Hello Phil. Last year I searched a lot for this strumming, until I found a tutorial I found good and was practicing it. But now I will continue practicing yours, as I find it sounds a lot more like the real deal. Thank you!

Hey Phil! Great tutorial. Although I kinda already know the technique it's always nice to review it. I realized I tend to omit the ring finger. Please don't forget to add a tutorial on the "reverse" or downward strum (for instance F chord on Sultans). Thanks once again for sharing your knowledge and putting these videos together!

Cheers Pablo - great to hear from you. Not sure what your mean by the downward strum - whereabouts in the song are you thinking?

@@philcaffrey hey Phil, thanks a lot for answering. For instance on Sultans' verse when we change to the F chord (just before "the band is blowing Dixie"), he "fans" his fingers downwards on top of the fretboard. Will look for video evidence hehe I'm not that good at explaining it

He does it here. He goes from his regular strumming position, anchoring pinky and ring finger, to a downward strum further up, on top of the fretboard.

@@pablo963man.. I've been trying to figure out how to get this strum to sound right for yeeears now lol. Crazy how many random little things that Mark does completely different than any other guitarist... and how every one of them contributes to his overall sound. Would love to see Phil go over this one too!

@@philcaffreyPretty sure he means the little fretboard downstrums he does (higher up the neck a little on the fretboard kinda). Uses it several times in sultans and as a flourish in other songs. (Also at the end of the Alchemy Sultans version, three times in a row, right at the end before the outro/"applause building" riff).
Feels like a flamenco-ey flourish and sounds almost like a ultra fast "triple strum", if you will. Only way I can play something that sounds even somewhat correct to my ear, is to do a slow upstroke with a fast downstroke flick.. but I know thats wrong too, because Mark looks like he does it almost with his index nail and/or strumming fingers all at once.

Interesting how you have less than 1K views. The kids are addicted to gear, not actually playing. It’s a super series you put together.
I started playing in 67. But MK kept me playing in 79 because I felt disjointed from the trend. Van Halen high gain etc and the advent of pedals. I started emulating the new “Three Kings” MK, Summers &Marr. (Jimmy Scott unfortunately didn’t hang around enough to be included).
My long winded point is have you noticed that when he was high on speed he used this technique lightning fast to allow Withers to catch up with him. Rockpalast etc being a good example. Like a Rodgers chuck.
Anyway good luck to you, in the distant future the kids will be crawling all over this 👍🏻

Thanks a million for that. It can be a bit frustrating when sleeping cats and talking dogs get millions of views and someone trying to put out decent content that takes a lot of time gets a few hundred. That said, I see it as my small contribution to the legacy of one of the greats and I'll keep going as long as I can. Thanks for your support!

Nice ”backwards strumming”, sounds good. I like your left hand strumming technique (a lefty knows another :)
