The potato is probably instant mashed potato:
"Instant mashed potatoes are potatoes that have been through an industrial process of cooking, mashing and dehydrating to yield a packaged convenience food that can be reconstituted by adding hot water or milk, producing an approximation of mashed potatoes."

There is a guideline for fast food places when it comes to the temperature of their products. In the past customers have had third degree burns because their meal was too hot, so the practise of "hot food" had to be dialed back to acceptable temps to avoid more injuries to patrones. That's why soggy & "warm" is the practise of the fast food industry here in NZ. Fish & Chip shops have to "hold" your order for a set time, so you don't burn your mouth when your order is ready.

NZ Maccas beef is 100 grass feed, and no growth hormones unlike the USA.
Or Australia. (It's complicated, growth hormone is legal in NZ is very restricted. NZ has not approved any use since 2015. Growth hormone beef can't be sold to Europe.

Tomato sauce and ketchup are not the same thing. Ketchup has vinegar in it, which gives it a characteristic tanginess that tomato sauce lacks. There's actually a lot of things like that in NZ. Cookies and biscuits are also not the same; cookies are crumblier and generally softer (typically producing many crumbs) whereas biscuits are drier and generally harder (producing more dust than crumbs), and often filled with creme or covered/dipped in chocolate.

I don't understand why you'd have a meal with P&G when you have chips (not French fries, chips).
My response - possibly many other Kiwi's - why the hell would you not!?
Dip those chips into the potato and gravy.
Simple. We rest our case, your honour.
Pasta sauce as a side, seperate from the pasta? Nope.
Meant to be together, from the outset. Sorry.
To finish, I've not been to McDonald's in close to six years, I think. KFC has been my monthly treat to myself / family for close to a decade.
Taco Bell - not my thing.

Had some KFC a couple of days ago That potato and gravy used to be amazing. Not sure what's happened to it these days. I'm pretty sure they've halved the amount of potato and watered down the gravy. 😢 I agree with you about preferring the pasta sauce on the side of the plate and not mixed in. Thought I was the only one😅 who preferred it that way.

They changed the recipe and cook it different. The chicken pieces are half the size too. preferred the chicken and chip places, the chicken pieces are bigger and chips hotter more crisp. KFC went from 10/10 to 5 or less. The burgers are okay cheaper at takeaways.

The meat (both beef & chicken) is better quality because farmers aren't allowed use as many drugs with the animals, so no steroids and lower levels of antibiotics. For the McDonalds fries - they don't use the McDonalds potato in New Zealand because that variety of potato is banned here. McDonalds applied to bring the variety into the country and after testing is was declared a noxious weed because of the way it grew. It's a GMO that is designed to grow very large *very* quickly and will crowd out other plant specieis. KFC chips in NZ use (a variation of) French Onion soup as the "salt", so they have a distinct taste. That's done in about half the countries that KFC operates in. The rest, including the US, just use salt. Taco Bell in NZ is just a fvcking travesty compared to the US.

  • @iallso1
    @iallso1 Год назад

I always swap out the mash and gravy for chips at KFC even though the chips are always over salted.
Never an issue having a burger from a drive thru as the food is cold by the time it reaches the counter and can't get any colder while you drive somewhere to eat it. Because Burger King and MacDonald are so poor quality I don't recall when I last used either, there are other Burger joints in NZ that are so much better.

If you want crispier chicken its the ones that have been sitting under the griller for over half an hour or longer. so in
other words it hasn't just been cooked its been there a while.
Its freshly cooked if its a little softer. Its the same with the fries.
A lot of it depends on what type of cooking oil its cooked in also.
Tacos ain't a big fast-food thing here because most people here .would rather go home and
    make their own .

Most people swap the p&G for just gravy and dip the chips in it when eating.
Tomato sauce and ketchup are two different things ketchup is chunkier and the taste is different from tomato sauce.

Taco Bell is ok, but not as awesome as I was expecting. I don't mind it so much but I did expect more.

I seemed to recall that McDonald's require their core burgers (hamburger 🍔, cheeseburger 🍔, Fillet o fish, Quarter Pounder, Big Mac) to taste the same at all of their restaurants worldwide. So if you bought a Cheeseburger 🍔 at a McDonald's in New York. It would taste the same as one bought in York UK or Hamburg Germany or in Seoul Korea or Whakatane NZ.
I am not a fan of KFC, although I went to one today in Whanganui. It wasn't very good. Not crispy and the fries were soggy. I didn't get a potato and gravy, but wish I did, so I could've dipped my fries into. It probably would've made it better.

I have friends in Kentucky, and I was chatting about this with a few girls in video chat today and I pointed out our KFC has lots of burghers and they said not there, which surprised me, the KFC burghers here are really good. Is Indian take out count as Fast Food? The Indian take out here is so good usually, when I have it in America I was so disappointed.
When it came to my Taco Bell order in America about 20 years ago - Missouri - I was quite frankly a little worried about what I was about to consume.
The McDonalds Kiwiburgher here is so good. But any burgher with fried egg and beetroot on is going to be awesome!
Side note: My now ex wife from San Diego and I went through a Jack n the Box drive through and I ordered an Ice Tea for her... the lady on the other side of the speaker said in reply:

Ain't potato, it's like mock cream, most ingredients are bulked fried/cooked, placed in warmer and scooped into approp containers. Afraid I'm not into either Macs or KFC, would much prefer the tradition burger and chips from either fish &chip shop or dedicated burger bar - all made on the spot while you wait and they taste far better plus chips are crispy. England/Clapham, Macs is absolute pooh and as cold as their winter, chips are stodgy and literally fold themselves in half if you hold one end. Yes paper straws - thankfully some of the fast food outlets appreciate the environment, sadly many people still don't and throw their bloody rubbish anywhere. Nice to see you happy face again.

Hey there, Morgan… you realise that what you’re experiencing is a NZ take on, what is to me, anyway, a bloody awful facsimile of someone else’s idea of fast food, yes?
We’ve lived in NZ, Europe and now in Australia and can honestly say that McDonalds is crap wherever in the world you are; won’t touch it!… KFC quality varies hugely from store to store and I can’t comment on Taco Bell as I’ve never had it!
NZ fast food, when I was growing up, was fish’n’chips, and a bit later on, burgers, but burgers quite unlike the appalling McDonalds product; proper patties, lettuce, tomato and beetroot with a smear of tomato sauce was the basic item, with cheese, egg, bacon, pineapple et al. being added extras.
Thankfully, here in Sydney, there are a plethora of absolutely stonking fast food places with products ranging from fabulous hamburgers, through the gamut to Asian fusion fast food, all being very quickly presented and piping hot.
NZ fish’n’chips are about the best in the world, especially in the south of the South where blue cod and oysters are at the very top of my particular fast food triangle!!
Fast food in The UK was immensely variable in quality and quantity, in France, street food was just exquisite; best kebab in the world was bought in the walled city in St Malo, from an old fashioned Turkish vendor…

Personal opinion, but I wouldn’t rate hangi food, frankly it’s poor cuisine choice, cooked in a hole in the ground, I have had things undercooked and other times burnt. Random quality. Not particularly tasty or spicy but rather bland fatty and starchy food. But I guess if you haven’t tried it there are food vans around with plenty of customers trying it, so others seem to like it.

Sadly, this isn't true anymore especially for export beef. The largest operation, 5 Star in Canterbury, opened in 1989 and can handle up to 20 000 cattle beasts at a time.
