In May 2017, my wife and I and a few friends drove from Guangdong to Lhasa, Tibet, and back via Qinghai and Chengdu. The whole journey took 21 days. It is a travel experience that I am proud of in my life.
I am 80. Tibet was on my bucket list since I was 60. Most people advised me not to go. I really appreciate your video, the best I have seen so far. It was so real, honest and informative. I definitely can not make it now. I feel like that I have fulfil my bucket list. Looking forward to part 2.
My mother, who was 76, with high blood pressure and diabetes, visited Shangri LA via Kunming and she suffered no ill effects. The trick is to take things easy, walk slowly, talk softly and give yourself time to acclimatise. Always have a small canister of oxygen nearby. May be you can try Shangri La if Tibet is out of reach. Best wishes to you.
The plateau is friendly to the elderly, but young people are prone to altitude reaction. Many Chinese elderly people have no problem going to Tibet. I have also met many elderly people taking road trips together.
@@justme6275 Having high blood pressure is still not a good idea unless it's well controlled with medicine. The atmosphere is thinner at high altitude thus atmospheric pressure is lower than at sea level. You can see it with a well sealed bag of chips from sea level and how it enlarged like a balloon.
For friends who go to the plateau area for the first time, it is best to ask a tour guide to accompany you. This requirement has nothing to do with your nationality, because improper handling of altitude sickness will lead to life danger. This is really not a joke, and the tour guide knows where to provide emergency assistance.

@@josieliftsthings "halfway" in terms of altitude but not in oxygen concentration. That's the catch. Oxygen is the heavier gas in the atmosphere so it concentrates more at low altitudes.
Decades ago my GF and I took a rather long and rough bus ride from Golmud (格尔木) to Lhasa. It probably did help us to slowly adjust. We had already spent some time at altitude in Qinghai. Flying straight to Lhasa must be a shock to the body.
Tibet is truly beautiful! haven't been there yet but every time i see tibet on social media, the views make me cry. the mountains, the grass the people there are amazing!
On the other hand, the guide is a monitor, too. Why does the Chinese government ask foreigners to hire a local tour guide?it's not for job opportunity, it is a bondsman who will be punished when you have done something they dislike. A local tour guide can understand subtle taboo subject, and avoid it without a trace.

This video reminds me of traveling to tibet ten years age, all the things that you get through there are so familiar. Things has been changed in ten years, but tibet is still a very well-deserved place to visit.
I went there 17 years ago. Back then things were less commercialized and more natural, including washrooms along the highways😅. The food weren't great but acceptable to a Han stomach. Things are a lot more modern now but also commercialized.

It's free to access for foreigners before. However, some countries instigated Tibet's independence. so after that, all foreigners have to apply for a permit before entering it.
hmmm... one has question her sincerity about keeping an open mind despite what she read as biased in the media when say she couldn't ignore "the obvious signs of confirmation of those biases" (43:30). I wonder what are these biases ?? She also said Tibetans faced "uncertainties" (44:00). She should just say it out openly what these "biases & uncertainties" are, instead of being vague & cryptic.🙄 She should also have read up on a phenomena called 'confirmation bias' so she can be more aware she does not get afflicted with it by this trip in Tibet.

