Charleston, South Carolina Might Be The Best City In The South

- Wow this might be the prettiest city in the nation!
Charleston is a very historic city. Founded in 1670 as a port city, it’s defined by cute cobblestone streets, horse drawn carriages, antebellum houses, and upscale shopping. It’s been voted America’s #1 small city for nine years in a row. You’ll see why.
In this video, we’ll take a drive along the waterfront battery district, drive through some beautiful historic neighborhoods, and then cruise down King Street, Charleston’s world famous retail and dining destination.
The Battery District is right along Charleston’s picturesque harbor. Back in the Civil War days, where these homes now stand there was a defensive seawall, where confederate armies fought off attacks from union navy ships. This was a very strategic port after all, allowing supplies to enter the south from the Atlantic Ocean. Off in the distance is the famous Fort Sumpter, which was originally controlled by the union. The confederate army took eventually Fort Sumpter away from Union control, and controlled it for most of the Civil War.
Now, these homes that line this first row along the south end of Charleston sell for anywhere between 2 and 5 million dollars.
Charleston’s population is only 136,000 people, making it the most populated city in the state. Columbia, the state capital, has about 129,000 people. Charleston is growing just about as fast as it can - because the city is located on a narrow peninsula, there isn’t much room for growth. That’s why it’s notoriously so expensive to buy a home here.
Now we’re going to take a tour of some historic homes which line the south end of Charleston.
We’ll drive through two neighborhoods on Charleston’s south end - the French Quarter and Harleston Village. These historic districts are considered the most romantic sections of Charleston. As you can see, there’s a large French influence in these homes, which cost about two million bucks. Many were built in the late 1700s, but a lot of these homes have been rebuilt as late as the 1980s. Mixed in with historic homes are churches, art galleries, museums and restaurants.
Chalmers Street is the oldest cobblestone street in the city. Nearby is Waterfront Park on Charleston’s eastern shoreline.
As the brochures say, nothing quite defines southern charm like King Street. This avenue is more than 300 years old, and was named for King Charles II of England. In fact, the city of Charlestown was originally called Charles Town. Now back during the Civil War, this street, along with much of Charleston, was devastated. But then during the 1950s, the whole city of Charleston went through an urban revitalization. Important areas of the city like King Street were completely renovated.
King Street has some of Charleston’s trendiest restaurants and sophisticated cocktail scenes, as well as hotels, art galleries, high-end shopping and a lively nightlife. Not too long ago, King Street was given the distinction as one of the top 10 shopping streets in the United States.

Thank you Nick for featuring Charleston🙂It is a lovely place to live in & move to!
What a BEAUTIFUL city. It feels like a mix of Europe and the old South... I've got to visit this place soon!
I live in Charleston and it is absolutely beautiful.
Charleston is tiny, over crowded and boring
Melanin Kay wym there is so much things to do in Charleston...
Are you a native? I wonder if you know some guys I went to school with. I'm 38 and I'm from Cincinnati Ohio. I used to visit Charleston all the time 🌴👍🏾🍾
@@melaninkaygirlboss1798 You live in Charleston?

I remember a tour from years ago to Charleston, Jekyll Island and Savannah. The most beautiful part of the south that I have ever been.
It’s weird watching this when you walk these streets almost everyday
Dang I missed you!
Moving Here next month

