Im very pleased to see Death Magnetic get deserved shout outs. The fire flung at it over its production at the time, I can understand. But, the songs themselves are a brilliant meeting point between Justice...and Black Album. All Nightmare Long is a GREAT example of how good they still are.
I think Death Magnetic is a great album, as is Hardwired. If they had just cut 3 or 4 tracks off that album it would have been much better recieved I think
@ThatMetalBloke Absolutely. 👍🤘 With Hardwired- remove ManUnkind and Murder One, give..Revenge and Savage a bit of editing to make them tighter and meatier, and you've got a bloody excellent modern MetallicA album. I Love the diversity in Hardwired- disc 1 has 6 tracks all different from eachother. Each compliments oneanother whilst really standing apart on their own. Halo of Fire is a powerhouse song! With 72Seasons, I was initially let down by the album, as I felt it all sounded the same. Too many familiar riffs, and Kirk's constant ReLoading of his usual WahWah licks. But it absolutely grew on me over time, and now I really like it- but, like Hardwired, it has some overlong, overwrought moments and one or two too many songs in there. Id have liked a bit more range in the songs on 72Seasons aswell- some more clean tone passages, peaks and valleys like that to give the songs a bit more character.👍
I’m so glad you said that. In the past, I’ve expressed that DM is the bridge between Justice and Black Album and I hold it in high regard. Have you listened to the ai videos where it puts James’s prime vocals over DM tracks? It’s mind and ear boggling!
@kalebpost20 I have indeed, mate. And you are right on the money about them being mind boggling. It is Incredible to hear AI '88 Hetfield for instance, in perfect sync sing over a modern Metallica monolith like again, All Nightmare Longl. But- just as interesting are fan reworks of songs. I have so many examples of that from youtubers like 'State of Mercury" who rerecord modern Metallica with old album tones. Imagine if that album was released in 1990 inbetween both those albums. It would be as highly regarded as the first 4 themselves are, I think.👍
Agree 100%! To me it’s not just the actual music but the FEELINGS. I cant remember a song without vocals that makes me feel so much emotion. Once someone knows the story and background of this song, it changes dramatically

I was getting ready to type out a scathing comment for not putting Call of Cthulu in masterpiece, but you fixed it. This is seriously a blueprint for anyone who wants to do an instrumental song. It's almost 9 minutes long, but never drags. I honestly had to look at the proper time, it doesn't feel like it's that long. It's just absolutely beautiful.
Awesome ranking! My favourite Metallica song is And Justice for All. The worst song is Invisible Kid, in my opinion. Song rankings are SO hard most of the time, but I'd like to see you do more of these videos.
I love this ranking 🤘. As with any human being I would disagree with some things on this ranking but I really enjoyed these takes. I loved the knowledge and thought you had with these these ranking. Also I love to see the love even for the newer stuff especially since I actually really loved those albums but many others don't, but I digress, amazing list 👌🤘
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Some obvious placings and of course, some controversial ones. Noticed you omitted No Leaf Clover and -Human off S&M (unless I wasn't paying attention!) and I Disappear. Where would they place?
I can't remember what tiers I had in the video now 😂 No Leaf Clover and -human are perfect and I Disappear is ok. I used to enjoy it more but now it's just kind of meh
Great ranking, mostly agreed on everything and overall I just want to say I'm a big Mettallica fan and I'm finally going to see them live next year. I attended. concert in 2017 but got really sick and had to leave before they came on..
ooohhh. like that. Hmmm... i was thinking you would rank all the 120 or so songs in order. Which sounded like quite the undertaking. I suppose this format is also reasonable
Hell of a feat...well done. I wouldn't have been able to concentrate with the neighbours noise on top of the actual difficulty of ranking the tracks. Sterling job.
I can't agree more about Enter Sandman. It may be the most overplayed song in metal, but it is undoubtably a great song. I think I could appreciate it more if I went about 5 years without hearing it at all.
Your ratings of the St Anger songs back up what I have said for the last 20 years - with different production and some guitar solos it would be held in much higher regard.
