Missed the Ship - Carnival Magic - Cozumel, Mexico - Aug. 12, 2014

  • An impromptu video filmed in HD but compressing and zooming compromised the quality - my apologies. Of course the message is clear, THE SHIP DOES NOT WAIT! I felt bad for them, especially for the little girls in tow but truly nearly 4,000 guests managed to be on the ship on time. I don't know what circumstances led them to miss the ship. When that happens, hopefully you have your passports so you can head to the airport; if not, your first stop, I suppose, is the embassy to get documents in order then go to the airport. At the airport they could have flown to our next destination (Grand Cayman - the following day), Jamaica where we'd be the day after Cayman or fly back to the home port of Galveston and wait on their luggage. No matter what it's costly but at least make sure you have your passport with you if you leave the ship. SIDE NOTE: If you're late because of an excursion you purchased through the cruise line they ARE supposed to wait on you. All that said, the trip was amazing and so was the Carnival Magic! Can't wait to do it again! I hope this video helps you plan to be back on the ship on time if you've got a cruise in your future... or what might happen if you show up late.

      Exactly, and if the tour bus you are on--a designated by the cruise line bus, and it is hit by another bus, and you CAN'T get back on time, then it does not fall in the category of "never being late". But fact is, you are right: the world does not revolve around you. IMO, in that case--as a side, they should offer you (the bus line) transport to the next port of entry so you can re-gain you seat on the ship

      @@chadbaker3117 it is passengers fault. dont blame anyone else because you are late minimum 30 minutes, but most likely for 45 or even full hour. every time you are being told to return at specific time, and every time that is exactly half a hour before ship departs time. so 30 min is there. every time when someone is late, ship stay for 30 min or even full hour waiting. so, what is your excuse?

    Some of my fellow cruisers thought I was a little too worried when I told them that I was going to plan on being back on board two hours before the deadline. It was my first cruise and I didn't want to get caught up in being late due to the time zone change, traffic, being tired from all the walking I planned to do, or something else. As it was I got back on board only 1.5 hours ahead of the deadline. The streets, shops, and museum were so crowded I cut short everything I had planned to do and I still missed the deadline I had set for myself. The last long walk to the ship is the one that seems to take forever after walking around all day. You really need to significantly lower your expectations of the amount of activities you can do within the time allowed at a crowded cruise stop.

    For anyone going for their first cruise: Ship's Time. You should get to know the concept of "ship's time"
    When you board the ship, the cruise director will come over the intercom and tell everyone to set their watches to ship's time. When you are on the sea, ship's time doesn't change when you cross time zones. Your watch or cell phone clock will likely change automatically to keep you in sync with the actual time ashore. This will get new cruisers in trouble. This causes people to return late because their cell clock says that, for example, is 2:30 when it's actually 3:30 ship's time. You'll get back just in time to see the ship sail away.

    • @dogsareme100
      @dogsareme100 Год назад

      Actually whether ship time and local time are the same depends on the captain last cruise I went on he had us change time zones to match local time, but on the other cruises ship time has always been local time from Fla ( where we left from.)

    I Love Cozumel...Always have a good time on the island and get back to the ship in time to position myself with a perfect view of the pier and a cold drink in hand. Then, as time to sail gets closer, we watch the pier runners scrambling to get back before it sails. Often we cheer them on, Incredible FREE entertainment. I can do that because I have been late myself.

  • @HMIslander
    @HMIslander 6 лет назад +28

    Having been on several cruises the cut-off time to be back is always advised several times before people disembark. And always when almost ready to sail on to the next port there are stragglers running to the ship running late. It really isn't all that difficult to manage your time and if they can't organise themselves better then they deserve to be left behind!!

      I've heard one cruise line (Royal Caribbean I think) will tell the port agents to search the bars for you if you booked an excursion through them specifically. They then pile everyone into a stretched golf cart and make a beeline for the dock. Another passenger showed what happens when stuck in traffic and the excursion was done through the ship's agency: they sent a bus to search for everyone and drove them back to the dock. Again, this is ONLY if the passenger booked the shore excursion through the ship's onboard office, not a third party.

We did not break away from a large number of other cruisers yet we didn't purchase the cruise excursion. 1.5 hrs left, we were at the port in sight of the ship. I can't wander off into place that I don't know anyone. The cruise excursion passengers were 30 mins late as they were stuck in a traffic jam but, that's a 'cruise excursion' and Yes, the ship waited😜.

    They also could pay for a port authority to take them to the ship on a boat. I had people from my group pay to be taken to the ship that pulled away last year in Grand Cayman. The ship waits 45 minutes after the announced time before pulling the last ropes. People go to the bars (Carlos and Charlie’s, Senior Frogs) and lose track of time. Happens more times than you think.

