Yesterday, the kids made Turmeric Sun Prints. They are pretty easy for a high impact piece, and it’s such a cool process!
Step 1 - Make the Paint
•Mix together 1 tsp turmeric with 4-6 tsp rubbing alcohol. Don’t use things you’ll eat in or with!
•Filter the mixture through a coffee filter or cheese cloth or piece of cotton.
    Step 2 - Paint!
•Cover your surface and use white paper (we used Watercolor Paper).
•Use either painting sponges or paint brushes to paint the entire surface
Step 3 - Wait and Gather Natural Elements
•While you wait for your paper to completely dry, select natural elements from around your yard
Step 4 - Arrange Natural Elements
•Once the paper is 100% dry, arrange your natural elements however you’d like. Then place a glass on top to hold down the natural elements while your paper sits in the sun. I used a piece of glass from a picture frame I wasn’t using.
    Step 5 - Wait!
•Wait about 3-6 hours depending on the strength of the sun. Check your prints to make sure they are constantly in the sun during this process. Wait until the yellow of the turmeric paint fades significantly.
Step 6 - Remove Glass and Natural Elements
•When your print is ready, remove the glass and natural elements. There should be a slightly darker impression of where the natural elements were.
Step 7 - “Develop” Your Print
•Fill a container with a few cups of warm water and a bit of baking soda.
•Mix to dissolve the baking soda.
•Press the paper into the tub for a few seconds (or pour it over the print if you don’t have a tub).
•Viola! The print should turn into a beautiful rusty orange color.
Just a heads up - the turmeric paint will stain almost anything. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting stained, wear latex or rubber gloves, and cover your surfaces.
Also, I suggest taking a picture of your prints and keep them in a darker place because they will fade with time.
