Yes. In the video I'm spinning the tool the wrong direction for that particular string bundle. I was concentrating so much on the getting the ending illustrated I didn't realize until long after I posted the video I'd laid the serving on in the wrong direction. The easiest method to determine which direction of rotation you should lay the serving is illustrated really well by this guy's video. (Skipping to the test): ruclips.net/video/50TF2sM-1UQ/видео.html
Whichever direction you are serving in, right to left, or left to right, and regardless of the string's build rotation (clockwise or counter clockwise) when you are laying serving the string twists should be getting tighter in front of the bobbin in the direction you are laying the serving. In the video I'm using the wrong rotation of the serving tool. If that string was loose in the video (but the eyes not allowed to rotate)you would see the twists in the string in the direction of travel that I am serving getting looser. If you watch that guy's video I linked to in my previous comment, his demo illustrates that perfectly.
Correct. Technically you want to wrap the serving in the same direction that the bow string is twisted. Should be effectively tightening the twist in the bow string as you lay it (the serving) down.
I MUST DECLARE A SIMPLE TRUTH TO ALL NEWBIE BOWSTRING D.I.Y.ers, "Your search for serving tutorials and how to securely tie them has FINALLY COME TO AN END!" This is THE ONE AND ONLY, SUPER EASY TO UNDERSTAND, AND BEST WAY TO LEARN HOW TO TIE A SERVING SECURELY. AS FAR AS THE SERVING GOES- THIS IS THE ONLY VIDEO THE NEWBIE NEEDS. You can use the rest of your energies and efforts on other areas of your diy bow project. Thankyou wheeliepete for blessing the newbies with this simple and quick superior video. Your time invested in this video production is recognized sir.
After an evening of frustration trying to follow the instructions in a book I turned to youtube in the hopes of something to help me. 10 minutes later and I was finished. THANKYOU so much for posting this.
Taught this by my college team coach in the '70's but rusty..great tutorial. I use this also on my boat lines. No needles or meticulous fancy stitching, but perfectly functional.
Thank you for posting this video. I'm in Australia and my nearest bow shop is a 6 hour drive each way. Theses instructions helped me tie my peep back in place when it came loose and got me back out in the field. Much appreciated.
Seven years (and a global pandemic) later - and I'm only 2 minutes into this video - I tip my hat to you @WheeliePete . This is a beautiifully concise and clear "How To" explanation and demonstration.
Great video. Just reserved the string on my Olympic recurve. Also did a dual served nock point for the first time. You can teach an old dog new tricks. Lol I have enjoyed all aspects of Archery for over 40 yrs.
Very much appreciated and that drawing is really good. I need to renew the serving on a crossbow string and will add some more rounds to start and end (maybe 10), but it should be pretty much the same. Cheers from Germany, where (repeating) crossbows are the only legal and most affordable option for home defense.
Needed this knot for rehairing a violin bow. It is used to tie off the ends of the horsehair at the proper points to prevent unravelling and using a clean flat knot. Nicely explained. Thank you.
I'm an archery director at a Scout camp, and due to COVID, havent had to do this in 2 years so I needed a refresher before I taught the kids how to do it. Your explanation was perfect, thank you!
I'm a bow tech at a sports store in GA. I've been a certified archery instructor for about 4 years, and teaching people how to correctly serve a bowstring has been kind of difficult... Until I found your video. This has helped me out a lot and I recommend your video to people who can't quite get the knots down. Thank you for the great videos!
+Josh Barnes Thanks Josh, Hey, you might want go read the comments I just updated in the video details section. After watching this video again for the first time in a long time, I realized that I'm laying down the serving in the opposite rotation direction of what I should be. I was so caught up in trying to get a good camera angle I didn't notice my rotation. You always want to lay serving in the same rotation that would tighten the string bundles together in the direction you are laying the serving. I should be going in the opposite direction on that particular string due to the direction of the string twist.
@@WheeliePete i figured this was the technique and it’s so simple. I figured it was the same as how I tied in my peep, but the visual representation of a knot sketch and the large string were great visuals for learning and confirming I knew what I was doing
this helped tremendously every other video you're trying to pay attention in the instructors hands are all in the way I'm a simple man I asked a simple question I want a simple answer Nailed it right on the head!
Another great video sir. Havnt picked up a bow and arrow for many a year. But I could see this way of beginning and ending a wrap useful in a variety of other areas. Thank you and have a blessed day.
