Pete, I love that Tull T-shirt you're wearing! I am a huge JT fan.
Probably my overall favorite Tull album!
Pete - it's not over yet! Ian has announced that Steven Wilson completed a remix of the live "Bursting Out" album. The bookset is scheduled for release in 2024. In recent months, Ian's been talking about the possibility of a deluxe reissue for "Under Wraps", assuming the label has interest. In any case, it no longer seems to be out of the question. "Under Wraps" would pair well with the solo Anderson "Walk Into Light" album and live recordings from the same era.
Strange, as the live shows on Songs from the Wood and Heavy Horses deluxe box sets are from the shows that Bursting Out was taken from, haven't we already got it?
I think Under Wraps and Walk Into Light are very deserving of a deluxe treatment. It may even serve to warm the public up for reconsidering them artistically. "A" sort of got a notch up to many people who gave the box set a try. If Ian has a real drummer play the parts for say, a bonus disc version, it might bring a lot of interest.
@@DropAnchor1978 It's my least favourite Tull album, but I would at least give a remix a chance. I've heard live shows from that era, and Pete is right that they are pretty good.
Where did you hear that? Like it was said, the live album was represented in the other box sets
@@NP-ip3nj I understand anyone who finds Under Wraps a less-than-satisfying detour in the Tull catalog. I was one of them, back in 1984, who scratched his head and felt a pang because an awaited album failed to live up to what I hoped. It took me four years later to warm up to what it was on its own terms.
This is one of my favorite Tull albums. I got it when it was new and it was the first one I got as a new release. I only had two Best of albums before this one came out. This 40th Anniversary edition is magnificent! So glad to have finally gotten it!
I'd like a box ser for Rock Island just because I saw that tour. And I'd like to hear a live show from 1989/1990 so I could relive it.
Loved Rock Island and played it in heavy rotation
Crazy idea. Ian adds a bunch of acoustic and flute and totally remixes Under Wraps with real drums as well.
This was the first Tull album I loved. 1982. I was 13 and my parents bought good headphones for the `70`s hifi system. I listened to this over and over. So I`m very excited to get my vinyl version of this set. I may have bought the Cd version but with no visual content to watch, I`ll stick to the vinyl. Great episode. I always enjoy Mr. Reid`s input.
Well worth it excellent value for money ❤
Saw Tull during this tour 1982. Great show. Ranks as one of my favorite concerts.
Like most people hate how the discs are stored on this particular set, with constant use, I think the clips at the bottom will break. And of course the way you take them out, the chance of scratching the discs, are quite high. What I have done is bought plastic sleeves, and store the discs in the loosely, three per side, and just close the set gently. Thanks for the review the both of you,
My favourite Tull album. Besides the vinyl I had the cassette in one of those oversized cases that would never fit in anything.
Only time I saw Tull was at MK Bowl supporting Marillion. Never expected them to play Beastie, my favourite track. Made my day when they did.
This and Rock Island are my 2 of my favorites, but I love them all.
Great review as always Pete made better as Broadsword was the first Tull album i ever bought. Think every single fan that has bought this boxset has had the same problem, which is getting the discs out and in. Really we shouldn't be nit picking such marvellous boxsets but it's hard not to, and I'm a stickler for how anything is packaged and these sets are quality boxes without any doubt, but still not perfect in my eyes. Some artists and labels put a lot of thought, time, and money, into producing these things so should we complain ? Yes hahaha.
A most informative video , thank you gentlemen !
I've just received my copy , so thank you for the primer .
I did go see them during the Under Wraps tour , and you're correct Pete , those songs sounded much better live , with real drums .
I would be in for a remix with a real drummer , even if it's a scaled back 2 disc set .
I would also be up for Crest of Knave , right through to Roots to Branches remixes .
Finger crossed .
Cheers !!!!
I love this album, especially listening through headphones. I wasn’t aware of the reissue so will check it out.
Couldn't resist getting the new boxset either. Only listened to the first 3 CDs so far. Must say I'm not a fan of the mechanism that holds the discs - Still figuring out how it works and I get the feeling that one might actually scratch them if not used properly.
