How To Remove Vintage Stronglight & TA Specialties Cranksets & Crank Puller Tools

- Most cranksets that are removed with a puller take a standard 22mm crank puller tool. Some notable exceptions are Stronglight cranks made up to 1982 which require a 23.35mm puller tool and also TA Specialties cranksets which need a 23mm puller tool. I compare the different crank puller tools and show the process of removing a Stronglight 93 Super Competition crank set.

Hey RJ. Where can one find a 23mm puller for my '71schwinn Sports Tourer TA Crankset?
Thank you, I’m glad people take the time to post stuff like this.
surely yours is one of the best youtube channels regarding the maintenance of bicycles, thx mate!
I'm loosing my mind over one Stronglight crank set, thanks a lot for this vid and overall massive respect! :)
Those TA cranks are a beauty! Those old pedals are also classic touring items. MKS now makes them and I am after a set for my own tourer.
OH yes I know this crank set! I had a right job getting one off the Claud Butler Road Bike Restoration Video! Wish I'd of seen this video before hand. Ha Ha thanks fella all the best Andy
I always learn something new from this channel. Thanks.
Always I have enjoyed your skills and advices. Thank you!
I’ve used a two armed puller with success on an old Stronglight crankset. I had to remove the chainrings before removing the drive side, but it saved me buying a special tool for a one off job (I’ve since sold the bike).
Great video, but one thing I don't understand is why you hold the crank puller 'nut' with another wrench while you tighten the bolt? why not just hold the crank itself?
Great Post!...Var make a crank puller that fits both T.A. and conventional cranks.Jim Stein makes a puller to fit Stronglight which I own.He also makes a puller to fit T.A. cranks...The tools needed are out there....
Interesting project because old bikes are charming.
excellent ! once more ; thanks, r j !
Nice!, I just picked up a 1975 Raleigh with the Stronglight 93 Crankset, I will get the 23.35mm crank puller
Thanks👍🚲🔧
Hi where can you find it? Thx
RJ the saviour
Nice one RJ. More French related videos!
Great video
You do have some really nice and quite rare lyotard berthet pedals. They inspired the modern white industries pedals as well as the mks urban platform
Nice details...
Thanks for the video. Do you know where I could buy a crank puller like the smaller one you have?
Took me forever to stop the video on the subliminal joke...nice one RJ!
Thanks for your response and link. Actually, I got it wrong; it's the drive side, i.e., the non-adjustable side of a Peugeot PX10, that presents a problem. The wrench size necessary to remove it is, I think, 38mm. But there is precious little metal to grab it. ---- Fortunately, I remembered to check Sheldon Brown's archives on the subject and think I can manage it (he suggests clamping the cup by running a bolt through it, and turning to tighten it (clockwise) from inside the BB (which turns the cup counter clockwise, looking from the outside). Again, many thanks.

