- The golden years of the Ottoman Empire come to life in a television series. The life of Suleiman the Magnificent is preparing to be a guest in your homes in all its glory. Get ready to experience the era with ambition, loves, wars and all the struggle.
Prince Solomon, with his closest man, Ibrahim Pargam Ibrahim receives the bad news in a hunt. His father Yavuz Sultan Selim Khan passed away. Prince Suleyman sets out for Istanbul without waiting. Meanwhile, a galley loaded with slaves coming over the Black Sea is heading towards Istanbul. The hottest of the slaves is not yet aware that he is on a journey that will change his destiny. He is rebelling helplessly to return.
Sultan Süleyman wants to show what kind of sultan he is by the commands he gave on the first day of his sultanate. But not everyone will like these decisions. Sultan Süleyman does not hesitate to challenge all of Europe with the messages he sends.
Alex, despite all his rebellion, is brought to the Topkapi palace. His attitude attracted the attention of Valide Sultan from the first moment. But it won't be long before Alex learns the rules of the palace. He chooses a great target. Alex, Sultan Suleyman's first night on the way to attract his attention. Sultan Suleiman's wife Mahidevran just arrived from the palace of Manisa. He is looking forward to seeing his wife.

honestly with how she is portrayed...if gulfam hatun was my wife, i would have not let go of her. she's like the moon, calm, gentle, serene, seeing all but providing comfort to everyone. both friend and enemy.

Gulfem was the only one in that palace with any sense. She lost suleyman to mahidevran but didn’t start any fight, she accepted her life and was loyal to the royal family til the end.
Well not everyone is as mature as her, it’s like having everything to you and then it gets taken away by the very person you devoted yourself to.
Of course Mahi felt betrayed but she eventually gave up her desires, even if it took a while, Hurrem and Mahi both lose it when Suley dismisses them.
No she wasn’t the only one concubine in the palace, There’s other concubine called Sultana Fulana, Sultan’s first concubine

Suleyman needed a woman to make him feel peaceful and calm. And I think Gülfem could make him feel like this. She looked from her, how peaceful and calm she was. She was more loyal than Hürrem and Mahidevran to Suleyman's family and never betrayed anyone.

Unfortunately she lacked one very important thing that was absulutely necessary for women back then... she didn't have any living children. A woman, a concubine especially, without a child was menaingless.

I haven't watched all the episodes, but I always wondered what Gulfem's role in the harem was. I searched online and came up with varying answers, and given that the series does not adapt history fully (i.e. artistic license), I never could grasp who and what she was among the women. I'm glad I got to see this because I now understand that she did have a relationship with Suleiman at one point, and they had children (who sadly passed away). I have so much respect for Gulfem as a woman who has gone through the loss of her offspring, and is no longer among the main women who Suleiman pursues an active relationship with, but deals with her own bitterness and grief with a sense of dignified grace. Had Suleiman not have gotten caught in between Mahidevran and Hurrem, Gulfem would have made a perfectly amazing partner for him: calm, collected, sensitive, she treads softly and comforts Suleiman with her wisdom, her character, and her acceptance of how life has been a series of ups and downs for her.

The show portrayed her terribly if you ask me,they should have stuck to history at least when it came to Gulfem.
She was loyal,wise and important person in the harem who had so close relationship with the imperial family that she wrote private letters to Suleiman were she talks to him like close friend and equal, she even mentioned how she mistook Suleiman's Cologne as bevarage and got drunk, she blamed him for this and said " god willing, I will talk to you about this when you return"
They should not have made her a purposeless woman who used to be concubine

In the real history, Gulfem is of the royal consort(Kadín) and birth one son as a name Sehzade Murad. Unfortunately, her son died after next year.
Actually, her status in real history was debatable. Some said she was one of the Süleyman's consort, some said she was just harem servant, but like higher rank one. But clearly she had special position in the harem.

Sometimes I wonder, why Suleiman ever moved on from her to mahidevran? It's mentioned that gulfem was his first concubine and that she and Suleiman had a child. But it's seems like, at least, according to mahidevran's account, that she was discarded after the child died and he moved on with mahi. Which is kind of sad. Especially when you see the hurt and longing in her eyes when Suleiman asks her if he's upset her and she says that she only wishes for him to be happy.
Maybe back then, Gülfem was so desperate after her son died, so Süleyman send her to another place to maintain her health. Or maybe Gülfem was so sick at some point, so she can't have another child. But of course dynasty need heir, so Valide send another women, later known as Mahidevran.
But that's my theory. From i know, this series never explained reason Süleyman never called Gülfem to his bed again, although he clearly still respected her.

I feel so bad for character's like Nigar Kalfa & Gülfem Hatun (I take it that 'Hatun' is basically the title equivalent of 'Lady'). They really do get a bad deal in this series. Nigar, a fictional character in this show, gets used/abused by the people she's most loyal to & by those she thinks actually care about her (no TRUE spoilers, but it doesn't end well for her😭). All the while Lady Gülfem, an actual historical figure from Suleiman's harem, spends the majority of the series being ignored by the sultan & his family. They may ask her how she's doing from time to time, but not how she's feeling.....on the inside. It's sad to see Gülfem get treated like this, but for her character arch it makes sense because very little is know about her from real history, other then an anecdote about her death which most scholars agree is just that, a story.