I have been to Sichuan and Yunnan, but haven’t got a chance to Tibet. China is out of my imagination, now I truly believe the world would have a better future because of China.
1) Half of Sichuan is Tibet. and yunnan too. 2) China is killing innocent Tibetans and imprisoning them for no good reasons. 3) Tibetans are 85% farmers and make a living by trading mushrooms and special insect that is used for medicine by chinese. 4) Recently a big Tibetan school was forcefully closed by china for no reason. 80% of Tibetan kids are forced to go to chinese boarding schools far away from home and there they learn only chinese and chinese history and culture.Most times onlty a few weeks they see parents every 3 months or so. 5) Tibetan monasteries and villages are being destroyed because china wanted to build a dam(that could destroy nearby nature and water) but most times the dam never comes and the village is already destroyed and monastery too.Leaving small monks and normal without education of tibetan history, religion or culture. The ones who protest against anything what china has to say go to jail or die. 6) Tibetans who protest against anything what china has to say go to jail or die.Or even saying Tibet is great or having HH Dalai Lama picture.Also being patriotic is illegal for tibetans. 7) 1,4 million tibetans killed in less than a decade by chinese invasion.Still counting! 8) China spread fake news to justify their occupying of tibet by saying there was slavery but there was no proof.Tibetans serfed the Dalai Lama and they called this slavery. China had way worse slavery and still has slavery till this day. Child labors or labor camps for Uyghurs and Tibetans. 9) When china invaded Tibet no one wanted them. That's why 1 in every 6 tibetans died that time.Tanks vs farmers.Still this day no tibetan wants them. 10) People say Tibet is now better than what it used to be because of china but that is not the reason.If tibet was independent it would have been better than nowadays where tibetans are still farmers and have less chance to make good money.Tibet is in central asia with himalaya that tourism alone would make good income for tibet. Was Michael in china?? Oh wow it’s definitely because of that gutter oil. I knew they’d get sick eating in china. They literally take oil from the gutters to fry their food. Look it up on RUclips. It is not altitude sickness.
For those who have never lived at high altitude, over 3000m, flying into Lhasa 3600m is not a good idea. It takes about 5 days to adapt to the atmosphere. I took the train from Xining Qihai which is already at about 3000m, and I still had high altitude sickness the first few days in Lhasa. I had to really slow down movement to avoid short of breath. Keep taking the O2 is not a good idea, because you aren't adapting yourself to the new atmosphere. Using the O2 should be for serious headache and purple nails only, a sign of serious lack of oxygen in the body.
I love Josie. She is trying so hard to bring the content to us. Seeing Tibet through her. I can sense that she is panting a lot. The high altitude and the massive amount of walking are really not easy for Josie. Kudos🎉

I’m sorry that Michael struggled so much, but I think it was wise for him to take breaks and to go back to the hotel. For me, this is great vicarious travel because I don’t think I will ever make it to Tibet at my age and with my health, but I can still experience it through your eyes and your lens….

You are allowed into Tibet, you are free to visit places and record video as a foreigner, local people there seem to be happy and living their lives, streets are clean, trees are green, businesses and shops everywhere, so not everyone was put in a camp as per western media, was it. A friendly foreigner with no bias against China is welcome everywhere in China, and I’m sure you will receive the warmest hospitality from Chinese people in return