“To live is to die” the early influence of sadness made me search for similar types of genres/bands like My dying bride, Draconian, Thy light, Ellende, Dreariness, Lethian Dreams, The third and the mortal, the Gathering, Tristania, Sirenia, Austrre, Doomvs, Nocturnal depression and many more 💪👍
Old school metal-head here. Discovered Metallica in 86 as a teenager. Master of Puppets was the first Metallica album I bought, quickly followed by everything else they had done to that point. I think you have excellent taste, but I can't seem to place anything Metallica into bad or terrible unless I add the caveat, "when compared to other Metallica tracks." I would rather hear my least favorite Metallica album than most other artists' best albums, excluding Lulu, which you rightly left out. This video popped up in my algorithm and is my first time checking out your channel, and I gotta get this out of the way. You look way too much like Sean Connery for me not to say something. 😂
You make a valid point. All of these songs are in relation to the Metallica catalogue and not other bands. I have been told about the Sean Connery similarity before and I much prefer it to some of the names people call me 🤣
Load/Reload: Had there been just One Single album of the best songs of both released, I think it would have been welcomed and favoured more. Bleeding Me is classic Tony Iommii- listen to Black Sabbath's "I" after hearing it, and you can hear Sabbath's influence on Hetfields mid 90s writing. Until it Sleeps meanwhile reminds me of Danzig- that eerie Gothic, Blues Rock.
I'll do the 80s stuff Hit the Lights- Good (used to be great to me, but I think I "grew out" of it) The Four Horsemen- Perfect Motorbreath- Good Jump in the Fire- Neutral Anasthesia (Pulling Teeth)- Neutral (can't really say it's bad tbh) Whiplash- Perfect Phantom Lord- Perfect No Remorse- Great Seek and Destroy- Perfect Metal Militia- Bad (the verse riff is one of the worst riffs they've ever done) Fight Fire With Fire- Great Ride the Lightning- Perfect For Whom the Bell Tolls- Masterpiece Fade to Black- Masterpiece Trapped Under Ice- Great Escape- Perfect (yes I love this song) Creeping Death- Perfect (used to be my favorite Metallica song but it's lost a little for me) The Call of Kuthulu- Great Battery- Great Master of Puppets- Neutral (sorry, I don't see the hype, I never have) The Thing That Should Not Be- Good Sanitarium- Perfect Disposable Heroes- Perfect Leper Messiah- Great Orion- Great Damage Inc- Perfect Blackened- Masterpiece And Justice For All- Great Eye of the Beholder- Great One- Perfect The Shortest Straw- Masterpiece Harvester of Sorrow- Great The Frayed Ends of Sanity- Masterpiece To Live is to Die- Neutral (sorry Cliff, can't get into this one) Dyers Eve- Great
2:25 I disagree. I mean Thrash was bound to come at a certain point, it was just a matter of time. Dave certainly had a massive if not the biggest influence in the genre, but you can't just straight up say it all depended on him when bands like Slayer or Exodus, completely unrelated to Dave, all simultaneously released similar tracks with a VERY similar style. It's fair to say nobody really knows the origins of Thrash, but Metallica (specially Dave Mustaine) being the most popular band is obviously gonna give them the most credit.
Great job. We have similar views on Metallica's work. Most the lower tear is with load and reload songs, in which I agree. Death Magnetic is a better album than given credit for, I agree again. Only thing I can remember I disagreed with is to live is to die is a great track for me
I think your list is pretty accurate to everything I think about Metallica. The problem with St Anger is that it's a good album but when you compare it to previous Metallica album it's terrible lol. If it was a bands first album it would be decent for sure.
What a chore this must've been to do, so thank you for your service lol. No problem with this list at all. My favorite song just may be Dyer's Eve. Listened to it in the shower this morning and I think it's Lars' best performance.
I personally would have put Blackened and Nothing Else Matter up in masterpiece and possibly Enter Sandman too but this was a fun watch and solid list.
