions it’s quite difficult to match

It’s not just the writing. The right delivery can make even bad writing work. Zack’s old actor was charming as hell. New actor doesn’t deserve the shit he got online. But his inexperience was apparent

Went back and rewatched Vinny react to this scene in the OG version and... yeah, the voice acting does sound better there than here, despite Angeal's monotonous delivery (which might have been what they were going for, he's so dry to compare to Zack's overzealous "puppy-like" nature/delivery).

I think the original voice actor presented the original script far better. Yeah it can be cheesy at times but who cares it’s a Japanese video game from 2007 just have fun with it. I personally loved this story and how they built Zack as a character and how they explored more into the lore from the FF7 universe.

If you guys don't know, the english cast for this game is completely recasted from the PSP original. The Japanese cast is the same I hear, but they also rerecorded all the dialogue over there too.
Its really strange how the original English cast for FF7 got completely recast at some point despite some VAs even saying they were keeping their roles in Remake like a couple years before it actually came out, but every other language got to keep it's cast.
Makes no sense to me why its just the English cast that got a complete recast.

It's a lot better in Japanese, but it's not as massive of a difference as in MGS4
