Paint along with me and create a wonderfully dramatic stormy sky in less than 5 minutes! This video tutorial is filmed in real time, I have only paused it for drying time, it took about 4 minutes to paint using just 3 colours: raw sienna, ultramarine blue and paynes grey.
This technique is suitable for beginners to try, the secret is to relax, enjoy, have all your materials to hand and don't worry about making mistakes, after all, as the great Bob Ross said, we never make mistakes with painting, we just have happy accidents!
I hope you give this a try, with any colours you like, and enjoy the fast and loose approach to painting a stormy sky. If you like this video, please give me a thumbs up, and if you aren't subscribed to my channel, please click the subscribe button

Lois , you have a brilliant style and a superb, gentle and encouraging method of teaching . Well done , what a gift .
Stunning
Well done! Beautiful
Wow!! Amazing!! 👍🍀✨
It's beautiful.
That's a great sky, I love those in real life too
Heartbreak Art thanks very much, skies are my favourite thing to paint 💕😊
fantastic!
You make it look so easy!
My goodness you make this look so easy!!! It's gorgeous! I love the sky and ocean, I take so many cloud pictures for reference its ridiculous, but I can't help it, they're all so different and so glorious!! So my dream is to paint them, well. But I don't always get what's in my head, or in my photo, on the paper as I'd like....so..... I definitely keep trying. I do think I over work it sometimes, trying too hard and then it's a blah mess. I want so badly to paint loosely, but I always get to involved in the details. But I'm definitely going to try this, as you have, small pallette, paint quickly and don't mess with it...but even more, to be positive like you and be ok with what happens and learn from it and try again. I definitely fail there and get very annoyed with myself for failing to do what I intended...when I know good and well that one of my favorite things about watercolor is that it moves and blends and has a life of its own...sometimes good, sometimes not what I planned...but I must remember to look at it all as learning and try new things until I find what I'm looking for :) I definitely need to look into a hake brush. May I ask what makes them so different from say a large flat? I'm sure that's a stupid question, but I've just been teaching myself the last several years and can only paint when pain allows, so its slow going. Especially for my favorite subjects:) flowers and trees, those are easy as I love to do a drawing, either loose or detailed, and then some watercolor. I've come to art late in life due to self doubt, then a need to find something to help with my physical and resulting emotional issues pushed me past that doubt, and, art is the best therapy, well, it is when you don't get too down on yourself about it and remember why you do it. This reminded me of that, I truly appreciate that :) thank you!!
Just a gorgeous painting!!
Fantastic painting 🎨🖌️
Very nice. The wet in wet makes the paint run just like clouds do.
Lovely🥰I think I’ll give it a go, as you say.
Love your style....xx
Brilliant! Thank YOU so much! This is inspirational……thank you so much for sharing your talents so generously. 😍👏🎨👏
Love your skies. The best on youtube
Nicely done, Lois, thank you.
Thanks Colin, I'm really pleased you enjoyed it. I mean to do a video on simple dry brush foregrounds and softly diffused distant trees at some point soon as per your request!
Thank you for excellent instruction.
Very nice, thanks and best of luck.
Well done...as always
🖒Thanks, Lois. Terrific. I love skies that tell a story. I've been a big fan of Dave Usher's skies, and now yours also. Great tip keeping the foreground simple when the sky is the story. Also, thank you for your generous replies to other's comments on this video.
Thanks Thom, I always try to make either the sky or the forground the focus rather than both. I don't always succeed though ;-)
Instablaster.
Love your style . You relax me. Just subscribed to your channel.❤️
Wow that’s really easy looking to do! I have got to remember to add the golden/ warm tones before the blues and grays. I have been doing that backwards.
I Love Sky's. Wonderful .I must Sub !! Thanks
Inspiring as usual Lois I’m catching up on your older tutorials 🥹
Wow 😳
another great video...
Thanks Rick!
Lovely thank you 😊
Great video Lois - will definitely give this a try
Matthew Taylor Thanks Matthew! Let me know how you get on, the technique takes a bit of practice and is a lot easier to achieve using cotton paper, as the paint stays wet for longer allowing you to blend more easily 😊
@@LoisDavidsonArt ok i like
Lois, you make it look so easy!! I will have to have a go. Thank you xxx
Keely Lambert I just takes a bit of practice and not giving up if and when it doesn’t quite work out, theses times are when we learn the most! Please feel free to ask me any questions here 💕💐💐
@@LoisDavidsonArt thank you. I think i use too much water for skies and they just go pale with no defined colours 😂😂. I think i need to swap my mop brush for a hake. I see you only use a very small pallette and i think i need to reduce mine. Can you suggest a small pallette for me to use for practice please? Xxx
You've probably hit the nail right on the head there, I'd recommend experimenting with wet on wet skies using strong colour, almost straight out of the tube. Of course sometimes you need very watery washes and glazes too, but being bold enough to uses strong paint where needed is very important! I only ever uses a few paints: ultramarine blue, sometimes cerulean & prussian blue but in moderation, paynes grey, raw sienna, burnt sienna, light red, burnt umber, raw umber, lemon yellow and alizarin crimson. I mix my own greens from the paints listed! Choose a similar limited palette and really experiment with all the colours you can make from them, using just a few simple colours keeps the painting harmonious!
@@LoisDavidsonArt thank you so much for the help. I shall let you know how it goes xxx
Also i only have pan paints at the minute. I think i need to swap my water to pigment ratio 😂😂 xx
Very clever
*OK you're Chanel is good*
Just beautiful and you make it look so smooth and easy! I'm curious why you prefer hake and flat brushes to mops and rounds for a lot of your paintings.
Thanks!
❤️
Lois, you a great touch but how do you stop paints not turning green?
Hi Lois, Do you sometimes use an hair dryer to go faster or do you prefer to let it dry naturally and why? Thank you for all these videos.
beautiful, but the top was cut off : (
yes top was cut off, but also you could "feel" how the person, the paint, the paper, all communicated
Lovely sky, are you in Cornwall? I love it there, visited a couple years ago.
Thanks! I'm in Brighton, but sometimes go on holiday to Cornwall
louis målningsteknik är mycket sevärd
How did you prevent the yellow and blue from turning green thanks
Raw sienna is more brown than yellow and rarely makes green
Lois, my hake brushes are new and when using the edges are scraggily and not smooth like yours. Do they need breaking in more or am I doing something wrong.
Some hakes are ragged and never get a chisel edge, I use Pro Arte Ron Ranson hakes mostly as they are reliable
@@LoisDavidsonArt thank you! I have ordered a Pro Arte! thank you. So enjoy your channel.
Constable said the same.
Thank you but I hope I could see the top!
Superb - I've lost the confidence to pick up a brush
Maybe give it another try, just have fun and experiment, no pressure!
Man mine lookrd like trash i tried 5 times cuz i need it for school but it wont work:((((
Keep trying, but each time look carefully at it and try to work out what didn't work, and then focus on practicing that part the next time. Tell yourself you can do it and you will!
You always have a lot of sirens in your videos. Must live close to them.
I used to live in a large city near the main route for ambulances and fire engines!
Great a deEsser would really improve the audio. It cuts down the harsh s's. Lovely little video though. Thanks
Louder please, for old people, others can turn it down, but we can't turn it up. Thanks for your nice work.
Why did you shorten the view, we don’t see the top of the paper?
Because this was one of my first videos a few years ago when I didn’t know how to film properly
Did you ever paint a storm on a canvas?
Such a shame the camera angle cut the top of the paper off!
too heavy
