  • Taking the Explore Group ferry from CBD Auckland we spent the day tramping around Motutapu Islands. This magical island is only 30 minutes from Auckland central.
Motutapu Island is a 1,509 ha (3,730 acres) island in the Hauraki Gulf to the northeast of the city of Auckland, New Zealand. The island is part of the Hauraki Gulf Maritime Park.
We had a great time exploring the island. We got into Home Bay on the Explore morning service, then checked out the Reid Homestead. From there we walked the western Rotary Centennial Track (great views!) then at the Northern Junction took the track to the WWII Gun Emplacements, then on to Sandy Bay. Then walked back to northern junction and took the eastern Rotary Centennial Track back to Home Bay. Then took the afternoon Explore ferry back to Auckland. Was a awesome 5 hours on the island. You can also camp at Home Bay.