I took my first bow to the range to sight it in today and noticed the string fraying. Not knowing what it was, I asked someone what happened and what to do. I was informed I would need to go to the shop to have my bow "re-served". Turns out your video saved me the trip and fixed my bow. Thanks!
Finally, someone who can produce a professional quality, concise, video. Excellent narration and demonstration. Please make more instructional videos!! Thanks.
This is the best video online for serving bowstrings. I have referred to this many times to refresh my memory how to do this technique. I've been teaching archery for over 10 years and I use this all the time this technique works I use it constantly thank you so much for posting this video
Pete, U're a good man to share your knowledge and take the trouble to post it here. I appreciate what U're doing. Keep up the good work Bro. May god bless U. TQ.
This was very helpful. Thankyou 👍 I used the information to wrap my Stiletto hammer handle which is very slippery when brand new. I also bedded the line in some waterproof wood glue. Now my ten year old hammer has a brand new handle with a very nice looking grip on it.
That's the beauty of this technique in that you can apply it to lots of other things. I use it a lot for wrapping handles on walking sticks with paracord.
Wow thank you for this i will be trying this method on my crossbow string tomorrow your method seems to be stronger than others i tried. Hopefully it will hold better.
Excellent video my friend! I love how you used the larger post and string for the demo. I do a lot of serving and use this method even on my cables in the section that comes in contact with the string guides on my bows.
Thank you for the clear and easy to see materials! I watched 4 videos before this where I couldn't see anything, this was perfectly legible and well explained.
Fantastic video, sometimes I think people try to over teach and complicate things, but this was very well explained with plenty of visuals, thanks for your time with this in putting this video together!!
Woah! This video made serving very easy to learn. I tried serving a thing yarn on my pen and it only took about 5 minutes to complete. Other videos looked lengthy and were a bit vague in explaining the process, but using a pole and a bigger string was creative as it was informative. Thank you very much.
Oopppps accidentally hit done. Lol anyways I have always paid to have my strings done and always figured serving a string was for ninjas only! You took the mystery right out of it. Your idea of using the para cord like string thing onto a yellow PVC pipe was brilliant !!!! I am going to subscribe right after I'm done figuring how to "LIKE" the video. Very instructive. Very well done. WP I hope you keep taking all the mystery out of archery. I am going to view your videos now!!!
This video is awesome. Turned out perfect the first time using the same tools I purchased from watching your video. Very easy while following your video. Thanks very much
Thanks for your kind words. Please feel free to share this video around to any archery websites or social media groups you visit. The more positive feedback and subscribers I get the more I'm encouraged to make more videos like this. Thanks -Pete
I just wanted to give you a wholehearted THANK YOU for this. I'm about 2 months into archery, and really enjoy learning how to work on my own things. This video has been immensely helpful for tying in my peeps and control cables for my drop away rests. when i first had them done by a shop, they tied knots, and just did not look nice at all.
Bought a new bear '59 Kodiak and within a few minutes goofed up the serving while adjusting a nock set......your instruction and recommendations made it possible for me to save the string and serve it up. I used the AAE tool and .019 Halo Braided thread......came out great......thanks so much!!
WheeliePete, I have to say that I saw a few video's on this subject on RUclips and this one is the most informative with super clear visual references to do this job, & on top of that you also helped me choose the tools I need .A super Thank you and God bless you for your help.
Thank you! That was absolutely brilliant on how to teach that cleanly using the yellow pipe and black string, then going back and forth to the string/serving. Thank you thank you thank you!!
I'm new to archery but have a crossbow and a horsebow that had a few strings that needed new servings. This video was perfect. First try and the servings looked better than the factory ones. Thanks.
This was a perfect instructional video, you left nothing out and explained everything as well as it can be and I am a fan. Thank you. I was some trouble with my serving but not anymore.
Great video, I recently started shooting. along the way I wanted to learn more about my bow, as I always say "more you know about your equipment" the better you can handle them. Beside paying someone to do something I can is not on my book. thank you for sharing.
Great video! You have a good voice for making these video's. Good thing to focus on the start and end of the serving. The use of a rod is great, at my club we use a rod as well for showing how to tie nocking points.
