do not envy you doing the work and the cost! however it is entertainment at its best. I hope youtube compensates you well. it really looking like you have to split the house and the undercarriage to change that giant seal... >👍👍
The pistons do not have to go in any order. Yes, you would feel the slop. Another good test is to cover the hole in the bottom of the barrel/block with your finger and see if it pushes air and pulls vacuum when you move the piston in the bore. Usually there is a small hole in the middle of the piston slippers that is used for lubrication, blow air into the back of the piston to make sure that there isn't any junk in there. I rebuilt pumps and motors for a few years and work at a shop now where we do mainly cylinder work. Hit me up if you have questions.
Excellent resource is a man who knows the finer points. I hope Matt is keen to touch base on these parts with you? I'm certain if done proper these things will go for an age. Done with oversights you revisit the same thing repeatedly. As I have witnessed. Great offer and the tip on blowing the shit out of the pistons.
Then you know bench testing the motor is step one to determine the condition of the motor. I have 15 years of experience with equipment and the first step is proper diagnostic testing either in or out of the machine. Ripping apart a motor just because is pointless
@@JimsNBHomestead I wouldn't say pointless to not test it beforehand with all the water he found in the system, definitely not ideal though. I will say, the pump is going to be a different beast, that might be a can of worms if he digs into that.
You have my admiration for your willingness to get into the workings and take everything apart to find the root causes of failures. Then to put it all back together! Makes me wish that I was healthy enough to emulate your work, Great Job!... Looking forward to your next post.
That sound of that oil and water running out reminded me of the day after having subway for lunch then Taco Bell for dinner. Charlie is a good girl!! Give her love for me and play lots of ball with her. Can’t wait until the next Charlie and Matt show!!!
There may be a lot of your subs who are not in the business but just love watching old iron being revived. I did actually touch a Kubota mini parked in my backyard when the sewer pipe was being replaced. I probably touched an old road grader in the late 40’s working on our gravel road. Keep wrenching!
I'll bet you were happy when that hole in your shirt turned out to be the perfect spot to mount your mic. 🤣😂 Seriously though, Matt, that Dozer came out mint! I can't wait to go on the adventure of rebuilding this machine. I love dozers but these machines are my favorite! Thanks Matt! And be careful! 🤩😀
I like watching your videos on this equipment because it's unusual. Everyone has videos on getting an engine to run or doing standard automotive work. Very rarely do you find rebuilds on the stuff you get yourself into. And you follow the manuals to do it correctly. Good job.
Hi, you said you didn’t know anything about excavators in your earlier video. Well you sure know your way around the gears and hydraulics and everything else as well. And it’s great to see that you take your safely as your number one. You are one very knowledgeable guy. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You have, I my opinion for what its worth, made some good decisions on what to replace in the swing drive. It is a good idea to mark referencing/ witnessing marks on every thing that comes apart for any reason on everything you can, that practice has saved my bacon numerous times over the years, the other rule in hydraulics is keep it clean on reassembly, if you think you you have clean, clean it again, especially when working on spool valves, the ole boy that trained me in/on hydraulics was a clean freak. You are going to have an awesome machine when you get this up and running again, looking forward to this series, thanks for the update.
It is possible to repair that part that the seal surface was messed up on, however the cost may be as much as the new part: Flame spraying is ideal for surfaces like that. It is often used to repair galled surfaces on shafts where bearings rode. I look forward to following your adventures with the excavator as I did with the Cat.
Great start - maybe it would be an idea to invest in some tools for making/crimping hydraulic hoses yourself? it seems like this one will need alot of new hoses before it's done
@@nathaniellarson8 it would be where I am at - here you see these tools fairly often come up on auction at a reasonable price - but I have no idea about the pacific northwest. Also I would be surprised if this is the last piece of machinery Matt aquire which needs new hoses.
Good thing about bearing is that their strength is also their weakness in that if you put a weld over the width of its border, it cracks. Do that on both outer and inner ring and it comes loose. That's when you can clean everything up, cool the axle (dry ice is nice) and warm (there are bearing warmers out there) the new bearing and it should plop right on. Also, 21:18 - cute robot head you found there.