@Melain probably where YOU are 🤣🤷🏾♂️

I might be going there in a few weeks to visit the Citadel. Great work once again, Nick.
ive heard great things about the citidel Lou.
My father in law is an officer there. Great school!
Nick Johnson Nick Johnson they run the triple Option and I’m very close with their coaching staff
Loved the video. I can't travel much for reasons, so this is my way of traveling. Thanks Nick.
Good! Well you're GOING to NEW YORK this Friday. Well at least the worst parts of New York.
@@NickJohnson Thanks. And you're welcome to come over and visit 😊
Isn't that the TRUTH? ;^> I watch videos like this all the time, and my brain actually starts to _absorb_ the various drives, and I recall them almost like my own memory. I experience the Google street-view shots and 3D cityscaping much the same way: even if I travel the actual paths myself, I recall the "virtual" travels with equal accuracy. SOOOO cool!!!
I realize I take for granted how beautiful it is since I see it everyday
Lucky you...
I love this area 😍. Moved here from NYC over 30 years ago and never got homesick. Nick, come to Summerville next time you visit.
Chara Baxter are the homes expensive in Summerville?? Thinking of relocating
@@tmichele8922 Depends on what you call expensive, but no less than $175,000. There is quite a long commute if you work in Charleston because the traffic is terrible.
Chara Baxter yes I’m in Ohio doing transit but if I come there it’s a $14 cut to do city transit
@@tmichele8922 Unfortunately depending on what you do, salaries aren't that great. A $14 cut is a lot to me. Do your research.
Yes summerville is so charming. On a much smaller scale than charleston but none the less "beautiful places, smiling faces" glad to have your smiling face here!
My brother left Australia after being scouted by UT for their golf program over 20 yrs ago...then he headed over to Carson-Newman ...then ended up as head coach at Charleston Southern...he met his wife and married and i have 2 beautiful southern belles as nieces..
Ive never had a chance to visit him and his heart will always belong in Perth but.what a beautiful place he now calls home 🐨🐨 great video 😊
Hopefully you learned something!
@@NickJohnson i certainly did...the history alone is fascinating 😊
I moved here a few years ago and yes there are the good and the bad parts of Charleston but overall I love it. I work downtown at Virginia’s on King and Kings Street is full of southern charm. I enjoy working there. Just visited parts of Summerville and it has built up a lot as well. Overall, it’s a beautiful place to
visit and certain to settle down into but it’s up to you. I love it here!! Lots more to do. Thank you for this video
Welcome 😉
Charleston is beautiful I’ve live in downtown Charleston until the age of 9 and move onto James Island till this present day and I am 34 now. But my heart is downtown where I was born and raised.
I spent the whole week on James island
I love my city
Very good video Nick. Thanks for sharing. And the music: WOW. I could put this video on loop and have it as background music for a while.
It's all RUclips audio library stuff
Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities I've seen. Funny that you mention James Island cause we got a speeding ticket there on our visit. The cop looked like he just walked off the set of Smokey and the Bandit. It was something like $150 for the ticket and this was over thirty years ago.
I like James Island
Gina Bayer is the neighborhood in Edward Scissorhands your idea of a nice place to live? Daniel Island is like coloring by numbers. Just keep your round peg in your round hole.
What a great video! I havent been back in Charleston for years- if anything its more beautiful than i remember. Thank you Niick- the video and the music. Mr. Johnson- you sure have talent!
It looks so nice. I used to live in Columbia back in the 70's. I would like to visit Charleston.
👍👍 thanks nick..!! I always love this kinda videos drive videos.

@@NickJohnson yep that's true.!
This is my home town born and raise, My hubby and kids still live here we luv it!
Beautiful city and beautiful music.
Nice change of pace thanks for sharing. I love the South a lot. Keep up the great work.
Hey Andre. Me too :) Charleston is cool!
This is a pretty well done short tour of my home city. Yes, parts are not so good. True, the secrets out and everyone else is moving here. 99% of all cities probably have bad areas, but there are tons of great to go with the not so greats. The people are awesome here, the food is amazing and the views of the harbor never get old. There's history in every direction and getting out into the country is only a short drive. Next time you make it here, hit me up, I'll get you out on the water for Chapter 2! Ya'll come back, now!
Like on a boat? Email me haha
@@NickJohnson No, on a blimp...YES, on a boat! ;) I have an eco tour company here in Charleston. I'll get you this same tour from the water, and the view is just as good!
This makes me want to go visit. Looks very, very nice!
It's charming!
I'm sorry I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist that last comment. I'm from Charleston and great job Nick! we love showing off our city.
Good grief, it's so beautiful, I would love to visit it sometime.
Thank you for a beautiful drive through one of my SC cities. Please visit Florence, Columbia, Aiken, Rock Hill, Spartanburg, and Greenville to name a few. South Carolina (SC) is a wonderful place to live and vacation. Thanks again.
I plan on it I've really only seen the coast so far. My favorite coast of all!
@@NickJohnson If you are a history buff, you will enhance your visit by visiting our many historic sites. The battles of the Cowpens and Kings Mountain are located in the upstate. Just 20-30 miles apart.

