BACKYARD BUNKER PART 5 - WATERPROOFING THE TUBE!

- Today we waterproof my underground backyard culvert bunker. Visit www.kiwico.com/jerryrig for 50% off your first month of KiwiCo with code JERRYRIG. And huge thanks to KiwiCo for sponsoring this video. Before we can bury my backyard bunker and put the dirt back on top, we have to make sure that the bunker tube itself is water tight. If water gets inside the bunker when it rains.... well... that would not be a good thing.

This is one of those series you wish you found a month after it was finished, so you can just binge watch the whole thing.
Watch the Colin Furze bunker. Its more entertaining than this one imo, feels a bit more "real"
@Festivejelly actually not true ive watched it , this one is much better
@@Festivejelly Yes Colin Furze has on heck of a underground bunker system will last for ever.
@@TzvhonI would like to disagree
Props to the internet for five minutes for not having a 90 page debate on why Jerry sucks or not
Consider renting/ buying a gas meter which analyses the air (oxygen %) in the bunker while construction is going on. There's plenty of fresh air now, but once you start closing it up more, you risk suffocation due to lack of oxygen that's used in rusting (oxidisation of metal) or a leaking inert gas bottle used in welding. Could become a problem overnight without warning.
Stay safe and good luck. Looking forward to the rest of this series.
- Safety Sally
I’m about 3 seconds in but what your saying tells me he didn’t backfil with concrete witch has a interesting reaction with metal oxidation keeping metal that’s touching concrete from rusting with just neutral ph moisture
Edit never mind I’m farther into the video that’s a dumb building order
You know that you have ventilation put in generally powered by battery banks and a generator so it won't be an issue
They will definitely add some ventilation at some point.
Why is he putting a bunker in his backyard in the first place
@@jwalster9412"At some point" that should be initially started before fully burying the thing.
Just wanted to say that i massively appreciate the fact that you've edited in the conversions like pounds to kg. Makes it way more fun and interesting to watch this series.
Can’t wait to see the series of Zach’s great grandkids restoring the old bunker
Zack* why do you people spell names how you think they should be spelled
are you from the future?
It might also be smart to add a sacrificial anode afterwards, just in case you missed any small amount of bare metal. This might be able to take the lifetime of the bunker to a couple hundred years if managed properly.
This. Sacrificial anodes are common with buried propane tanks.
Yes! considering there is still mill scale on the steel under the coating you applied any damage or inconsistency’s to the coating and milscale will cause accelerated corrosion to the steel (mill scale is electrochemicaly catholic to the steel) highly suggest a scraraficial anode. (Probably should have abrasive blasted mill scale off before applying coating)😅
What's a sacrificial anode?
@@hamza-chaudhrybasically what it sounds like, you place a metal that corrodes easier than the one of the bunker. In that way when corrosion occurs it will happen at the sacrificial metal. For more details check how corrosion, anodes and kathodes work 😊
@@hamza-chaudhry When you have different metals inside something wet, atoms move between them. This is how batteries work. Some metals are more willing to let go of ions than other metals. Zinc is a common sacrificial anode. So you put some Zinc under the bunker and connect it, and the zinc will corrode before the steel does.
There are also "active" solutions which add electricity to the steel to reduce the chance of corrosion. These work as long as you have electricity to run them.
Either way, these systems can add decades or centuries onto the life of buried metal.
I am curious how you were able to coat and water tight seal the bottom areas that make contact with the ground.
I have been wondering the thing my self if water goes below the tube and that not sealed then that would be an issue
Same here. Was just searching if anyone already mentioned it 😂
That’s what i was thinking

They must have seen a few of Furze's videos cause what started out as gentle asmr bunker vibes has now gotten a punk rock soundtrack!
For real though, i'd love to see you two chatting about your bunker projects over a cup of tea (and presumably zoom), you're both brilliantly entertaining and educational channels!
Well, Furze didn't bother to waterproof the steel he used to build it and just covered it with concrete. People have been saying he did a mistake but he re gently did a small test cut and there were basically no rust.
@@Dragonitedbasically no rust is bad. That means that it rusted pretty quickly for something that is supposed to last a significant length of time.
one test spot, with protection covering, had a tiny amount of surface rust the unprotected test piece had zero rust!
@@ashtonhoward5582
@@ashtonhoward5582 No rust means all rust? What?
@@scikick "basically no rust" means there was rust. And I'm assuming he didn't put it up multiple decades ago. Ergo, not good.