Hi RJ where can I find the tool with 23.35 mm ? Thanksss!
Great video and any idea how to better remove a stuck crank, the reason i ask is on a bike i recently bought brand new i wanted to replace the crank got a better quality one but when i used the correctly sized puller tool it simply stripped the threads, after some googling it turns out this particular bike manufacturer uses a lock tight or glue on the crank.
What manufacturer uses glue on the crank? ruclips.net/video/jrpIoXxVyTs/видео.html
Integrated derailer hanger & lovely Stronglight crank for 10 bucks? I'm jealous! Interested to know a bit more about the frameset/if you intend to build it up... would be neat to see an RJtBG full-build video. Best of luck.
The seller thought it was a Gitane Tour De France. IDK.
Oh and the frame originally originally had a Simplex hanger which someone cut off and brazed on a Shimano hanger.
You have some Weinmann 'Red Dot' brake levers too.
My Sugino crank is polishing in just the same way as that Shimano. Obviously, my shoe, or sock is rubbing against the crank arm as I pedal, but I never notice it!
Intresting. ) But pls, dont eat dyes)
French standards are really a pain un the ass and I'm saying this as a frenchman
@Cjango Freeman Ahah come in France and you'll see how the way we talk isn't this pleasant anymore
Hi, do you have a link where I could purchase the 23.35 crank puller? Any info would be great. Thank you.
eBay.
To remove my Stronglight 93 crankset i loose bb axel bolts and ride (carefully) until crank’s gets loose too :)
found one that requires a 21mm puller SR apex cranks
Informative but you forgot to say who makes the 23 23.35 combo tool that you were about to use? Scoured ebay can't find it only find JA Stein 23.35 single tool.
I have no clue makes it. I went on ebay and searched and found it. www.ebay.com/itm/stronglight-specialites-t-a-removal-remover-crankset-Arm-Puller-vintage-Tool-new/152740762417?hash=item23900f1331:g:yDsAAOSwhwBZ33jr
There is another exception: a bike that I had years ago ! On the drive side, the opening was threaded but its diameter was way smaller than the "normal" tool, 15mm perhaps or less, I don't know. I never figured out how to pull it off (and I needed to ), never found a tool that fit or a similar thing on another bike. The non drive side was normal. Eventually, it all went to the bin.
The bike was "bicitime" brand, an obscure but probably italian brand from the 80s. A pretty bad bike, with weird parts but i had nothing else at the time.
I just named a couple of the most common exceptions.

대단히 감사함니다
Thanks, RJ, your presentations are always informative. But please stop telling us how little you pay for these vintage bikes and components. You're making me mad. But I'm happy for you.
French standards are really a pain in the ass and I'm saying this as a frenchman
Since I start restoring old bicycles I swear you French dude shit just to be annoying
Specialites is the spelling on my Traction Advantage cranks. Pronounced spee cee lee tees. Haha
Why stop with the drive side? My problem is with removing the cup from the other side. What the hell is the spanner size to remove it?
This video is removing the cranks. Both sides remove the same. Removing the bottom bracket is beyond the scope of this video. I have other videos on that. And the wrench varies with different bottom brackets.
Lol. After this video sold many 2in1 Stronglight crank pullers XD
10 bucks, wish i had that luck
Ceep it up
How does food coloring taste?
Blue.
hi
Funny little joke. I’m “dying” of laughter.
Mr. RJ; Need I view all your videos AGAIN, just to look for colorful, subliminal Dad-jokes?
Who ever was mad at him getting one for $10 would be furious at me, Got mine at the dump free lol
all mine requires is a 12mm bolt! lol
wow that's loud
I have the same ones ! I don't have the tool tho :'(
Get the tool. You can find them on ebay.
@@RJTheBikeGuy I was like fine I'll get it, it could be useful for future projects but I find it to be very expensive (25€ in France). Will it strip the threads 100% ? Do you have a vid on how to put it back together by any chance (if I don't ruin my it while removing it) ?
Oh well I just bought it for 22 bucks ahah
@@MarcAntoine01 I have no idea what you mean strip the threads. ruclips.net/video/ZDK6knIPhQg/видео.html
@@RJTheBikeGuy 2:52 that's what I'm scared about
The TA set I'm trying to get off a 15 mm bolt I know because I just took the bolts off
I once got cranks from a 30 year old road bike off without a crank puller.
Awesome joke at 6.30 Yesterday I accidentally swallowed some food coloring. The doctor says im okay, but I feel like I've dyed a little inside.
Always thought it was pronounced “special lights” instead of ‘specialties’. It’s spelled like the former. Cheers.

Are you rochester or buffalo? If Rochester, I would bring you beer in exchange for 5 mins with that crank puller!
I don't drink beer. And I don't have an open shop.
@@RJTheBikeGuy well if you are at seghahunda ever again (saw the sweatshirt, personally did a few dnfs on that race)I would at least like to shake your hand, I've learned a lot watching your videos.
@@dyaddaw I did the first one. And I did the year when like half the field DNFd because of the heat. Finished both times. I did the relay there one year too.
WTF!!! i though he will show us some tricks how to remove stronglite without stronglite extractor!!!
Sorry you dyed.
What are you, a tweeker? Stop moving your hands so much.