I've been wondering if people's attitudes to Metallica's discography is related to age at all. In 1988 I was 17, my favourite bands were Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden and Helloween and my favourite albums of that year were South of Heaven, ...And Justice For All, Seventh Son and Keeper part 2 (which surprised no one). Justice is still my all time favourite Metallica album. In that context it wasn't surprising that I found Metallica's albums from the black album on to be various levels of disappointing. I still like songs that have elements of 80s Metallica in them (there have been a lot more of those since Death Magnetic) but the rest don't do much for me.
Fixxxer is the last master piece song that Metallica have put out. Lyrically, so many layers of guitars and riffs, the tempo and intro. It also has one of James's best vocal performances. It is in my top 10 for sure. I don't think any newer Metallica song has come close to this since.

Cheers bro. It is interesting seeing your list compared to mind and how the same band can inspire different reactions from different people. I really need to give Lulu another try as I never really gave it a chance.
@ThatMetalBloke I enjoyed it in parts. The lyrics are interesting. It's definitely not close to a 10/10 album, but I think it has its merits. What I did notice when listening to the entire Metallica catalogue is how many of their songs are needlessly long, including Kill Em All, which I thought was the shorter, punkier record until I relistened to it!
Their inability to edit themselves down is one of their major downsides unfortunately. I think so many of their later albums would have been so much better with less songs and shorter edits
Sad But True. Always reminds me of the Freddie Mercury tribute. I got rid of my VHS of that years ago and reeeeeally regret it. Such a great Metallica set.
FFWF was the first song that I heard not only from Metallica, but the whole Thrash scene! I was 12, and the only heavy thing i had heard before that was Cream and Zeppelin!
The problem with Saint Anger was more of context! It was good to hate the album and say everything wrong with production, selling to numetal antics and the internal drama... The sound of the drums are just unsufferable. Yet, as you did, going through it song by song, you don't get bad results. It has memorable riffs and great lyrics. I can understand how the album as a concept is wrong across Metallica's discography, but the songs can be saved seen individually. I've got your back, mate!
Man must be of the same vintage. I found myself agreeing with just about every pick. Only exception is that I would’ve had To Live Is To Die higher. Otherwise awesome list
Appreciate the post, and this coming from a fanboy. Point 1 - Fuck Mustaine, point 2 - AJFA is my favorite metal of all time, I would put it above MOP any day. I enjoy Load/ReLoad over Black anyday. (can't agree with anything you said about the material). Yes, I continue to listen to St. Anger to this day.
Five tracks that spring to mind immediately that I love, in no particular order Fight Fire With Fire Orion For Whom The Bell Tolls The Four Horsemen Welcome Home Sanitarium
@@mynameismud-qd9vu Sounds like a personal thing. Not a lie in sight on this end. It's called artistic growth and personal taste. And honestly, if they'd released RTH and MOP again and again, I wouldn't be the fan I am. I don't enjoy redundancy.

Also I love to see the love even for the newer stuff especially since I actually really loved those albums but many others don't, but I digress, amazing list 👌🤘
hell yea great video - greetings from Finland
Another fun video dude 🤘
This would take me about a month to do 😆
My top 5 is
1. To Live Is to Die
2. St. Anger
3. Frantic
4. Battery
5. The Unforgiven II
That was enjoyable. : ) I love to hear Lovecraft's influence mentioned. Incidentally, The Shadow of Innsmouth is also my favourite HPL work.
Thanks for taking the time to put this together. Some obvious placings and of course, some controversial ones. Noticed you omitted No Leaf Clover and -Human off S&M (unless I wasn't paying attention!) and I Disappear. Where would they place?
I can't remember what tiers I had in the video now 😂
No Leaf Clover and -human are perfect and I Disappear is ok. I used to enjoy it more but now it's just kind of meh
@@ThatMetalBloke Yeah, -Human is criminally underrated! I really enjoy No Leaf Clover too.
You have great music taste!
So do you :)
Great ranking, mostly agreed on everything and overall I just want to say I'm a big Mettallica fan and I'm finally going to see them live next year. I attended. concert in 2017 but got really sick and had to leave before they came on..
My top 5 favourite Metallica Songs
1. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
2. Master of Puppets
3. Fade to Black
4. Blackened
5. The Four Horsemen
I would agree with most of these ratings. However I would have To Live Is To Die in masterpiece.
