The PS1 games were multiple discs because of how much disc space was used by pre-rendered CGI cutscenes; that’s the only reason. XIII used so much space because 90% of its cutscenes were pre-rendered, even when in-engine.

Pretty much! But the current FF7 Remakes are multiple disks for different reasons

You can test this out on a PS1. In FF7 if you switch discs in the middle of playing, it will continue to work just fine until you hit an FMV sequence. All the other data is on every disc.
I'm not sure if that's true for 8 and 9 though. Some locations are inaccessible on disc 4, and I suspect that might be because they had to strip out a few of the backgrounds to make room for more FMV.

Because of ore rendered cut scenes. FF7-9 had the whole games on each disc but the size of the pre rendered cut scenes took up so much space on the 750 mb disc they had to be split up.
There saved you an 8 min video.
Also FF13 was only 3 disc's on Xbox, it was 1 disc on ps3 for the same reasons.

Being able to work while offline if desired is a huge plus for any game and for software in general.
I imagine 24 N64 cartridges would be akin to a looping version of the old MS Office installs featuring an armload of 3.5" disks, but with no install and a constant rotation of cartridges. Would be a game in itself, similar to playing 52 pickup when teaching your children to play card games.....😉

My theory is: remake's issue was that some far backgrounds were on low res. Rebirth probably had everything highres now and will install those on the harddisk so that it's always available wherever the party is. Also there might be more fmv cutscenes in rebirth. There might also be more costume changes (maybe due to dating mechanics) and overall higher fidelity for character textures and hair. Lastly i think nomura doesnt want to disappoint us with loading times, esp when ff16 had very fast loading.

In PS6 or PS7 they definitely gonna remaster FF7 remake trilogy and they put on 3 disc on case and that be like revisiting 1997 ff7 once again :)

That is if game discs will still be used by that generation of consoles

Equating FF7 to a number of N64 cartridges wouldn't be a straight forward storage divided by capacity. Each of the discs in the final fantasy series will have to have a lot of duplicate information. For example, FF7, Cosmo Canyon, Kalm, and many other areas will have to be copied onto multiple discs. Having a game on a single storage device will cut down on that duplicate storage.
As for FF7 Rebirth/Remake needing multiple discs, I think your point was spot on, the obvious internet access. CoD being an online game, if you don't have good internet, you're not playing anyway.

04:50 there is a lot more than that happening compression can only do so much, and when you are playing the game the "game disc" is also installing new stuff on the console.

I always thought about how square and nintendo had their big break up over the n64 still using cartridges that were too small but they were totally fine with separating games between disks

Yeah even with 3 cartridges there's no way FF7 would have fit on the N64. Too many pre-rendered cutscenes

Yep, I already know multiple disc since early 90s. No need to explain from us. There's a lot games have multiple disc not just psone or ps2, PC games as well. Such as Neverwinter, battlefield 2, etc.

Yeah.. I don't buy this whole "marketing" angle. More than 60% of game sales are now digital and there is a literal version of the console that doesn't even have a disc drive. If they are spending money to include a second disc due to "marketing" than they would have a better time burning that cash to stay warm. The reason why games like call of duty doesn't have multiple discs is simply because the majority of the players play it for the online multiplayer. There's no reason to have multiple discs or install discs for online multiplayer because all players is going to need to download digitally all the patches to get everyone on the same version anyway.

A clarification on how the install/play discs work on PS4/5, technically both discs are "install" discs. All PS4/5 games are played from internal storage, not from the disc. However for many games you don't need the entire game installed to start playing, the rest will install in the background.
Once it's fully installed, the disc is just a license check. The reason only one of the discs is the "play" disc is just so you don't effectively get two copies of the game.