Those who can visit are often admired for their courage and determination.
I studied and then lived in Sydney for almost 10 years. When I got back to my motherland China, First thing I did was by visiting Tibet in 2015. Back on those days, altitude sickness almost killed me, But I finally won the battle for life struggling. People said, when travelling in Tibet, the body feels like in hell while your version is definitely in heaven, I do guarantee it is true. Once you step on that field, the stunning views will impress your by both physical and emotional ways.
Are you sure that's the reason? Not because Tibetan people want independence from China and China doesn't want people helping them? Soon the same thing will be happening to Taiwan. I really can't believe you actually think Tibet is high security because China wants to protect it from the US 🤣 China is trying to prevent Tibet from gaining help from the US. Tibet, Taiwan and The Uyghurs, If you take time to learn about their stories you will understand that China and the CCP are devils. If you don't care for any of that and believe it's just territorial wars then how about how China treats their own civilians? Have you heard about their forced organ harvesting?
I really like this series, rural China is the gem. The reason Tibet is restricted to foreigners is there have been a lot of foreign spy agencies send people there to plan and launch a separation movement. Chinese government doesn’t really stop people to visit Tibet if they just simply explore the culture, like you. In the uk, where I’m staying, and the states, I often see people holding a Tibet flag, they made that as so called “national” flag referring Tibet as a country instead of a province in China, protesting along the road where a country leader visits. Those people who have been instigated are still active overseas with the back of some western counties. Basically a lot of countries want China to be divided into a lot of different small countries like the former soviet unions. Then China could be massively slashed in economy and military power to make no rivals to other countries. Most of the weird policies to foreigners in China could be traced down to what foreign agencies did in China. China is just trying to protect himself from outside harm, aka self defence. Hope you can embrace the weirdness and enjoy your rural journey in China. Best wishes.
That's not entirely the reason. Too many travelers have died. Altitude sickness, no man's land and severe cold can kill people, as well as religion and culture in Tibet. So we need a guide.
I don't think there is a country that really puts the people as much as China. As long as you know the geographical location of Tibet, you will know how much the Chinese government loves Tibet. There is still a 5G network at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters, and the hydropower facilities are perfect. These projects are very difficult.
China loves Tibet people so much it destroys their culture, tells them who they must follow and calls their spiritual leader a terrorist and a separatist. It is also not adverse to killing them if you know your history. These dumb tourists do not.
It’s not like we had a choice. China invaded Tibet and then did whatever they wanted. The fact that there is 5g and nice technology is only because Chinese government wants to have all the technology and equipment they need to keep an eye on the Tibetans. Tibet is one of the most amazing and mysterious places I ever been to, even as a Chinese. You guys should go check out the Namtso Lake at 5000m which is breathtakingly beautiful, and also give you a challenge to your body. Also, basecamp of Mount Everest is a top destination in Tibet as well. Also you can try the bullet train from Lhasa to Nynchi which is the highest bullet train in the world and have amazing views along the way. Enjoy your Epic journey in Tibet! the reason for the guide requirement is for safety. they are suppose to accompany you when you head out of town because lots parts are remote and if you get severe altitude sickness and alone, you would be kind of screwed.
I think also more than that. When there were no permits or guides required decades ago, I personally heard from foreign evangelical missionaries boasting how they stuffed the prayers wheels with Christian tracts as they go along to all the holy sites and temples in Tibet. Not very Christian in my eyes!
@@jasonyap7634 there are other reasons but I didn't want to get too political. people from certain western countries have to excuse the small inconvenience incurred in their travels in some parts of china. you have to understand for example the cia has been documented for inciting riots and terrorism within chinese soil including tibet and more recently hong kong. certain countries including the one these two are from constantly smear china with lies any which way and any time possible and use their media as propaganda tools. the usa also removed a once labeled terrorist organization from their terrorist list, and extremist organization that sent people to the kunming train station and hacked innocent people with machetes resulting in dozens of deaths. I can go on and on but I think people should get the point about security check inconveniences.

I ve been to Tebet twice and it's absolutely my most favourite place on this planet, I even want to do a sky burial when my day comes but not sure if there's some brave driver who can drive my body somewhere that can do it hahaha. All I want to say is thank you for making this genuine video with authenticity and respect, you absolutely show no discrimination and you're honest with everything. Last but not least, about altitude sickness, my guide once told me that a slim female suffers least from altitude, so that means if you were a male and especially a strong or robust one, you're more likely to suffer from altitude sickness since you need more oxygen, a little tip for those want to travel to plateau like Tibet, DO NOT think you're strong so won't suffer.

As someone who have been to Tibet plateau dozens of times, I fully understand how altitude sickness kicks in. A lot of people talks about taking some sort of pills...that is really not the key. First, avoid sudden body workout, don't stand up like you would in lower altitude, take your time, do everything slowly and force yourself breath deeper. Try to have more veges and fruits, and less protein-rich food to help digestion. It is kinda unfortunate that heavier people are more likely to suffer from severe altitude sickness, because your body ask more oxygen to maintain itself. So the key is still making less movement, eat accordingly, and use oxygen.
In fact, the main reason is that there are many uninhabited areas, and people are afraid that some people will run around, get lost, have no mobile phone signal, or encounter altitude sickness. No one will rescue them in time, and no one will know where they died. There have been several such incidents.😂 So need a tour guide.🤣🤣🤣🤣Have fun❤
same situation as North Korea, I often hear tourists are easy to get lost there too, so the governments always send tour guy to keep eye tourists to make sure they see what they need to see 😂 maybe rest of countries should do the same to Chinese too cuz there are so much Chinese hate all around the world now, better send security guards with Chinese tourists to make sure they are safe when they traveling 😅
@@ahlalamo Tibet is too big, with too many uninhabited areas. Curious people like to wander around alone. When they are thirsty, they can't find the village, their cell phones have no signal, they get lost, and the temperature difference between day and night is huge. Then they die of thirst or freezing.

