I think Sonic 1 8-bit is way better in terms of gameplay and overall is structured better. I think if Ancient made Sonic 2 instead of Aspect, it would have been a much better game. IMO aspect got it right with chaos and triple trouble.
Chaos sucked tho. Easily the worst 8bit sonic. TT wasnt too bad, but the made a mess of the graphics compared to the first one. Their attempt at improving the look had the opposite effect. IMO the Mechanics of TT with the look of the original would have made it better.
However it is way easier and can be considered a breather after sonic 2 and before you get into triple trouble
Sonic 2 is the worst 8-bit game. Too many flaws that ruin the experience. Sonic Chaos was easy, but largely inoffensive.
Sonic Chaos is awful though
Sonic Chaos is easy, short and a little bland perhaps, but awful is a little strong. You make it sound like it's unplayable. I'll take the former over the latter any day.
I think in the bad ending Sonic is thinking about Tails and how he’s still gonna save him somehow, and therefore seeing him in the sky. But in the good ending they see themselves in the sky and thinking about how they can live happily ever after.
The endings are fucked.
What.?
DOESN T MAKE FUCKING SENSE !!!!!
I don't think that's true because it's on the game gear as well and there's no chaos emeralds and he got someone got to good ending
Makes total sense
"The predecessor was around... In Europe anyway."
Brazil, Australia & South Korea: *WHAT?*
yeah,thanks TecToy
The Brazil, Australia, South Korea is here
Thank you sonic but your fox is in another zone
Just like speggethy guy
@Jeremy Jeremy clyke jr. Really? We had no idea (sarcasm)
Tails is not a fox
@@theresajohnson148 then what is he?
:)) hehehehehehe
This was the first game that I ever owned. I always wondered how you could play as Tails. Turns out, 28 years after it's release, I had to hack him into the game myself. Also, I did a better job at the loop animation, smooth and no broken ankles for Tails.
2:50 That happens in Sonic the Fighters, too.
The game is over, you beat it, it’s a good game over, not a *you-ran-out-of-lives-and-died* game over.
Its actually to reset the game
Yeah like the game is finished
4:50 Wait a sec, invincibility doesn’t allow you to die from bottomless pits?
*We have a winner on the best version of sonic*
Apparently yeah... Ok no there was an oversight during the development of Sky High Zone... And so, it's kinda like a pit of spikes that you can't see: you don't even die while normal... You just lose a few rings
CobaltDrawsStuff a few? You mean all
Also one of the best invincible themes
I loved this game back then and I still do now.
It's an excellent sequel to the Master System's original Sonic 1 outing. The idea behind the game from Sega was to design it to be very different to the 16-bit version of Sonic 2, much like Sonic 1 and Castle Of Illusion they wanted the game to have it's own identity on the less poweful 8-bit Master System rather than copying the Mega Drive Sonic 2 version which would have looked like shit on the Master System and would have had alot of level cuts and other things missing to make it fit in a 512K rom. Infact the only thing the two versions have in common is Tails and Mecha Sonic, the inclusion of hang gliders, runaway railcarts, floating bubbles and mazes of twisting pipes I feel worked great for this port and helped it become it's own game.
One of the best games on the Master System for me, It's not that difficult (if you're not going for the emeralds) once you know the level design which some stages like Green Hills act 2 and Scramble Egg is very much trial and error. Saying that I have a lot of nostalgia for this as well first got this on the Game Gear in the mid 90s in it's screen crunch glory.
Yeah, the nostalgia cloud is powerful. I remember having good times with this game too. But now when I look at it properly, it's my least favourite 8-bit Sonic game. It's a shame really. Still definitely worth a play for any Sonic fan however :)
Green Hills Act 3 is trial and error ;)
@@redhotsonic you are so funny!!
@@redhotsonic Me: how can I get continues in sonic 2 master system version
RED HOT SONIC: you have to get exactly 77 rings, 77 rings?, WHAT FU##ING REQUIREMENT IS THAT!
Me: yes I agree, WHY DO WE NEED TO COLLET EXACTLY 77 RINGS THAT'S BULLCRAP!!!
@@redhotsonic You also have to have the same number of lives as the act number. I think Underground 2 is your only chance.
i love scrembled egg zone music
Back in the day I had this on Game Gear, and years later I obtained it on MS. It was interesting to see the subtle differences that had to be made for the GG version for it to fit the screen, but it really is a tough game like you say. Getting that emerald in Sky High Zone on the compact GG screen was a nightmare!
