Five-stage Meccano Ping-Pong Ball Roller - A
A recasting of an earlier video of my 5-module Meccano ping-pong ball roller, now with audio. I particularly like the Arugula Leaf Rag accompaniment which suits the busyness of this model very well. I hope you like it too!

Magnificent Graham.
I've always wondered how those worked.
Thankyou, Michael. The spool-switching is not always so straightforward, but in this case it certainly is!
Fantastic Graham! The big spirals on the left are interesting, what are they made from? Maybe it's time for another ball roller but it certainly won't be this one! ( I hope you can guess my true identity!)
Ha! Of course, Bert :) The large diameter spirals are Channel Segments joined and sprung slightly to make that spiral, about 16 of them as there seem to be two full circles of them (8 to a circle). The troublesome part was the elevator in the centre. That took some time (a year or two on and off) to sort out to make reliable in capturing the balls at the bottom, and then discharging them at the top.
I like it 👍👍
Thankyou, Georg. I should have retaken the video before dismantling. It's OK, but that;s all :(
Fascinating device!
Thankyou, Catherine. I'm pleased you like it! It had a long life and was shown at many Meccano shows.
I know this is late. My hat's off to you, sir! What a cool machine you have made! When I was a younger fellow, I worked in a textile mill and I am impressed with the effort to make this!
Thankyou Curtis. There are other later videos of this particular braider too, at least one with music that you may, or may not, appreciate! I have built at least 11 braiding machines in the past 20 years - my "magnetic braider" is my favourite.
Fabulously imaginative and unique models.
Thankyou, Richard. Mary would surely be pleased to know that you enjoyed her Meccano creations.
Is there any way you could run this with a better microphone? Does it still exist? I would like to use the sound in a project with your permission, happy to discuss.
No, sorry. Sound quality was not on my radar when I made this video: correct outcomes were! It was dismantled in 2021.
Hello. This machine interests me very much. I hope to be able to build one on the same principle with my humble means, for my granddaughters. Your video is quiet detailed yet I could not extract all the planning details. May I please ask for your clarifications? I recognize 2 X 4 positions turntables and 2 X 5 positions. I guess their diameters vary? I guess, by looking at the toothed wheels below deck, that there is a speed ratio between the 2 sorts? those of 5 positions turning faster? 5 to 4 ? I imagine to notice 2 distributors: one left-right between the 4 positions turntables? and one in the center? or is it in the center only a smooth gliding wheel? Many thanks, Emanuel
Emanuel, details for this flat-braid braiding machine have been published in the Sheffield Meccano Guild Journal No 138 for June 2020. You are on the right track though, but could I suggest one rather more straightforward, say the Compact Servetti braiding machinepublished in Constructor Quarterly No 111 for March 2016? It is also here on RUclips.
@@grahamjost Thanks a lot. I'll follow these suggestions. I really prefer a model with a possible center cord. Best regards. Emanuel
Hey Graham, this is so cool! Thanks for sharing, keep up the great work 😊
Thankyou both. It performed well at the Sydney Meccano Expo too - didn't miss the proverbial beat :)
Fantastic 🎉
Excellent Graham!
Splendid Graham. It's strange that the strobe effect always make wheels seem to be turning backwards!
Sorry Bert, I thought I had replied to this one. Yes indeed, it does seem that way. What is needed is the means of controlling the speed so that the effect does not occur, something which I do not have with this model.
Now I want to build one!
OK John, if you're a good boy, it might become avaiable after Sydney and our Melbourne show in October. ...
Very nice 👍🏻
Thankyou David. I have tried to spruce it up a little in the second video.
Well build or improved!👍. But the real one has a better Sound.😂😂😂
Thankyou, Georg. Actually I thought the chattering sound was rather good. Not necessarily realistic, but effective nonetheless!
Wow! Great build compared to some I've seen. Even though it's a small model, it must be difficult. Really impressed with that brown paper background.
Thnaks John. I tried it on your white paper and the greens were horribly dark. Neil Speirs siggested the brown paper yonks ago, and I use it pretty well all the time.
@@grahamjost stick to the brown then. I prefer it. Also less reflection and better contrast with zinc. I can make that light brown disappear with just one tap.
Hello Graham, what is the phone app called please? Thanks.
It's called Magnetic Counter on Google Play. You need to add a small magnet of course. for it to "see".
Precioso excelente idea! felicidades!
Gracias!
Love it! But, what happens at chime time?
Being crazy, it hasn't heard about chime time! But it can run backwards with ease. Maybe I should have demonstrated that?
Lot's of action going on in all directions. If that is displayed at an expo, I reckon it needs to be on a turntable so that people can see all the sides.
Thanks John. I'm going to redo the turntable bit to pause awhile at the back brfore continuing on to the front. So a new, hopefully improved, movie coming up..
Excellent Graham! A use for all those crazy coloured parts in the newer sets.
Thanks Bert. Absolutely
Me interesa una de esas 🙋🙋🙋 Cuánto $$_
Nice one Graham!
Excellent Graham, will have go at one one day!
Let me know when you're ready, Bert. I can suggest those which are easier and/or more reliable, for example.
@@grahamjost where'd you find an erector set? That's even more impressive.
Meccano is readily available from dealers in Britain and some other countries. Where are you?
@@grahamjost The US.
Try Joel Perlin for starters. Many Meccano sites have lists of dealers. Google Meccano!

Bravo........hats off.....ok u make rope............now make thread.........cheers
Nice one Graham! I hope your motor doesn't mind being slammed into reverse without a stop. I just bought a dozen of those insulated bush wheels!
I hope so too! But it's now demolished, with seemingly no harm done. A short dwell at each end would have been good though. Next time ...
Very cool design
Awesome, really neat idea.
Thanks Baldy. It's not really my scene, but I was pleased to get the reversing switch working well.
I like it. Well done
Thankyou. Much appreciated.
Very cool also, i like the way you did the gearing and the fiber wheels. Neat!
Many thanks. I've since replaced the metal Worm with a triflat plastic one on the triflat motor shaft.
I like it😊
Thankyou, Georg. I do too!
Now that's my kind of model!
Excellent Graham! A lot of strip bending, though.
It's long continupus narrow strip from our Jack Parsisson (Meerlu), Bert. It's an absolute boon when you need long lengths. See my recent loco videos where three full lengths are sandwiched between each pair of Angle Girders to form each rail for the Elektrikit Busheels to run in..
Excellent model. If the wheels are fibre, where is the pick-up (apologies for my density)?
Sorry, David, it's not all that clear. They are thin brass Elektrikit 2" Strips bent down to touch the rails - between the wheels on each side.
A nice runner like all your models.
Excellent!
Perfect!
Clever!👍
Me interesa mucho tu maquinita hermano 🙋🏻♂️ En cuanto $$$ 😁 Por fas, tu dime. 😊 👍👍👍
Brilliant
Thankyou. But I hope you realise it is not my original design. I've just doubled the ball runs and, hopefully, now got it working as it should have been all along!
Flawless!
I do believe it is and will be, John. After nearly 20 years of occasional perfection only ...
