So refreshing...a great teacher!!! Thank you!
Thanks Roger!
great
A great tutorial to get into as a beginner. I bet you give many guitar players a lot of motivation with your tutorials!
Thank you very much for your kind comment. Good luck on your journey - a lifetime of enjoyment awaits!
Very nicely done. Is there a way to get a backing track like you are using?
Hi. Thanks for your nice comment. It's much appreciated. For the backing, I record this myself in my home studio. You can see the mixer levels behind me in the video. I use Reaper as my Daw, Korg Krome for the keyboard and drum sounds and a Fender precision bass. I try to replicate the original sound as closely as I can which takes some time and a good ear, but it's fun. Cheers.
Great teaching. You're a hugely talented open goldmine! Thanks so much. I'll spread the word.
That's very kind Roger. Much appreciated. Thanks for your support and any word spreading you can do. 👍👍
I was fortunate enough to attend a DS concert with its original 4 piece line-up. It was like witnessing a miracle. I came out trembling and have been fully addicted ever since. Of course, i had to rush out and buy a strat, and have struggled ever since to play even remotely close to MK, but now i think with these beautifully presented videos, i might be in with a chance. Im surprised I've not come across these before. Consider me subscribed.
Thanks a million Freddy. I first saw them just as Dave left and Hal & Alan joined - 12th Dec 1980. Loudest gig I ever went to! Highlight was "Where do you think you're going". Thanks for the sub!
Very very very well, thank you!!!
Great video idea!
I like your Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits content a lot!
Thank you! 🙏
Wow This is GOLD, like all your videos! Thanks man!
That's kind of you. It's my pleasure!
Keep doing what you're doing Phil, you are such a great teacher and creator! Your lessons are my shining light in learning MK songs 💚
Thanks so much. Made my day!
Love this adaptation for guitar. You’ve earned yourself a subscriber 👌🏻
Ah, that's fantastic. Thank you!
Thank you!!!😊
like mark himself 👍👍
i think at 10:46 there should be a d-minor chord …??
@indoorgolfbraunfels2682 you're right. It should run up from the C to Dm and on up to the F. I must have missed it. Great spot.
@@philcaffrey 🙂👍
Great videos. An you also post MK early 1-7 Thank you
Hi. Thank you so much. Very kind. I'm not sure what you mean by post early 1-7. I'm happy to add your request to the list - could you clarify? Thanks again.
Hi pPil. Are you strumming strings 1-4 ? And are you using just two fingers or more?
Essa música é linda!
Obrigado. É um dos meus favoritos. Adoro jogar e é ótimo poder compartilhá-lo com você.
Interesting how you have less than 1K views. The kids are addicted to gear, not actually playing. It’s a super series you put together. I started playing in 67. But MK kept me playing in 79 because I felt disjointed from the trend. Van Halen high gain etc and the advent of pedals. I started emulating the new “Three Kings” MK, Summers &Marr. (Jimmy Scott unfortunately didn’t hang around enough to be included). My long winded point is have you noticed that when he was high on speed he used this technique lightning fast to allow Withers to catch up with him. Rockpalast etc being a good example. Like a Rodgers chuck. Anyway good luck to you, in the distant future the kids will be crawling all over this 👍🏻
Thanks a million for that. It can be a bit frustrating when sleeping cats and talking dogs get millions of views and someone trying to put out decent content that takes a lot of time gets a few hundred. That said, I see it as my small contribution to the legacy of one of the greats and I'll keep going as long as I can. Thanks for your support!
Thanks Phil! This has really improved my playing of this song Quick question- it sounds like you have a little delay effect when you play,. how do you set that?
Hi Jamey - that's great news. Every little helps as they say. Re the delay, great spot. I always have a bit of delay on my guitar to fill it out. I have the delay set at somewhere between 250 and 500ms depending on taste/type of song/music I'm playing, feedback/repeats are set so I get maybe 3 or 4 audible repeats and then the whole thing goes quite low in the mix. As I say, I use it for body (a little bit like an extra reverb or even instead of reverb) rather than having it very overt like Dave Gilmour or The Edge. It's worth playing around with settings. My general view is that as soon as you start noticing it, there is too much - it should almost be subliminal if you get my drift. Hope that helps.
@@philcaffrey wonderful advice! Thanks and thanks for this great tutorial! So helpful!
Your lessons so good, so professional. Best of the best. Can you make lesson for song Skateaway?
Thank you very much. That mate my day. Skateaway is next on the list. 👍👍
Fantastic work.
Hi Phil I have enjoyed your series of MK. Could you make a video of how to set up the Yamaha THR to get MK’s sound you mention adding some compression?
Thanks Phil , great Tutorial , very helpful. It's such a lovely tune .....going home !🤗🎸🎷
Thank you! That's so nice of you. I agree, Going Home is beautiful.
Thank a lot for all the stuff you post on your channel!
Excellent
Cheers Carl!
Good lord man, this is by far the best tutorial of Setting Me Up I've ever seen. I've been obsessed with mastering this song for a long time, looking forward to practicing this way because the way I learned was in open G tuning and there are some differences for sure - this version sounds much closer to the original recording. Nice playing, and thanks for posting!
Made my day - cheers!
Such a great song! Somehow it always sounded out of reach of my guitar playing skills but it is completely doable thanks to this lesson. Knopfler uses chord shapes a lot to easily play triads and harmonies. Once you start to recognize those patterns in his solos they start to make a lot more sense and you can understand why they sounds so good.