I can't stand how the CDs are held into place either.
Frank. / the way I’m ocd. About my CDs. =. That’s a no do - no do for me. Lol 👍💯
Very poor marketing idea. Especially in our fast paced world 🌎 with zero patience/ word gets out about that = cost of numerous sales Imo. $$$$$$$
@@garyjoyce2160 Agreed 100% Gary. Hope Ian and co. fix that problem in future boxsets.
They should take notes from Pete. A CD that comes in a page/envelope of the boxset would be a good alternative. In addition to the traditional CD holder
This is my favorite Tull album. As soon as it start I am off into some fantasy world with dwarves and elves. Probably because I heard it a lot when I was about 14.
Great review guys! Regarding Under Wraps, I saw an Ian interview just last week where he said he has suggested to the record company recording real drums for a remix, but he is waiting for a firm response. He also said he has the drummer in mind, so who knows? That would really improve the feel of Under Wraps.
Fingers crossed it ends up being Doane Perry.
@@adamsmashups4839 I wonder if Ian burned that bridge when he unceremoniously dumped Doane?
Thank you, gentleman.
Pete and Steve, Ian Anderson did say in an interview that he wants under wraps done in the book form, but the record company won’t change the programmed drums and put real drumming in the mix of the album. Ian requested if this to come out in the book form, but he hasn’t heard back from record Co. as of yet if they’ll agree to that.
This interview was on the RUclips channel Classic Album Review for anyone interested!
I wonder why the record company said that. Pink Floyd's remix of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason has re-recorded drums by Nick Mason.
Great review! I'm missing Minstrel and Passion Play so I hope they rerelease those. And redo Stand Up. And I would totally buy all the post-Broadsword albums in this format.
Finally, someone I know doing this set. I love it. It's the best thus far out of this series, I think. Also, I was wondering, Pete, if you ranked these sets, would the order be different than for just the Albums based on the manner, qualitiy and quantitiy of the Bonus Stuff?
I got in the JT box sets bandwagon a little late. Those I’ve been able to get my hands into are This Was, Benefit, Thick As A Brick, Stormwatch, A and finally Broadsword And The Beast, just bought recently. The TAAB boxset was reissued this year so I was able to buy it relatively cheap, about 45$ CAN on amazon. I hope Chrysalis and IA plan to do the same with the other ‘70’s albums boxsets that are OOP. I’m dying to get my hands on the box sets missing from my collection. That being said, yep, I also had issues with the CDs holders on that boxset. Took me a good 30-35 minutes to figure the thing out. Other than that, it’s another great boxset from JT. 😊
Me too, I’ve got 10 of the 14, and the 4 I’m missing are really expensive. I was almost at the point of paying like $600 for TAAB on eBay and kept holding off and it felt like a miracle when it was reissued and I got it for $30 or whatever. I sure wish I knew if there were plans to reissue others, have you heard?
I missed out on War Child. Would be nice for the 50th anniversary next year. BTW, were your cds scratched?
@@JIF882 they were fine, thank god.
Pete, Celsius is where zero degrees is freezing temp and 100 is boiling. Farenheit is 32 and 212 respectively. So it's a wider spread.
It's worth every penny. Great set.
The second box set of Tull able to be pre=ordered and was very happy to receive last week. Agreed that the disc packaging could stand improvement and appreciate Steven's show & tell about how to more easily get the ^&*! discs out. Thanks to you both for the review. A great addition to the Tull library.
Nice video
Fingers crossed for an Under Wraps book edition.Maybe they could include the Passaic NJ show. It's a very nice pro recording.
Why would you wish that album on us? Be kind.
@@FormulaProg Not everyone's favorite I know.
I bought the anniversary edition of Benefit, even though that album bores the Hell out of me.
