10,000 years a slave... That is the saddest thing I've heard today. I guess that makes freedom all then sweeter in the end.
and once the thought sparks , the ferocity of former slaves handed weapons of their former masters burn all the brighter
I love Rick's stuff.
That said, I wish there was another sentence or two more at the end about what happens now or what else about humans shocked them and inspired them.

I like it, because you can see how the slugs were able to be the masters for so long. Too many of their enemies thought in terms of armies and numbers, which works, as quantity does have a quality all its own, but in the end, it's not the best way to win a war, as any student of history will tell you. It's a great way to RAID an enemy, but conquest requires more.
And thus, the humans fought by striking the heart. Chain of Command is important, and they would have seen how quickly the slugs react to things, namely not quickly at all, and from there, they learned the best way to end this was to end the masters, giving them a strategic target.
Better, the slugs sound like they were in DIRECT command of their forces, individually. Works to allow you to issue orders, but like the feather on an officer's helmet, it marks you as the biggest target in the group. There's a reason officers on the field don't wear things like that anymore.
And thus, did the tyrants fall, because their strength in their cruelty meant that even to themselves, they were not brothers in arms. And humanity takes the W, and starts a new era, one where, by sheer force of will, they will lead this galaxy into freedom, and they will exterminate those who threaten it.
Ends too abruptly. With that much buildup explanation, epilogue etc. would be much appreciated.

Man, when I saw this was a Rick story I hoped it was more DDH.

now this story , as a concept makes me interested because the silly nature , even if a slave empire wages war in a lees effective way ,industrial warfare is lees exposed to the flaws of none industrial slave armies after all so single system fighting many others only makes sense to a point ..buuuuuuut...
it does bring up the interesting situation where , effective use or ..convoluted.. tactics in a industrial war setting might grant the smaller side the edge it needs aka ..increased manpower base , information & fleet assets to keep it a mobile war and a war 'in depth' for example , boarding actions in industrial warfare is between opponents with the same society structures only worth it for tactical data harvest ,not otherwise...buuuut
in a scenario where one side is smaller , yet its opponents use majority forced manpower to not just man its infrastructure feeding its fleets & armies but even in said fleets & armies to now keeping the war not just mobile but expanding stealth and boarding actions to be the main focus runs a high chance to grow your forces at the expense of your foes and best of all not even needing to construct the infrastructure to feed said force growth
The story is good but the lack of emotion in the last words left the moment empty.
