Cold, rational Simon is such a turn. The way he talks to Jayne, especially the totally flat, "Okay, let's talk crazy," makes him more than a little terrifying. It then makes his "I will not hurt you," and the "We could circle each other... but the idea of that tires me." have that extra little chill to it. It's a wonderful bit of acting.
River knew what Jayne was up to when they were in the imaging bay at the hospital back on Ariel. The moment Jayne says the plan changed, you can see a reaction in Rivers brain, to show that she was aware of what Jayne was doing. It's the reason that shot was included.
She was a little aware when she first woke up from "being dead". Her first words upon waking were "Copper for a kiss" which is a reference to Judas' betrayal.
I believe the "petty" thing was genuine. They make a point of saying that they were playing her (Yolanda) "from the moment they opened that crate," which came immediately after the "petty" scene. The implication as we're watching the first time through is that Mal was stung by Inara's comment, and turned to Yolanda's promise of a big score in reaction. And that much is true, but the big reveal at the end is that we cut the scene in Inara's shuttle before it had actually played out, and that there was a second, unseen part of that conversation where the two of them hatched the scheme Inara lays out in the dumpster scene.
This episode has one of my favorite quotes that lives rent-free in my head: "He's my husband." "Well, who in the damn galaxy AIN'T?!" 😂 I wish we got more seasons for more YoSaffBridge.
For me it's when Durran says "Well, I appreciate your honesty. Not, you know, a lot." And then Mal's little look of understanding lmao. I use that line whenever I get the occasion, which is not often enough.
The argument between Mal and Inara, before Saffron is let out of her crate, is genuine. There's definitely a lot of tension between those two, and when they interact, there's usually some kind of fight happening. Sometimes it's playful, sometimes it's serious. There is no double standard though. When they first meet, Inara belittles Mal's livelihood by calling it his "little operation". A second later, when Mal finds out Inara supported the Alliance side in the war, he belittles her livelihood by calling her a whore. This continues throughout the show. Both of them know it bothers/offends/angers the other, but they do it anyway because they're both strong willed, both proud of what they do, and both seem to believe the other is better than the life they've chosen for themselves. I know it sounds like Mal is attacking Inara personally, but he isn't. It's her job that he's attacking, and she does the same.
Re: Guessing what they say 7:35 - My guess is you'd never have thought it could have been "Holy testicle Tuesday", which is what a translation page says it is...
One thing about the talk Mal and Inara had at the beginning. My take on why Mal had been sticking to the easy jobs was, well, look at what happened on the last big one. He got kidnapped and tortured and at one point even KILLED by Niska. I personally think he was still getting over it. And you'd think Inara would be able to pick up on that. But that challenge/argument from her did help to snap him out of it at least.
"Why is Mal still there?" On one level, because he's an ethical crook: she's his partner, even if she's going to double cross him, so he's going to do right by her...
Exactly, and there's the possibility she might not have double crossed him, not a big one, but Mal's generally not one to make the first move. He will, of course, set up contingencies when someone is likely to try to screw him over.
@@StarkRG Exactly. Mal always tries to be honorable and trustworthy among the thieving community. Knowing Patience was likely going to double cross them back in the first episode, he still tried to make an honest deal. Though same as this time, they prepared for the double cross, but until it comes he will continue with an honorable code. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.
Yeah, that conversation between Mal and Inara was legitimate. I expect after that is when he then told her about the "Saffron in a box" and they started coming up with the plan together, got the rest of the crew on board, etc.
In the example you gave of Inara and that boy who's father was pushing him to lose his virginity, Inara also helped the crew by getting that son to defy his father by removing the landlock on Serenity that was intended to capture Jayne. But even though Inara had manipulated something to her benefit and the benefit of her loved ones, she left that guy feeling empowered, strong, capable, and inspired to be a better person than his father. So it's definitely a great contrast to YoSaffBridge who enjoys leaving people feeling duped, and outsmarted.
Saffron had the contact for the fence that could sell the Lassiter. Something famous and niche like that, its like trying to sell a stolen ultra famous painting or document. Sure it might be enormously, ridiculously valuable on paper. But its so valuable, and so well known that it'd be very hard to find anyone to actually sell it too that wouldn't get you caught if you don't already have those kinds of contacts.