If you like JT but you are more in vinyl, get the 4-LP Set. It includes the Album (Steven Wilson Remix) on 1 LP, the Session and Demos Material on 3 LP, but no live Concert. The Vinyl (all 4) sounds terrific. IMO the best of the Steven Wilson Remix Reissues.🖖
I'm not a fan here, alas. I'm a big Tull fan but this album is good at best to me I'll always prefer the original mixes anyway, that's all I need maybe remastered at the most not this little bit or that little bit separated and made louder or quieter. I've noticed the music is often up and the vocals in his Tull mixes are down, I hate that but it saves me a ton of money too...
I bought both the vinyl and digital versions of Broadsword and can attest that the vinyl sounds fantastic!
Peter Vettese was brilliant in Jethro Tull, definitely the best keyboard player that they ever had.
I'm really hoping that there will be an Under Wraps box set next year.. (btw, I do mean this)
My fave Tull album...
In 1988, Jethro Tull released a "Twenty Years of Jethro Tull" box set, and it included a lot of songs that fans like me had never heard of but which nonetheless were excellent songs. Many years later I found out that a REISSUE of Broadsword and the Beast had come out with SEVERAL of those songs on it as bonus tracks! I was delighted, and for the first time I REALLY wanted a copy of Broadsword, "The bonus tracks are better than the original album! " I declared. We are talking songs like Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow, Jack a Lynn, Too Many Too and several others.
I just got it yesterday. I love all the Tull boxes but this one is bulky and not user friendly hahaha. I had to put CD one in the place of the dvds in the inserts so that I won't ruin it. One more great edition of a Tull album. Thanks for this presentation. I am also giving a spin on the new Steven Wilson and Bruce Soord albums. Many new releases.
Under Wraps is also a perfect case for live songs waaayyyyy better than on the album 🙂
There are plenty of Catfish outtakes, see Nightcap. Long may these boxsets continue.
I've been looking forward to this one for years. It's part of my 3 way tie for favorite Tull (Minstrel and Roots) and of course we knew from the box sets and CD release there was a lot of extra tracks. It somehow still exceeded my expectations. I of course want this set to continue through Roots so I can get all 3 of my favorites, also that's the end of Tull "regularly" releasing albums and seems a logical end. But if this is it, I'm good. I think Wilson's mixes, especially within the Tull work, do a great job of finding "room". There always seems to be more separation of the instruments, can hear them all more clearly, yet not so far apart they aren't still interacting. He's magic. Oh and I'm definitely getting Under Wraps if it happens. Yeah it's a goofy album, but it has its moments. And Martin think it has his best work.
Roots...is one of my favorites,too.
Agreed on Roots to Branches. Excellent songs and fantastic production.
As a physicist, I must weigh in. The formula for changing from Fahrenheit to Celsius is (F − 32) × 5/9 = C. So 75 F is equivalent to (75-32)x5/9 give almost 24 C
Simple. Double and add 30. Also a Physics Graduate
Any chance you might review the Super Deluxe of 13th Star?🙏 Would love to hear your thoughts.
I got all excited and than realized its 13th star..I was thinking of Eighth Star..the Tony Iommi/Black Sabbath with Glenn Hughes album.
@@adamsmashups4839 Aww sorry mate. A very underrated album imo.
I think you mean Seventh Star…
@@seaoftranquilityprog Yes,yhat's the one.
Great discussion and really great set. Didn't like it at the time but Broadsword has gone up hugely in my estimation in the past year and this fantastic set, with so much additional material - so much of it so much better than what made it onto the album - just helps enormously in that regard. (Yes, why wasn't it at least a double album back in 1982?) Totally agree about Wilson's approach to remixing, generally, and on the Tull catalogue in particular. I have all of the Tull sets and his remixes are my go-to for everything. Broadsword sounds much brighter and airier, and has more depth, dynamics and bite, than the somewhat flat original.
As regards Under Wraps, Ian has come right out and said that he wants the programmed drumming ditched, to be replaced by a real drummer. Whether Parlophone agrees to stump up the cash for that remains to be seen. In the event they do, though, what also would remain to be see is whether Louis or Steven is more on the money about the quality of the actual songs. I think I am, overall, more inclined to agree with Steven but, honestly, I don't really know. It's just too hard to hear what might be there beneath the mud and monotonous thud of a massive 1980s production mis-step.
