I took advantage of the sale on the R-50M's for $299, i picked them up today and I am amazed, how they sound crossed over with a sub, ports plugged, So now i have my Kg5.2's that i have replaced the drivers on, my Black F-300's, (Andrew rolls eyes) bought Discounted, with matching rears and center channel, I love all my Klipsch speakers. I spend all my free time listening to music.

I own a pair of the R-820Fs and have been very pleased with them.
I primarily drive them with a Reisong A10 12w tube amp. I occasionally use my integrated Pioneer VSX-LX303 or my Kenwood KA-2500 (thank you, it's really great!) but they pale in comparison to the performance of the Reisong.
When I first bought them, I toed them in to my listening position and was super pleased with their sound. They are positioned two feet from the back and side walls.
Some 18 months later with no changes, someone recommended that I aim them straight down my room because, I was told, it will open the soundstage. I was skeptical but made the change. Night and day difference!
I immediately began to experience a breadth, width, and depth I hadn't previously heard. Somehow there was sound behind me!
The audio experience was like nothing I'd ever enjoyed at any time in my life. I can only imagine what is possible with better gear!
Anyway, it sounds like the R-800Fs are inferior to the R-820Fs, which is really too bad for a next gen speaker.
I bought my 820s new for $1,000 for the pair and to this day am pleased with my purchase. They can be found for half that price now without too much effort. If you ever get a chance to hear or even buy the 820s, do it. I think you'll hear something from them that sounds like it's absolutely missing from the 800s.
    Cheers!
    John

What do you mean with aiming them down to your room? Thanks!

    • @Hi-FiBBQ
      @Hi-FiBBQ 12 дней назад

@lpromer4796 Sorry I wasn't more clear. My listening room is a rectangle with my listening positron roughly in the middle, both left to right and forward and back.
I previously had the speakers toed-in to my center listening position roughly 11 feet from the speakers.
I have since aimed the speakers straight down the room so they're parallel to the walls and the shape of the room.
So, they are not longer aimed at my center listening position, which opened up the sound stage in my room in a way I didn't think possible if they were aimed any direction other than at me in my center listening position.
      Thanks!

I appreciate the constructive/honest review! I got my pair of 820s for half off ($299ea) in Nov 2021. The rest of the comments are correct, sales are pretty common for this line. After positioning them just right, (and pairing them with my older Klipsch KG2s) I was very pleased - My receiver also supports front A and B speakers so I think that with everything set up it sounds pretty good! I was curious and knocked on mine during the segment about the space in the cabinet, and I completely understand. Haha

I've been saying for awhile now to avoid the reference line and only look at reference premiere. For newer models. Klipsch has done a marketing move that in my opinion was not in favor of consumer's. They killed the synergy line and made it the reference line. And the old reference is now reference premiere. While this would be acceptable as a starting point considering the used market it makes things highly confusing as to which models are worth your attention and which are not. I personally fell for this when purchasing a new set of towers but returned them after only 30 min of listening and purchased the rp-280f which are very similar to the rp8000f. Great review!

I used to have R-820F, which are predecessors to R-800F, and all you said here is applicable to R-820Fs as well. I could not live with them and I sold them after a less than a year of ownership. Muddy bass, tweeters piercing my ears, total lack of midrange, cabinet resonance, narrow soundstage.... That makes me think that Klipsch just changed the looks a bit, but essentially those are the same speakers. I tried 2 different amplifiers (Rotel and Marantz), and I could not make them sound any good. But I must admit that they sounded very differently with different amps, but still sound was lacking for me. Speaker positioning did not make a difference either. To be honest, I am happy I got rid of them. Sorry Klipsch.

Great review as always. According to their respective spec sheets, the Klipsch R800F is 43 x10.9 x 17.5 inches. While the JBL the Stage a190 is 42.1 x 10.2 x 14.6. So the Klipsch is actually larger than the JBLs even if they don't seem as massive.

I haven't heard those particular KLIPSCH Tower Speakers. But, you brought up an interesting point. The boominess problem with towers - in general - is something that I noticed from time to time. I think lots of it has to do with room interaction as opposed to cabinet resonance exclusively. What I found from time to time is that the best place for 'sound staging' is not the best place for bass - or vica versa. Going with a stand mounted/bookshelf speaker along with a subwoofer seems to mitigate the room problem to some extent. You can place the main speakers where they give the best music or movie sound. And, you can place the subwoofer in the room where it gives whatever kind of bass that you like. Also, I discovered that even towers need a subwoofer anyways in many cases.

At first I was disappointed with them - bass heavy and a bit veiled … but, after a couple of months of daily use, they have settled in nicely and are punching well above their price point (keep ‘em away from the wall). Excellent review and info !! Fine comments here too. Speaker drivers are so complex - often the cone materials alone account for tone and color, the frame basket in resonance and dynamics, and electro magnetics can effect articulation with gaps in linearity. I once compared several similar 12" drivers in side by side test unmounted in open baffle form for tone and color. What a surprise that test was.

