Hey Scottie, Thanks for this post on spring lubrication, just what I needed! Rex
Cool, glad i was able to help. Thanks for your comment.
Thank you so much !
I am glad the video was helpful for you.
Very useful tips for me Sir ! Before this information I frequently used clock oil for main spring.
Only oil that should be used on springs are high pressure oils like keystone mainspring lubricant
Wondering about using Molybdenum Disulfide powder on a mainspring - like Dupont MOLYKOTE Z Powder?
Should not be a problem, it has many of the characteristics of the grease I use. Thanks for your comment.
I have enjoyed your videos if for, if nothing else, you talk at the right speed. But I will take exception to your title because modern-day greases are made from oil with a thickening agent added. The right oil, i.e. one with a high shear strength, is a component of the grease you are probably using. It does not need a thickening agent to keep from being squeezed out because you know how to properly apply it. Oil on mainsprings is only squeezed out if too much was applied to start with. Keep up the great posts!
I agree.....50 years and about 3000 clocks...never used grease and no drip in the case.
The mainspring winder anchor for the loop end of the mainspring was rubbing across all of the great-wheel teeth as you were winding - That's not a good thing!
...YOU'RE RIGHT-!!
I have a very old seth Thomas wall clock.. part of the spring barrel have glass type area for seeing into inside of barrel. Looking red type of liquid, is it red mercury or grease !!!? Pls reply
I'm afraid that your question makes no sense. Spring barrels do not have windows, glass or otherwise. There is no such thing as red mercury, unless you're referring to cinnibar, a mercuric oxide which is not used in clocks. Please explain.
...FOR THE HELL OF IT-(?)