What a beautiful city Charleston is.
Thank's Nick! I remember shopping along the strip with so many stores & great food! I also remember (SOB) thats South of Broad :) ! Miss that place! I stoped looking in Florida, & focusing on South Carolina! Hope to be ready by 2024 if all goes well! 🙏🙏🙏
I spent most of my life in the Charleston suburbs. Summerville, and North Charleston to be exact. I was born in N. Charleston my parents are from Ohio. My dad joined the Navy, and his first assignment was here. We moved every couple of years, but always found ourselves back in Charleston. I love it here, but with decades of uncontrolled growth it is a nightmare to get anywhere around here. I wish people will stop moving here we are full, and that is no joke.
That's true David!
Yeah the traffic is so bad
Charleston is a beautiful city, and we've met so may pleasant people there over the decades.
Nice video Nick. This is probably my favorite (Drive) videos. I love history and this place definitely has it. I appreciate you narrating it a little more than others you did. Make sure you make it up to Chicago soon. Alot of history in there too with prohibition and depression era. Like the Biography Theater still stands almost perfectly persevered where one of my heros John Dillinger got gunned down by the FBI in July 22 1934.
Mike I will make it to Chicago again eventually but it's gonna be east coast hoods for a while - DC Baltimore up next
Great video Nick 👍 like always
Looks awesome, beautiful houses with character. New Hope, Pennsylvania has nice historical houses too.
Nice and relaxing video.
It's chill. Outside of downtown it's less and less charming pretty quick.
Nick Johnson jeez Nick, how do you define charming? I’m glad you are so perceptive, to see what is laid bare before you, as so many blind pointing out directions to other blind.
We love Charleston! My family would vacation there all the time. May be going this August
I lived in charleston for 21 years, and still have family there. It’s a beautiful historic place! But to be fair, IT DOES HAVE GHETTOS ALSO, JUST LIKE MANY OTHER CITIES. North Charleston, Johns island, WEST ASHLEY , WHERE I LIVED , ALL HAVE GHETTOS. Downtown Charleston has slowly been gentrified, just like many other places in this country. And just like anywhere it has good and bad. Still a beautiful city though!!! Excellent video!!!
i was being nice :)
Gina it'll be there when you return 😉
Ponderosa 2016 My family and I have lived in Charleston all our lives and still here. When you want to mention ghetto areas, Johns Island is not one of them, it’s a country area but not ghetto. There’s a difference
Wait, what about the peninsula itself? Ghettos? If you think that what is in Charleston, even the roughest parts of the tri county area aren’t THAT bad. Ghetto? Where are you from when you say something like that? Arizona? West Ashley? Ghetto? Good god man. The very worst parts of West Ashley are not like instant danger, as the real ghettos are in major cities. Get a grip. Your comment reeks of superficial observation. Sorry. Seriously. I apologize for the abrasive nature of my comment, but that pales in how offensive yours was. Bubble much?
@@samanthalinen4058 @Ponderosa2016 Samantha, I totally agree. I live on Johns (near Angel Oak) and it's a less commercialized James Island, and an upgrade from West Trashly- I saw that jokingly because Ashley is not as bad as it used to be. That Poderosa2016 person sounds like some Mt. Pleasant / Isle of Palms elitist.
Charleston is amazing can't wait to go back this summer
This is a trip....... I'm a dump truck driver in charleston and surrounding areas so it is fun to look on the internet and see and recognize areas I drive through all the time.
I know!
Charleston is absolutely breathtaking.
You should do a walk through of James island, Folly beach & Magnolia plantation.. beautiful places right outside our city!
You're right!
Dont forget Daniel Island
Thanks for the excellent video! Heading here in 3 weeks.
I moved to Cane Bay recently and Summerville from Massachusetts. I have to say I am in love with this place. Perfect school system And great neighborhoods. So much more affordable than Massachusetts
I grew up in the West Ashley section of Charleston down near Middleton Plantation.
It's been quite some years but I still miss it powerfully.
My father was in the Navy and I was born in Charleston we moved around the world and I finished my last year of high school in Summerville South Carolina approximately 20 miles west of Charleston. I went to college for two years and then I joined the Navy myself. South Carolina is a nice place to visit between say mid September and mid April other than that it’s scorching hot with the highest humidity you’ve ever experienced.
I've felt it
Stay away we are full
Cool! I'll be moving there tomorrow! Lol
Lol😂
We have to do folks like they did Mary and Joseph no more room at the inn.
You know, people have a right to live where they want. I live in Charleston half the year for work, and I believe I add to the community rather than take from it. I volunteer, I take an interest in local issues, I don't hurt anyone and I spend my money locally.
Being from Seattle, I totally understand why you don't want Charleston to grow too big too fast, but not every outsider is a bad person, and not every native Charlestonian is virtuous.
I'm saying this with love, but get over yourselves.
Jonathan Weir Do you own Charleston?
Charleston is awesome. I live here and uber downtown. Nightlife is crazy. We also got carnival cruises that leave from here
I saw one parked there when I was there
Hey Nick, that video was superb, thanks for posting it.
Hey Rob!
I have family in Charleston so it's nice to see this side even if my family and I never get to live here. I know my ancestors roamed these streets and played a huge part of its existence today. As in most nicer areas my family do not take time to frequent these area as they feel unwelcome but each time I visit, I make sure to roam the area where my ancestors were brought, sold and worked. Thank you for a closer glimpse.
I liked it a lot,you do a very great job 👍🏻🙋🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🕊️😁

