Bonnie Pointer had three top 100 solo singles which didn't make it to #1. After his breakup with Creedence, John Fogarty had 9 top 100 singles including ""The Old Man Down the Road" which reached #10. Eric Burdon did manage to reach #1 before War with the Animals, "House of the Rising Sun" Springsteen and the Pointer Sisters were part of USA for Africa, and, of course, "We Are the World" hit #1.
Springsteen was the subject to a Jeopardy game show error on this topic. The answer was "Never wrote a US #1 record". They listed Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and two other artists I can't remember who had #1 records. They wanted the contestant to say "Who was Bruce Springsteen?", because he was the only one of the four who didn't have any of his own records reach #1. But the answer specifically said "wrote", and they had forgotten Bruce had written "Blinded by the Light".

Physical kept Foreigners "Waiting for a Girl Like You" put of the #1 spot for 10 weeks, not Journey.
"Physical" kept "Waiting for a girl like you" out of the No. 1 spot for 9 weeks (when it first hit #1, the No. 2 song was "Private eyes").