Much better video editing and commentary. Improvement.... I look forward to seeing most of the mechanical parts on the excavator. Glad you are continuing the videos. Entertaining and Instructional.
You are the best! I'm glad that the dog is there for support. So many parts. It looks like you may have saved it just in time before more damage was done. Once everything is clean and inspected you should be in good shape. May the force be with you!!!!!
Actually looks less complicated than the D4. Most of the wear is just from sitting water stuck inside the housing. Very interested in seeing more of the rebuild in the future.
I am so glad our company just does short term leases and we get new equip delivered each year or so, I cant even imagine the down time on this type of issue. Plus we got rid of all the mechanics on staff, not that they could pull off more than a grease job.
You must have big brass ones for jumping right in on the hydraulics! Hydraulics and electrical are my two worst things to tackle, I envy you right now the way you just jumped in head first!
Super excited for this series. You killed it with the dozer. Can’t wait to watch all these videos and justify making my own questionable excavator purchase.
I bought a 2005 john deere 35c excavator that looked like it exploded, some parts here👈some parts there👉 couldn't pass it up for $500. It's not nearly as crusty as this one and only has 2000hrs so these videos give me hope too. I found another motor for $700 and need maybe $400 in fittings and hoses. If I can get a working machine for only 2k that will be a pretty sweet deal.
I just rebuilt the shuttle shifter on my Case 580SE backhoe. What you're doing makes that look like child's play. Good luck getting it all back together.
Looks like a jig saw puzzle Rather straight forward and Happy that you do have a lot of salvageable parts. I am Looking forward to more,, Thanks for the video..
I have a feeling that this might be the start of another complete rebuild of another piece of equipment.. Looking forward to many videos of this one !!!!!😀😀😀😀😀
For cutting off stuck collars/inner races i find its better to grid out a semi-circle rather than cut a slot at an angle. Just use the blade in the same plane as the collar and work at it up and down until the material is thin enough to crack. Its much harder to cut a slot at an angle without damaging the part you are keeping, working in the same plane you can get all the way up to any flange, and you can see the crack when it happens.
I just found your channel by accident, and it's addicting because of the pacing, Charlie the dog, and it's interesting technology. I've never driven an excavator, never will but it's fun to watch. That WD-40 foam degreaser is what I use and it works Great, as you can see how clean the swing device got.
I don’t know if you get credit for multiple watches but count on me. On my EX there is a plug on top near the boom cyl. to fill the grease for the slew gear. The bottom cover you took off is to drain/clean. I believe it’s to be filled with grease vs oil.
Best degreaser I’ve used is Super Clean. Get a jug of it and get one of those gallon spray jugs and fill it with that and some water and it lasts forever since a little goes a long way
Well done with the progress it's good to see Charlie making sure that you are taking regular breaks whilst working so you don't overdo it everyone needs a four legged furry work colleague to help your well-being keep up with the great work looking forward to the next video
Thanks Matt for inviting us into your barn shop. Great videography! Nice project. Always wondered what was inside those excavators . Thank goodness you have video and manuals to refer to to put Humpty back together again.
When I should be doing my work on my JD 6500 or woodworking projects I find myself watching your videos or @Surviving Ringworm before I get started. Nice work on the Cat. I can't wait to see the escavator restored to operations. Find a steel fabrication shop for some hardwood 4x4 oak pallets. Many around the Thumb of Michigan are available. They have maple & walnut boards on them too sometimes.
Great job I think you're right about that seal hydraulic pumps are really hard on you can remember things like putting it back together and stuff I used to work at a hydraulic pumps it's very difficult good luck to you
There shouldn't be any water in there only grease that spring you found is of a previous leak (bottom seal) you should clean all that out with diesel and petrol mix and blow it out with power washer there should be nothing in there only clean grease and make sure you seal it with gasket sealer when refitting the swing box the water can get in through the swivel joint as well check the seal on it its visible from outside the machine its like a rubber boot it keeps out water and dirt. Good luck with it 👍
Your videos are some of the best on RUclips - your knowledge and attention to detail are head and shoulders above 99% of every one else.

