  • This Meccano French knitting machine was completed in early April 2014. Its layout is horizontal, in contrast to all earlier French knitters of mine in which the knitting towers were vertical.
It uses knitting machine latch hooks, courtesy of John Stark of Nelson, NZ, and is knitting two yarns together - just to make things a little more interesting :) The yarn being used is 8-ply acrylic.
It has been documented in Constructor Quarterly 118 for December 2017.

I'm late to the party here but I had to pipe in & applaud you. I've just about finalised my second version of a simple vertical french knitter but this is far superior (& far more complex) to what i've put together. I've been pondering how to get that constant tension on the end so it's less hands on as right now I use a weight system. I love what you've done here.

Hi Mark and thankyou. This particular FKM is my final one, and my favourite! You're right to use a weight system first up. Unless gravity fails, that is 100% reliable. John Stark introduced the powered draw-off, but that requires a little fiddling to get it right: go for that when all else is under control. Please post your FKM achievements here on RUclips!

Another great model Graham. Strange how everyone seems to need to monetize everything. 😥😥

Thankyou, Bert, for your kind comment. Re commercialising my Meccano models, several have asked, but I don't think so. Imagine the angst when they misbehaved, which they invariably would!

Very nice and great result ... 👍🏻
    An interesting horizontal build !
Are the blue gears from Meccano ?
And the 2 plain gears we can see on bottom at 2:36 ?

Yes, the blue gears are Meccano gears. The others are not - they just fitted and do the job of drawing off the knitting as required.

      Hi Brittany,
No, sorry. My Meccano models, apart from very simple ones, would cause you grief in no time, and you wouldn't know where to start to fix them! A brief outline of this one was given in Constructor Quarterly 118 for December 2017, but not building instructions, as such.

Are those blue gears 3d- printed?

      Hi Jennifer, and thankyou.
No, they are standard Meccano triflats. Space was tight in this area, and pinions with bosses would have taken up too much axial space. Triflats never slip on their axles either - another bonus!
