Putting A Pendulum Clock In Beat - Lesson 1
#clocks #clockrepair
This is the first of the new Clock Repair - Essentials series.
I explain the old way that a clock was put in beat.
A clock movement has been set up on a test stand where I demonstrate how to solve the 'out of beat' problem.
I deliberately bend the Crutch the wrong way so that you can easily hear that this option is not the way to solve the problem.
Then I demonstrate how the problem is solved correctly.
I have attached a Beat Amplifier to the movement so that the tick-tock of the Escape Wheel/Pallets is easily heard.

#clocks #clockrepair Episode 2 of the Sessions Salem Revere Lighthouse Banjo striking wall clock made in about 1927. I managed to remove the back of the case which was originally a tight friction fit, but some idiot decided it would be a good idea to glue it down. As I expected, a small portion of the back of the case broke off so after I clean the mess up I'll use four small brass clock screws...

I do the tilt to know which way to bend the foot end of the crutch, but a final test is visual as well as the sound for me. Is the verge going the same depth into the teeth of the escapement wheel? That for me works better than the beat amplifier to verify I've got the verge centered-the drop and the stop are catching the same amount of tooth, so they will spend the same amount of time in contact with the tooth. Good viddeo!
Great Tutorial! Got mine back together on the first try. Many Thanx!! 😎
Very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you I do hear about polishing pivot, now t know
I can get the perilite and bark in the US. But what is the first potting medium that you had to break up?
Hi Cheryl, The first component is called coco peat in Australia, you should be able to get it in the US. Coir is the long strandy stuff from coconuts and coco peat is the very finely crushed up coconut husks. It is excellent for water retention, I tend to use 5-10% in most of my orchid mixes for that reason. Slipper orchids, Cymbidiums, Dendrobiums, Paphiopedilums, Oncidiums, Vandas, Miltonias, Zygopetalums, Brassias etc. Thanks for your comment.
Love your orchids! I've never had a keiki. Tons of blooms on mine. Will bloom again from the same spike that stayed green for a month, but no keikis. But I got my mom started on orchids last year and she's got one. Do you know why they make them sometimes or how i could encourage mine to make them?
Hi Cheryl, Re: keikis: This is a comment I received recently and my reply:: a) Q: Sir, very nice & healthy plant. Please share the fertilizers you are providing to mother plant to get kikis in large numbers A: I use a combination of Thrive commercial fertilizer and Power Feed which is a fish/seaweed fertilizer. I use half strength once a week for three weeks then just water on the fourth week. I find this works better than the usual recommendation of full strength fertilizer for one week then just water for the next three weeks. b) Denbrobium canes that are 3 years or older (starting to get deepish grooves along the canes) can be removed from the plant to generate keikis. Cut the old cane up into lengths with at least 4 to 5 nodes on each piece and lay them down on wet sand out of direct sunlight. After a month to 6 weeks (keep the sand moist) the nodes that didn't produce flowers will start to shoot and become keikis. Keikis are usually removed from mother plants for potting on when their roots reach 3 inches long. Keikis are removed from the cut up old canes when that have roots about 1 long with green growing tips,( called apical meristems ), as there is a finite amount of sugars in the old cane. The roots on the keikis will whither away if you wait for them to grow longer. Hope this helps, and let me know how you go. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Scottie. Such a great help you are. My problem is getting the leader into the crutch.
My first check when I find one not running. Fixes most of em
Good explanation / instruction Scottie

Great video, thank you for sharing the use of these kind of tools, not much is shared on clockmaking tools around RUclips.
This makes it clear thankyou, love the birds calling outside. 😊
Thanks for your comment, many more gardening videos to be uploaded.
Good on you Scottie i suppose farming/hydroponics gives you a well earned break from clock repair. Keep it up mate❤😂🎉
Yes, hydroponics is a totally different field for sure. Thanks for your comment.
Your sharing is terrifically helpful for my buying ancient clocks and saving them. Some get pretty confusing w/o help from an expert like yourself. I'm doing ok and proud. ThanX to YOU! Hello from Wisconsin, USA
Broke main spring when winding up our E.N. Welch school clock, I started watching these and other videos, I was going to take it to a repair shop but thought I would give it a try myself and ordered a spring on ebay. Thanks to your lessons was able to get it working again and the wife is really happy now...
Excellent video, sctiei I’ve learned so much from you, you are my hero
Hi Scottie. I’m looking for info on a Westclox movement from around 1917 or so, might b a 5a. Specifically how to reassemble it.
Greatt workk
Thank you very much Scottie. Your videos are very well done and they have been very informative. As a DIY person, being able to make this tool will save me some money as I am not in the field of repairing clocks.
Wow very interesting. 3
Ansonia strike side system is quite tricky to get them timed correctly. If it not timed correctly then it will not stop striking or striking once.
Thank you. You make it looks so easy
This is awesome I just got one of these clocks

Excellent.
More videos of this year's crop coming soon. Thanks for your comment.
Hi, you did not show us how you did adjustment with loose crutch and arbor
Excellent video. Believe it or not a simple workaround for the infamous wrapped wire spring is to remove it and just crimp a couple tiny lead fishing weights on the business end of the lift lever. I did this over a year ago and hasn't missed a strike since so it's something to consider if the springs causing headaches

I think those movement holders will rotate to give you the room to pull the movement out.
So calming to watch old clocks get restored.
Hi, scottie, great video, certainly you're getting popular. You did not show us how to put the flute?
Better to burnish - that way you're not removing material.
Interesting stuff Scottie!
Hi Whitney, yes, it's a bit different from my usual content.
How do you feel about ultrasonic cleaners for clock parts Scottie?
I love clocks and peppers! 🥰
Looks like you've come to the right place Ron. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Scottie, I've just bought this clock, well, very similar either from the late 70s early 80s, mine is a 31 day but is pretty much identical to yours. I'm wondering if you could help me. Its running around 78bpm. It's perfectly level, fully wound it seems to be keeping time (ish) but 78bpm seems a bit weird to me. I'm new to these clocks, I've always wanted one since I was a kid. The pendulum looks right, looks original as far as I can see. I'm going to take it apart and service it at some point in the future. Do you have much experience with these clocks? Would you be able to teach me a thing or 2 about them please I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks 👍🏻
Thank you very helpful, but you jumped how you did put the Arbor?
ca a l air trés simple ,mais c est pas aussi facile ,croyez moi j ai essayé
Good stuff Scottie
Wow, didn't know that! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing Scottie
Thanks for your commenmt Whitney.