    On your iPhone, go to Settings->General->Date & Time and turn off Set Automatically. That will ensure that the time on your phone doesn't get reset automatically upon entering another time zone. Do this before embarkation.

    I am booked for my 15th cruise departing Feb. 3, 2019. I booked this cruise on Sept. 18, 2018. Carnival provided information as to the time of arrival and departure for each port involved in this cruise. This information was attached to the statement showing the itemized charges for the cruise. In other words.....If you booked your cruise yesterday or two years ago, YOU were given this information. How could anyone say that they did not know when the ship would sail? Only the same nitwits who are always late for the muster drill. I understand that sometimes bad things happen to good people.

    we went on an excursion in Cozumel the ruins of Tulum we were really late getting back it was dark and I think well after five thirty. The excursion was great the ship waited but it was the fastest Ive ever gotten on a ship in port. Pretty much threw you on board to get you on. Only sad part was not getting to shop the first time in Cozumel so we had to go back on a cruise. If I hear the ships horn sound a bit before time to leave I get a place on deck to watch pier runners. Usually a pretty good crowd cheering them on

    I was told that in Cancun, one cruise line tried to be nicer about this and called multiple taxis to search every bar near the beach and round up all their passengers 30 minutes early to make sure they made it back. I don't know what brand it was.

    I know for a fact that Royal Caribbean will wait a little while for passengers. I have heard them make calls and calls looking for missing passengers. And in the past I road Carnival and yes, they leave passengers on the peer.

    Yes, once the lines are "cast off" you are not going to be able to get back onboard, probably even if the ship hasn't moved a single metre away from the pier. It's like once the gate people move the passenger bridge away from the aircraft, you aren't getting onboard. The pushback with the aircraft tug is set to begin and they won't delay it.

      That happened on a flight. The guy sitting in front of us got off the plane at a short layover then somehow did not get back on before we left. We were on the runway and freaking went back for him. Had to wait for a gate then wait for a spot to take off. Got in 40 minutes late despite the pilots hustling to make up time. Everyone was pissed at this genius.

    I often wondered if there's another boat in port that's heading to the exact port that the boat they missed is going to? If there's an empty room, I'm sure it would be cheaper than flying the whole family to the next port. Get that boat to radio their boat to inform them. Has anyone heard of someone doing that?

    There was a required harbor pilot on board that liner to navigate it out. At some point, a small vessel would retrieve him from the liner. They could have arranged to bring the stragglers out at the same time. With a severe penalty of course...

    Hey, if they tell you the ship is pulling out at 6:47pm, that doesn't mean 7:00pm. It pulls out at 6:47pm. Lesson learned for them. Grab a flight (if you can get one) to the next port or go home. I was on a cruise in 2005 and the same thing happened to a couple. They had to catch a flight to the next island.

    We watched people running to the ship on our last cruise this past January & almost got left. Now I understand that 'things happen' &/or if it's a situation where an excursion booked through that cruise-line is running late for whatever reason but otherwise, on a cruise ship, where it's effecting how many other people not to mention the ships timeline to get into the next port(s) on time... You just don't do that. It's just rude, it's disrespectful & you're basically saying to not just the other passengers but also the crew that 'my time is more important than yours'.

    After 9 cruises. I am always back at least 1 hour before the ship sails, if it is a tender port , at least the third last tender, don’t risk it, always book longer tours with the cruise line, if the ship sails without the tour group it’s their fault, they must arrange the airfare and costs. On my first cruise the ship waited 3 hours for a bus of passengers only because they booked through the company, otherwise we would have gone. Long story short don’t push your luck.

      Some of them forget to switch times on their watch. Some take excursions not with the ship and if they're late, ship doesn't wait. Some go out on their own but something happens like traffic, road blockage from construction or even an accident, etc. and they can't get to the port. And a small percentage are busy shopping or drinking at the local village and just simply forget the time.

      mightysun89 stop being such a narrow minded twit. sometimes it's completely out of their control, what if their tour bus broke down on the other side of the island? or in my case (I almost missed the ship literally made it back while they where pulling up the gangplank) -my dad and I had rented jet skis in Nassau and these big chunks of floating seaweed got sucked up into them and they stalled out, we where exploring one of the little out islands like half mile off and around the coast so the place that rented them to us had no idea we where immobilized, we had to flag down a little fishing boat and pay the guy 20 bucks to bring us back to the beach... sometimes things happen out of a person's control.

      mightysun89 I was late returning to the boat in cozumel but I was on a charter fishing trip booked through the cruise, they waited 30 min. for us because we booked through them , if you book an excursion on your own they will not wait for you , the charter captain got us back late and there was nothing we could do about it

    They can't dock again because it's expensive and complicated and there isn't time. But they can stop at sea quite easily, lower their dock, and recover you that way. Hire a water taxi and chase the ship! Keep in mind that cruise ships are very fast, and not required to stop, it's completely up to the captain.
