    ‪@ImagingbySony‬ ‪@DJI‬
    ‪@cameraconspiracies‬ I love you man
    In my latest video, "Best Hiking Camera 2024," I delve into the camera gear that has dramatically improved the quality of my hiking videos. I'm excited to share why I believe the DJI Pocket 3 is the ultimate choice for anyone searching for the best hiking camera or best backpacking camera. Unlike typical action cams, the DJI Pocket 3 features a gimbal rather than relying solely on digital stabilization. This key difference eliminates the common issue of digital 'mushing' found in other cameras, ensuring that each frame of your footage is crisp and clear.
    I find the DJI Pocket 3 exceptionally user-friendly, perfect right out of the box for both beginners and seasoned adventurers. You can start filming with minimal setup, using the default settings which provide excellent results. For those who like a bit of customization, I recommend adjusting the sharpness and noise reduction slightly to mimic the aesthetic of more expensive mirrorless cameras. Plus, it comes with a handy microphone in the Creator combo, making it super easy to switch the camera to vlog mode and capture great audio directly.
    To add versatility to my shooting, I often pair the DJI Pocket 3 with my smartphone, specifically the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which allows for a range of shooting techniques and better control over video processing. This combination is ideal for achieving different framing options and enhancing video quality in various lighting conditions.
    For those who are interested in higher-end equipment, I also use the Sony ZV1, which is a fantastic full-frame camera that offers incredible video quality and dynamic stabilization-perfect for capturing smooth footage on rugged trails. Paired with Sony F4 lenses, this setup is not only high quality but also lightweight and easy to carry, which is crucial for hiking.
    This guide aims to help fellow outdoor enthusiasts find the best camera setup that combines performance, versatility, and ease of use. Whether you're just starting out or you're looking to upgrade your hiking vlogs, these tips should help you capture stunning visuals on your next outdoor adventure. If you have any questions or need further advice on gear and usage, feel free to drop a comment below-I'm here to help!

    Great equipment list. Probably right for most hikers most of the time. For my own idiosyncratic preference I love a Sony a7c with a 40mm f2.5G lens. I use a Peak Design capture clip on the strap of my Zpacks backpack. I use the same microphone you do. I use the same tripod you do at home. On a multi-day trip I substitute a tiny Leofoto tripod. The Leofoto is only a few inches tall. It might be too short for video work, but it suits me for selfie photos and astrophotography. I just heard about a shop in Utah that does astrophoto modifications making your camera much more sensitive to IR light. I'm planning to give that a try when the next paycheck rolls along. As always, thank you for all the useful info. Your channel rocks!!! Your guides are pretty useful. I don't have any particular improvements. The problem with all gear channels, and yours is much more than a gear channel, and also miles away from the worst on gear, is that even honest, unbiased reviews still create a climate of "buy more stuff, buy more stuff!" I have bought plenty of things that were well worthwhile and make my backpacking safer, easier, or more fun. Still, any gear review has the tendency to plant the seed that we need a $1,000+ phone, or watch, or camera, to go hiking. You're definitely not saying that. But gear reviews, "new thing, new thing, new thing!!!" just sort of do that. Again, love the channel and value your content. Thank you!!

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 месяца назад +2

      Thank you! And yea, hear you on the gear reviews. It's interesting because I get solicited by all the same gear companies that other folks do, and I can see when everyone posts about something and know they've been paid. It's a tough nut to crack because RUclips pays you very little to do videos, and if you want to do this full time and not live like a monk, you have to figure out another way to make money. For me, it's another "job job." I'd rather just recommend things that I actually think are useful.
      Will check out the Leofoto - and the A7C is a great camera. I considered the A7Cii when it came out (after the ZV-E1) but don't have the $$ to buy all the gear, so stuck with the E1.

    • @GlennZucman
      @GlennZucman 2 месяца назад +1

      @@HikingguyThe ZV-E1 seems like a fantastic "more video than photo" camera. Since I'm "more photo than video" I love having a viewfinder, hence the a7c. I passed a hiker who had a big Canon DSLR and a big lens on the TCT a couple years ago and we joked about the size difference. The Leofoto tripod I use is the MT-03. And the tiny ball head I have on it is the MBC-18. I think Leofoto may have discontinued the MBC-18. But the MT-03 is still available even if you have to get a slightly larger head for it. It might be way too low to the ground for the video you'd want. If it does work, it's fantastic in size and weight. FYI, I heard about it from Mark Galer's YT channel. (haha, now I'm pimping gear!) Galer talks a lot about compact, lightweight gear, which I love. I already knew about the Sony compact primes. He added some great Sigma i-series compact primes like their 17mm f4 and 90mm f2.8. I only take one lens per trip, but it's nice to mix it up at times. The 40mm will probably always be my favorite.

