I really appreciate your detailed commentary on your draft and gameplay decisions. Out Cold MVP! I got the chance to play a pretty intense game against you a couple weeks back. Felt like I had you on the back foot and you flipped an Aurelia's Vindicator exiling 3 of my creatures and 4 from your graveyard. Was hoping it would be part of a stream/video so I could go back and see the game from your perspective, but I don't think it was. Anyway, it's so good to have you back on RUclips -- this is fast becoming a favorite channel. :)
It's interesting to see mtg arena doesn't have layered visual effects of ward and the 'frost breath' effect from 'out cold' on the card when both effects are in the creature
Wow this was a really fun watch! Some really tense moments here! I love your positivity and how you lean into your mistakes, owning up and trying to immediately improve. Great to see in action.
I just found this channel recently. As a casual player I really love how accessible your content is. I don't think I've ever felt so tense watching Magic before lol.
Hey man, new to the channel, just wanted to say I like your style. You're humble and respectful of your opponents, you get excited when you win without being a jerk, you don't whine when the packs don't hand you bombs... and your commentary is consistent and insightful. Thanks for helping out the community. And cheers on this win, by the way! You sideboarded one of your only rares, and still kicked butt. Inspiring.
Big congrats on the clean 4-0🎉 Fellow Mythic grinder here with #1 top placement under my belt so I can relate. Even though I play a ton (obv) myself and at this stage feel I”ve mastered the format I still get something new and useful out of watching your vids. Especially impressed of how you successfully frequently take “a turn off” with your aggressive decks. Great instincts, great understanding of the format👏 Keep it up🎉❤
I'm not gonna lie, at the end of the 3rd round when the opponent dropped the 2 flyers and there was like less then 20 min left in the video, I thought you were out. I was prepared for 15 minutes of post games wrap up lol. But then a whole other round where you absolutely dominated!!! Great stuff!
1:40:19 The line would have been to play the spell first before flipping since we were already playing around the counterspell. Luckily they didn't have it 😅
I was so tense as you were mapping out the blockers in that Conspiracy Unraveler game... talking to my screen "scene of the crime!". Audibly said "thank god" when you noticed it before potential disaster, haha.
GGs from match 3. I thought our 3rd game was a good one, worthy of being the qualifier for the second draft. My last card was case of the burning masks, and I just ran out of time looking at my deck tracker. Pretty sure lightning helix was my only out to live the turn. Here's hoping you were able to take it all the way for the 2k.
Congrats in making to Draft 2. I’m really rooting for you and hope you get cash money. Nice commentary on the draft picks and the way you navigated each play. You played it so tight. I was initially confused about the bounce spell over blue curse on a UR deck, but the bounce spell treated u well. This is why I’m not a pro 😂
Yeah I think the case of the filched falcon is a little more synergistic but I felt it was more important for my deck to have the bounce spell at that moment. Early on I probably take the enchantment.
Well played! Also interesting to note that you are playing 0 rares, though Maverick Thopterist is kind of like a rare. Out Cold kept showing up at the perfect time.
Surely, at 01:24:50, the play is to play out your Person of Interest, let them attack with five power worth of fliers, rather than using the Out Cold mostly defensively. Yes, you are dead to a top-decked pump spell, but it also makes it essentially impossible for them to play out enough blockers the following turn. Feel that would have maximised the chance to win. Thanks for posting btw! Love watching :-)
I think there are justifications to play Out Cold like 3 different ways that turn. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what was ideal but with the rope ticking down, I just went with the safest line. I could have mainphased it to force them to topdeck removal as well.
@@haumph I think it's one of those cases where if decklists were open, then the right thing to do is to run through each and every possibility - but you're right, in absence of that knowledge, it's probably tough to know what "correct" means here. I didn't consider the main-phase option either. Really hope you keep posting Arena Open videos btw! All the best from Australia.
Gadgeteer gives you a reduction in activated abilities, not casting cost. So it's great for clues and equipment, etc. Equipment is nice because when you get them, you also get a clue (and they equip for 1 less as well)
I rewatched the draft and to be honest, R/W would have also been totally fine given that I would have gotten a second helix and a 10th district in the last pack. I'm not sure if blue was super open but nobody was in U/R specifically. Still happy with the result of course.
Dude I missed watching your videos so much great draft if I ever have the chance im watching your videos and when drafting vintage its UW cheons all the way