Off brand oven cleaner is an inexpensive degreaser. As usual I’m amazed at how much you are able to take on and finish.
I ❤ Hitachi! (I have a Hitachi drill press. 🤣I LOVE it! Hitachi makes machines bigger than Matt's! I am surprised they don't make motorcycles.)

Oven cleaner is the cheapest way to degrease stuff and it works great 👍🏼
You are going to have a really nice unit when done.

Oven cleaner works damn good too for decreasing stuff.
Brave man to tackle this project. Great dog!
Excellent editing , excellent work , love your style , “ just the facts please”
Here we go. Let's dig in brother
Love your pup, mine is the same way w his ball
You are brave for taking on rebuilding this unit, but you will save thousands from sending it out. love your thouroghness
I see your dog is as helpful as always.😃😃
Oven cleaner is the best degreaser. Plus it helps with rust
I still say- your blithe assurance and confident progress belies your naivete etc....your sensible approach and sure luck are a bonus...!
Great start - maybe it would be an idea to invest in some tools for making/crimping hydraulic hoses yourself? it seems like this one will need alot of new hoses before it's done
Not enough hoses there to invest in that, just wouldn't make sense. Colored wire, paint pens, and Parker stores are your friend.
There are assemble yourself reusable hydraulic fittings. Not sure if worthwhile here.
@@nathaniellarson8 it would be where I am at - here you see these tools fairly often come up on auction at a reasonable price - but I have no idea about the pacific northwest. Also I would be surprised if this is the last piece of machinery Matt aquire which needs new hoses.

Oven cleaner is fantastic for doing motors,Spray on Leave overnight times it'll even remove paint

Much better video editing and commentary.
Improvement....
I look forward to seeing most of the mechanical parts on the excavator.
Glad you are continuing the videos.
Entertaining and Instructional.
Excellent video quality. 👍 Your dog reminds me of when I had a black lab. I simply existed to throw the ball. 😃
My Shepard is just like yours! She just wants to play all the time dropping her toys into whatever I am working on.
The worst is when you are digging a hole
Very Good Job My Friend ❤❤❤❤❤
You are the best! I'm glad that the dog is there for support. So many parts. It looks like you may have saved it just in time before more damage was done. Once everything is clean and inspected you should be in good shape. May the force be with you!!!!!
Matt would be well served with someone sending him a good sized box of used tennis balls. Or the dog would, which amounts to the same thing here.
And one of those machines used for tennis practice that keeps throwing the balls out automatically 😂😂
Met a suggestion for you , get a three ring binder with plastic sleeves to put your repair manual in it to keep clean and in order.
Yes, it definitely looks like a big giant complicated mess! You have more guts than I do tearing into that thing! Kudos!
Actually looks less complicated than the D4. Most of the wear is just from sitting water stuck inside the housing. Very interested in seeing more of the rebuild in the future.
Degrees inside of the slew ring. And a good wash out and fill with some oil
And cover the hole while working on the slew motor.
Always good to see you Matt!
Thanks Matt! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏼👍🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Whoa ho, here we go again, anticipating lots more.
Matt, you are so brave. I pictured the springs flying everywhere! Lol
Take care

Looks like fun...
The whole thing Looks pretty complicated for just a swing motor.
New Project! Yes!!
Good video. I new that was going to run in your arm pit I’ve had it happen so many times but you remained calm
Out of everything I subscribe to here on RUclips, these are the videos I look forward to the most.