It’s a shame they made so few changes for the game gear version, with the first game they made a whole bunch of changes and the screen crunch is rarely a problem, but sonic 2 has serious issues with it.
Sky High Zone 2 is one of the fresh out of Hell levels. And it's early in the game, too!
The level order generally is mucked up, with the difficulty wildly swerving everywhere.
did you know that the checkpoint monitor from 8-bit sonic 1 was left unused in the data?
not only that, but green hills was originally intended to be the primary zone instead of underground
feel free to rage
Employee: Sonic 2 is ready for Master system what should we do for the game gear version?
Programmer : port the whole thing with one change.
Employee : Sir?
Programmer : Shrink the screen and change none of the level design.
Players : *Game gear Antlion boss flash backs*
When The Good Ending happens, Sonic and Tails stay alive, so when “The Bad Ending” happens, it actually means Tails wont be seen by Sonic and is lost, so hes not dead atleast :/!
I agree. This is the reason Sonic is alone in Sonic CD.
@@Sonictheoofhog4 Actually Sonic is alone in CD because he didn't meet Tails yet
Sonic CD canonically takes place before when Sonic and Tails met
@@dumblittleidiot1301 i like to think sonic cd took place after sonic 1. Heres my story
After the events of Sonic 1 Sonic wanted to take a vacation so he saw an article about little planet so he took his plane and went there as he did his plane got a bit Rusty so he just ran to see the planet in chains so he was having another adventure then. So when he did after Sonic CD he was going to go back to his home but his plane couldn't handle it so he landed on West island. Then when he ran around West Island for assistance for his plane. Tails fix the plane and sonic met him.
Thats my story.
Guys he's in Sonic 3 so the good ending the true ending
I´ve played this game since 1992 when I was 7 years old and I still think it is one of the best...a real classic. I don ´t understand why people say is too difficult. Actually, it has an average difficulty level and that's the good thing about this one. It is not as easy as the others .
I didn’t have popcorn so I just had cookies instead😅
Good enough 😉
I ate cereal since it was early in the morning lol.
I got chips.....close enough right
@@Black__Rose. yea pretty close i'd say.
About time, I love your lets reviews!
i enjoyed sonic 2 master system. it was fun, finding emeralds, spending hours hang gliding...haha. all the different levels where pretty exciting. even the music was catchy too, it was great
6:06 hey that's where sonic lives on earth in the sonic movie :D
Beautiful review, lots of love and effort went inside this. Thanks for creating some awareness for the Sonic games on the master system!
I played these Sonic games as a kid, and I always hoped that I could get to play as tails in Sonic 2 after seeing him on the game cover. And even though I could finally play as tails in Sonic chaos I have always preferred the game graphics of Sonic 1 and 2.
This game I have the best memories of out of the two games.
love your reviews man
If I'm being honest, the bad ending credits theme has to be one of my favorite pieces of music in retro games, it just has that really melancholic, weird vibe while at the same time it hypes you up thinking you actually beat the game, only to see that you forgot to save Tails and he dies
Great review!
Man your sense of humor is great :)
Subscribed to your channel not so long ago, cool reviews!
Greetings from Russia ;)
I think that the Classic Sonic timeline is: Segasonic the Hedgehog (Arcade), Sonic 1 (Genesis), Sonic 1 (Game Gear/Master System), Sonic CD (Sega CD/Mega CD), Sonic 2 (Game Gear/Master System), Sonic 2 (Genesis), Sonic Chaos (Game Gear/ Master System), Sonic 3 & Knuckles (Genesis), Sonic Triple Trouble (Game Gear), Sonic Mania (PS4, Xbox one, Nintendo Switch, PC)
The Game Gear version of this game was my first Sonic game. I was already a Sonic fan from the cartoon, and Tails was my favorite. I was so looking forward to playing as him, as he was featured on the box art and title screen. I was so disappointed that he wasn't playable, as I had seen another kid playing as Tails on his Game Gear at karate class (he was playing Sonic Chaos I later learned) which is what prompted me to ask my parents for a Game Gear in the first place. Having only watched the cartoons and being so young that I was just beginning to learn to read, I didn't know the significance of the Chaos Emeralds and how Robotnik was holding Tails hostage to get Sonic to collect them for him (which explains why he saves Sonic from a certain fiery death at the end of the first zone) and just thought that they were only for giving you continues. I didn't know about the final zone and the true ending. Instead, when I finally beat Scrambled Egg zone and got the bad ending where Tails dies I thought that was the only ending, and that was a terrible gut punch for a young Tails fan that had burned through loads of AA batteries before my mom got me an AC adapter and played these levels until I knew the earlier zones inside and out. All of that struggle and my favorite character, the one I would have rather been playing as, was strongly implied to have died.