The plateau is friendly to the elderly, but young people are prone to altitude reaction. Many Chinese elderly people have no problem going to Tibet. I have also met many elderly people taking road trips together.

The atmosphere is thinner at high altitude thus atmospheric pressure is lower than at sea level. You can see it with a well sealed bag of chips from sea level and how it enlarged like a balloon.
For friends who go to the plateau area for the first time, it is best to ask a tour guide to accompany you. This requirement has nothing to do with your nationality, because improper handling of altitude sickness will lead to life danger. This is really not a joke, and the tour guide knows where to provide emergency assistance.

Guys, this is retrospect only but you should have taken the train into tibet because that would give you more time to adjust to the high altitude.
Totally, we should have done that or maybe spent more time in Kunming - we spent about 24 hours there as it was “half way” altitude wise ☺️

Decades ago my GF and I took a rather long and rough bus ride from Golmud (格尔木) to Lhasa. It probably did help us to slowly adjust. We had already spent some time at altitude in Qinghai. Flying straight to Lhasa must be a shock to the body.

I went there 17 years ago. Back then things were less commercialized and more natural, including washrooms along the highways😅. The food weren't great but acceptable to a Han stomach. Things are a lot more modern now but also commercialized.

Was Michael in china?? Oh wow it’s definitely because of that gutter oil. I knew they’d get sick eating in china. They literally take oil from the gutters to fry their food. Look it up on RUclips. It is not altitude sickness.
For those who have never lived at high altitude, over 3000m, flying into Lhasa 3600m is not a good idea. It takes about 5 days to adapt to the atmosphere.
I took the train from Xining Qihai which is already at about 3000m, and I still had high altitude sickness the first few days in Lhasa. I had to really slow down movement to avoid short of breath. Keep taking the O2 is not a good idea, because you aren't adapting yourself to the new atmosphere. Using the O2 should be for serious headache and purple nails only, a sign of serious lack of oxygen in the body.
I love Josie. She is trying so hard to bring the content to us. Seeing Tibet through her. I can sense that she is panting a lot. The high altitude and the massive amount of walking are really not easy for Josie. Kudos🎉

I studied and then lived in Sydney for almost 10 years. When I got back to my motherland China, First thing I did was by visiting Tibet in 2015. Back on those days, altitude sickness almost killed me, But I finally won the battle for life struggling. People said, when travelling in Tibet, the body feels like in hell while your version is definitely in heaven, I do guarantee it is true. Once you step on that field, the stunning views will impress your by both physical and emotional ways.

I really like this series, rural China is the gem.
The reason Tibet is restricted to foreigners is there have been a lot of foreign spy agencies send people there to plan and launch a separation movement. Chinese government doesn’t really stop people to visit Tibet if they just simply explore the culture, like you. In the uk, where I’m staying, and the states, I often see people holding a Tibet flag, they made that as so called “national” flag referring Tibet as a country instead of a province in China, protesting along the road where a country leader visits. Those people who have been instigated are still active overseas with the back of some western counties. Basically a lot of countries want China to be divided into a lot of different small countries like the former soviet unions. Then China could be massively slashed in economy and military power to make no rivals to other countries. Most of the weird policies to foreigners in China could be traced down to what foreign agencies did in China. China is just trying to protect himself from outside harm, aka self defence. Hope you can embrace the weirdness and enjoy your rural journey in China. Best wishes.
That's not entirely the reason. Too many travelers have died. Altitude sickness, no man's land and severe cold can kill people, as well as religion and culture in Tibet. So we need a guide.

