“You are not going to one cool thing to another , you are just doing the cool thing all the time” my man just described the Death stranding experience better than anyone
Yep, I've played 5 times since it launched, and I'll be playing it at least one more time before the sequel game drops. 😂 It's probably my favorite video game EVER. Long live Kojima.
They really should've just let the chiral artist's actress perform in her native language. She was NOT comfortable with English. Let her perform in Japanese, and then slap english subtitles under it. That works, tbh. Have the lore say that Sam knows Japanese. Norman Reedus speaks a fair bit of it!! So, just do that. A lot of the potential emotional impact of that scene was taken away. And then ofc, Sam says NOTHING the entire time. He just stoof there like a statue lmao

great content once again! it's baffling how more people doesn't get the gamaplay of DS... keep on keeping on!
i got sucked into the crying and the epic actor roster and the "dramatic" moments of all the trailers...only for me to be absolutely addicted to building highways and delivery so i can rank up to be the best delivery boy in the world. and consequently not give a single fuck about any of the characters lmao. a long cutscene of norman reedus crying and lea sedoux crying about cratering whatever town...news to me. struggle to place a ladder along a cliff and gauging to see if said ladder touches the ground at the bottom so i dont fall and break my 200 lbs of boxes...emotional.
I thought the game was boring at the start where you are forced to make a bunch of specific deliveries in the first 1 hour or so, and you have some codec calls with characters like Mama and Heartman who you don't really see or meet until 4 or 5 chapters later. I spent ages wondering who those people were or why I should even care about them, that by the time I actually did meet them I had forgotten that I was ever curious. Depending on how people decide to play the game (making lots of small deliveries and exploring the landscape) they might not reach those chapters for something like 20+ hours. My first playthrough was nearly 100 hours long because I focused on five staring as many shelters as possible the first time, up-voting other people's structures and signs, intentionally getting into fights with enemy camps, and destroying BTs. When I did reach the Heartman chapter that was when I thought the story finally became interesting, because he was sharing his research and there was some element of sense behind what was going on; up until that point it seemed that Sam was being intentionally kept in the dark as much as possible. Heartman's character was exploring the travel between life and death, and how he might communicate with people in purgatory. His work also had a personal element because his own family had died, so it was perfectly reasonable for him to want to cry all the time, but he has the great excuse of regularly exposing himself to a chiral element. I think that is really meant to be the idea behind that, it's an excuse like "No I'm not actually sad, it's just this allergy" but in reality everyone is incredibly upset and dealing with horrible trauma, which finally comes out as an expression of guilt after Die Hardman makes his UCA Presidential speech - "Let there be no more walls between us, or masks to hide who we are". Everyone he loved is dead and he has to confess his truth to Sam; there is no mask and no chiral energy. He is exposed and alive, so you know the emotion is completely real and raw. Before then it was all hidden, and he was doing a job to give you instructions behind several masks of professionalism and bureaucracy. Because players never actually got to go inside of city-shelters and meet a colony of people, the boss fights didn't really seem as though they mattered that much. It never really felt like I was fighting for a collective of 'people' to protect them from something no one else had ever faced or knew how to deal with (especially since Higgs was able to summon them out of thin air with practically zero effort, and would treat them like pets). Sam only ever met individuals or couples living in shelters together, and a lot of them didn't really trust him. Several of them died of natural causes shortly after he connected with them, or their attempts to live together were not actually pleasant, and they privately contacted Sam later to say that they wished they had stayed alone. Sam always had a private room and there were never any other porters making deliveries or taking cargo from inside of sheltered areas even though you would see them walking around in the wilderness.
Man, video is so good. Good writing and editing, you hooked me quite quickly. Regarding the writing of DS, couldn't agree you more with you. You forgot the best dialogue though , all I'm going to say is " Beach and Peach " and you'll get it.
I would take a bullet for this game. A risky AAA game trying to bring something new to the table. Dumb? Yeah, kinda. But the attempt needs to be appreciated.
Agree with this sentiment, Kojima games usually have insufferable dialogue but I will cherish large budget games taking risks. We all love indie gaming but we need more games that are outside the box by bigger companies too.
With death stranding the only way is to embrace all the nonsense. But I agree. Die hardman scene is incredible. Better graphics and animations than still in modern games. But the gameplay. I just start the game and walk. It’s so good. Instead of finally replaying the game I go back to my save and just walk around
100% Agree. I went into the game fully expecting to hate the gameplay but like the story. It was the complete opposite at the end. Loved the gameplay, I wanted to keep delivering and building roads and stuff that others could use. The story... I think something most people don't mention, including this video, is that there's 2 stories. Sam's self discovery and growth one and the supernatural one. Sam's story, is great. Like, it genuinely is a great story of a broken man that learns to love himself and those around him. The chapters that focus around him and Mads Mikkelsen, specially at the end, are 10/10. The BBT and Supernatural stuff tho? ... awful. Absolutely freaking awful. It starts interesting, but it gets dumber and dumber as it goes. All the sections where they try to explain all the supernatural stuff, and the big reveal, are laughably bad, those are the parts with the worst dialogue by a mile "I'm Princess BEACH". With how much better Sam's story is and how connected all of that to the gameplay and narrative is, a man delivering hope while finding his own, makes it feel like that was the main focus and what the whole game was going to be about. But then Kojima kicked the door down, half-drunk then went "Powers! Supernatural stuff! Flying Whales! Babies" and since he's the boss everyone was like "... sh*t.. h-how do we add all of that now?". And the answer was: No one knew. So it ended as a mess of cool sounding ideas and concepts but nothing else.
