Just finished re-reading Chamber of Secrets. Kenneth Branagh nailed not only this scene, but the whole Gilderoy character. Absolutely the best choice for the role.
He played the character well, but every illustration of Lockhart before the movie portrayed him with long, blonde lochs of hair. I strongly disagreed with the appearance in this movie. I was anticipating wizard Fabio.
Something that was excluded from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was the fact that in the book after Arthur Weasley was attacked by Nagini in the Department of Mysteries he was put in St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries. When Harry, Ron, and the others went to visit him they ran into Gilderoy Lockhart as well! He still hadn't a clue as to who he was or who they were because the memory charm he had really worked, guess he was too good for his own good.
@@julijacaksmurn6938 Its still the same. In the book Harry, Ron, and Hermoine go to the hospital to see Mr. Weasely but they run into Lockhart who is there because of the memory charm. Its just a scence they didn't include in the movies.
He was in love with fame and money. He was not enough dark to be a lord but enough, to steal peoples identities, their work. And he would let Ginny die, he would let Ron's sister die, he would destroy Harry and Ron's minds and make a gain out of it too. He talked about it so casually. Maybe he let people die before and wrote a book about it, smiled to the cameras, signed fan letters.. He was a talentless coward, but also a manipulator. Now I think of it, Gilderoy Lockhart was more dangerous than I had thought. He talks about the idea of a little girl's mangled body as a seller point, too. Or Harry and Ron going insane over it. Good riddance.
And people say Ron didn't do anything useful. Seriously though if it wasn't for his broken wand, he and Harry would have been screwed. So the next time someone says Ron isn't useful in the films, just look up this scene, the chess scene in Sorcerer's stone, and the destruction of the locket in Deathly Hallows part 1.
Lockhart was definitely evil. Not only was he willing to wipe the memories of a couple of 12 YEARS OLDS. But also remember that he had successfully performed that spell on many other witches and wizards to steal their accomplishments. Sure he isn't up there with Bellatrix, Voldemort and the Death Eaters, but he is most definitely evil
Ron's wand didn't backfire. Ron's wand was broken into two pieces. Taping the two pieces together was not only a very bad idea but pretty dangerous. The base piece was one wand of course, and the broken off end piece was another, now smaller wand, with a magical core intact. What Ron had unintentionally done was to aim two twin wands directly at each other! Later on in the story Valdie discovers how twin wands can rebound spells, and even wilder things.
@@hardcoreking52 He should have taken it to someone who could have refined the tattered end. He would have a shorter wand for a while. Then he should have destroyed the short broken piece because that piece could have been used against him.
@@cadenrolland5250 ah okay, cool. I never knew that was the reason why his wand backfired. I understood it was broken, but not because it was now considered two wands.
I think the spells backfire because when a spell is cast, it channels through the wand to the tip to shoot out. When there is tape or the wand’s broken, the spell hits a ‘wall’ and goes the other way, coming out the other side and hitting the caster.
I believe that it is like pressurized magic. When Ron taped his wand back, it left a crack in there for the magic to escape out of, since magic through a wand is just more focused, which probably means there is a tiny hole at the end of the wand for the core to be put in and would unintentionally be the part where magic would come out, much like a rubber wire with electricity flowing through it. What Ron essentially did was sloppily tape his wand back together, and that left a crack for magic to escape like pressurized air, and out backwards in between the cracks of the Spell O Tape. Ron essentially made a reverse blowback wand, and that magic has nowhere else to go but the castor. Its like if someone was holding onto an exposed wire, and the shocks have nowhere else to go but into someone’s hand.
One thing i find fascinating is how aggressively he uses Obliviate. I mean, its a Very precise and subtle charm, altering someone's memories afterall, and the way Hermione used it in the Deathly Hallows movie is a lot more appropriate, i'd say. But here, Lockhart uses it as if it were a Curse.
Ron: "My wand, look at my wand." 😰 Harry: "Be thankful it's not your neck." And be thankful Ron, your wand manage to finally gave Lockhart the karma he needed.
Commentators about Harry Potter leave out mentioning that Kenneth Branagh directed & starred in several of Shakespeare’s plays, including Hamlet. And he won two Oscars. First individual to be nominated in seven different categories. And two Emmys. And he was an Irishman from Belfast. I thought he was splendid as Gilderoy Lockhart! 👍🏿👍🏼👍🏾👍🏽👍🏻
Cuz there is hardly anything amusing about Umbridge. Lockhart may be a narcissistic individual, but his carelessness can sometimes get the best of him in humorous ways. Umbridge is a very shrewd, sadistic individual, who would gladly let others suffer to her own enjoyment.

In here "Obliviate" is cast with an explosion of green light, but in Deathly Hallows part 1 they didn't follow up that visual effect (which was better for the sad nature of the scene).
It's just because Hermione used a smaller less powerful memory charm on their parents. Here Gilderoy intended to erase all of their memories (pretty evil huh) so that's why he said it more agressively
Dumb question; but why don't the Ministry of Magic just do something like this against Death Eaters? Unless there is, like a protective charm against having ones memory erased, I don't understand why the Ministry just erases the minds of the many Death Eaters and/or Dark Wizards, instead of keeping them locked up in Azkaban.