Mal cant just leave Saffron/Bridgette/Yolanda because if she gets caught she can rat him out to the authorities. Her other husband has no idea who Mal is.
23:34 I think you're right, where the scene cuts is where Mal reveals "YoSafBridge" to Inara, the frustration and the "petiness" is real, I cannot imagine this show would give us a scene like that as part of fooling us, and if not for us, who would they fake that conversation for?
'Sapphron' - The Dark Companion. 😊 The line 'I've seen you without clothes, but i"ve never assumed to see you na*ed!' should be used in other shows, it's really linguistical beautiful. The scene in the shuttle was real. The decison was made in that moment, to proof Inara being wrong, he doesn't kept her away from jobs on purpose and to integrate her more into the crew. The play started, when he opened the crate.
Yeah that bit in Inara's shuttle was real I think. She was in her crate until then. I'm not sure when they agreed to plot behind her back though. Obviously it's not shown on screen. I think Mal might have just dropped her off at another planet until that chat with Inara and once she said that stuff to him, he decided to take YoSafBridge, he he, up on her offer... BUT plan for her to double cross them.
24:47 Not really. It's more on equal terms. She doesn't like when he calls her a whore and she knows that he doesn't like it when she calls him a petty thief. She realized that it was a bit hypocritical of her to call him a petty thief the moment she tells him that she doesn't like to be called a whore.
The timeline went something like this: Mal and Inara talk, Inara calls Mal "petty," which makes him rethink the jobs they've been doing and decides to consider taking YoSaffBridge up on her offer Mal gets everyone together and tells them about YoSaffBridge being in a container and about her heist The crew, including Inara, come up with their own plan to beat YoSaffBridge and Mal to the rendezvous spot (at this point they don't know much about the heist other than there's something they're gonna get and will rendezvous once they get it), Zoe asks to be able to hit her, Jayne asks too, but is told that Zoe asked first and they can't all hit her or they'll give it away YoSaffBridge is let out of her crate (like a pet dog) and they put on that little show (with Wash being a tad over the top and Kaylee/Jewel Staite breaking character as she laughs at Wash's outburst) Everything plays out as we see it (Kaylee and Wash study the schematics and come up with the specifics of the heist plan _after_ YoSaffBridge is let out to play)
Inara's part was planned by Mal from the beginning. You can catch the smirk in the last scene in Inara's quarters when that part of the plan is already there.
I don't think Simon really threatened Jayne, although he did let Jayne stew a bit and realize how vulnerable he is when he's on the Doctor's table. In the end, Simon is a good man and a good doctor who would never harm a patient; he didn't even blink an eye stepping in as a doctor for that village that kidnapped him. River on the other hand... And that theme song really grows on you
15:08 once I knew about it, it is hard to think of anything else than the picture of Joss Whedon covering Nathans nether regions. must have been a fun sight.
With Saffron, it's not about the big score, it's the thrill of the hunt, using her skills of a seductress to get what she wants. At least that's the impression I got from her. In Our Mrs Reynolds, she could've taken Mal out with a swift kick to the head much earlier, instead she chose to break his resolve, making him the cause of his own downfall. And that's what makes her so maddening! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed this episode. For some reason it seems to be a popular one with the ladies. I have the _barest_ clue why. 🤣
Glad to see your enjoying the show Dakara, I like Summer aka River, I've seen her in Dollhouse(a Joss Whedon Show) and Sarah Conner Chronicles:Terminator Series. Sorry kinda distracted jamming Lindsey and wishing she was doing her Christmas Tour here in Utah. Keep enjoying the show, ya rock Dakara.
Always liked that for a show that's pretty funny _ normally_ they still always found an extra gear for the more overtly comedic episodes. Genuinely don't think there's _anything_ this cast couldn't do.
7:34 Mal says "神圣的睾丸" which is "holy testicles" (possibly a reference to the Ace Venture line "holy testicle Tuesday"). Disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing of Mandarin. This is from Google.