I don't think there is a country that really puts the people as much as China. As long as you know the geographical location of Tibet, you will know how much the Chinese government loves Tibet. There is still a 5G network at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters, and the hydropower facilities are perfect. These projects are very difficult.
China loves Tibet people so much it destroys their culture, tells them who they must follow and calls their spiritual leader a terrorist and a separatist.
It is also not adverse to killing them if you know your history.

more of a resource rich and untapped area that didn't go through the dynasties' wars and battles like the rest of the world that are much more accessible throughout history. Theyre building high speed rail to make it more accessible for the locals as wells as letting coastal metropolis citizens to access it or to travel out of tibet. which wasn't accessible prior due to the complex topography

Tibet is one of the most amazing and mysterious places I ever been to, even as a Chinese. You guys should go check out the Namtso Lake at 5000m which is breathtakingly beautiful, and also give you a challenge to your body. Also, basecamp of Mount Everest is a top destination in Tibet as well. Also you can try the bullet train from Lhasa to Nynchi which is the highest bullet train in the world and have amazing views along the way. Enjoy your Epic journey in Tibet! I really admire your courage to go to Tibet as a foreigner as it’s such a remote place .

the reason for the guide requirement is for safety. they are suppose to accompany you when you head out of town because lots parts are remote and if you get severe altitude sickness and alone, you would be kind of screwed.
I think also more than that. When there were no permits or guides required decades ago, I personally heard from foreign evangelical missionaries boasting how they stuffed the prayers wheels with Christian tracts as they go along to all the holy sites and temples in Tibet. Not very Christian in my eyes!
@@jasonyap7634 there are other reasons but I didn't want to get too political. people from certain western countries have to excuse the small inconvenience incurred in their travels in some parts of china. you have to understand for example the cia has been documented for inciting riots and terrorism within chinese soil including tibet and more recently hong kong. certain countries including the one these two are from constantly smear china with lies any which way and any time possible and use their media as propaganda tools. the usa also removed a once labeled terrorist organization from their terrorist list, and extremist organization that sent people to the kunming train station and hacked innocent people with machetes resulting in dozens of deaths. I can go on and on but I think people should get the point about security check inconveniences.

I ve been to Tebet twice and it's absolutely my most favourite place on this planet, I even want to do a sky burial when my day comes but not sure if there's some brave driver who can drive my body somewhere that can do it hahaha. All I want to say is thank you for making this genuine video with authenticity and respect, you absolutely show no discrimination and you're honest with everything. Last but not least, about altitude sickness, my guide once told me that a slim female suffers least from altitude, so that means if you were a male and especially a strong or robust one, you're more likely to suffer from altitude sickness since you need more oxygen, a little tip for those want to travel to plateau like Tibet, DO NOT think you're strong so won't suffer.

As someone who have been to Tibet plateau dozens of times, I fully understand how altitude sickness kicks in. A lot of people talks about taking some sort of pills...that is really not the key. First, avoid sudden body workout, don't stand up like you would in lower altitude, take your time, do everything slowly and force yourself breath deeper. Try to have more veges and fruits, and less protein-rich food to help digestion. It is kinda unfortunate that heavier people are more likely to suffer from severe altitude sickness, because your body ask more oxygen to maintain itself. So the key is still making less movement, eat accordingly, and use oxygen.
In fact, the main reason is that there are many uninhabited areas, and people are afraid that some people will run around, get lost, have no mobile phone signal, or encounter altitude sickness. No one will rescue them in time, and no one will know where they died. There have been several such incidents.😂
So need a tour guide.🤣🤣🤣🤣Have fun❤
same situation as North Korea, I often hear tourists are easy to get lost there too, so the governments always send tour guy to keep eye tourists to make sure they see what they need to see 😂 maybe rest of countries should do the same to Chinese too cuz there are so much Chinese hate all around the world now, better send security guards with Chinese tourists to make sure they are safe when they traveling 😅
@@ahlalamo Tibet is too big, with too many uninhabited areas. Curious people like to wander around alone. When they are thirsty, they can't find the village, their cell phones have no signal, they get lost, and the temperature difference between day and night is huge. Then they die of thirst or freezing.
