  • During my time in Wellington, I caught up with Philippa Boyens (The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit trilogies)! Here, she discusses her latest adventure in Middle-earth: the anime film The War of the Rohirrim! We are also introduced to screenwriters Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou in their first official interview for the film!
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim releases December 13, 2024. Taking place 260 years before The Lord of the Rings, the story finds Rohan invaded by the Dunlendings. The story eventually finds Rohan's king, Helm Hammerhand, taking refuge in the fortress that will one day bear his name.
    CAST:
    Brian Cox - Helm Hammerhand
    Miranda Otto - Éowyn (narrator)
    Gaia Wise - Hera
    Luke Pasqualino - Wulf
Laurence Ubong Williams - Fréaláf Hildeson
    Shaun Dooley - Freca

It's really refreshing to hear someone who is so familiar with the source material talking about this topic, and taking a leading role in the making of this film, which is of course natural since she spent much of her career working on two Tolkien trilogies! Not to detract from the main topic, but I did not have that impression at all with Rings of Power's showrunners, as it felt like their whole marketing was centered around making excuses why they changed things and that they somehow felt like Tolkien's stories needed to be "updated". Basically, I'm really looking forward to this film, and I haven't had that feeling about a Tolkien piece of media for a long time.

I get that, I was just wondering what they thought was an "idiotic" decision. I think a lot of changes were defendable.
For example; I dislike the lack of Glorfindel. He was one of my favourite characters. However, adding Arwen to the story here allowed them additional exposition and development of Aragorn's story and relationship with Arwen.
I also disliked that they changed Aragorn's character. But I liked that they cut Tom Bombadil & the Barrows.

I truly think they want to make the best product they can and that they possess the depth of knowledge of Tolkien’s world like the writers of LOTR but they misunderstand the heart of the stories, which is love, friendship, justice, virtue, darkness, betrayal, hardship, courage, and resolve as well as a clear distinction between good and evil. They got some of that in the show but to me, the ROP is just another fantasy show. If you’re gonna put LOTR in the title, put those attributes in it too. Oh my god, I would so much love to read that 90 page first "overview" Jackson and Walsh sent to her about The Lord Of The Rings in the beginning that gave her sparks.
And the interview with Philippa was just so much fun and it was so nice that the other two gave their time

Its people like Philippa, Fran and Peter who should be given an exclusive position, regardless of the studio involved, as creative directors or something akin to that. A sort of "Head of Middle Earth" position. Words cannot explain how much trust i place in Phillipa, Fran and Peter when it comes to Tolkiens work.
Loved every second of this. Philippa is a genius and i have lots of excitement going forward for Phoebe and Arty as well! They came across very very well. By the sounds of it, "the next generation" as Phillipa discribed them, is in safe hands.

An interview with peter jackson should definitely be your next big goal for your channel, your are the most subscribed lord of the rings content channel on youtube with over one million subscribers, that would be the best time to ask him about the possible lotr 25th anniversary super extended edition with never seen before deleted scenes (which we know they exist, some of them are even in the original trailers of the trilogy)added to the trilogy, we know that warner bros went to new zealand and met peter jackson alongside fran and philippa and talked about the future of the on-screen lotr trilogy, philippa seemed to be a bit stressed and smiled when you brought up the topic about lotr appendices and the witch king story, fingers crossed , the best is yet to come 💪

The fact that Philippa Boyens isn't one of the most famous writers in Hollywood is a crime. She's one of the reasons that the LOTR and Hobbit trilogies are so damn good (and yes, the Hobbit movies are good). And, Philippa, if you're reading this... I loved the changes that were made to the films; as someone who adores the book AND adores the movies, I think everyone involved did a wonderful job of weaving together the greater lore of Tolkien's world while maintaining the spirit and love from the book.

I can't believe you said "Fingolfin" - that was the ultimate nerd's answer! :D All we know about Fingolfin's character is that he had this conflict with Fëanor and that he fought a duel with Morgoth. These only give us possible glimpses of what his personality might have been. Basically, he's just a player in events and what we know of him are just his interventions in the history of events. Of course, Philippa was always going to say "Lúthien" - as she's one of the more fully-drawn characters. We get to know her personality. Other candidates might have been Túrin, Morwen, Thingol, Melian, Felagund, Eöl, Maeglin, Beren, Beleg, Mîm or even Melkor or Sauron - because again we are given much more of an insight into their personalities than we ever do with Fingolfin.
