Such lovely memories. Years ago we sang evensong at Romsey Abbey as a visiting choir and my dad played the organ. Three manuals, one more than he was used to. It terrified him but no one would ever have known given his performance even though I had to mop his brow at the end. He is one of that breed of self-taught parish church organists who just do the stuff Sunday after Sunday. He and his type won't be around for long but I think people will miss them when they're gone perhaps without realising that they were ever there.

It's really a real blessing to have a church organist in the family. My grand father who is now gone was a devoted church organist and at my old age of 53 I still remember some of those wonderful hymns we used to sing together as a family choir when I was only 7.

Thank you for bringing me to Romsey Abbey, what a wonderful Norman place. The oh-so-English organ and your playing remind me of my teenage and later years as a bass in our Methodist church choir. Hymns were important to us young people, and we regularly had hymn-singing sessions in someone's home after evening service.
Now unable to attend church, I reckon it's the hymns I miss most.
As the opening sentence of the preface to the 1933 Australian Methodist Hymnbook proudly asserted: Methodism was born in song.
Thank you again Richard and Caroline, and C S Lang! And the Tuba.

@@janemazzola4454 Good morning, Jane. I lived my first 57 years in Northern Virginia so I know exactly where you are. Not that I'm going to stalk or anything. Wondering if you know the organ at Washington Cathedral. It's been in my life more than 50 years, almost half the life of the cathedral. Whether you do, or not, I commend to you the cathedral's Annual Independence Day Organ Recital. Always wonderful, always standing room only. It's available in person (restrictions?) and on the Washington Cathedral RUclips channel.

@@lawrenceelliott350 Dear Mr. Elliott, How thoughtful of you to respond. No, I am sure you're not a stalker, nor am I!
Yes, I am familiar w/the organ & the Washington Cathedral. I have spent some wonderful moments there, of spirtual & musical refreshment, especially Evensong programs, tours w/family/friends, & several times, a guest at the charming teas held up in the bell tower. All this was before covid 19. Since then, I have frequented virtual programs + a little shopping at the gift shop (another fave stop!) I, however, am not a student of the organ, sadly so, but it has such wonderful memories from youth, choir, & church; & brings such joy to attend concerts in real time or virtual, as the wonderful programs here by Richard & Caroline & baby Hugo & sometimes graced by a kitty or two.
Thank you for the info @ the Independence Day Organ Recital. I'll not attend in person, but enjoy through RUclips.
You mentioned your long association w/the Cathedral. Have you been on staff as an organist, choirister, educator, or clergy, if I may ask? Or a dedicated parisioner, who is SO important... Blessings, Jane Mazzola

@@janemazzola4454 Hi, thanks for your wonderful note. I was never on staff at the cathedral, just a frequent guest. I was never able to be a parishioner because the cathedral had no congregation then, as it does now. I suspect I've been to more than 100 organ recitals, many other musical programs (Berlioz Requiem, Duruflé Requiem, Mahler's Eighth Symphony, The Play of Daniel (Medieval)). I was at an organ program the night before and again the following morning for the consecration of the cathedral. Who ever gets to go to such things?? There was a recital one evening of the organ and a second person on an electric synthesizer. They spoke of the huge electrical storm the night before while they were rehearsing. The stopped and walked to the crossing and watched as the lightning illuminated ALL the stained glass windows. How magnificent that must have been.
My parish was St. Paul's, K Street, and very well known high Anglican church. Oh, my, what they did there. Liturgy done perfectly, to the glory of God and to take worshipers to another place. Such fond memories. I even saw a ghost there.
I was organist/choirmaster at St. James' Episcopal Church in Potomac, Maryland for some years and it was a very wonderful experience.
More recently, I was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church and I have some thought that serving at the cathedral or St. Paul's, even once, would be more than I could stand!

I can imagine the melody soloed on the choir Cremona. I also noticed that you do all of your registrations by hand, but have read that those old-fashioned looking stops are fitted to solenoids.
