I remember being able to do this since I was a kid and I've simply never lost the ability to do it. It seems that this is a move that most healthy children should be able to do by default before years of bad posture and inactivity errode your ability to do it.

The shoulder has 360 degrees of movement so for people who have adequate mobility this exercise is fine. However if you are concerned or not confident we suggest you do it with the guidance of an appropriately certified trainer to who has assessed your range of movement and can support you with the right progressions. Hey, thanks for taking the time to comment.
It might look a little different but it can work as a great shoulder mobility exercise as you are taking the shoulder through its full range of motion (full shoulder flexion and extension) and you have to be able to control and have strength through the entire range which is important for the health of the shoulder. It's also good for body awareness and kinaesthetic awareness of where is my body in space when moving upside down... when learning a handstand people get disorientated. If you are not interested in learn any calisthenics and your training is more traditional with weights etc and then you might not use this exercise... it is however harder than it looks and also great fun.
What is your training like? Do you do ant calisthenics?