Brilliant. I'm glad that the video has helped. You are 100% spot on in what you say about chord shapes - you have absolutely found the key to unlock MKs style of playing. The sky's the limit! Enjoy. 👍👍
Excellent work Paul, and so awesome that you did this song, it is among the top three or four most underrated Straits tunes and one of my favourites. If you do another classic anytime soon my vote would be for Skateaway!!!
Could you please do a tutorial of southbound again??
Hi Tim. I definitely think that's a great one to do. On the list! Cheers.
Brilliant!!!
Thank you!
Great lesson Phil, love the rhythm on this song, it's so hypnotic, and i think i've got it nailed, just need to make it a bit more smoother, next will be to put it into my looper pedal that i haven't yet used and solo over it.
Great stuff Paul. I agree, the rhythm on this song is really lovely and the idea of the looper is brilliant - I did exactly the same when preparing for the video. Be ready to lose a few hours of your day.... It's very addictive. 👍👍
Great lesson Phil. Would love a lesson like this on Wild West End if you were up for it. There are a few channels available that show the rhythm but none that teach the lead.
Great idea Simon. I'll get it on the list to do soon. I was lucky enough to see Wild West End played by DS in 1980 as an encore to a brilliant gig in Lancaster - I was 15 and it has had a profound impact on my life. What a man MK is.
Fantastico. Muchas gracias.
De nada! 👍👍
This is amazing Paul! Thank you!
Ah, thank you. It's my pleasure. 👍👍
Gem of a teacher. 🙏
Thanks Gandalf - made my day! Cheers
Thank you Phil!! Love this song but never liked the way I played it, I've always used to bar with my index in the verse and the sliding was sloppy now I can get it right.
Thanks Berto - that's great. I'm glad it had helped a little. Thanks for being in touch. It really makes my day.
Wonderful video thank you! And wonderful song choice, as you said, "quintessential" early Dire Straits.
Thank you so much. I agree, this is one of my firm favourites too. 👍👍
Difficult to not like any of the classics, Phil. I have to catch up with your tutorials... And thanks for sharing another great one! Did you use the THR amp to record it? Have a great weekend!
@@pablo963 Hi Pablo. I agree. Even some of the lesser known oldies are really special. Have fun catching up. 👍👍
Beautifully played with a lovely feel 😊 👏
Thank you. That's very kind of you. 👍👍
Good🎉
Beautiful lesson. Thank you. Count me subscribed.
Thankyou so much for the tutoriel. Its very interesting. Id love to hear more
Ah, that's so kind Jennifer. Stay tuned - they will be more.
Pretty cool
HELLO from guam u.s.a. phil, i have been working on this for about 3 months now and although i have not conquered it yet, it really is a confidence builder and helped me get out of that intermediate player 'rut' if you will, you know the one where you know your making progress but not sure where to take it to next, when i get a good handle on this i'm sure i can learn to play anything, ROCK ON SIR!
Hi David. Wow! Thank you so much for your comment - and for the coffee! The reason I make these videos is to share this great music with other like minded folks and so to get a note like yours really makes it all worthwhile. I find that even after more than 40 years of playing Sultans and others, Ican still find ways to improve and that's the beauty of MKs music, so it's fantastic to know that you're on that journey with me. Happy practising and thanks again.
Wrong!! Must play that with fingers ,not with pick!
It's a little more nuanced than wrong or right. On the studio version, a pick is used with the acoustic guitar. In early live versions e.g. Rockpalast 1979, MK plays the opening on his Strat with no pick. In slightly later live versions, Hal Lindes took the opening on his Strat but with a pick. So I don't think you can simply say "wrong". The beauty of MKs music is that it lends itself to many different ways of playing/arrangement - often the sign of good writing in my view. Perhaps you might take a slightly less binary view in your comments - I think you'll enjoy the music much more if you open your mind to that. Thanks for being in touch.
@@philcaffrey 1983 in Zagreb he played with his fingers
@dycave was that on acoustic? I suspect it was on Strat. On the acoustic, on the album he uses a pick. That's why in this video, on an acoustic, I use a pick. In 1980, Lancaster, it was also a pick, but on Strat. Both are fine. Not sure what the problem is that you have with this?
I am very impressed. Thank you for this great lesson!!!
It's my pleasure. Thank you for being in touch. 👍👍
Cheers Phil - this is without doubt the '*_best of the best;_* guitar lessons on the Toob ... & believe me there are some very good one's out there - but they don't hold a candle to this one ... since I first heard this Masterpiece of a song in circa 1978, I've always thought of it as a work of art of vaulting genius - & I rate MK very highly in the pantheon of Top Ten Masters of the guitar - clearly you're impressed with MK & I'm wondering if you have any insights into the formative factors which made him such a unique guitarist - of which the UK has produced many; ... Allan Holdsworth is widely believed to be the greatest Master of the guitar who has ever lived - & as you would be aware Albert Lee, Mick Taylor, Mick Green & of course Eric all have their legions of Devotees ... but MK seems to me to be almost in a class of his own - I'm intrigued as to how he got there!!
Thanks Peter. I really appreciate your comment - made my day. I agree with your thoughts on MK - just seems to have ploughed his very own and very deep furrow. A unique man .