Well it would have been awkward with you staring at my hot driver all day though 😉
Nick Johnson that depends...who was your driver??
Great video Nick. Charleston looks amazing😁
It's pretty cool Jill, although this was the first time I saw the BAD sides so it felt less charming than the last time I was here :)
Ohhh that's not good🤔

Sorry I missed you! Excellent video♥️
I saw you Diane - you acted like you didn't know me I was 😥😥😥😥
That area has had alot of history between the american revolutionary war time when the British occupied Charleston to the civil war. Seems like a great city to tour.
Charleston is beautiful. Also nick how are you
it IS and I am fine how are you Stun?
Thanks for the ride along. Beautiful area.
Beautiful-looking city, you picked a wonderful day for the drive too. It'd be great to see you do a Seattle driving tour (on a similarly nice day of course) if ever you go up there
Alan if I ever do go to Seattle you'll be the first to know!
A second into the video and my heart go so full. I miss my hometown. #843forever
❤️
Hot as Hades in the summer months with all the 90 degree water around it. Prefer the cooler temps way up north in Wilmington and Raleigh :). I visit Chucktown 1-2 times a year when I need some Lowcountry food and to trip over cobblestones.
Haha they are very trippy
Hey, .. that's my hometown! 👍👍👍 Now living in the SF Bay Area.
I live in Myrtle Beach South Carolina
And love going to Charleston
Charleston is great!
Charleston, finally a good one
I think the complaints are he really didn't show Charleston. He showed the white picturesque part. I can trace my slave descendants back to johns island. I was born and raised in Charleston. This is not a true reflection of the city at all. He only showed what tourist want to see. I'd change the title to a tourist view or Charleston.
Yeah cause this particular video is aimed more towards tourism. He's got other videos that mention more of the desparities of the city.
Born n raise in Charleston!!
I was planning to take a trip to Charleston, South Carolina, the Palmetto state is truly gorgeous in its own way, full of history and charm, the winters are comfortable a bit more then where I currently live which is Yorktown,Virginia, also I love all the Sabal palmettos, and your videos are amazing 😁🙏🏾
Hey! It is a really pretty state for the most part - maybe my fave coast of all outside of Oregon
Been in Charleston a number of times....trucker......once right after hurricane Hugo...snapped off those tall trees about half way up.....lost a lot of them then.....can sense the history of the place...
Thank U Sooo Much For Sharing This🌹This Is Right On Time For Us😍💖
If you like old buildings with "southern charm", there's always market street, and just outside the city there's plenty of plantations. How's that for charming?
Welcome to my hometown!!!!!!!!!
Hi Samantha. Sorry we missed one another 😘
Nick Johnson maybe we can meet the next time you are in Charleston.
Thanks for stopping by! 🤗
Absolutly charming this video , like it 👍
Charleston is more than just the downtown district with the expensive homes. It is the people and the food and the arts and Crafts and the history. It is the trees and rivers and marshes and islands.Charleston is Mount Pleasant and West Ashley and North Charleston and even Summerville. Charleston is an amazing place, but we are full!! Come visit anytime, y’all!
I love Chucktown. I have family there and visit often. Gets really hot in summer and downtown has a constant smell of urine. I highly recommend a visit to one of the local plantations and also make sure you go see Angel Oak. A tree that will blow your mind.
Your going to make me go home next weekend ..this is my hometown where I was born raised until 19,
my parents and most of family still live there
My family goes to Charleston every 2 years. The horse drawn tours are kinda expensive but worth it in my opinion if you ever visit. You can learn alot about the history.
So pretty. Reminds me of the French Quarter of New Orleans, only probably a lot safer. BTW, take Mappy and Mrs. Mappy to do a tour of Lambertville, NJ and New Hope, PA. Just as lovely and historic
Huh I had no idea. Okay maybe I will!
@@NickJohnson You'd be surprised at how pretty NJ can be!
lived here all my life on james island and too many folks are moving here.