Same here. My favourite instrumental from Metallica
ooohhh. like that. Hmmm... i was thinking you would rank all the 120 or so songs in order. Which sounded like quite the undertaking. I suppose this format is also reasonable
24:04 "Purify is actually kinda quite a good song" 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
you know it’s an all time band when he can’t call a single song “bad” on the first 5 studio albums
Damn right 🤘
Thanks for the video, Ben! I am surprised to see St Anger being rated higher than Reload. Is Buckethead next for the ranking of all his songs? 😂
I was surprised to see how high up a lot of the St Anger stuff was as well 🤣
The Outlaw Torn is a masterpiece for me.
Absolute masochism!
I highly suggest giving Room of Mirrors a real chance. Sooo many great moments on that one
Room of mirrors is soooo good. The harmonies are eargasms!
My top 5:
1. Fade to Black
2. Creeping Death
3. Master of Puppets
4. Disposable Heroes
5. For Whom The Bell Tools
I'm one of those blokes that don't really like anything after the Black album, but "Bleeding Me" and "Outlaw Torn" are 2 of my very favorites
2 of their absolute best 👍
Of the songs which are a bit less hyped Damage Inc. Is a favourite of mine. The riffs, the solo, the attitude. Love it
Great song for sure 🤘
AJ4A is my fave Metallica album. Eye of the beholder is very underrated
Eye of the Beholder is very underrated. I enjoy a lot if the riffs on that one
You have to listen to Room of Mirrors! One of my favorite tracks from 72 seasons!
Blackened is a masterpiece
Man, Room of Mirrors and Chasing Light are two of the best tracks on that album.
I'll do the 80s stuff
Hit the Lights- Good (used to be great to me, but I think I "grew out" of it)
The Four Horsemen- Perfect
Motorbreath- Good
Jump in the Fire- Neutral
Anasthesia (Pulling Teeth)- Neutral (can't really say it's bad tbh)
Whiplash- Perfect
Phantom Lord- Perfect
No Remorse- Great
Seek and Destroy- Perfect
Metal Militia- Bad (the verse riff is one of the worst riffs they've ever done)
Fight Fire With Fire- Great
Ride the Lightning- Perfect
For Whom the Bell Tolls- Masterpiece
Fade to Black- Masterpiece
Trapped Under Ice- Great
Escape- Perfect (yes I love this song)
Creeping Death- Perfect (used to be my favorite Metallica song but it's lost a little for me)
The Call of Kuthulu- Great
Battery- Great
Master of Puppets- Neutral (sorry, I don't see the hype, I never have)
The Thing That Should Not Be- Good
Sanitarium- Perfect
Disposable Heroes- Perfect
Leper Messiah- Great
Orion- Great
Damage Inc- Perfect
Blackened- Masterpiece
And Justice For All- Great
Eye of the Beholder- Great
One- Perfect
The Shortest Straw- Masterpiece
Harvester of Sorrow- Great
The Frayed Ends of Sanity- Masterpiece
To Live is to Die- Neutral (sorry Cliff, can't get into this one)
Dyers Eve- Great
ORION
My favourite song of all time
2:25 I disagree.
Only thing I can remember I disagreed with is to live is to die is a great track for me
You forgot to put lords of summer, absolute banger.
I think your list is pretty accurate to everything I think about Metallica. The problem with St Anger is that it's a good album but when you compare it to previous Metallica album it's terrible lol. If it was a bands first album it would be decent for sure.
As an OG metalhead myself, I almost completely agree with this ranking.
I think Crown Of Barbed Wire and Inamorata are both masterpiece songs. Totally underrated.
What a chore this must've been to do, so thank you for your service lol. No problem with this list at all. My favorite song just may be Dyer's Eve. Listened to it in the shower this morning and I think it's Lars' best performance.
It wasn't easy thats for sure 🤣
Dyers Eve is an incredible song and has always been one of my favourites
I personally would have put Blackened and Nothing Else Matter up in masterpiece and possibly Enter Sandman too but this was a fun watch and solid list.