    So glad you bought a DJI Pocket 3 and you've used it enough to do a review. About a month ago I started researching this camera and made a decision to purchase one, which I plan to do this coming week. I have even more confidence now, after watching your positive review, to take the plunge and make the investment. I'm going to get the combo with the accessories, so it's a little pricey, but I think I'm going to enjoy it.

    A good video-centric presentation. His videos are always very helpful. For my hikes, I have photo (stills) centric gear. For sort hikes I might just take my iPhone 15 pro. For longer hikes, and for “once in a lifetime” hiking trips, I will take (have taken) either a Sony A1 or an a7iv. Writing to two SD cards simultaneously is important to me. This might not be important to others.

    I appreciate your upgrades and definitely noticeable for your recent higher quality videos! I've recently moved from using my iPhone 15 Pro Max to using a Sony Alpha 7 IV camera with the Hyperlite Camera Pod & K&F Concept 60 inch Carbon Fiber Camera Tripod. I'm thinking about getting a gimble for extra stabilization and maybe using it instead of the tripod to balance the weight for hiking and backpacking trips. Waiting for them to come out with the new DJI RS 4 or DJI RS 4 Mini expected this year. Oh...and loving the ease of use of the HOVERAir X1 Pocket-Sized Self-Flying Camera. Thanks again!

      A7iv is a great camera, and was considering it. For a gimbal, I have the RS4 mini but don't use it much. It's not practical to hike with. Just keeping the Pocket 3 in my pocket does the job well and mixes in okay.

      I do use with a tripod. I have an F38 base on the battery extender, and then snap that onto my Ulanzi tripod. You can use the tracking feature that way and the Pocket 3 will follow you. Sometimes it looks a bit clunky but cool nonetheless.

    Hey I'm just curious. I've got the OM 6 gimbal and noticed you had it set up to shoot 24fps in 4k with that set up. How do you manage to shoot at that framrate even with the gimbal and avoid that minor choppiness or strobe like choppiness while hiking at that frame rate? I want to take it backpacking and get some more cinematic shots but am wondering for those exact purposes what specifically you do to mitigate that if you don't mind sharing?

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  24 дня назад

      Yea of course, I just walk carefully (ninja walk) with the gimbal. Sometimes I'll shoot in 30 fps and slow it to 24fps in my timeline to smooth it.

    As I mentioned in a separate comment, I plan to purchase a DJI combo kit this coming week. I have questions about a couple of things. You mentioned that the DJI only has one focal length, so if you want a close up picture, you switch to your iPhone. You also said that for editing you use M3 MacBook Pro - Focal Cut Pro. Two things, I have no knowledge or skill with editing, including how to splice a DJI video together with an iPhone video, and I use Android and a PC with Chrome, so can you recommend an editing program for pictures and video?

      I've had the ZV-E1 shut down once or twice, but generally it's when I'm shooting for a while. To shoot a trail guide the clips are usually 1-2 mins top each, so overheating hasn't been a problem.

    Will you need a commercial permit with high end camera in parks?

    • @christopherhaak9824
      @christopherhaak9824 2 месяца назад +2

      According to the rules, if you're filming for commercial purposes, and potentially that could include a monetized YT channel, then you should have a permit. I think there is gray areas here, but I also don't think you would want to be made an example by the feds. If for memories and just posting, strong argument that you are Ok.

    • @Hikingguy
      @Hikingguy  2 месяца назад

      I've tried to cover my bases lately. For example, I got a shooting permit for the Grand Canyon. It's the same process for me as it is for a big movie production company shooting a Transformers movie or similar. But for me to shoot with one camera and put it on RUclips, because RUclips will pay me prob $50 in ad revenue for a video over the year, I am considered "commercial." Although if you saw me you'd think I was a tourist with a camera. The Park Service says that for one person, there is no cost for a permit, but I had to pay a $100 fee to apply for the permit. I wanted to shoot for the same video on 2 non-consecutive days, so I had to pay the $100 twice. Bottom line for me is that if I shoot a trail guide in the Grand Canyon, between these fees and travel, I'll loose some money.
      However I've heard of some folks invoking their First Amendment right and getting a response that no permit is needed.
