N.Korea defector regains consciousness, video shows getaway under fire - Reuters
    22-Nov-2017 12:06:38
    Adds details on defector's condition
By Haejin Choi and Josh Smith
SEOUL, Nov 22 (Reuters) - North Korean border guards were only steps behind a North Korean soldier when they opened fire and one briefly crossed the border pursuing the wounded defector as he dashed to the South Korean side, a video released on Wednesday by the U.N. Command (UNC) in Seoul showed.
The defecting soldier, whose rank and identity have not been disclosed, was critically wounded, having been hit five or six times in the hail of bullets as he made his desperate escape on Nov.13. He was flown by a U.S. military helicopter to a hospital in Suwon, south of Seoul.
Doctors announced on Wednesday that he had regained consciousness, having had two operations to extract the bullets, and his breathing was stable and unassisted.
"He is fine," lead surgeon Lee Cook-Jong said at a press conference in Suwon. "He is not going to die."
An official from U.N. Command (UNC) said North Korea had been informed on Wednesday that it had violated the 1953 armistice agreement, which marked the cessation of hostilities in the Korean War.
The UNC official told a news conference that a soldier from the North Korean People's Army (KPA) had crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), the border between the two Koreas, for a few seconds as others fired shots at the defecting soldier.
“The key findings of the special investigation team are that the KPA violated the armistice agreement by one, firing weapons across the MDL, and two, by actually crossing the MDL temporarily,” Chad Carroll, Director of Public Affairs for the UNC, told reporters.
The dramatic video showed a military vehicle speeding toward the border, passing checkpoints manned by North Korean guards before appearing to get stuck in a ditch.
North Korean soldiers were only a few metres away when the defector jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot, scrambling up slightly rising ground to cross the border.
Moments after this a handful of North Korean soldiers are seen running to toward the abandoned vehicle and stopping to open fire, though one appears to briefly cross the dividing line between the two countries before turning around.
The video does not show the moment when the defector was hit, but he is seen lying motionless next to a concrete wall in one of the later edited clips in the video.
Three South Korean troops, including the deputy commander of the border security unit, are seen crawling through undergrowth to drag the wounded North Korean to safety.
Doctors conducted a series of surgeries on the critically wounded soldier, and now say they believe he will recover, despite continued risks of infection.
"Patient requires intensive care, detailed tests and observation as there is a chance his condition may worsen due to infections of his bullet wounds," the hospital said in a statement.
The soldier show signs of depression and possible trauma, in addition to a serious case of parasites that has complicated his treatment, the hospital said.

Trying to quell this understandable but massive unrest by sheer force instead of a proper investigation of the arguments brought up by the people and the investigation of the general situation itself (meaning why is there even unrest?) is quite dictorial mate
Not saying that the behavior of this big mass of demonstrating people is completely right (obviously a lot of them are quite crazy themselves) but the reason for all of this is quite obvious and fixable. So why use force instead of fixing an obvious problem? Just trying to be reasonable mate 🤷‍♂️

My mom was born and raised in the German Democratic Republic (estern Germany before the end of the USSR) and it was very traumatic, "just" finding out how much they knew about her. She was one of the few who were allowed to leave Germany and go to Moscow for university so from the time she got into secondary school, all eyes were on her to be sure she was 100% on their side. And, well, she was. Even now, 30 years later, she doesn't trust government mandated stuff because she fears that it will eventually turn out to become as bad as it was back then. Communism is hell. I hope one day we find a better political system than capitalism but communism is not the way.

Yes, I believe it was set up. There are powerful interests that seem hell-bent on getting us into a major war, and there are open questions on whether Kim-Jong-Un is really the one running the show over there. Think "Wag the Dog". Americans have fallen for these kinds of plots before. The Vietnam and both Iraq wars were each stoked by false flag events or claims that were later exposed as lies . We have to always ask ourselves: "Who benefits?". Americans have given quite enough blood to the military-industrial complex. We're sick of it.

I was serving at Artillery regiment as a soldier during that day. We were on a dailly routine: cleaning barrack and checking equipments as usual. Suddenly, a Siren broke out and we could hear vague message coning out of speaker saying “all hands to battery, this is not a drill”. Me and my squad quickly ran into the barrack, dressed battle uniform and ran out for each posts. My position in the squad was loader btw. We waited in our SPH for solid 4 hours in complete silence, waiting for a display to pass us order. Eventually, situation was released as we all know and that’s about it lol. During that 6 hours of intense preparation and waiting for target designation, I thought like, “this is a war and I’m still not prepared for it”. If one shot, only ONE shot could fired, then it could’ve been an outbreak.

Top level scientists like the one who invented soft contact lenses in my city got only the same pay as floor cleaners, not the millions they deserved. "Companies" were state owned they didn't give a shit about the workers, they were hardcore exploited, no shit given about polluting nature. We had one of the best transistors - in communism the only poeple who could've greenlit that were a few idiots in charge of state - in capitalism that would be any of the hundreds of investors. It requires a forceful dumbing down of economy and human rights. Millions of ordinary people here fought hard for democracy and freedom of speech and finance. It was not unknown parasites but the surgeon said he haven't seen that many big parasites in human body which he could never seen that sort of thing in South Koreans'. He was a bit shocked that he could see that big many parasites which he could have only seen in text book. Anyway that thing is huge tragedy. Many South Koreans feel sympathy because of it and wish truely him to recover.

  • @Mattebubben
    @Mattebubben 6 лет назад +1

The fact that he survived is pretty incredible.
Since not only was he sick and weak to start with and was shot multiple times.
But if you pay attention to the Timestamps he also laid there for a long time before they were able to crawl out to him.
He crosses the line while being fired upon at 15:15 (At which time he was shot)
He lies in the ground without moving at 15:43
    and is saved at 15:55.
And that is a pretty long time to go with no treatment of anykind
(as i doubt he was able to administer first aid on himself)
he probably got aid from medics right after they dragged him to safety that tried to keep him stable until they got to a hospital.
That is ofc is the Timestamps are working correctly as they might not be
(Since the last timestamps remains at 15:55 for more then 1 and a half minutes of this video).