These sets are all about the surround sound mix, that's the main point of them. People moan about no video on the dvd's but the 5.1 isn't an extra, these box sets wouldn't exist without Anderson wanting to do the 5.1
Not familiar with this album - I may have to check it out. Regarding the later albums, such as Catfish Rising or Roots To Branches, I would love to see boxset releases. I think there would be some great live material to release along those box sets. I basically love the later Tull releases, in general.
One of the few who does like them then - good for you.
@@unchattytwit I think, a lot of times, one grows to love certain albums because of the time and place they first heard it. I don't know. Seemingly unremarkable songs like "Stuck In the August Rain" just grow on you. Reminds me of how I grew into Genesis' ...And Then There Were Three or Yes's Tormato.😁 Trust me, though, my favorite Jethro Tull is between Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play.
Totally agree. All the albums from '87-99 are solid and a couple are damn good. And even with Ian's weakening vocals at that time, they're light years better than what he's put out the last few years.
In the original vs remix discussion, how about the album Built to Destroy by the Michael Schenker Group? The original UK mix was then remixed for the US market including bringing in a different singer for some reason and highlighting the keyboards sometimes to the detriment of the guitar. The mixes are polar opposites and having both, I wish there was a remix between the two.
I think they are doing Bursting Out and Madison Square garden together. Anyway Pete keep up the good work. Name of your show,is it anything to do with the Barclay James Harvest song ?
Ian Anderson said in an interview ( I think in "Classic Album Review" @classicalbum ) that he would want to release "Under Wraps" in an expanded remix if the label agrees to fund a real drummer to replace the programmed electronic drums of the album, and so far that seems to be in discussion as it's pricey.
Multi-millionaire doesn't want to spend his own money. He should have asked Doane to do it years ago.
i'd fork over the $$ for a deluxe Rock Island. That was my first Tull album and dare I say, maybe my favorite.
I have everything Tull released and always kind of dismissed this, not any more, this set made me listen to it more than I ever have before and I now love it.. Thanks for showing me how to get the CD's out Steven, I seriously thought I was going to break the book or the CD's getting them out.
Regarding Under Wraps, according to Ian there's not much of anything in the way of leftover tracks from the sessions for that album. The positive we can take away from this info is that a box set could be made at lower cost to the record company and the consumer. A two CD two DVD set would pretty much cover it. CD 1/the album remixed. CD 2/a live show from that tour. DVD 1/the surround and stereo remixes plus flat transfer of the original mix. DVD 2/a live concert video from the tour (preferably a show before Ian damaged his voice).
As for the original drum machine tracks, since hiring someone to record new acoustic drum tracks would be quite costly maybe modern technology would allow for better (as in, more natural) digital drum sounds to be inserted.
it'd need to be 3cd/2dvd as I'd want a complete show.
There is very nice pro shot show from that tour.I think it took place in Passaic New Jersey.
Awful disc holders aside, a belter of a set. Again.
With Bursting Out also getting the box set treatment next year...it really does seem the plan is to do the lot, after the initial plan of "just the 70s" was blown away by fan demand. A and Broadsword have sold much better than imagined. Crest sells itself ("The Grammy Edition") - then there's only a few after that anyway.
Bursting Out? Wow!
@@seaoftranquilityprog🤣
Davey, Steven Wilson also said in interviews that he wasn't initially familiar with the '80s albums, but he did get acquainted with them during covid.
@@seaoftranquilityprog Yup. Steven Wilson completed the mix already.
I'm hesitant to get this set. It seems like too much of a hassle with the discs. While watching this video, a realization came to me. Not only were Gerry Conway and Peter-John Vessttes on this album, but they also played with Cat Stevens at various times. Gerry was Cat's drummer in the '70s, and Peter played keyboards on the re-recording of Tea For The Tillerman. Interesting that Stephen is in this video. Ian Anderson was born in Scotland. Regarding Steven's comment about the lack of '70s material in the live set, Peter could have used a CS80 for organ sounds. Eddie Jobson did that on the A tour. On the outro of Aqualung, Eddie made his CS80 sound like a pipe organ.