Hey man! I realize this video is old, but just wanted to say thank you so much for making this video. While in the middle of a pandemic, I started getting back into archery and had my first serving start to fray apart under the nock. Seeing as no archery shops are open right now, I thought I was going to have to wait a full week to get a new bow string or a serving jig and serving string. I just unraveled the loose end of the server off and essentially made two separate servings into one continuous one with the loose end. Now I can get back to practicing again without waiting for that new string! Using the larger dowel and the cord for presentation purposes worked extremely well. Thank you so much for posting this!
I second this comment. I am essentially doing the same thing - getting laid off this fall and haven't been out with a bow in 20 years. Trying to get equipped for low cost, this video taught me a valuable skill and saved me some time at a bow shop. Thanks Pete.
very excellent video! Thanks! I have a longbow on which the serving had come loose at the bottom. Your instructions were easily clear enough to allow me to re-serve the string. I will be looking into that AAE serving jig too.
Amazing detail and explanation. There's a lack of traditional equipment at archery shops nowadays and I can never get the correct length bowstring for my longbow. I'll be starting to make my own flemish strings once I get my hands on the bowstring material and serving thread I just ordered. Thanks for posting this video.
Hey WheeliePete - great video - thanks for doing this. As you stated, nowhere else is there a video with a large cord like this to clearly explain what is going on. You cannot follow this if done with actual thread and standard camera. Nice Job!
Thank you for this video. You're right, it's hard to find a detailed video on this. Most videos have the same view I get at a pro shop. They go way too way fast and they assume that you can see and understand exactly what they are doing. Thanks for this simplified and clear video. Much appreciated.
Thanks, I always found it hard to start off a serving like that without it unravelling but now I see how it's done.... by pulling on the tail end, so easy when you're shown how. :) I used to pass the end through the string to get it held but now I don't need to de-string the bow. Makes it easier and quicker. Thanks very much.
Great video helped me fix some of my loose serving without having to pay a $40.00 bench fee for something you proved is easy and fun to do myself. Thanks again and happy shooting.
Only just started making my own strings, for my scout group, and really struggled with the finishing. This video makes it so much simpler to understand. Many thanks WP.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I served the string I made on my daughter's homemade bow using your instructions. I also used the same method to re-wrap the grip with paracord. Using the stick and rope was brilliant!
Def really informative and very detailed. I've been an archer for awhile but always let a professional do it for me. Now that my kids are growing I figured I better learn these things myself so I can teach them to my children. Sweet video and keep on making them for the rest of us who lack the knowledge.
Friend, you have no idea how happy i am right now. KNowing nothing much about bows, only have one for LARPing, its been difficult to tie on the (which i now know is called) serving right, without it just loosing up on me again. But with your video, on first try I just tied my serving back on really nicely, and i hope it keeps. Many thanks!
Thanks very much for this video. I'm a mediaeval re-enactor, doing a lot of archery, and I've been having trouble fixing the servings on my bowstrings. This has helped massively (although I'm not someone who gets to use a serving tool- darn 12th century technology cap!)
Thanks to this video, I just tied my very first serving to fit my Trophy Taker flip down rest string to the buss string. This knot looks better than the ones the bow tech used to fit my peep sight!!! Suffice to say that those servings will be being replaced very soon. THANK YOU!!!!
Awesome vid, the yellow PVC and rope was an excellent idea. I've done two servings now without a jig (didn't have one). I was able to snug it enough just holding the spool in my hand, I think...at least for my purposes. I wanted to basically create a clamp point on my string to better hold the peep in place and just hand wrapping snuggly has worked well.
shouldn't you always serve on the direction that tightens the serving around the string? btw, love the demo with bigger materials.
WheeliePete you spin the tool in the same direction as the string was made in.
Yes, cut it short and then melt it into wrap.
Correct. Technically you want to wrap the serving in the same direction that the bow string is twisted. Should be effectively tightening the twist in the bow string as you lay it (the serving) down.
Finally find this video. The best tutorial video about bowstring serving on RUclips!
What a great video for 9 years old, better focused and edited than many today. Perfect explanation, thanks!