My top 5 :
Damage inc.
Fight fire with fire
Dyers eve
Battery
Either Blackened or Trapped under ice
personally ride the lightning is a masterpiece
Hey i made that tierlist template about 5 years ago, and added 72 seasons the day is was announced!
Womp womp
Nice. It was a big help for this video 🤘
@@ThatMetalBloke sorry about the text being a bit small I made it on my phone lol
I was happy to have a template to work from. Great job 🤘
I wish more people would put garage band on their tier lists😢
Room of Mirrors is such a great song. It is definitely my favorite song from the 72 Seasons album.
It's a shame that we never got to see your ranking of Room of Mirrors, but it's still a great list 🤘
this is my ranking (Only Masterpieces are ranked):

Bad: Ronnie, Dirty Window, Invisible Kid, All Within My Hands
Terrible: Poor Twisted Me
Disaster: Hi D*ck 😂
I agree with your ranking of "If Darkness Had a Son". It's a great song that doesn't get much attention. It sounds much better live too!
Whoah there! 🔥

@@ThatMetalBloke I completely agree with you
My knowledge and taste for Metallica ends with "and justice for all".
But, this is a Metal Bloke video, so it's going to be good 👍
Cheers mate. Hope you get something from it 🤘
yeah, fade to black is a masterpiece
Amazing song
Imo Orion is their best song, and ride the lightning is their best album
(Edit: hell yeah.)
Orion will always be my favourite. Incredible song 🤘
Sad But True. Always reminds me of the Freddie Mercury tribute. I got rid of my VHS of that years ago and reeeeeally regret it. Such a great Metallica set.
Gotta disagree on Hero, Mama, Bitch, and Hate, those songs are good. But I am happy to see THJB get some love very underrated track
FFWF was the first song that I heard not only from Metallica, but the whole Thrash scene! I was 12, and the only heavy thing i had heard before that was Cream and Zeppelin!
If you heard about bmth and if yes what do you think about them. I know that's not your piece of cake but I'm wondering
I don't mind some of BMTH but I'm not a huge fan
The problem with Saint Anger was more of context! It was good to hate the album and say everything wrong with production, selling to numetal antics and the internal drama... The sound of the drums are just unsufferable. Yet, as you did, going through it song by song, you don't get bad results. It has memorable riffs and great lyrics. I can understand how the album as a concept is wrong across Metallica's discography, but the songs can be saved seen individually. I've got your back, mate!
I was surprised at how many St Anger songs I was fine with as well. I wish I had done this list before I did my most hated albums list 🤣
Five tracks that spring to mind immediately that I love, in no particular order
Fight Fire With Fire
Orion
For Whom The Bell Tolls
The Four Horsemen
Welcome Home Sanitarium
Orion is my favourite song by Metallica. I will never tire of that song
The thing that should not be, is metallicas best song, think but there is so many great songs that metallica has done, one of the best bands
All I know is disposable heroes better be in the masterpiece tier
Can you do the same with iron maiden? Amazing idea well done 💪🤘🙏
Shortest straw and mama said deserve better
I think you're overlooking Phantom Lord, such a banger. I think it's a shame you rated St. Anger above it. Loved the video, though!
Purify higher than Holier than thou should be illegal.
Too Far Gone Load-y Blues? I think you were thinking of a different song.
Lets go Orion 1. Team.
I own through And Justice for All and that's it! I could rank the songs off those albums, but never from the rest of their discography.
Don't be....one of them. Metallica was always more than just "the first four" *eye rolls*
@@PadanFain-yp2yz Yeah ok lol. I'd rather tell the ugly truth than a pretty lie. No doubt they'll end up on his "Bands that sold out" future video.
@@mynameismud-qd9vu Sounds like a personal thing. Not a lie in sight on this end. It's called artistic growth and personal taste. And honestly, if they'd released RTH and MOP again and again, I wouldn't be the fan I am. I don't enjoy redundancy.
Inamorata is Perfect to me
Great tier list! Where would you put your neighbour's drains on the list though?
Inamorata is a masterpiece, so is anesthesia