Ian Anderson is from Blackpool
@@FormulaProg But born in Scotland
Ian's planning ( or is pushing for) a remixed ! and expanded version ( 2 CD's I think) of Under Wraps. Which sounds like the right format to me, possibly remixed 1 CD, the other live ( the gigs that tour were very good). Listening to the outtakes I think Ian made the right choices for the LP and for the length of it. Jack Frost and Jack-a Lynn ( the acoustic version on the single CD Rocks On The Road has to be better than Watching Me, Watching You) were the best outtakes IMHO - I can understand why the others weren't issued on an LP. Just a pity the next album wasn't in the same vein, the acoustic Under Wraps excepted - but that just goes to show much better the album could have been. The curse of fashion and trends.
And now I waiting for new mix Under Wraps without plastc sounds.. Steve/Ian , please! 😂
Waiting for Storm Watch remastered version
Came out years ago
Not a huge Jethro Tull fan, I just know the basics so figured I would leave this comment for the algorithm --> 75F = 24C
yea i was like they're way off, 35C would be pushing 100F here lol
I whole-heartedly agree on the thingies that hold the CDs. I hate those.
Not my favourite album from Tull by any means but these sets oh my, I got the book version and LP set 😅
To convert F>C, subtract 30 & half the remainder... close enough
75* Fahrenheit is NOT 35* Centigrade. It is only 23* C.
As stated, neither one of us knew what the conversion is....
@@seaoftranquilityprog here's how I calculate the conversions:
C = (F-32) x 5/9
F = (9/5 x C) + 32 [ or if you don't like fractions... F = (1.8 x C) + 32 ]
24°C
Wondering if Steven got the new deluxe reissue of Cardiacs Little Man? I did, its pretty awesome!
Somewhat off topic but 75 Fahrenheit is nowhere near 35 Celsius; it's closer to 22 Celsius. You take the Fahrenheit temperature, subtract 32, and then divide by 1.8 to get the equivalent in Celsius. Geek fact of the day.
You guys have it all wrong about the removal of the disc. From the centre hole of the first disc, push/slide down towards the bottom of the case and the disc easily slides out.😉
75 degrees fahrenheit is 23.88 degrees celcius
I was at the Theakston Music Festival. I enjoyed it, but was disappointed with the line up. The musicianship wasn't up to the standard of DP, JE & especially BB IMHO.
75 F = 23.88 C 😁
Tull always had a very good driving drummer. Craney was driving as much as Barlow. Conway sadly is not and you can tell something is lacking. The Broadsword songs are sounding way better live 🙂. Burgess, who'll replace Conway on the NA tour, is a better fit too I think.
Mine showed up broken so i’m storing them separately. My comfort lies in i would have brijen it anyway. All that aside. I love the album and extras and the live show brings back memories.
How about releasing just the actual album on vinyl without all the paraphernalia as they did for previous releases? For example Aqualung there is the remixed vinyl version with an outstanding book for just £35. This version is great for the uber fan with deep pockets but, for me, i do not have interest in outtakes, live recordings and all that other 'stuff'.
Fave Tull album for the last 40 years.
But what the hell is this Steven Wilson remix ?? Drums are crazy high in the mix. Renders it unlistenable. Should have left it as a remaster.
I love this album, but this is just a bloated cash grab. Very little new stuff here and they're charging roughly twice what the other boxed sets went for. Hack Wilson's remixes certainly aren't worth it. I'd go $49 for this, but not $80. "Under Wraps" is better than at least 3 other Tull albums, so why not do a reissue? As for the weather, it was 98 (37 Celsius) here today in south Mississippi.
For most people, there certainly is plenty of new stuff here.
20 Celsius is about 70 Fahrenheit!