STIZEN9 I agree this explains it perfectly. I'm gonna practice with rope and a broom handle.

Best ever video on serving. Bigger materials in contrasting colour is the key. You, my friend , are a good teacher.
This is the first video (of many that I have watched) that defines the serving process clearly and simply. Great job, thanks.
Great video. Just reserved the string on my Olympic recurve. Also did a dual served nock point for the first time. You can teach

Needed this knot for rehairing a violin bow. It is used to tie off the ends of the horsehair at the proper points to prevent unravelling and using a clean flat knot. Nicely explained. Thank you.
It is amazing how clear and easy you make this look. You cleared up any and all confusion in 4 minutes, best video of the subject on all youtube.

Not only a very cool technique, but also a crystall clear video.
Thanks, you saved my 80lb crossbow.

Best video on this topic I have found. The large yellow rod helps emencely. Thanks!👍😁👌
There’s so few helpful things on the internet for serving thank you so much!🙏
That AAE serving jig is a fantastic tool. And at under $20 you just can't beat it.
Thanks, the size of the pipe and the string, and the contrasting colors, made it even more clear.
A+ Video. Excellent instruction. A must see for every archer, and a skill that could save your bacon in the field!

plywoodguy99 Glad I was able to help. It's a good feeling being able to fix your own stuff.
Yet again you've helped me replace the serving on my bow. 😊
That was the best explanation & method I've seen so far in explaining the start & finish of the serving. Thanks WheeliePete!!

Although I already knew how to it I enjoyed your vid and thought it very clear and simple, keep up the good work.
A big thanks to you for a very helpful video and also thanks to all you people that take time to help out. Shane
Only just started making my own strings, for my scout group, and really struggled with the finishing. This video makes it so much simpler to understand. Many thanks WP.
Perfect explained and camera work! I think now I understood what to do!
Thank you for making such a clear instructional video
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I served the string I made on my daughter's homemade bow using your instructions. I also used the same method to re-wrap the grip with paracord. Using the stick and rope was brilliant!
Def really informative and very detailed. I've been an archer for awhile but always let a professional do it for me. Great job 👏 thank you! Gosh you are the only one who knows how to make a good video with details!
The best video ever. Thank you.
Thanks! Really concise and well edited, shot, and explained. Really appreciate it.
This is literally the best video I’ve seen on this, so easy! You just saved me a trip to the bow shop. Thanks!
Thanks a lot! Your instructions has help me and my family learning the basics of archery. Yesterday my 11 y son made his first serving thanks to you:)
Thanks to this video, I just tied my very first serving to fit my Trophy Taker flip down rest string to the buss string.
This knot looks better than the ones the bow tech used to fit my peep sight!!! Suffice to say that those servings will be being replaced very soon.
THANK YOU!!!!
THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I've taught myself how to do this from watching other videos, but this is absolutely the best.
Subscribed. The larger example is really helping me to.understand the process. Thanks
Just what I was looking for a clear to the point demonstration cheers mate keep it up :)
This is the best video I have ever seen on this. THANKS
Best video on the topic I found.
Awesome vid, the yellow PVC and rope was an excellent idea.
I've done two servings now without a jig (didn't have one). I was able to snug it enough just holding the spool in my hand, I think...at least for my purposes. I wanted to basically create a clamp point on my string to better hold the peep in place and just hand wrapping snuggly has worked well.
awesome, thanks for the trick, very high quality video, this is clear, not too fast, detailed, don't need anything more !
