I thought you were going to compare Mike's voice to Ben Burnley from Breaking Benjamin cuz there's times where they sound very similar, especially on the Red song that Ben co-wrote called Shadows, but I definitely understand the Chester comparison too. Speaking of hitting your head with a guitar, Dany from The Warning accidentally hit her forehead with her guitar when she was taking it off at the end of their last show in Torreon, Mexico. She was holding her head the whole time going off stage but said the next day that she was okay, so that was great to hear.

You did one other Red song...Breathe into me. I would love to hear you do "Sever" "Feed the Machine" or "Darkest Part"

Death of Me is currently in the works and iirc should be released sometime in April according to the list he put out on the Community tab.

Glad you liked the song! I played the heck out of this song when it first came out. I love his voice and though I've never made the connection to Chester, I can hear what your saying. Thanks for the great score. My last name OMeara is pronounced OM-ear-a lol. Funny thing is you pronounced it right on my very first request, but have changed it on all subsequent ones! No biggie. Just glad you did my request! Keep up the good work.

I always thought he sounded almost like Chester…. One of the best shows I saw was Red and Skillet on the same stage, and John invited the lead vocalist from Red out and they did an Enter Sandman quick cover…
This is my fav Red song by far.. they put on a great live show..

Fight Inside by them. On the heavier side while still being melodic.

I'm glad you made that connection with Chester. I thought the same thing. Not necessarily a carbon copy, but certainly similar.

I won't disagree with you, but I didn't think of Chester.
First time hearing this band, and my non-musician ears thought he sounded similar to Adam Gontier (3 Days Grace/St. Asonia) and/or Tyler Connolly (Theory of a Deadman)

I think the same! Im dressing a Linkin Park shirt and agree with you, something in his voice sounds like Chester

I swear nobody went this fucking nuts over Chester Bennington’s vocals in Linkin Park since the dude died. Like damn his shit is not that hard to replicate, respect all around to him for sure, but not uncommon for anyone to replicate, at ALL. Simple fry scream, that’s literally all he did. Not that crazy. This band has been at it (at this point now) longer than Linkin Park did. Chester doesn’t have a distinct scream, because he didn’t scream that often, it’s an occasional fry vocal that literally anyone could do if you try it. So tired of everybody losing their shit over Chester, like damn I get it, but he didn’t really do anything but have a good voice and throw a scream or 2 out there for a band that made catchy enough songs to make it mainstream. Anybody remember the sick ass guitarist or drummer from Linkin Park? No, because the shit they made was the same shit every damn song that any practiced drummer or guitarist could do. It wasn’t that impressive, it was catchy, and lucky good timing for them, hot take.

They put on a fantastic live show

  • @Flash33c

Really? Maybe a little but to be honest I don't see it as both singers (Michael Barnes & Chester Bennington) are pretty distinct from one another (honestly I never even thought about it until you brought it up). As for the song itself I think it's a solid song by them, and I think the strings outro fits the song so well that it's hard for me to imagine it without them. Obviously it's live footage mixed in with parts from various live performances with the album audio over it but everyone can see that and they don't try to hide it and pretend it's something it's not like other bands and artists do. An 8 is a higher score than I expected (I expected a 7), but still a good and fair one.

There's something very satisfying about seeing the twins do guitar tricks at the same time.

Firstly, this is a great live tune (was at one of the shows subsequent to this shoot-- its pretty much exactly this). But as far as the album _Declaration_ goes? "Sever", "Float" and "Cauterize" are the standout tracks.
One of the things that defines Red (from _Until We Have Faces_ onward), is they've become sort of master purveyors of "dramatic tension" in their songs. Not every song, but when they hit it, there's not one band that's better.
Last time Red tried to subdue the strings there was a fan revolt.
@David Heretic About the dual guitar sling around thing, Michael Barnes (singer) did get whacked in the head during one of those guitar sling around things. If memory served.

I think I agree with you on the guitars, but my thought was that they were a bit low in the mix with the strings a bit hot. Something else I think could have improved it would be to add a fuller orchestration (i.e. low brass etc) to the strings, and that might help support the guitars a bit. I don't actually know anything about arrangements, though!

Hmm...I'm sensing the emergence of "Producer Dave"! hehehe...tough life, though: the producer is the guy everybody gets to blame! hahaha...but some of us are used to being responsible for absolutely everything that happens, especially if it's bad...

Well when you started to say he sounded like someone, my first thought was Chester, so must be something in it - only on the higher parts though.

  • @StoneShards

Yeah, but Chester had a finer rasp that he could sing thru; this guy tends to lose control of the rasp. That's not a rap against him--Chester's skill was extraordinary, it's certainly no shame to not match him! Personally, I appreciate the more rare use of rasp that's organically unpredictable. Nice review, Dave! Can't argue with the score!

With Tatiana now a refugee in the US and the rest of the band organizing aid and fighting in Kyiv, please react to "Home Back" (OMV). It shows what the band and their families are struggling through at this moment. 💙💛🌻