Coco Taveras Yes
@@CocoTaveras8975
Cheaper than California but thats not saying much. Area floods from time to time. Has alot of snakes, cockroaches, etc. Parking costs and enforcement are ridiculous. But it sure has its beauty. Just make sure you get the best flood/hurricane insurance and you will be good. It does have some ghetto areas to the nw. Its a place to visit but not to live for most.
Pauly P are there places that are nice to live in without snakes or cockroaches? Alaska?
Andrew Higdon Usually the suburbs of big cities are nice and don’t have snakes or roaches. I grew up in the suburbs in the Northeast and never saw a snake and only saw roaches when I went into the actual city.
Can you do a video where you drive through Columbia, South Carolina?! Because that's my home city!
I lived in Charleston for 7 years...just moved. It's an amazing little city, with so much to offer for everyone. Thanks for sharing!
I agree! Glad you liked it!
Everything about Charleston has gone down hill in the last 7-8 years . Quality of life, traffic, housing cost, cost of food, flooding, losing its charm due to the amount of people moving here combined the rate they’re showing up. Drinking water quality is very very poor. Harbor water quality is getting worse due to Constant sewage spill from an overwhelmed system. Enormous loss of trees and green space just to make room for over priced apartments and hotels. The list goes on and on.
I went to Charleston once on Christmas and couldn’t believe it got so cold there, ditto Savannah the next day. Stayed at the John Rutledge House Inn which I highly recommend. The Downtown area is a nice place to walk with drop dead gorgeous architecture and we actually found a great Thai restaurant that was open Christmas night. The National Park Service does its usual bang-up job at the visitor center connected to Fort Sumter. Even JFK would rendezvous with a pre-Jackie girlfriend (who was suspected of being a spy) at the Fort Sumter Hotel on King Street. Speaking of which, great name for a street. Right up there with King William, Virginia (where I stopped on the way back from Charleston/Savannah). Whew! A lot of driving in my (then) brand new BMW.
Sounds fun!
Wow I could only imagine how even more charming this place would be during Christmas
Side-note: I think you exposed the secret to all the Californians
haha i think this is too far away for them to wander.
Nick Johnson I moved from California to north Carolina for work it’s not too far to move it was nice if you ignore all the bigots with confederate flag junk
andydguitar what the hell does any political leaning have to do with this horrifically uninformed video? For your information, and in spite of its history, Charleston is the most liberal city in South Carolina, and while that’s not saying much, it’s better than nothing. I mean, I guess I could live where you do now. Oh, the horror.
Andrew Higdon dude calm down most black people don’t like seeing that crap is all I’m saying and sadly I saw it a lot some people are just stuck in their own ignorance
Our daughter is studying there for a year, so we were lucky to have been able to spend both Thanksgiving and Christmas there. While it was very lovely being there at that time of year, It felt a little strange sitting outside having croissants and coffee at the end of December!