I put it down and didn't pick it up again until I found my old Game Gear as a teenager and figured with my more mature brain, developed gaming skills, and knowledge from the internet that saving Tails was possible, I could finally beat it properly and save my fox friend. I even grinded up to 9 lives in the first zone by collecting rings and a hidden life monitor and intentionally dying to reset the level. Turns out I couldn't even get past the second boss, so no closure for me.
Going back to my younger years, I did eventually get Sonic Triple Trouble and you can bet that 9 times out of 10 I played as Tails. I beat that game more times than I care to count, although I still wasn't able to collect all of the emeralds. Those special stages could be tough. With the plane you basically had to memorize where the rings would be coming from to stand a chance, and the platforming ones with Fang at the end were built to troll with their time limits, confusing layouts, and springs galore. Still, at least the ending wasn't a downer, and the difficulty was more fair. I actually played Triple Trouble so much that the contacts on the cartridge became worn from how often I'd put it in my Game Gear.
Back to my teenage years, my mom had picked up a bunch of Game Gear games on clearance for next to nothing, so I finally got to play Sonic Chaos. Tails was playable in that game, but unlike in Triple Trouble he was the game's easy mode, as selecting him would give you tons of lives and continues. You also couldn't enter special stages and collect the emeralds as him, and were thus locked out of the true ending. They really wanted you to play as Sonic. I'm glad Triple Trouble allowed you to experience the full game as Tails.
Now if only younger me had known about Tails Adventure, I would have definitely asked Santa for that. At least they made it available on 3DS.
It was my first game, I've loved it since I was 5 years old. It can be difficult and trial-and-error at times, but it sure is a fun time.
This is the first game I remember ever playing, still play it through a few times a year for nostalgia. Absolutely love it to pieces despite its flaws.
Fun Fact: The prototype/PC track of IceCap from Sonic 3 is a remix of Crystal Egg zone music from this game.
You just need to speed up crystal egg music
*There are actually Flickies in this game. * If you jump over the life box on the far left in the first stage of the second zone without breaking it, Flickies appear on the screen and follow you around.
The Master System version was also released officially in Brazil where the Master System was (and to some extent still is) very popular.
At least Tectoy brought s2 sms to here
Just discovered your channel from this vid(and sonic 2). I enjoyed them and wonder if you are planning on doing sonic chaos?
This was my first Sonic game. The first Act's boss was soooo hard for child me.
I only vaguely remember the minecart level of this game. I would've been 8-10 years old at the time
Imagine the US release of the original Master System version used Sonic Boom as Green Hills' OST instead of Sonic - You Can Do Anything
The Master System actually didn't sell well at all here in North America, and while not directly caused by poor sales, that did lead to the Master System version of Sonic 2 not releasing outside of Europe, as the Master System was discontinued here in early 1992, shortly after Sonic 1 was released on the system.
what about the sega game gear
Sonic 2 on SMS/GG was a nightmare for me. I couldn’t even get all 6 of the emeralds without dying once.
Also this might be the best sonic 2 sms review i ever saw
At least you were able to beat the first zone :P
Wow, so this is a new game completely with a new plot. I would've missed it if not for this video. And here I thought I played all the old Sonic games.
imo the scrambled egg zone theme really slaps
The kicker about the lack of checkpoints is that, while I don't know if it would function if placed, the down-arrow monitor is at least graphically in the rom data.
In fairness to the music. It sound much better when you listen to it through a mono speaker on an old crt tv
His british accent just adds to the video, I don't know why... Assuming it is british and I am not an idiot (Edit: Nice to see a RUclipsr who views his comments, Thanks for the heart)
The hang glider was really frustrating, yes, but once I learned it, I immediately fell in love with it.