Mal has strong feelings for Inara which she reciprocates (as we find out later), but he hates what she does for a living i.e. a legal prostiture or more accurately a courtesan. She actually calls other 'working girls' "whores" herself, because they don't have the training and legal staus, not being a part of the Companions Guild. So basically Mal has this internal conflict that he "loves" her, but hates her profession, so he uses words that insult her profession (never her) to stop him from getting too close and she does the same, calling him a petty thief, when she knows he's a good and honourable man, despite being a smuggler and ne're-do-well, who was on the wrong side of a war.
My personal take is that although, yes, Mal has a double standard with regards to using hurtful language, he wouldn't call her what he does if it really hurts her feelings. (She's exasperated that "that didn't take long," not hurt.) I do think she's got some personal conflict with whether she thinks he's actually right and what that would mean for her choice of careers...
I think it is more the dynamic between Mal and Anara that makes the "petty" comment hurtful. Mal is "glib" with everyone, and he does NOT think through what he's going to say. Anara is usually thoughtful, cultured and considered in her words and actions. Mal may be quick on his feet, able to survive in the reckless life he chose, but he is too blunt, too impulsive to be "cultured". Anara uses words, and sometimes actions, to great effect, like the example you gave of talking a "boy" into rebelling against his father. When she "hurls an insult" at Mal... it stings more because she's so much less likely to do that. It also shows how much Mal affects her that a) she let him get under her skin enough to say things, and b) at how quickly she tries to back track when it hurts Mal. She can take the insult from Mal because he "isn't serious" but he can't take that one because she usually is.
I like your observation that Yo-Saf-Bridge is just Inara-gone-rogue. It seems to me similar to the Mal (faith to no faith) and Book (no faith to faith) counter-journey. PS. At the start of Ep. 12 ("The Message") please listen carefully to Jayne reading a letter. It is important to better understand Jayne...
Inana states in "Our Mrs Reynolds" that YoSafBridg has "had training'". Clearly she can recognise Companion training in others, even if said Companion either left, failed during their training and was kicked out or turned bad.
@Dakara I may have asked this before; how many (if any) of the Marvel films have you seen? If you’ve seen at least up to , there’s a comment out this one that I’ll make, but won’t if not.
Love the little scenes like River saying, "The hair will still be there, waiting." The ability to use feminine wiles in Star Wars terms would make Inara a Jedi (uses the light side of the force) and Yo Saf Bridge a Sith (uses the dark side of the force). I think Zoey punching Yo Saf Bridge was more for the audience that collectively felt Yo Saf Bridge needed to be punched.
I don't think Simon realized Jayne had double crossed them, until he figured out after River basically said he thinks he fooled us, ever since Ariel, then Simon clued in. If you keep using your feminine wilds, Dakara. I'll have no choice but to keep tuning in, lol
Nice reaction to another great episode! I agree that Mal could have left YoSafBridge behind but maybe he was worried that if she got caught she would snitch on him?
It's possible, but Mal is an ex-soldier and one of the traits he lives by (as do many other soldiers) is "leave no-one behind" as he demonstates throughout the series, such as coming back to rescue SImon and River, despite them thinking he "didn't like them". Even though he knew that YoSafBridg was bound to double-cross them, he couldn't leave her behind "in danger" because that's not who he is. Leaving her behind in the trash bin where she's 'safe' ,for the authorities to come and pick uo, that's a different matter.
You don't have to say season 1...just say Firefly....😞 12:28 Doh! That's 'cause you're(well, look a bit like in 2024+?) a ♀ PS. when YoSafBridge: She is clearly in IT for thé "high"... a dangerous sort - They are 😲 (19:44 OH Please...) PPS. OH! 24:38! So ONLY ♂s have double standards 😲 Now THAT is funny - from a pragmatic dane(one of the guys) point of view...
i have some theories about saffron and innara that aren't spoilers because there's not enough show to spoil. but the fact innara said she has companion training and some things Inara said to kailee and others makes it seem like the Companion Houses are a BIG deal in the alliance and a big part of the power and control system. part of why mal hates it so much. and included in that is the fact that Inara probably can't marry. (she says its complicated in an earlier episode- her love for mal is a complication. Inara says she thinks saffron has training at the level of companion and I have to wonder if basically Saffron is like companion version of river- a companion on the run, maybe a little bit on a kill-bill revenge rampage
I'll never get the dialog during the intro. It's obvious right from the start that Mal and YoSaffBridge know each other. Monty seems to realise this, yet the fact that YSB uses Mal's name is somehow a "gotcha"? Also, Hendricks' fighting skills aren't convincing at all, which is a bit distracting considering that YSB is presumably supposed to quite proficient at hand-to-hand combat. In the end though, I would rank this episode pretty high.