Great video! I've subscribed. It's exactly how I felt about the dialogue/writing as well and same way I feel about all the Kojima games I've played - overly convoluted and wordy to the point of parody, but the things you see along the way are mind blowing
Just started playing it again two days ago after buying it day one and power playing maybe a third through, honestly enjoying it. Still, I put it down till almost exactly 4 years later (funny that). I really love this game. Not because of the story although I love the presentation. Not because of the dialogue although I really like the whole principal cast. Not because of the story although it seems to have just enough "themes" tacked together that I can fill in the gaps and notice some interesting ideas. But man, the gameplay is just so damn good, like MGSV - deep but accessible - but so unbelievably unique. This video completely nails it, and although I'm not finished the game yet (I really wasn't expecting the story to get better or suddenly begin to make any fucking sense) I enjoy the moment to moment experience and pacing as a whole. Trying to bumrush the next delivery point for the record finish on a bike; or taking my time on foot and creatively attacking the terrain - its all very satisfying. I salute you sir for making this awesome video, you have gained +1 subscriber for what its worth. Now I'm going to go back to playing the game can't wait for that Diehardman scene
i honestly didn't care about the story that much. but for the gameplay, i think DS is one of the greatest games i have ever played. it's gameplay is meaningful. your decisions have weight, and this makes the online features very meaningful too
Found the game fun at the start but never went back to after 8 hours. I felt like I saw everything it had to offer and didn't feel a desire to play it ever again.
I purchased this on release but never got more than a couple hours into it. I don't see myself revisiting it. I would hope for something more focused and grounded from Kojima going forward because he really elevated the horror genre with P.T.
Kojima is japanese so i can forgive him the 'bad' dialogue. sorry but your constant negativity stopped me from watching. I didn't wait to find out why you loved it. sorry.
This game felt like a fever dream thinking back on it. Parts I absolutely adored like transporting a bomb but man that story and dialogue is horrible. "Princess beach" comes to mind
Interesting point about roads. I was there building whole road on release. I want to replay dc and it will be interesting to either go offline or just dot build my own roads.
I loved this game and think about it regularly but it is the weirdest game ever made. Just deliver packages and avoid goo people. But there was something very relaxing about it: walking, planning your routes, preparing for the journey, debating if you have the strength to gather more packages along the way. It's a dumb game and I love it.
I played 75 hours and understood that Death Stranding's charisma really lies in the ingenuity of its mechanics. But honestly, I didn't get excited about Death Stranding, so I stopped playing it. I was led by an expectation that the game would bring something very good due to it being a new proposal, but I think that our satisfaction is not made of expectations but of an actual feeling of satisfaction. In fact, our feeling is the best compass to keep playing or not a game, after giving some time playing it. So I decided to take seriously what I was feeling ("this game is boring most of the time") and decided to stop. I think video game is meant to be fun and not duty, we don't have to save the world, but get some fun. But even so, I'm grateful for Death Stranding, as it presents many interesting ideas in its ingenious mechanics that are inspiration for future games.
I loved Death Stranding but I do think Kojima could use an editor. To me, he's a guy with great ideas but needs someone to reel him in and make sure those ideas actually get executed the right way. I was enjoying this up until the last five hours, and I do agree that they should've just focused solely on the delivery stuff. I mean, if the premise of this world is that the realm of the living and the dead merged into one, why not have the areas the Cliff segments take place in actually be areas you have to deliver packages in?
Death Stranding is, to me, the current peak of Kojima's fascination with Hollywood stardom and the utter failure in the attempted deconstruction of both cinema and videogame language. This is one of those games I sort of cherish as a phenomenon *because* of how much I dislike it and find it unsalvageable as an experience. It's like going to a sports event where the crowd cheers to a game with rules I don't understand and where meaning/goals seems entirely lost, while still finding all the individual pieces make acceptable sense on their own. It's baffling. It's in this sense I can be entertained to hear people honestly attempt to explain why they find this game acceptable to spend time with, let alone justify its worth at large. Knowing there's a sequel coming makes it even more entertaining.
I absolutely love this game, and as for the bad things it has I still very much enjoyed it through and through, I’m hoping in DS2 Kojima improvises from the last game and hopefully DS2 will be better in terms of the bad things DS1 Did like line delievery and awkawardness of some things. Great video 🤙🏽
that japanese girl that looked like she was 13 talking about her missing loved one , i thought that she was talking about her parents or something. i cringed when i found out it was actually her husband 😂 her acting was horrible too , there’s no way she wasn’t a family friend of Kojima 😂
So I don't own the couch anymore, and it was a hand-me-down, so I don't really know much about it. Plus, it was a three-seat couch that was jury-rigged to be a two-seater, so I doubt you could find one exactly like it.
what i hear about that actress who doesn't speak english is that she's literally just some girl off instagram that Kojima was simping for so its safe to assume the whole confession thing was some weird shit from Kojima
Cant overstate how much i love this game, hoping we get to see more of 2 at the game awards
“You are not going to one cool thing to another , you are just doing the cool thing all the time” my man just described the Death stranding experience better than anyone
I finished the game and started playing all over again... Can't stay away from it