I actually have some experience with the older R-820f. I purchased an open box pair for my father on a deal. I actually thought they sounded pretty good for the price. I agree the bass is a bit coloured, and yes the mids are a bit scooped out, but on my living room integrated (NAD C316) they sounded really good. I will say that they are VERY Dependant on the amplifier though. Once we hooked them up to my dad's old Pioneer VSX-9500s, it was AWFUL. I also damped the horns with a rubberized wrap on. Those plastic horns became well tempered and concise. Which were using crispy Crites custom tweeters. Resonance be gone! I mean... I totally understand if you don't want acoustic treatment in ur room, but after I put up some cheap polyester panels on their first reflection points, my r-610f's improved greatly in their detail and sweet airiness, even though they already had a ton of clarity. And what is up with people wanting good deep bass from a speaker when whatever bass they have below 60-80Hz is NOTHING compared to crossing them over to subwoofers? Assuming the sub isn't terrible of course.

That happens any time a new speaker comes out. They gotta get rid of stock. The likelihood is that sales of the new model suffer until that older model is no longer available.

Any chance you'll get a look at the RF-7 III series? Though they're both floor standing towers, I'm curious if they compare to the Forte IV?

    • @homeaudiobasics

Fortes and RF7 III have similar midbass punch and both are very detailed.
However the rf7s have a midrange dip that the Fortes don't.

I have a pair of RP-8000s and I was over the moon. So when my brother was looking for a pair of speakers I recommended Klipsch. His budget could only afford him a pair of R620-f. He really liked the sound as I am sure it was a significant upgrade from his previous experience. But to me it was really terrible and all the tinkering we did with settings could not save it in my opinion. He was happy and I wasn't going to take that from him. The sound quality between a RP and a Reference I think is very noticeable.

    • @andrewrobinsonreviews
      @andrewrobinsonreviews  2 года назад +5

I will say that while the NEW Reference line appears to look A LOT like Reference Premiere, the differences in build quality are immediately apparent when evaluating both side by side and it is the build quality. Even though the RP line has been designed to a budget too, the added investment in the cabinet pays off!

to be honest after spending some time staring at a Polk R700 recently, more than most men should look at the curves of a speaker, I can tell you the build quality difference between Polk R700 and this Klipsch R-800F is obvious.

I have had the old Monitor Audio Silver RS6 for about 10 years and I live them. I figure I will have to spend a fair bit to get a meaningful upgrade, when the time comes.
My dad bought the Silver 100 since he knew I was happy with MA and he’s very happy with them too.
Silver 200 would seem like a good alternative to the Klipsch R-800F for those wanting floorstanding. Similar price in my area.

I kind of lost interest in Klipsch Speakers when they re-branded their synergy line to be the reference By basically just changing their IMG woofers from silver to copper and then created reference Premier, what does that even mean? the reference is the reference. Next it’ll be the reference premier plus and the reference premiere pro. A few years ago someone I know who is a little less informed, Sold his five synergy speakers on craigslist and got himself some brand new reference series speakers thinking they were getting their top of the line home theater stuff because it would’ve been the year before and I didn’t have the heart to tell him, you just bought the same Speakers (pretty much.)
Also what TV do you have on the wall? It looked really good even through my phone.

Thanks for your review. I’m impressed that Klipsch speaker doesn’t measure well or doesn’t sound well (sometimes, both). As RUclipsrs are getting measurement equipment everyone can see that most of the times there is something wrong with their products. I have a pair of old reference RB51II and if I live at US where there is a plenty of free return stores, I would try a different speaker for me.

While the JBL Stage series is newer as a low cost option, the older Studio 5 series gets way more love. They were designed by Greg Timbers, and when they're on sale they're crazy inexpensive. Would love if you could give those a review, particularly the Studio 580s. Pretty sure I'm gonna grab a pair when they go on sale next.

Good to know my RP-280F's & RP280FA's are just fine, and in fact are still the best of the line showing you get what you pay for ($700 ea & $925 ea) as they do have dampener on the inside that works.

Thank you Andrew and Kristi for the quick response. I just bought the 8000f 2’s and 150 sub that came with the deal . I’m leaning towards the Cambridge 100 amp to power but feel it may not be enough for the speakers. Would really appreciate your thoughts on that . The last system I had years ago was a Tfm 55x carver amp powering Cerwin Vega d7 speakers. Your reviews are definitely helpful full and realistic unlike other reviewers I have seen.

The AXR100 will be enough, though you may want to also take a peek at something like a Rotel, NAD or Audiolab to better handle the woofers.

I purchased three pair of the JBL a180 only because they were less than $120 a piece the time directly from JBL, and they were new in the box never used before not refurbished in any way.
For some it's all about bottom dollar price.. when it comes to obtaining very good speakers I love them both the Klipsch RP 8000 F Mark II end the JBL a180.. both speakers are party monsters make sure you get the room because you're going to need it these speakers in small rooms are just too much.. Boosie speakers need room to breathe😊 so it might be suggested that for either of these two speakers you'll need a room that is at least 14 by 16 was at least 10 ft ceilings

Just got a r41m + r820f + r34c system. Wondering if I made a huge mistake after watching this review😅. The comparable tower speakers in this review are much more expensive than I got the 820Fs for though. And this will be paired with a sub and an rz50 with Dirac, I’m hoping it won’t be as bad as the review is making it out to be.

  • @thomasshannon9662

I have the 820 Fs about the same speakers. They have no insulation on the inside of these things. I fixed the boominess with car audio material then made my own crossovers and it made a huge difference. Also baffling the port tightens up the bass.