Just hold the UP button, and press the LEFT button to defy the air resistance,
2:16
It's left ambiguous what his fate was.
Me and my brother put some serious hours into this back in the day.
Imagine if in Sonic CD the reason Toot Toot Sonic Warrior is the same as Green Hills Zone is because Sonic was running around in Green Hills Zone, therefore playing the zone theme.
I played Sonic 1 and 2 on the Master System and only got a Genesis when I was in my teens so I played those Sonic games too. Sonic 2 on the MS is absolutely the most punishing, unfairly hard classic Sonic game.
I've always wondered why Robotnik rescued Sonic at the end of the first stage. His ego must have wanted Sonic to be defeated by his own hands.
The first sonic game we got back in the day in my home, the game gear version, i love this game, 8 bit main sonic games are just awesome and love em all (Sonic 1, 2, Chaos, Triple trouble and Blast).
The difficulty on 2 is a bit high yeah but thats good for me. When i was a kid i remember i couldnt ever find the emerald on Gimmick stage and every time i saw the bad ending.
You didn't mention the fact that the running shoes special box only appears once.
I wonder how a MS Sonic 3 would have looked like.
8:29 this sentence perfectly describes nintendo
Haven't seen your videos in a while.
Why... what. I don't know. (0:50)
Edit: 2:43 also fits that
I have a big ol' soft spot for most of the 8-bit Sonic titles... But not this one. I love a challenge, but this game is just mean to the point of being unfun, it's hard to explain, but I've always felt like this game had this oppressive, heavy atmosphere and I can't explain why
I had this back in the early '90s and actually completed it (not without throwing the gamepad across my bedroom multiple times). Nuts how times have changed, I would not have the patience to commit so much time to this now without NO continues or restore points. If they re-released this on PS STORE with those features included I would 100% buy it.
It was a great game at the time. Significantly tougher than the mega drive version and getting all the emeralds for the non-horrifying ending was a very decent challenge
12:22 I know this is years old, but on the beatboxing comment, that’s actually due to the limitations of the audio chip used in the Master System & Game Gear. The SN76489 supports up to 4 simultaneous voices: 3 square wave channel and 1 noise wave channel. However, with 3 square waves, the noise channel is limited to only 3 different white noise sounds (percussion) and 3 different periodic noise sounds (pulse wave typically 3 octaves of A). There is a way to get more different sounds out of the noise channel (whether white noise or periodic noise), but that would decrease the number of square wave channels to 2. This is different from that of the NES’ 2A03/7 CPU and audio chip where its noise channel support 16 different percussion sounds and 16 different metallic sounds.
I think Tails did indeed die in Sonic 2 SMS if you get the bad ending. I actually think it's a reference to Revenge of Shinobi's bad ending, since both have that illusions at the end if you fail to save your objective (only in Revenge of Shinobi..... she's CLEARLY dead).
But that means in the good ending, Sonic and Tails blow up off-screen or something!
crystal egg's music sounds like me messing around in a music program
13:05
Me: wats this? **gasps**
Sega: it sonec cE
Don't worry redhot, in my remake, I promise that the gimmicks will flow better with the gameplay!
Mate the soundtrack for this game is lit, I get your beat box complaint (personally I like it) but come on the tunes themselves are top notch.
Actually, there's a bit in my script where I say that if the "beat-boxing" effect were lowered in tone, I would enjoy the OST more. But due to trying to keep the video to a certain length, that, as well as other bits got cut. So I agree with you, but for me, that noise is too distracting. Personal tastes I suppose :)
I agree it's a little too loud, but it doesn't drown out the music either. I personally found the Sonic 2 soundtrack significantly better overall then Sonic 1.
1 year later finds new vid YOUR! NOT GONE :)
Just played through sonic 1 on the master system with all emeralds, now on Sonic 2 - straight away I can say it feels MUCH MUCH more smooth, less glitchy, higher jump and although you don't go out the screen (due to slow frame speed) this one is MUCH faster..has to be sonic 2 for me I am afraid!
I like thinking about the master system/ game gear versions of sonic 2 being a prequel of sonic 2
There was a bug in that second kite level where you would fly off the screen and have to wait for 10 minutes to die and reset you. From watching this video I have learned that you didn't have to get the Gem with the kite but could spring up it.