The construction of the bunker is so fascinating to watch

This construction project is going better to spec than 90% of homes being built today. Looks beautiful!
*in the us
my house is made of concrete, not paper.
Hey Zack! Nice job! The paint you are using is very good and probably it is already good enough. In the oil and gas industry normally passive protection (paint or resin) is not good enough. The next step is cathodic protection, in your case you could use some magnesium.
It is very commonly used in gas station tanks and it is relatively cheap.
Yep, it's used on underground propane tanks all over. Does need to be replaced every couple decades though.
When talking about re-coating the Trenchcoat, you mentioned not having to do anything to the galvanized metal. It's too late now, but you should use spray galvanizer over any areas that have been welded.
I thought they applied waterproof construction adhesive to those joints. Or I could have misunderstood.
@@NoNonsense316that and rubber, but he might have been referring to the rubber gasket and not any additional rubber (when he was applying the adhesive he mentioned it being applied to either side of the rubber). He then applied a long sheet of rubber that was then clamped down with a collar, on top of the tar stuff.
Great to watch! Really enjoying the progress. I couldn't help but notice the OH&S issues. .I.e. no rails when walking across planks or even standing on top of the bunker. You wouldn't want to slip and fall. Here, in Australia, you need safety rails even for roof tile works.
DIY and OH&S are two things not seen together
Just a thought but like a boat/ship in the ocean, have you thought about connecting a sacrificial metal like zinc to your bunker that can easily be inspected and replaced? I think it would help increase the life time of your bunker for those areas that eventually have direct exposure of steel to moisture that you can't easily inspect or replace.
Wow I got here soon, opened yt and perfect timing love the series, keep it up.
Thanks for all this POV shots, feels like we are there building with you.

12:30. That's why they call it a hammer drill. ;). Great work Zack!
Just out of curiosity, how do you deal with the exposed metal of the seams at the underside of the tube?
I was wondering this
I suspect they dug a small trench by hand, painted it, installed the ring and rubber gasket, and filled it back in off camera.
@@warrensteel9954 I'm not sure they did it, it would have been pretty good video material and they would have shown it 🤔

Watching people do all the work for me for the apocalypse
The smoke ring was a cool bonus love the project will do one my self later in life
10:28 man why did you eat that
I hope your engineers have accounted for the uplift pressure (aka buoyant force) that will act as a upwards force on the bunker. Last thing you need is for your bunker to float upwards when the soil gets saturated.

I hope you are also treating the welds on the galvanised metal, for corrosion!
Exactly
Man this is a learning expirience. At first i was like, thus weirdo is worried about rust on galvanized but you meant just the welds
@@TheAnnoyingBoss actually in my experience galvanized steel that's exposed to constant moisture and encased in dirt isn't all that rust resistant

Bunker video is getting more interesting day by day.
One note on the galvanized metal. Any small scratch can and will remove the coating, leading to rust. Consider spraying a final coat of waterproofing on the entire outer area once all work is complete and before backfill. Water is your enemy, it can and will find its way in.

As people have previously said, you need to have concreted the foundation before you laid the bunker on it, as its going to sink
Should have just made the bunker out of concrete.
LOL, No.
@@dubious6718 It depends, the concrete can crack and let moisture in too. Most bunkers made to last an explosion have both steel core and concrete reinforcement. or layers of both.
@@tacticooldennisthis thing has no purpose, it can't handle a blast, will never be equipped to handle fallout (it's not big enough) and is a easy way to get cornered since the secondary exit is just next to the main one. What did you expect from a guy that is relying on solar panels to power his "doomsday plan"
@@tacticooldennis Just because you call something a "bunker" doesn't make it one lol. This thing is more of an overpriced quick storm shelter than anything and based on the current design that's a slippery slop to call it.

Hey Jerry, great video! I couldn't help myself as an audio engineer to listen to that cool reverberation of the bunker. It would be super cool if you could do an Impulse response of it just by popping a balloon and record it a few meters from it, then you can load that file into a convolution plugin and use it in an audio application, hahaha!
6:06 your brain is exposed bro
Some sell bathwater, other sell their backyard dirt...times are wild man!
I have to admit, that sound when the coating burns off is really cool. Definitely one of the great things about working with metal is that if you screw up you can just weld more, and with a bucket of that epoxy you can recoat whatever welds you make.
I am surprised you didn't go for nylon insert lock nuts, each time a power tool is activated the vibrations cause the normal nuts to unthread. I would add Loctite or change to lock nuts, or just before burring it I would torque them but I have no idea to what spec since this is a custom job.
Im surprised you are not concreting it in, that would help protect the metal and strengthen it a lot, is this to do with cost or just a personal choice? and I have to say how amazed I am at the progress considering how many videos you are getting out a week.
Would add a huge amount of cost and work for little benefit. It will already outlive him and his children.