9:54 Not only is Ms. Dakara lovely and insightful, but now she's quoting Phoebe Buffay? 😻 12:56 Between re-watches of this show and Reaction Vids, I don't know that there's a man-ass I've seen more than Nathan Fillion's. 🤔🍑

"Also, I can kill you with my brain" is the last thing you want to hear from an unstable genius whose brain was experimented on 😅
I would be afraid of…
😂
She could be bluffing, but in no way am I testing it.
How about "I'm going to do to you what the Reavers do."
River knew what Jayne was up to when they were in the imaging bay at the hospital back on Ariel.
The moment Jayne says the plan changed, you can see a reaction in Rivers brain, to show that she was aware of what Jayne was doing. It's the reason that shot was included.

"I seen you without your clothes on, before. Never thought I'd see you naked."
One of the greatest lines of dialog ever written.
Yep, great episode. Got to love YoSafBridge. I really think if the series had continued beyond the half-season we would have seen her yet again.
You mean BridgeFronLanda?
"I have a condition!" Saffron's parting line
One of the reasons they couldn't keep a straight face is Nathan had a modesty cover on his pubic area with a picture of Joss Whedon.

It was so much fun to see her again... ah, well. Probably not worth the risk.
A couple of the episodes suggest a time line where the various episodes are about a month apart...
The crew's reaction to Mal entering the ship naked were real. Nathan Fillion pinned a photo of the show's creator Joss Whedon on his modesty sock 😅
Knowing the controversies surrounding JW, it's oddly fitting.
The timeline went something like this:
Mal and Inara talk, Inara calls Mal "petty," which makes him rethink the jobs they've been doing and decides to consider taking YoSaffBridge up on her offer
Mal gets everyone together and tells them about YoSaffBridge being in a container and about her heist
The crew, including Inara, come up with their own plan to beat YoSaffBridge and Mal to the rendezvous spot (at this point they don't know much about the heist other than there's something they're gonna get and will rendezvous once they get it), Zoe asks to be able to hit her, Jayne asks too, but is told that Zoe asked first and they can't all hit her or they'll give it away
YoSaffBridge is let out of her crate (like a pet dog) and they put on that little show (with Wash being a tad over the top and Kaylee/Jewel Staite breaking character as she laughs at Wash's outburst)
Everything plays out as we see it (Kaylee and Wash study the schematics and come up with the specifics of the heist plan _after_ YoSaffBridge is let out to play)

12:28 Doh! That's 'cause you're(well, look a bit like in 2024+?) a ♀
PS. when YoSafBridge: She is clearly in IT for thé "high"... a dangerous sort - They are 😲 (19:44 OH Please...)
PPS. OH! 24:38! So ONLY ♂s have double standards 😲 Now THAT is funny - from a pragmatic dane(one of the guys) point of view...
Your hair is _lovely._
i have some theories about saffron and innara that aren't spoilers because there's not enough show to spoil. but the fact innara said she has companion training and some things Inara said to kailee and others makes it seem like the Companion Houses are a BIG deal in the alliance and a big part of the power and control system. part of why mal hates it so much. and included in that is the fact that Inara probably can't marry. (she says its complicated in an earlier episode- her love for mal is a complication. Inara says she thinks saffron has training at the level of companion and I have to wonder if basically Saffron is like companion version of river- a companion on the run, maybe a little bit on a kill-bill revenge rampage
i don't think the guy is actually descent. maybe would have been a good partner but was a war criminal
12:56 Between re-watches of this show and Reaction Vids, I don't know that there's a man-ass I've seen more than Nathan Fillion's. 🤔🍑