I'll never understand why Suleyman didn't just marry off Gulfem to one of his pashas. He lets her rot in his harem instead and never summons her again. She could have a happy life as a respectable woman with a husband and kids - so sad!

This is actually one of many proofs that real Gülfem was not Süleyman's concubines but Kalfa in the Harem. Why would she still stay in the Harem, especially in Topkapi? All his concubines eventually stayed in old Palace, they never came to Topkapi with him.

Suleiman had 4 women they were Fuleriya hatun, Gulfem hatun, Mahidevran Sultan and Hurrem Sultan. Today I will talk about the first two.
Fuleriya hatun became a concubine of Suleiman in 1510-1511. She gave birth to sehzade Mahmud in 1512. She was the darling of Suleiman in his early years. When Suleiman took Gulfem she was tolerant and quiet. When sehzade Mahmud died in the plague of 1521 she was devastated and retired to old palace. She soon died after the sad event.
Gulfem hatun became a concubine of Suleiman in 1512. She was very beautiful and became the favourite of Suleiman. She probably gave birth to sehzadi Razia in 1514. But she soon was fallen out of favour when Mahidevran gave birth to Mustafa in 1515. She hated Mahidevran and supported Hurrem. Although Mahidevran became favourite, she was still liked by the Sultan. She gave birth to sehzade Murad in 1519. She was trusted companion of Hatice Sultan throughout hatice's life. But unfortunately both Razia and Murad died in the plague of 1521. She retired to old palace. When Hurrem gave birth to sehzade Mehmed she was completely outfavoured although she kept good contacts with Hurrem. She became a darling companion of Suleiman after the death of Hurrem. She was assassinated in 1564.

I wish in the show they could have shown that Gulden was highly respected and given more priority than mahidevran and hurrem. Mahidevran killed Suleiman's and Gulfem's relationship.
Mahi didnt kill any relationship..when a child of a concubine dies..she automatically disconnects a relationship from d sultan....thats why mahi abd gulfen are friends...

A king needs a matured woman who can bring in peace, love, care and right advice to him. Gulfem had all of that but unfortunately not mean and manipulative mind. That's the reason she lost out to selfish people like Mahi and Hurrem.

Poor Gulfem! Whatever Mahidevran did to Gulfem when she was with the Sultan, which she hinted to Hurrem when Mahidevran was the temporary Valide; I think it had to do with her children.
If it did, Gülfem wouldn't just forgive her out of the blue and wouldn't support her and be friends with her in S03-4, the rest of S01-2 that wasn't the three scenes in 1,8 and 42, and 59-62, no matter how forgiving she was.
Besides, Mahidevran could mean a lot by suffering in the scene you're referring to. Taking her love away from her alone means suffering. It definetly did for Mhidevran.

Sorry guys if i spoilt your mood, but no, Gulfem isn't really that "innocent" angel you're trying to paint a picture of. As a participant in many of Valide Hafsa's schemes against Hurrem (and later Hatice and co;), she takes up the portion of a person guilty of conspiracy. Of course, she might not have plotted all those games herself but one who supports them is as guilty as the other who organizes it. The presence of Hurrem made no difference in her life as her position was already taken over by Mahidevran, and Suleiman had no intention of ever taking her (Gul) back to their past physical intimacy. If Suleiman was still inviting her to his chamber for a "halvet" night, perhaps there would be some dim hope of rising. But she herself knew there was none. And therefore, she had no cause to rival against Hurrem. But out of loyalty to the dynasty, she became a scheming member. Innocence is only when you aren't aware that you're taking part in a plot against someone. And Gulfem was completely aware. lol.

so, the Harrem structure is basically a form of a communal living, like nuns or monks, with a head of the commune (harem) being sultan and his mother, and so some are celibate, some are not, where sultan is the most promiscuous.

This particular scene hits so much more differently and painfully after seeing THAT scene... If you know, you know but the way i instantly teared up at their frank conversation 😭
No matter what gulfem had to always stand aside and watch from afar she watched mahi give birth and fall pregnant with 2 children and hurrem fall pregnant with 5 children and give birth she was there when their children were born when they first entered the Topkapi palace and stayed there even after she had lost suleiman and her child she had to wipe her tears while everyone else got their happy ending with their children and she didn’t complain until later in the series and that was only once out of the many years she was there I applaud her for being that patient and welcoming to mahi and hurrem and not blaming them and instead blaming suleiman and trying to hold him accountable she supported both those women.

I always had the feeling that Gulfem and Suleyman kind of mutually drifted apart after the death of their children. I always got the sense that Gulfem was never able to reconcile with the grief and being with Suleyman felt to painful. She couldn’t stand the idea of having another child and losing it again. So that’s why she was never really competitive with Mahidevran.
Mahidevran is not a good woman, even with Gulfem, she is jealous.

@@nafsikakarkala9183 Not. Gulfrem was only a concubine who had also been a Haseki Sultan. However, all of his Sehzade died. Because Gulfrem had good character and attitude, he was appointed as a family of the Ottoman dynasty. The only legal wife is Hurrem Sultan. And Hurrem became Haseki Sultan