I think you might have been misreading the Gadgeteer. The reduction cost is for the activated abilities, which would be for things like your clues. There's still a decent enough chance that it would trigger off of playing an artifact, but it's hard to say. You do have a lot of ways to make clues and sac-ing those clues for 1 vs 2 can be a pretty big tempo swing. I think you could've played a smidge more into the clue synergies with the late Crime Novelist and 2nd Filched Falcon. I know those are both a bit niche, but you could've have a good amount of clues for the novelist (although I agree that it's an underwhelming card so maybe even with a decent number clues, it was still not good). I do think you had more than enough artifacts to reliably trigger Filched Falcon and turning an artifact into a 4/4 flier ends games really quickly. Not a bad deck by any means, though. That's just my two cents and I am certainly still learning. If anything, I think it was nice seeing that my opinions aligned with yours so closely since it makes me feel like my drafting skills are coming along well.
Gadgeteer sadly just isn't good enough. I regret taking it over the bubble smuggler honestly. Crime Novelist is nearly unplayable unless you're all in on clues. Really need a Detective's Satchel to get it going. I explained why I didn't go for the 2nd filched falcon as I wanted to be more proactive and desperately needed interaction in the form of the 1U bounce spell. Drafting is very fluid and I can't just always make picks in a vacuum and instead need to address the needs of my deck particularly in pack 3. This is why draft is also awesome. Gl in your future drafts!
Paul can you talk through not casting out cold on your turn at 1:23:42. It turns out it was correct but how are you deciding there to not just fire it off? Thanks and congrats!
I wanted to give myself a two-turn window and lock down the fliers for two turns to re-evaluate future turns but it may have been incorrect (hence my tank). If i main phase out cold, my 4/4 eats their 3/2 and their 3/3 eats my 2/2 and they go to 2. they're left with just a 3/3 with my board of 4/4 and person of interest in play. so any singular creature isn't enough. the funny part is I lose if I mainphase Out Cold since they specifically drew the sanguine savior. They would have blocked my 4/4, given it life link, take 2 from my person of interest, gain 3 from eliminator and attack back with 3 fliers. A removal spell for my person of interest would also have prevented me from winning on the following turn. I definitely took the more conservative route since my thought process was: out cold their fliers, draw a card, then i still have a solid attack and can drop my person of interest + whatever i draw off of clue + draw for turn. i'd imagine it'd be very difficult for them to come back from that point as well. very close call though and it's very possible I should have just tried to end the game asap.
Thoughts on Gravestone Strider over Sanitation Automaton on P2/P7? I think it may be better in UR and with the potential of splashing for lightning helix and maybe another future white card
Great point. I think my deck specifically wanted the 2 power creature as I was looking to be a more aggressive tempo oriented u/r deck rather than the typical controlling detective's satchel u/r decks. but the average u/r deck probably wants the strider more. the strider still could have been the pick.
Okay, nice draft. Congrats! But am I missing something, how is Maverick Thopterist "one of the best Uncommons in the set"? Isn't it a card from the List with like
The List itself has changed from previous sets, so there's less cards overall. It's really more like a bonus sheet, but they show off enough that it's worth noting them when you see them. It's 1.5% of the time you'll get a specific card in any pack, which is low but still achievable.
So if you choose only one target for glint weaver and that target gets removed in response, then the ability fizzles and no life is gained. Opponent should have spread the counters to prevent that from happening. I actually didn't know about this until it happened to me a few days ago!
If all of a spell or ability's targets are illegal as it tries to resolve, it fizzles entirely. They only chose one target for the glint weaver ETB, so removing that one target countered the entire ability.
Does anyone else enjoy watching magic over playing it at this point? Last Draft I did I had an insane deck with multiple bomb rares. Game 1 I drew 2 lands in 10 cards and lost. Game 2 I drew 10 lands in 12 cards and lost. Game 3 I mulliganed to 5 because of 2 1-land hands. In all 3 games I never even drew one of my bombs. What's the point of a strategy game where RNG is 90% of the game and skill is 10%.
The suspense! It was like watching Paul Cheon on the Pro Tour with Paul Cheon in the booth 😂
Self commentary hah!
@thoptercrew Exactly what I was thinking.
@haumph I appreciate the editing / cutting out of waiting times.
hahaha true
It shouldn’t be surprising due to your background, but your commentary on pick selection and gameplay is fantastic. Great run!
Thanks a bunch!
Mr Cheon is so nice. He personally likes all your comments and wants to interact. Excited and energetic when winning and never salty. Great content.
I try to keep the salt contained but I'm human so it might come out from time to time!