Actually, the manual states that Eggman's holding Tails for ransom. And what better ransom than the six Chaos Emeralds?
Eggman's trying to sell Tails to someone other than Sonic?! That's evil!
Which one? The American version or the Japanese one?
So yes, it's your duty to tackle the adventure alone;
Never had the Master System but it seems like it's all a game and Eggman and Sonic are playing with different rulebooks but the main thing that they both have in common is that when defeat it all hostages are set free
“WHAT KIND OF (BEEP) REQUIREMENT IS THAT”
Honestly, I think the best way to play the Master System version of Sonic 2 is with the Sweet Relief hack, which adds rings into the boss acts, as well as checkpoints (but not in acts 1 or 2, strangely), toning down the difficulty a bit.
The bubble started in Sonic 2 GG
it's important to note that sonic 1 was the only official sonic game on the master system/game gear developed by Ancient to my knowledge. sonic 2 and later were made by aspect. as well, sonic 2 is aspect's first sonic game.
When You Said Put Your Feet Up My Feet Were Already Up Lol!
Oof, I was going to make a video on this too but if I do it'll seem like I'm copying. Nice review though!
Dang I'm late again
But we all can agree that Green Hills sounds similar to the Sonic CD JP opening theme
Also Mecha Green Hill Zone.
THEY ARE BOTH THE SAME C**T OK ALSO THE SONIC 2 MS WAS FIRST
@@NicksRepository oh
I know a lot of people think the 3ds is dead but I’m gonna buy the 8-bit versions of sonic 1/2 for the 3ds
When I was little, I had no idea that you could re-collect your lost rings, due to how you can't pick them up while you're in your invincibility frames. It's a bit annoying, but I guess it's better than not being able to pick them up at all.
Controlling that hang glider though 😵😵😵😵
played this so much as a child and back then I knew it was badly designed. so many cheap deaths from spike pits that you couldn't avoid unless you knew they were there always found it interesting that sonic being able to move along the top of water when spinning fast enough was kind of brought to the 16 bit games in sonic 3.
I knew nothing about 2D level design for a long time until I found jupihornet’s channel
I have mastered the hangglider. Just press left to the tempo of the background music in Sky High Zone.
somebody said "hey do sonic chaos" in the chat replay, and look what happened.
Learn the levels, gather lives and master the gliders. I must be rare in rating this up with Castle of Illusion even with the flaws.
I've played this game to death and never ever got a tails signpost, also didn't knew continues were a thing
Definitely unforgiving but that just made the challenge more fun, you forgot to mention or maybe didn't notice the roll-jump that's exclusive to this game whereby Sonic can begin a roll and turn it into a jump of great momentum, it might just be faster than spin dashing if you time them well and definitely makes speed running more fun...even if like me you aren't breaking any records for the time being.
If your having troble with the hang gliders just hold left on the d-pad.
Do a Sonic & Tails Duology review it's also known Sonic Chaos and Sonic Triple Trouble.
The Worst Thing is that the checkpoints were planned for this game
Ancient were great with the first game, idk I still like this one a lot though. I had it on the game gear as a kid.
Someone could make an animation series with this games plot with some tweaks (being able to see what was happening with tails and robotnik, etc. etc.)
get review keep the works going 😀
One of the biggest quality drops between one game and its sequel. What a nightmare.
Sonic wanted to fly sky high. He failed. Now he won't go hang gliding together with Tails.
does somebody get the reference
Sky high zone dats da reference
@@_nayrb Late reply, but I'm afraid you're wrong.
For green hills I think sonic CD used it as a callback to give you nostalgia
Sonic 2 8bit is not for players with little patience, actually I got this first in the early days and teached me a lot, it can be a frustrating game but very rewarding, also I never got the change back in the day to experience the good ending as I cannot find Gimmick's Mountains emerald and resort to a cheat to get to the last zone, anyway I still love it and I would like to know more on the history of the development as it probably was a troubled one
9:52 once he finds out sheids no not exist he rages like hell
I know this is years old, but Sonic 2 8-bit released before Sonic CD (1 year, to be precise), and both game soundtracks were done by the same composer(s) (referring to JP Sonic CD), so Toot Toot Sonic Warrior came from this game first.
*WOAH MY HEAD'S SPINNING*
*SEEEEEEEEGGGGAAAAAAAAAAA*