What a freaking top deck was that Out Cold (x2!). Great playing, love the analysis of what decisions might have been better.
Yeah if this was paper magic, I'd frame that Out Cold for sure.
It's interesting to see mtg arena doesn't have layered visual effects of ward and the 'frost breath' effect from 'out cold' on the card when both effects are in the creature
Out cold is just instant speed supreme verdict
Getting to watch an arena open with this level of commentary is a real treat and learning experience Thank you Paul and good luck

first game out cold! loving it
Out Cold MVP
awesome gameplay and self commentary, very fun to watch!
Glad you enjoyed!
Some of the most exciting Out Colds I've ever seen ❤❄️
Man if i were the opononets i would have tilted so much so many bail outs from out cold when the game was over was crazy
Yeah they were CLUTCH!

Watching game 3 round 3 was so awesome!! Really love your vids Paul

New follower, love the draft/sealed content. You're so knowledgeable and fun to watch. Congrats on day 2++!!
Thank you!
I really like the way the Arena Open is going for you.
Whew! Congrats Paul, and good job on the 4-0! You had some suspenseful games there. Good luck tomorrow, hope you get that prize!

Nice work with the draft wow, the deck zero bombs or really nice rares even. With such a bomb format still performed so well
Out Cold was my bomb haha
What I learned from this is that Out Cold is an essential card.
insane stuff mr cheon, became a fan now. Great stuff man.

Good for you man, I decided on a whim to try the open and I only made it to 4 wins in sealed, would have been fun to draft. Good luck!
Thank you!
1:13:03 That's the type of line that, as a novice, I would miss, but it really worked in you favor.
Yeah it was a bit unintuitive but i absolutely needed to make a big board impacting play on the following turn.
That second game to win the first match was a nail biter.. Awesome!
Yeah suuuuuper close. Out Cold FOR THE WIN!
Learned a lot & it was extremely entertaining! Great video!
Awesome! Thank you!
Forensic Gadgeteer makes cracking clues 1 cheaper aswell, I would play it
Lets go Paul! Really fun to see you jump into the blue red lane
It was a good time!
Out cold should be your favorite card after those matches
It was the MVP FOR SURE!
Great games nice work Paul! Proving that you don’t need bombs to crush a draft 💪
Quit disrespecting Out Cold like that!
Awesome job man! That was one hell of a draft.
Thanks!
Love your style man, you play with so much joy!
Glad you enjoy it!
Fantastic!!! Hope you go all the way!!
And without a single rare bomb! Who says this format is a bomb war?
Out Cold was my bomb!
Go Paul go!!!!!!!!!!! Do you need food? I’ll door dash you something from southern WA.
If I was live streaming that would have been pretty funny to have people deliver me food. Event is over though!
Geoff! How's it going? This is Justin from Sunnyside years ago lol

Energy levels go up when there are stakes!!!
Man, Out Cold doing WORK this draft!
Absolutely the MVP of my deck.
Why did you not play the person of interest at 1:23:46? Did you not have the mana for both that and out cold? Or were you saving it for a reason?
One mana short
Haumph. You are them up
Haumphing the competition!
This was a good game
Sure was!
Heck yeah dude
Fantastic games! out cold be in the late game bomb.
It was PERFECT for our deck.
When is draft 2 coming ??? So curious;)
Out now!
The biggest thing i picked up was cutting the Rare. There was a few ways to trigger it but the one suspicious detonation paid off way more.
Yeah the rare looks a lot cooler than it plays out.
Seeing Paul Cheon play reminds me why I am a medium player at best.
I also feel this way when I watch people like Jean Emmanuel-Depraz and Nathan Steuer play.
Well done!!
Thanks!

Yes! Thank you!

Out Cold the real MVP
